Abstract:
This study examines the relationship between individual variables and ESL progress among nine Kurdish and seven Bosnian immigrants. All participants are adult refugees who arrived in Canada with virtually no English. Significant correlations are found between the dependent variables of oral and written progress and the independent variables of literacy level, years of schooling, and ethnicity. Contingency, text quality, and text quantity are also examined. Although the number of participants is small and the number of variables examined is large, it is hypothesized that in 18-21 months high literates will progress from low beginner to advanced, semi-literates from pre-beginner to low intermediate, and pre-literates from pre-beginner to low beginner. The article concludes with implications for ESL programming and future research.

Abstract:
Apart from historical and contextual factors complicating the mining industry, Lonmin Platinum’smanagement of employee relationships was further complicated by its diverse workforce ofapproximately 20 000 employees consisting of literates, semi-literates and illiterates. In addition, the company comprised five business units, each with their own corporate identity. Within thiscontext it was expected that Lonmin’s relationship with its employees would take some strain. While the relationship between corporate image and stakeholder management has been debated, the impact of symbolic corporate identity elements on specific relationship dimensions has not yetbeen investigated and is addressed in this article by means of the following research question:What is the relationship between employees’ perceptions of symbolic corporate identity elementsand employer-employee relationships at Lonmin Platinum? This study indicated a relationship between employees’ perceptions of how effectively the company reached it objectives, specifically a safe working environment, a healthy working environment,socio-economic empowerment and accountability, and the quality of its employee relationships.

Abstract:
In investigating the reading practices of Boer combatants during the South African War, diaries, letters, and reminiscences were consulted. The state of literacy reveals a picture of a small number of highly literate men, a larger group of adequately literate men, a still larger group of semi-literates, and the illiterate. Reading matter included the Bible, newspapers, and books. Issues raised are: Did literacy (or illiteracy) influence military decision-making or troop morale? Were certain works making some impact on the battlefield? Was the practical experience the Boers had gained before the war more successful in planning strategy and tactics than literacy?

Abstract:
Reverse strategies are used in judgments of similarity by hunter-gatherers who prefer using shapes (attributes) in patterns, and literates who prefer judging relations among shapes The Kohs Block Design Test was given to healthy hunter-gatherers, 19 stone-age, preliterate, Amazonian Auca Indians and 130 semi-literate Dani and Asmat of inland Indonesian Western New Guinea. Further, 196 literate Indonesian city dwellers served as controls. The Auca and the Dani and Asmat groups preferentially constructed 20 specific, “nonrandom” modifications similar to the Kohs Block Design Test and preserved the salient component shapes but neglected relations among them. Hunter-gatherers' survival depends on prompt assessment of the salient shapes of prey and attackers. By contrast, literacy skills require painstaking assessment of subtle intrapattern spatial relations among shapes.

The knowledge of signs and symptoms of vitamin A deficiency (VAD) was nil among illiterate mothers and low among literates; with primary education, adjusted odds ratio (OR): 0.01 (95% CI: 0.00, 0.06) and with secondary education, OR: 0.19 (95% CI: 0.06, 0.62) compared to mothers with graduation and above. Conclusions: There is a need to increase the awareness and knowledge about VAD among mothers with children below 5 years in the southern state of AP.

Abstract:
Retailing is one of the important industry in India recorded for almost 10 percent of nation’s GDP. The lesser wage earning workers are vulnerable to aggravation and other discrimination at work place. In the informal textile retail shops, women have to pass through numerous problems as they have to manage with both sides of life, say work and family. Predominantly, such women are semi-literates, educated unemployed and financially deprived. It is revealed from the data that there are 58 percent of the women workers are between ages of 30 to 40 and there is no women worker above 45 years. It is clearly shows that the shop owners are not interested to recruit or retain the women workers above 45 years. The educational status of workers constitutes an average of secondary level schooling and they could able to read, write in the local language and understand English slightly. Almost 60 percent of the women workers are belonging to marginalized section of the society. In the present study, social and economic status of sample respondents are analyzed and found that they are poorly paid in terms of wages, and work under deprived and vulnerable working condition. Durdulov, Maja. "Italiano popolare a Fiume. Lettere di semicolti (1915-1945)." Doctoral thesis, Università degli studi di Padova, 2018. http://hdl.handle.net/11577/3422205.

Full text
Abstract:
The work focuses on the study of the writings of the semi-literate in Fiume between 1915 and 1945. The corpus of documents was collected in the State Archive of Rijeka (Državni arhiv u Rijeci) in the A8 series of the 'Questura di Fiume – Riječka kvestura’ containing the files of persons considered dangerous to state security. The files, in addition to including documents of various kinds, contain letters produced by the same holders of files and addressed to the authorities, as well as private letters and postcards. Within the material were selected documents potentially produced by semi-literate authors, i.e. those who do not have a full command of the written language. The objective of the paper is to describe the corpus of documents and the most salient linguistic characteristics in reference to 'italiano popolare'. The analysis also deals with the identification and description of linguistic traits considered specific to the geographical area of Fiume, characterized by the presence of the fiuman dialect (a Venetian dialect), inserted within a context of plurilinguism, dominated mostly by the Italian and the Croatian languages. To provide a complete overview of the corpus, it was considered necessary to analyze the texts also from a thematic point of view, contextualizing the subjects in the context of the historical dynamics of the examined time. Moreover, given the complexity of the linguistic and cultural situation of Fiume, resulted from the intricate political developments that concern it, a summary has been provided of the historical and cultural events that have marked it profoundly over the last centuries.<br>Il lavoro è incentrato sullo studio delle scritture dei semicolti a Fiume tra il 1915 e il 1945.
