Abstract:
This paper builds on an earlier paper that presented an unstructured, semester-long team-based capital budgeting project for senior level undergraduate accounting students. Successfully completing this project required accounting students to step outside of their narrow accounting transactions framework and to apply extensive organizational, analytical, information gathering, and critical thinking skills. This extension paper provides two additional Business Opportunity Statements that can be assigned to student groups for semester projects. Utilizing these additional Statements will allow faculty to challenge consecutive semesters of students.

Abstract:
A cluster analysis data classification technique was used on assessment scores from 157 undergraduate nursing students who passed 2 successive compulsory courses in human anatomy and physiology. Student scores in five summative assessment tasks, taken in each of the courses, were used as inputs for a cluster analysis procedure. We aimed to group students into high-achieving (HA) and low-achieving (LA) clusters and to determine the ability of each summative assessment task to discriminate between HA and LA students. The two clusters identified in each semester were described as HA ( n = 42) and LA ( n = 115) in semester 1 (HA1and LA1, respectively) and HA ( n = 91) and LA ( n = 42) in semester 2 (HA2and LA2, respectively). In both semesters, HA and LA means for all inputs were different (all P < 0.001). Nineteen students moved from the HA1group into the LA2group, whereas 68 students moved from the LA1group into the HA2group. The overall order of importance of inputs that determined group membership was different in semester 1 compared with semester 2; in addition, the within-cluster order of importance in LA groups was different compared with HA groups. This method of analysis may 1) identify students who need extra instruction, 2) identify which assessment is more effective in discriminating between HA and LA students, and 3) provide quantitative evidence to track student achievement.

Abstract:
Abstract Many young adults in the United States (U.S.) moved from college accommodations to live with their parents/family during the Spring 2020 semester due to the COVID-19 pandemic. While alcohol consumption fluctuates during a typical semester among students, the impact of the sudden changes stemming from the pandemic on students’ alcohol consumption patterns is unclear. To examine the impact of the COVID-19 pandemic on college student alcohol consumption while accounting for legal drinking age and living situation. Data were collected from students (n = 302) at a large, northeastern U.S. university at the beginning and end of the of the 2019 and 2020 Spring semesters via an online survey that assessed socio-demographic characteristics (age, gender, race/ethnicity, living situation) and alcohol consumption using the daily drinking questionnaire. Data were analyzed using a 2 (cohort group: COVID-19 vs. normal) × 2 (age group: above 21 vs. under 21) × 2 (time: beginning vs. end of the semester) mixed model ANOVA. There was a significant three-way interaction. Students over the legal drinking age impacted by the pandemic demonstrated a drastic decrease in alcohol consumption by the end of the semester compared to those under normal circumstances. Change in living situation as a result of the pandemic drastically impacted the alcohol consumption patterns of students over the legal drinking age. Suggestions for future research on the continuing effects of the pandemic on students are discussed.

Abstract:
This article presents the results of a pilot project that tested the application of algorithmic topic modeling to chat reference conversations. The outcomes for this project included determining if this method could be used to identify the most common chat topics in a semester and whether these topics could inform library services beyond chat reference training. After reviewing the literature, four topic modeling algorithms were successfully implemented using Python code: (1) LDA, (2) phrase-LDA, (3) DMM, and (4) NMF. Analysis of the top ten topics from each algorithm indicated that LDA, phrase-LDA, and NMF show the most promise for future analysis on larger sets of data (from three or more semesters) and for examining different facets of the data (fall versus spring semester, different time of day, just the patron side of the conversation).

Abstract:
The final semester examination is a routine agenda for each semester for the Program Studi Sistem Informasi Universitas Nusantara PGRI Kediri. In the implementation of the final semester exams, some of the supporting documents are the exam schedule, minutes of the exam and the list of attendees of the exam. In the minutes of the exam and the attendance list, some entries must be written by the supervisor. Some of the fields include data on day, date, exam time, exam room, course name, lecturer, class and supervisor's name. Each of these documents is made in 2 copies, so that the filling process can take up the time of the supervisor when carrying out supervisory duties. When examined, some of the entries are actually already in the exam schedule, just how to make the data contained in the schedule can be integrated to complete the fields. This problem exists because there is no system or database that is the basis for making these documents. This study aims to provide a solution by building an information system that helps produce final semester exam support documents, such as exam schedules, minutes of the exam and attendance list of participants, using the PHP programming language and MySQL database support so that the process of making these documents is done systematic and automatic system. The results of the study indicate that with the Information System Supporting the Semeste Final Examination Document, the making of documents can be done in an integrated manner, so that some of the entries no longer need to be handwritten anymore. In the end, the documents produced by the system can save writing time faster.

Abstract:
This section discusses how the changing students’ experiences necessitated a rethinking of the educational programme and the development of an active pedagogy. The reform used two powerful instruments: an adaptation of the Common European Framework of Reference for Languages, which allows the language coordinator to evaluate the linguistic needs of students upon arrival (and the students to recognise their own strengths and weaknesses) and to design strategies that help them improve during the semester; and the new Common Framework for Intercultural Learning, inspired by the former, which allows students to acquire and improve behavioural intercultural skills through self-managed research practices. This section describes how the language teaching reform was carried out in the programme, the role of the Common Framework for Intercultural Learning, the role of the mentors who accompany students in their learning paths throughout the semester and describes the combined use of these tools.

Abstract:
Process-oriented guided-inquiry learning (POGIL), a pedagogical technique initially developed for college chemistry courses, has been implemented for 2 yr in a freshman-level anatomy and physiology course at a small private college. The course is populated with students with backgrounds ranging from no previous college-level science to junior and senior biology, biochemistry, and forensic science majors. Fifty percent of the lectures in the course were replaced with POGIL activities, performed in class by students working collaboratively in small groups. The introduction of POGIL pedagogy into the second half of a two-semester anatomy and physiology course significantly improved student performance on summative evaluations. Overall course scores increased from a mean score of 76% to 89% in the three semesters after POGIL was introduced. Performance on the same multiple-choice final exam rose from a mean of 68% to 88% over the same time period. Most significantly, the rate of students earning a D or F in the course was halved in the first two semesters after POGIL was introduced and was 0% in the third semester. Student satisfaction with the method was high, and most students perceived the value of this form of instruction.

Abstract:
The current study is an attempt to discover the vocabulary size of students majoring in International Natural Science Education and the developmental pattern of their vocabulary size. The proposed research questions are: (1) What are the vocabulary sizes of students of international natural science education? and (2) Is their vocabulary size different across levels (freshmen, sophomore and junior)? To achieve the research aim, a cross-sectional research design was used. The total number of 79 students from three semesters studying in International Natural Science Education participated in the study. The instrument used was a Vocabulary Size Test developed by Nation and Beglar (2007). A descriptive statistic and an inferential statistics One-Way ANOVA continued by a pos-hoc test (Scheffe) were run in order to answer the proposed research questions. The results of computation revealed that the vocabulary size was 5,271-word families for the freshmen level, 6,142-word families for the sophomore level and 6,524-word families for the junior level. Based on the result of inferential statistics One-Way ANOVA, the student’s vocabulary size across levels are different. The F-ratio indicates that the difference between these groups was 7,369 in the level of significance 0,001. Furthermore, based on the Scheffe test, the significant difference lies between semester 2 and semester 4. Meanwhile, the difference of the vocabulary size between semester 4 and semester 6 was found to be less significant. In general, it can be concluded that there is a difference on the development of student’s vocabulary size reflected by the result of statistical analysis. The developmental pattern of students’ vocabulary size seems to be positive since the higher the level, the larger the students’ vocabulary size.

Abstract:
Aim: In this study, we aimed to evaluate the composition of grapes and wines of the Alicante Bouschet variety from a tropical semi-arid area in Brazil, by studying two rootstocks and harvests in different semesters (climates) of the same year. Methods, Results: Vines of Vitis vinifera L., Alicante Bouschet, a teinturier variety, were grown in a tropical semi-arid climate in Brazil. The phenolic composition of the grapes and wines was measured to assess how they had been affected by two rootstocks (IAC 572 and 1103P) and two harvest seasons, Semester 1 and Semester 2 (in this region, a grapevine produces two harvests per year, with an intra-annual climate variability). The grapes and wines were subjected to the usual physicochemical analyses, as well as to spectrophotometric and chromatographic analyses. Sensory analysis was carried out by professional tasters. The results show that there is a rootstock effect and a harvest season effect for several parameters on grape composition, as well as on the resulting wines. The grapes from vines grafted onto IAC 572 rootstock contained higher titratable acidity, tartaric acid, malic acid, total anthocyanins, total proanthocyanidins in skins and seeds and polymeric tannins in skins. The grapes from vines grafted onto 1103P rootstock contained higher concentrations of total phenols and non-flavonoids, total monomeric anthocyanins, monomeric and polymeric tannins in the seeds. The second semester wines were higher in total anthocyanins, total phenols, flavonoids and non-flavonoids, condensed tannins and low molecular weight flavanols, astringency potential, colour intensity, titratable acidity, total dry extract and alcohol content. Conclusions: The results demonstrate an influence of rootstock and harvest season (semester/climate) on grape and wine composition. Some of the grape and wine phenolic compounds analysed individually (some monomeric anthocyanins and low molecular weight flavanols) were higher in the first semester than in the second. The overall phenolic parameters determined in grapes and wines from the second semester were higher than those from the first. According to the sensory analyses, the semester (climate) effect was stronger than the rootstock effect, and the wines from the second semester received the highest scoring than those from the first semester, mainly for olfactory and gustatory attributes.Significance and impact of the study: This study uses a holistic methodology, mainly with respect to the phenolic compounds, to examine the combined effects of rootstocks and intra-annual climate variability on grape and wine composition. The results of this study may contribute to future research, as well as help the producers and wine companies of tropical regions to tailor viticultural and oenological parameters, in order to improve the quality and typicality of the products.

Abstract:
The important but difficult choice of vocational trajectory often takes place in college, beginning with majoring in a subject and taking relevant coursework. Of all possible disciplines, pre-medical studies are often not a formally defined major but pursued by a substantial proportion of the college population. Understanding students’ experiences with pre-med coursework is valuable and understudied, as most research on medical education focuses on the later medical school and residency. We examined the pattern and predictors of attrition at various milestones along the pre-med coursework track during college. Using a College Board dataset, we analyzed a sample of 15,442 students spanning 102 institutions who began their post-secondary education in years between 2006 and 2009. We examined whether students fulfilled the required coursework to remain eligible for medical schools at several milestones: 1) one semester of general chemistry, biology, physics, 2) two semesters of general chemistry, biology, physics, 3) one semester of organic chemistry, and 4) either the second semester of organic chemistry or one semester of biochemistry, and predictors of persistence at each milestone. Only 16.5% of students who intended to major in pre-med graduate college with the required coursework for medical schools. Attrition rates are highest initially but drop as students take more advanced courses. Predictors of persistence include academic preparedness before college (e.g., SAT scores, high school GPA) and college performance (e.g., grades in pre-med courses). Students who perform better academically both in high school and in college courses are more likely to remain eligible for medical school.

Abstract:
China implemented an aggressive nationwide lockdown procedure immediately after the COVID-19 outbreak in January 2020. As China emerges from the impact of COVID-19 on national economic and industrial activities, it has become the site of a large-scale natural experiment to evaluate the impact of COVID-19 on regional air quality. However, ground measurements of fine particulate matters (PM2.5) concentrations do not offer comprehensive spatial coverage, especially in suburban and rural regions. In this study, we developed a machine learning method with satellite aerosol remote sensing data, meteorological fields and land use parameters as major predictor variables to estimate spatiotemporally resolved daily PM2.5 concentrations in China. Our study period consists of a reference semester (1 November 2018–30 April 2019) and a pandemic semester (1 November 2019–30 April 2020), with six modeling months in each semester. Each period was then divided into subperiod 1 (November and December), subperiod 2 (January and February) and subperiod 3 (March and April). The reference semester model obtained a 10-fold cross-validated R2 (RMSE) of 0.79 (17.55 μg/m3) and the pandemic semester model obtained a 10-fold cross-validated R2 (RMSE) of 0.83 (13.48 μg/m3) for daily PM2.5 predictions. Our prediction results showed high PM2.5 concentrations in the North China Plain, Yangtze River Delta, Sichuan Basin and Xinjiang Autonomous Region during the reference semester. PM2.5 levels were lowered by 4.8 μg/m3 during the pandemic semester compared to the reference semester and PM2.5 levels during subperiod 2 decreased most, by 18%. The southeast region was affected most by the COVID-19 outbreak with PM2.5 levels during subperiod 2 decreasing by 31%, followed by the Northern Yangtze River Delta (29%) and Pearl River Delta (24%).

Abstract:
Flipped teaching (FT) has caught educators’ attention due to its success in engaging students through pre- and in-class activities. To learn if FT improved student performance, scores from the quizzes and exams of a fully flipped classroom with retrieval exercises were compared with those of five semesters of traditional lecture-based [unflipped (UF)] teaching in an undergraduate sophomore-level physiology course. Student attitude surveys were also evaluated. Student performance on both the quizzes and exams was significantly higher in the FT class in general compared with that of the UF teaching. Interestingly, however, when the individual exam scores were compared between the two styles, the scores for students in the FT were significantly higher for exams 2 and 3, yet lower for exam 1. The shift in performance from exam 1 to exams 2 and 3 is likely explained by the need for time to adjust to the new teaching style. Students reported an overall positive perception of FT in their course evaluations at the end of the semester. In conclusion, FT improved student performance compared with that of lecture-based traditional teaching practice, but required some time to adjust in the beginning of the semester.

Abstract:
Abstract: This paper presents a study of correlation between subjects of Diploma in Electrical Engineering (Electronics/Power) at Universiti Teknologi MARA(UiTM) Cawangan Terengganu using Artificial Neural Network (ANN). The analysis was done to see the effect of mathematical subjects (Pre-calculus and Calculus 1) and core subject (Electric Circuit 1) on Electronics 1. Electronics 1 is found to be a core subject with the history of high failure rate percentage (more than 25%) in previous semesters. This research has been conducted on current final semester students (Semester 5). Seven (7) models of ANN are developed to observe the correlation between the subjects. In order to develop an ANN model, ANN design and parameters need to be chosen to find the best model. In this study, historical data from students’ database were used for training and testing purpose. Total number of datasets used are 58 sets. 70% of the datasets are used for training process and 30% of the datasets are used for testing process. The Regression Coefficient, (R) values from the developed models was observed and analyzed to see the effect of the subject on the performance of students. It can be proven that Electric Circuit 1 has significant correlation with the Electronics 1 subject respected to the highest R value obtained (0.8100). The result obtained proves that student’s understanding on Electric Circuit 1 subject (taken during semester 2) has direct impact on the performance of students on Electronics 1 subject (taken during semester 3). Hence, early preventive measures could be taken by the respective parties.
