Abstract:
The paper considers the peculiarities of translation of such a stylistic feature in G. Flaubert’s novel "Madame Bovary" as a semicolon. The research featured extracts from six English translations and focused on the use of semicolons in complex sentences in position between clauses without conjunction and before et. The continuous sampling method and the comparative method were employed to detect and analyze the punctuation mark and its use. The research objective was to verify whether the author’s punctuation was translated and to what extent. The analysis of the corpus shows that, despite some individual preferences, translators respected isomorphism in punctuation in the great majority of cases, i.e. they used semicolon and equivalent conjunctions. Isomorphism’s percentage appeared higher than in Russian translations, which was possibly due to the fact that English punctuation system has more in common with the French than with the Russian one. The degree of fidelity can possibly be explained by the strategies used by a particular translator rather than by the contemporary punctuation tendencies. The results of this research can be used in preparation of multilingual corpora of parallel texts, as well as in textbooks on comparative grammar and syntax.

Abstract:
Abstract Drawing on a corpus study conducted using the German national newspaper DIE ZEIT, the paper studies usage contexts of the semicolon, considering syntactic as well as text linguistic factors. In the vast majority of cases, the semicolon is found to connect main clauses; the linkage of subordinate clauses and nominal phrases is significantly less frequent. Moreover, the average semicolon sentence is significantly longer and structurally more complex than the average sentence of the same corpus. However, the sentence elements connected by the semicolon are shorter and less complex than average sentences. The main claim of the article is that the semicolon marks coherence between two clauses. For the most part, the event expressed in the second clause is in some respect similar or equivalent to the first one or provides an explanation, an example or a reason. Less frequently, the second clause denotes a result, implies a contrast or operates in a speech-act domain. While these relations usually are not expressed explicitly by a connector, the coherence is often reflected by co-reference chains extending across both clauses.

Abstract:
The article outlines the way the English system of punctuation marks is presented in contemporary ELT research and practice. The following types of sources are considered and analyzed in the article: grammar books for teaching English as the first, second or foreign language; reference books and web-sites aimed at preparing students for IELTS and TOEFL; books belonging to the genre known as popular science; purely scientific works on punctuation in general and the semicolon in particular. The main goals of the research are to reveal the central tendencies in teaching English punctuation on the example of the so-called weighty stops of vertical segmentation, namely the semicolon, and to see whether they manage to present a certain norm of using the stop. Thus, the present paper focuses on the semicolon one of the most controversial stops in the system, which has been proved to function both at the syntactic and stylistic levels. It is shown that a formal / grammatical approach is the most common way to treat punctuation in ELT literature; however, it does not take into account stylistic and prosodic peculiarities of the stops and thus fails to show the whole spectrum of its usage, as well as its phonetic and stylistic potential. Consequently, such an approach should not be applied to English one of the languages exhibiting a semantic-stylistic type of punctuation. It is proposed that the approach to be used in teaching English punctuation most effectively is pragmalinguistics, since it exploits a wide range of methods and means of analyzing a text, and also considers and highlights all the aspects of using the stops (their syntactic function, stylistic capacities and prosodic characteristics). Moreover, the article poses the question that the current methodology of the approach has to be further developed.

This article attempts to describe some of the pragmatic and semantic functions of two important punctuation marks. These are the semicolon (;) and the colon (:). The reason for this description is that no studies have provided a detailed description of the pragmatic and semantic functions of these marks. However, in this study, it was found that the punctuation marks have linguistic implications that are not recognized by linguists nor by translators. Abstract:
The mission of the English Project (www.englishproject.org) is to explore and explain the English language in order to educate and entertain the English speaker, and 2015 was the year of punctuation for the Project because 6 February 2015 was the 500th anniversary of the death of Aldus Manutius. Aldus was a Venetian printer who shaped the comma, invented the semicolon and created italic fonts. He may have been the greatest punctuator of all time. We ‘punctuated’ the year by looking in turn at the full stop, the semicolon, the colon, the comma, the slash, the hyphen, the parenthesis, the exclamation, the apostrophe, the quotation mark and the question mark. Those twelve provide the fundamentals of English language punctuation, and all of them do more than one job. If we had a complete and unambiguous set of punctuation marks, we might need as many as 50, but the writing world does not want the trouble of such precision. In just same way, the writing world has never accepted the need for 44 separate letters to match the 44 separate sounds of the English language. Providing a separate grapheme (letter) for every phoneme (sound) is the linguist's business. Punctuation marks are ambiguous therefore. They suggest rather than define. They rely on context and the quick wittedness of the reader. If precision is needed, there are proofreader's marks. Merriam-Webster lists 42 of them, but proofreading is a special practice. Punctuation marks are a special set of symbols, and of symbols and signs there is no end. Punctuation marks are regularly appropriated by the devisers of computer languages. Punctuation marks can become logotypes – ‘a single piece of type that prints a word’. The exclamation mark can be made to work like &, $, or @. There are fuzzy edges to the subject of punctuation.

Abstract:
The article discusses the results obtained with the help of a computer program created for the automatic analysis of strophic syntax. The program was created using Boris Tomashevsky’s method, which is based on the analysis of punctuation at the end of the poetic lines (the strength of the syntactic pause is evaluated depending on the absence or presence of a punctuation sign: a comma, a dash, a semicolon or a full pause / question mark / exclamation mark). The application of this method to different types of poetic texts made it possible to describe general and unique trends, characterizing authors of different national traditions and periods. This result shows the necessity of a macrostudy that would include a larger number of strophic forms, texts and time periods.

Abstract:
We report on an investigation into the systematic errors made by a large group of programming language students over a period of two years. The investigation and the learner-centered longitudinal study of which it formed a part, were both inspired by recent research into second natural language acquisition. The results of the investigation demonstrate that students had major difficulties using the semicolon, the sequencing operator of the programming language ALGOL 68. We argue that this difficulty is due to the fact that students did not immediately understand a specific, simply stated rule of syntax, introduced in a decontextualized way, but rather that their understanding of the rule developed with their increasing experience of using it in different contexts. We suggest that such systematic low-level syntactic errors may be indicative of higher-level misconceptions regarding the structure of the language.

The Aeneid, like the Iliad, opens with a seven-line paragraph. The question arises: is this paragraph also a single sentence, consisting of the first three words arma uirumlque cano as main sentence, with all the rest forming one long relative clause of six and a half lines, introduced by qui in line 1, and organized round the one indicative verb apart from cano, namely, uenit in line 2? A glance at the editions confirms that we have a problem here. Everyone agrees on commas after cano, superum, iram, passus and of course on a full stop after Romae. The uncertainties arise after litora and after Latio. Whereas Sidgwick (1890) and Page (1894) put commas at both these points, Mynors (1969), followed both by Austin (1971) and R. D. Williams (1972) puts a comma after litora, but a semicolon after Latio, while Hirtzel (1900) puts a dash at both points. What difference does it make?

Abstract:
AbstractAmong the different topics studied by palaeography, punctuation has traditionally been disregarded by scholars for being considered arbitrary and unsystematic (Salmon 1988: 285). However, some studies carried out over the last few decades have demonstrated that the English punctuation system underwent a process of standardisation which started in the Middle English period, from a purely rhetorical to a grammatical function. Moreover, it was towards the sixteenth century when a set of punctuation marks was introduced (i.e. the semicolon), a fact that restricted the functions of major punctuation marks up to that time, such as the period and the comma (Salmon 1999: 40). The present paper analyses the punctuation system in Glasgow University Library, MS Hunter 135 (ff. 34r–121v), a volume that is most suitable for such a study as it contains two different text types belonging to the genre of medical writing: a surgical treatise and a collection of medical recipes. The results confirm that the different punctuation marks are unevenly distributed in the texts under study and, more importantly, their main functions are found at different levels within the text.

Abstract:
Most interpretational problems in law pertain to the meaning of words. However, in this paper I address problems caused in Polish courts by grammar (namely: syntax and inflexion) of legal provisions. One can distinguish five main sources of grammatical issues in judicial interpretation of law: syntax of a sentence (i.e. order of words), conjunctive words (i.e. i, lub), punctuation marks (i.e. comma, semicolon, dash), nominal grammatical categories (i.e. number, gender), verbal grammatical categories (i. e. aspect, tense, mood). Traditional Polish canons of interpretation offer no clues on how to deal with such issues, stating only that statutes should be construed in accordance with the rules of grammar. In fact, cases in which such interpretational issues occur, are decided in a highly incoherent manner. The courts tend to feel a tension between grammatical form of a provision and its purpose, function, or other extra-linguistic values. I think the main reason of such controversy is a very limited vision of grammar shared by the courts, stemmed from primary school rather than contemporary linguistic theories.

Abstract:
The paper presents a corpus-based research (GRITTEXT) on modern Italian literary texts. According to a writer-oriented framework, it is aimed to analyse the writer's thought movements while he is composing instead of considering the communicative effects of the text on the reader. The period is the linguistic unit of reference chosen for analysis and is identified by strong punctuation marks (dot, question mark, exclamation point, sequence of dots). It is not necessarily composed by a sentence, since it can correspond to a set of clauses and any kind of phrases. The research made emerge the pervasiveness of parataxis in literary texts. Two or more independent syntactic constituents can be connected within a period only through weak punctuation marks (comma, semicolon, colon). Each constituent corresponds to a semantic scene characterized by an autonomous point of view depending on the protagonist, the narrator or the same writer. The paratactic period is a style device to express within a same representation the narrative joints arising to the writer in the course of writing but above all the different perspectives of each scene that are also temporally ordered. The paratactic period corresponds to a unitary multi-focus, multi-modal, multi time representation whose truth value cannot be verified unlike a proposition

Abstract:
The article deals with the method of automatic detection of authors’ gender identity on the material of fiction prose of 1980–2000. During this period, there is a special construct, called “women’s prose”, which is characterized by a special genre and stylistic originality. We set ourselves the task to find out whether the concept of “women’s prose” refers only to the non-text reality or is clearly reflected at the level of language. We have collected corpus of texts 1980–2000 and conducted that identified the most effective machine learning algorithms for the classification of male and female prose. This research focuses on methods for automatically determining the gender identity of authors on the material of prose from 1960 to 2000. The purpose of this work is to identify optimal methods for automatically determining the gender identity of the authors. The objectives of this study include highlighting the grammatical and stylistic features of prose from 1960 to 2000 and, in particular, women's prose and texts of 18th – 19th centuries; tracing the changes in the distribution of usage different parts of speech and punctuation for a specified period and conducting an experiment to identify the most effective algorithm for the classification of literary texts by using machine learning. The analysis revealed that women and men often use in their texts the following parts of speech: nouns, verbs, prepositions, pronominal nouns, conjunctions, and adjectives that reflects the specific artistic style. In addition, analysis was made of the use of the most commonly used punctuation marks from the given list: question mark, exclamation point, comma, colon, semicolon, period, comma. It has been observed that women are more actively using the means of punctuation as a means of expression in modern literature: the share of the use of exclamation, question marks and commas the writers is much higher than the value obtained through the analysis of men’s texts. The work also contains an analysis of the distribution of parts of speech and punctuation of literary texts of men and women of 18th – 19th centuries. We performed experiment to identify the most effective algorithm for determining the gender identity of the author. It was found that the most effective classifiers of literature are the implementation of algorithms as BayesNet and SMO.

Abstract:
This paper analyzes the comparative usage of punctuation marks in translated (English>Spanish) and non-translated newspaper articles. Excerpts were extracted from the online International News sections published in the US and Mexico by Reuters and the Associated Press. Hypothesis testing and corpus-based descriptive statistics were used to study the frequency of usage of punctuation marks, such as commas, periods, colons, semicolons, en-dashes and em-dashes, as well as sentence length, in translated and non-translated texts in the context of journalistic writing. Results from the analysis reveal a tendency to carry over periods, colons and em-dashes from English source texts into translated Spanish texts, producing a source language residual effect or ‘translationese.’ Data gathered from concordancing tools also suggest a residual effect in the usage of commas and semicolons, as well as in sentencing. These results reflect, among other factors, a lack of adherence to style guide conventions.

Abstract:
The history of the Gentzenization of relevant logics goes back to Kripke [17], who in 1959 Gentzenized R→ and went on to prove its decidability. Formulae were separated by commas on the left side of the turnstile, the commas just representing nested implications. Kripke employed just a singleton formula to the right of the turnstile. He also considered adding negation, as well as other connectives, but it was not until 1961 that Belnap and Wallace, in [5], Gentzenized and proved its decidability, though their Gentzenization employed commas on both sides of the turnstile. Subsequently, in 1966, the logic R without distribution, now called LR (for lattice R), was Gentzenized in a similar style by Meyer in [20]. He also went on to show decidability for LR by extending Kripke's argument. Later, in 1969, Dunn Gentzenized R+ (published in [1], pp. 381–391) using two structural connectives (commas and semicolons) to the left of the turnstile, and with a single formula to the right. Here, the commas represent conjunction and the semicolons represent an intensional conjunction, called “fusion”. This is all nicely set out in McRobbie [19], where he also introduces left-handed Gentzenizations and analytic tableaux for a number of fragments of relevant logics. In 1979, further work on distributionless logic was done by Grishin, in a series of papers, including [16], in which he produced a Gentzenization of quantified RW without distribution (which we will call LRWQ), and used it to prove the decidability of this quantified logic.

Anniversaries punctuate all our lives, providing the semicolons that cause us to pause and think again. Everyone has plenty of personal anniversaries but there are also cultural and institutional ones that we can use as an opportunity to remember but also as a platform to leap forward. How far have we come and where do we want to be in the future? The recent announcement of an International Polar Year (IPY) in 2007 is linked to the fiftieth anniversary of the International Geophysical Year, an event that proved to have such momentous consequences both for Antarctic science and for international politics.

Abstract:

Semicolonial nesting and conservation of the Montagu's harrier Circus pygargus in rapeseed fields in Southern Podlasie (eastern Poland) Agrocoenosis are important nest sites for Montagu's harriers. In 2009, a large semicolony of 14 Montagu's harrier pairs was recorded in a rapeseed field in eastern Poland. The breeding colony arose due to a shortage of crops of suitable height in the period of nest building, caused by unfavourable weather conditions and a delayed onset of vegetation growth. The mean clutch size and hatchling number was 3.62, and the mean number of chicks in pairs that bred successfully was 2.00. Losses in broods due to predation and farming treatments were low (2% and 6%, respectively).

Abstract:
Abstract Taking x-ray images goes back over 100 years. Since then, there have been numerous advances in x-ray technology and these have been increasingly applied in helping the manufacturing of electronic components and assemblies, as well as in their failure analysis. Most recently, this has been rapidly driven by the reduction in device and feature size and the movement to using newer, lower density materials within the structures, such as copper wire replacing gold wire as the interconnection material of choice within components. Another driver for developments is the engineering of single 3D packages with multiple chips stacked vertically one on top of the other, which results in smaller and more efficient packaging of devices. In order to meet these challenges and those in the future, there have been a number of recent key improvements to the vital components within x-ray systems. The choice of available technologies, however, means selecting the tube/detector combination, which is optimum for a particular electronics inspection application, is no longer so clear-cut. For example, one configuration may provide certain benefits that are applicable for one area of electronics inspection, whilst being less valid for others. This paper will review the various x-ray tube and detector types that are available and explain the implications of these choices for electronics inspection in terms of what they provide for inspection regarding image resolution, magnification, tube power, detector pixel size and the effects of detector radiation damage, amongst others. This paper will also look in detail at the capabilities of high end CT systems to inspect wafer bumps, copper pillars and TSV's, new designs are reducing key dimensions of all of these interconnections challenging x-ray systems to produce clear images.
