Abstract:
Based on features of language in note-taking for C-E consecutive interpreting, this research studies and analyzes possible reasons behind the language choice of trainee interpreters in consecutive interpreting. The research combines quantitative and qualitative methods, and conducts a questionnaire survey, consecutive interpreting experiments and semi-structured interviews with 12 trainee interpreters in China’s Mainland and Taiwan. The research shows that notes in language forms account for the largest percentage of notes taken in consecutive interpreting, and that language choice in note-taking cannot be totally explained using the “source language vs. target language” or “A language vs. B language” dichotomy, but is also influenced by efficiency of handwriting and interpreters’ training profile.

Abstract:
Industrial semi-solid casting trials of aluminum A356 brake calipers were performed over five days with the CSIR-RCS and high-pressure die casting process cell. Consecutive visual passed castings were used as the measure of process stability, and common defects between trials were categorized. Short fill results are erratic and caused by unintended underdosing by the furnace or incomplete billet discharge at the delivery point in the shot sleeve. Cold shuts can be significantly reduced by adjusting the shot control profile. Surface finish defects include surface roughness and staining caused by lubricant burn off. Visual passed castings display none of the above-mentioned external defects. X-ray examination and pressure testing of heat-treated castings from the consecutive visual passed castings show improvement over the five days. These initial-stage industrialization efforts pave the way for process commercialization.

Abstract:
This study is to explore the main factors affecting the quality of consecutive interpretation of English majored students at School of Languages and Tourism (SLT), Hanoi University of Industry (HaUI). The data for this paper is mainly collected from a semi-structured interview which was adapted from the research by Chunli et al. (2021). The researchers interviewed 4 lecturers at SLT, then compared the answers with an in-depth analysis and review of common errors in students’ interpretation in the final test of the 7th semester which was assessed by the criteria for interpreting assessment proposed by Zwischenberger (2010). The research findings indicated that language competence, interpreting techniques, and psychological elements had great influence on the quality of students’ consecutive interpretation. Good preparation, avoiding perfectionism and practice are key points for students to improve the consecutive interpretation quality. The paper, hopefully, brings deeper understanding of consecutive interpretation as well as helpful information for lecturers and researchers in language study.

Abstract:
ABSTRACT CONTEXT AND OBJECTIVE: This study aimed to evaluate different mathematical post-analysis methods of determining lactate threshold in highly and lowly trained endurance runners. DESIGN AND SETTING: Experimental laboratory study, in a tertiary-level public university hospital. METHOD: Twenty-seven male endurance runners were divided into two training load groups: lowly trained (frequency < 4 times per week, < 6 consecutive months, training velocity ≥ 5.0 min/km) and highly trained (frequency ≥ 4 times per week, ≥ 6 consecutive months, training velocity < 5.0 min/km). The subjects performed an incremental treadmill protocol, with 1 km/h increases at each subsequent 4-minute stage. Fingerprint blood-lactate analysis was performed at the end of each stage. The lactate threshold (i.e. the running velocity at which blood lactate levels began to exponentially increase) was measured using three different methods: increase in blood lactate of 1 mmol/l at stages (DT1), absolute 4 mmol/l blood lactate concentration (4 mmol), and the semi-log method (semi-log). ANOVA was used to compare different lactate threshold methods and training groups. RESULTS: Highly trained athletes showed significantly greater lactate thresholds than lowly trained runners, regardless of the calculation method used. When all the subject data were combined, DT1 and semi-log were not different, while 4 mmol was significantly lower than the other two methods. These same trends were observed when comparing lactate threshold methods in the lowly trained group. However, 4 mmol was only significantly lower than DT1 in the highly trained group. CONCLUSION: The 4 mmol protocol did not show lactate threshold measurements comparable with DT1 and semi-log protocols among lowly trained athletes.

Abstract:
This research presents a new study in reactive distillation by using consecutive reaction: the saponification reaction of diethyl adipate (DA) with sodium hydroxide solution .
The effect of three parameters were studied through a design of experiments applying 23 factorial design . These parameters were : the mole ratio of DA to NaOH solution (0.1 and 1) , NaOH solution concentration (3 N and 8 N) , and batch time (1.5 hr. and 3.5 hr.) . The conversion of DA to sodium monoethyladipate(SMA)(intermediate product) was the effect of these parameters which was detected . Also , the percentage purity of the intermediate product was recorded . The results showed that increasing mole ratio of DA to NaOHsolution increases the conversion and percentage purity to a maximum value within the range of study . The effect of NaOH solution concentration decreases the conversion and percentage purity to specified value within the range of study . The effect of batch time on conversion and percentage purity , when NaOH solution concentration (3 N) is as follows : the increasing in batch time decreases the conversion and percentage purity to specified value within the range of study . When NaOH solution concentration (8 N) increasing batch time decreases the conversion , while percentage purity increases with increasing batch time to a maximum value within the range of study . The maximum attainable conversion within the studied range of parameters was eighteen fold of the base case , while the maximum percentage purity was (99.40 %) .
Empirical equation was obtained using statistical analysis of experimental results . The empirical results of relative conversion was drawn . The empirical graphs showed linear variation .

Abstract:
This work is the result of the doctoral thesis entitled Pilgrimage of Bom Jesus da Lapa: Social Reproduction of the Family and Female Gender Identity, specifically the second chapter that talks about women in the Pilgrimage of Bom Jesus da Lapa, emphasizing gender relations, analyzing the location of the pilgrimage as a social reproduction of the patriarchal family and female gender identity. The research scenario is the Bom Jesus da Lapa Pilgrimage, which has been held for 329 years, in that city, located in the West part of Bahia. The research participants are pilgrim women who are in the age group between 50 and 70 years old and have participated, for more than five consecutive years in the Bom Jesus da Lapa Pilgrimage, belonging to five Brazilian states (Bahia, Minas Gerais, São Paulo, Espírito Santo and Goiás) that register a higher frequency of attendance at this religious event. We used bibliographic, qualitative, field and documentary research and data collection as our methodology; we applied participant observation and semi-structured interviews as a technique. We concluded that the Bom Jesus da Lapa Pilgrimage is a location for family social reproduction and the female gender identity, observing a contrast in the resignification of the role and in the profile of the pilgrim women from Bom Jesus da Lapa, alternating between permanence and the transformation of gender identity coming from patriarchy.

AbstractClinical hyperthermia (i.e., heating of tumor tissue to 40–43 °C) is used in clinical oncology to enhance the therapeutic effect of chemotherapy and radiotherapy. Most recurrent breast cancer and melanoma lesions reach up to a few cm deep and can be effectively treated with currently available superficial hyperthermia devices using infrared or microwave radiation. Effective heating of more challenging and complex semi-superficial or semi-deep tumor lesions, including intact breast or lesions near silicone implants, requires dedicated treatment protocols. Herein, new treatment protocols are presented, which combine simultaneous and consecutive use of different wIRA, microwave, and radiofrequency hyperthermia devices. Examples are included, showing the clinical setup, applicator choice, and invasive and noninvasive thermometry.

Abstract:
Abstract Low and unreliable rainfall, along with poor soil health, is a main constraint to maize production in the semi-arid parts of Kenya that account for over 79% of the country's land area. In the vast county of Laikipia, farmers continue to plant maize despite the predominantly low quantities of precipitation. Participatory farmer experimentation with Conservation Agriculture (CA) was undertaken for six consecutive growing seasons between July 2013 and December 2016 to determine the effectiveness of CA as a method of improving soil properties and enhancing maize yields with the limited rainfall quantities received in these parts of Kenya. The main CA practices tested include chisel tine furrow opening (ripping) and live legume (Lablab purpureus) cover crop, as well as maize stover mulches, all implemented under varying inorganic fertilizer rates. The research was done across 12 administrative locations of Laikipia County where soils are mainly Phaeozems and Vertisols with a clay-loam texture. The research design used was researcher-designed and farmer-managed. In each of the 12 trial sites, participatory farmers' assessments and field days were carried out as a way of outreach to the bigger farming communities around the trial sites. The research findings obtained demonstrated that the use of CA impacts positively on soil properties and is a viable practice for enhancing maize yields in these moisture deficit-prone parts of the country. Soil chemical analysis assessment results showed that CA impacted positively on a number of soil mineral components including organic carbon, total nitrogen, phosphorus, potassium, calcium and pH. Midseason chlorophyll content assessment of the maize crop showed that there was good response to fertilizer application, as well as to mulching with crop residues for soil cover. Maize grain yield data also showed that the use of a CA package comprising chisel tine ripping combined with mulching by plant residues and use of mineral fertilizer resulted in a two- to threefold increase in grain yields above the farmer practice control. Mean maize grain yield in farmer practice plots was 1067 kg ha-1 compared with the CA-treated plot with mineral fertilization that yielded 2192 kg ha-1.

Abstract:
Muscle-computer interfaces (MCIs) based on surface electromyography (EMG) pattern recognition have been developed based on two consecutive components: feature extraction and classification algorithms. Many features and classifiers are proposed and evaluated, which yield the high classification accuracy and the high number of discriminated motions under a single-session experimental condition. However, there are many limitations to use MCIs in the real-world contexts, such as the robustness over time, noise, or low-level EMG activities. Although the selection of the suitable robust features can solve such problems, EMG pattern recognition has to design and train for a particular individual user to reach high accuracy. Due to different body compositions across users, a feasibility to use anthropometric variables to calibrate EMG recognition system automatically/semi-automatically is proposed. This chapter presents the relationships between robust features extracted from actions associated with surface EMG signals and twelve related anthropometric variables. The strong and significant associations presented in this chapter could benefit a further design of the MCIs based on EMG pattern recognition.

Abstract:
Abstract Mitigating the risk of MIC in oil field production relies heavily on biocides and mechanical cleaning such as pigging. Biocides are often the only option for treating semi-stagnant, sour vessels such as SWD’s, but it can be difficult to know whether biocide treatments are being effective when it comes to stopping or preventing corrosion. To study the effect of repeated biocide treatments to mitigate MIC, we used a once-through biofilm reactor to generate and remediate corrosive biofilms on carbon steel coupons grown solely from a produced water sample from a West Texas SWD. After four weeks of growth, the reactor started receiving a weekly batch treatment of biocide for four consecutive weeks. Coupons were pulled and replaced before and after each batch treatment. ATP quantification was used to test biocide efficacy in real time on sessile and planktonic samples. ATP quantification showed an ~80% percent reduction in sessile microbial activity after each biocide batch and a subsequent 66 – 1649% rebound by the time of the next treatment. Despite this rapid rebound in microbial activity each week, corrosion analysis showed a significant reduction in both pitting and general corrosion rates. DNA sequencing on sessile samples showed that biocide treatments eliminated Methanocalculus, a hydrogenotrophic methanogen, from biofilm reactor bulk fluids.

Abstract:
Conventionally, gesture recognition based on non-intrusive muscle-computer interfaces required a strongly-supervised learning algorithm and a large amount of labeled training signals of surface electromyography (sEMG). In this work, we show that temporal relationship of sEMG signals and data glove provides implicit supervisory signal for learning the gesture recognition model. To demonstrate this, we present a semi-supervised learning framework with a novel Siamese architecture for sEMG-based gesture recognition. Specifically, we employ auxiliary tasks to learn visual representation; predicting the temporal order of two consecutive sEMG frames; and, optionally, predicting the statistics of 3D hand pose with a sEMG frame. Experiments on the NinaPro, CapgMyo and csl-hdemg datasets validate the efficacy of our proposed approach, especially when the labeled samples are very scarce.

Abstract:
Automatic video polyp segmentation (VPS) is highly valued for the early diagnosis of colorectal cancer. However, existing methods are limited in three respects: 1) most of them work on static images, while ignoring the temporal information in consecutive video frames; 2) all of them are fully supervised and easily overfit in presence of limited annotations; 3) the context of polyp (i.e., lumen, specularity and mucosa tissue) varies in an endoscopic clip, which may affect the predictions of adjacent frames. To resolve these challenges, we propose a novel Temporally Consistent Context-Free Network (TCCNet) for semi-supervised VPS. It contains a segmentation branch and a propagation branch with a co-training scheme to supervise the predictions of unlabeled image. To maintain the temporal consistency of predictions, we design a Sequence-Corrected Reverse Attention module and a Propagation-Corrected Reverse Attention module. A Context-Free Loss is also proposed to mitigate the impact of varying contexts. Extensive experiments show that even trained under 1/15 label ratio, TCCNet is comparable to the state-of-the-art fully supervised methods for VPS. Also, TCCNet surpasses existing semi-supervised methods for natural image and other medical image segmentation tasks.

Abstract Tool geometry directly influences the dynamic performance of milling operations. Both surface properties and stability behavior are significantly influenced by the regeneration effect. The regeneration phenomenon is modelled by delay differential equations with delays originated from the time passed between consecutive flute passes. This work presents the implementation study of a constrained general optimization scheme for cutting edges of cylindrical milling cutters based on functional minimization principle. Mathematically, this leads to the determination of the corresponding weight function of a distributed delay differential equation. The presented semi-analytical methodology is based on the general milling model implemented in the semidiscretization framework.

Abstract:
Abstract. In the field of additive manufacturing (AM) technologies, the development of metal-based extrusion processes constitutes a significant industrial trend in the recent years. Respective processes are differentiated into powder bed, powder-fed and wire-fed depending on the used feedstock. Among those, powder-fed AM represents the most widely used approach, despite its physical limitations leading to intense thermal gradients and an uncontrollable defective microstructure of produced parts. In this context, extrusion-based AM using a wire semi-finished product in the semi-solid state offers a novel alternative for the direct processing of metallic alloys, avoiding the limitations mentioned. For this reason, a new method for consecutive extrusion of semi-solid AlSiMg aluminum wires has been developed at the Institute for Metal Forming (IFU, Stuttgart, Germany), particularly investigating the influence of the material´s microstructure on the process result. By modifying microstructure via heat treatment, a specific modification of the rheological material behavior can be achieved in terms of a pronounced shear-thinning characteristic, thus systematically affecting extrusion and deposition. First, an experimental setup for continuously extruding semi-sold aluminum wires was realized. Subsequently, experimental investigations were carried out on the extrusion of aluminum wires prepared via the strain induced melt activated (SIMA) process as well as untreated aluminum wires, using a conductively heated printhead concept. The objective was to determine process parameters necessary for successful extrusion and deposition of the modified aluminum material as well as the final proof of concept regarding a specific transformation of the material´s microstructure during the extrusion process.

Abstract:
A method was studied to evaluate the influences of aircraft fuel explosion and consecutive fire that would be expected to occur after a postulated aircraft crash on a BWR reactor building. In addition to the classical semi-empirical method for vapor cloud explosion (VCE) to evaluate overpressure, The Fire Dynamics Simulator version 6 (FDS6) was applied to analyze the fireball evolution by combustion of the dispersed fuel droplets, and the consecutive pool fire. The FDS spray model was used to simulate the fuel droplet dispersal. Input parameters such as droplet initial velocity and initial dispersal direction were presumed on the basis of the observations from the IMPACT water missile experiment. Our calculation result was in good agreement with the experimental data in terms of the droplet ‘cloud’ expanding speed by approximately 20%. This modeling manner for the droplet dispersal was also applied to the analysis of explosion in a middle-size commercial aircraft crash to the sidewall of a building that assumed a BWR reactor building. The analysis predicted that approximately 60% of aircraft fuel would be consumed in the initial fireball and most of the residual fuel would attach to the ground area close to the wall. This result can be used for the realistic determination of the initial mass and position of the residual aircraft fuel to evaluate wall integrity against thermal attack and transport of the combustion products from the secondary fire.

Abstract:
Abstract The transition of a spatially developing boundary layer is studied through highly resolved Large Eddy Simulations (LES) when subjected to external disturbances in the presence of surface roughness. Three rough wall conditions are considered in the present analysis, where roughness elements are homogeneous in the spanwise direction with cross-sectional shapes taken as triangle, square and semi-circle. The aspect ratio (s/k) considered here is 3, where k is the roughness height, and s is the spacing between the consecutive rows of roughness elements in the streamwise direction. The inlet flow Reynolds number based on the momentum thickness and freestream velocity (Reθ) is 360, while the freestream turbulence (fst) is 2.5%. The transition mechanisms are observed to change significantly with roughness shapes. Attributing to the sharp tip of the triangular shape, the shear layer trips to transition from laminar to turbulent flow via Kelvin-Helmholtz (K-H) instability. Whereas Λ-vortices and longitudinal streaks are the geneses for the boundary layer transition in square and semi-circular elements, respectively. Further, the influence of roughness on transition onset is explored by analyzing the turbulence statistics such as rms quantities, shear stress and spectral response.
