ABSTRACT ∙ To investigate the value of water reservoirs for waterbirds in semi‐arid lands, we studied the waterbird community in semi‐arid of Paraíba, Brazil, and compared the results with other assemblages both in semi‐arid and humid regions of Neotropics. Birds were counted during 15 months in 12 reservoirs belonging to the Piranhas‐Açu River basin. We counted 4111 waterbirds and recorded 36 species. The most abundant species, such as Wattled Jacana (Jacana jacana) and Common Gallinule (Gallinula galeata), were strongly tied to aquatic vegetation. All species have wide distribution, far beyo

A new species of terrestrial isopod, Gabunillo aridicola sp. nov., is described from Ceará and Rio Grande do Norte States, in Karstic formations in the Brazilian semi-arid (caatinga). This genus, hitherto monotypic, was known only from Gabon. This occurrence is remarkable because very few genera of Armadillidae are known from both Afrotropics and Neotropics, and because it offers evidence of a tropical Gondwana biogeographical component.

Abstract The lizard Salvator merianae is a widely distributed species in South America, occurring from southern Amazonia to the eastern Andes and northern Patagonia. Studies on the parasitic fauna of this lizard have revealed that it is a host for helminths in various Brazilian biomes. The present work provides new parasitological data on the gastrointestinal nematodes associated with the lizard S. merianae. Sixteen specimens were analyzed from nine different locations in a semi-arid region in northeastern Brazil. Five species of nematodes were identified. Oswaldofilaria petersi was first reco

The genus Galapa Huber, 2000 includes tiny spiders (body length <1.5 mm) restricted to semi-arid habitats. It has long been thought to be endemic to the Galapagos Islands until G. spiniphila Huber, 2020 was described from the Venezuelan Paraguaná Peninsula. Here, we support this generic assignment with molecular (CO1) data and describe two new species from Colombia (G. gabito Huber sp. n.) and Costa Rica (G. murphyi Huber sp. n.), showing that the genus is actually widely distributed. Distribution modelling identifies several high suitability areas for Galapa, all of which are poorly sample

Understanding the impacts caused by invasive plant species, especially in regions where studies are scarce, is of great importance to the development of management and conservation strategies. Amongst the biomes present in Brazil, the Caatinga (Dry Tropical Forest) stands out for having had few studies dealing with biological invasions by plants and animals. An evaluation of scientific production can provide a means by which the progress of invasion-related studies can be assessed, as well as identify research gaps and provide a broad overview of the importance of invasions in this biome.
