Abstract:
This research is backed up by the desire to understand and interpret the semiotic meaning in Ny. Talis (Kisah Mengenai Madras) novel by Budi Darma. The purpose of this study is to describe: (1) hermeneutic code; (2) semantic/semes code; (3) symbolic codes; (4) proaretic code, and; (5) cultural codes in Ny. Talis (Kisah Mengenai Madras) by Budi Darma. The theory used to analyze the data is Roland Barthes' semiotics which focuses on semiotic codes. The approach used is poststructural semiotics by applying heuristic and hermeneutic semiotic reading methods. Research data in the form of dialog quotes, words, sentences, and paragraphs that are related to the focus of research on semiotic codes. research data sources come from Ny. Talis (Kisah Mengenai Madras) by Budi Darma (1996) published by Balai Pustaka. The results of the research and discussion show that the semiotic codes in Ny. Talis (Kisah Mengenai Madras) novel there is a lexias fragment that connects five semiotic codes. Liaison lexias is nothing but the meaning of signification about death and matters related to death. In addition, the reality of life refers to death.

Abstract:
This article compares the material pollution of life's elementary resources, i.e., water, soil, and air, with the semiotic pollution of the elementary resources of sign-processes, i.e., channel, sign-matter, and message; code, signifier, and signified; as well as context, sender, and recipient. It is claimed that semiotic pollution interferes with sign-processes as much as material pollution interferes with the fundamental processes of life; both types of pollution are similar in that they produce stress for human beings in current societies. It is argued that semiotics is able to provide the conceptual tools necessary to develop policies that can reduce semiotic pollution. As is shown, however, additional research is required to operationalize and metricize generalized concepts of semiotic pollutionsuch as "channel-related", "semiosis-related", and "situation-related noise".

The article attempts to conduct a semiotic analysis of the space of neo-Protestant worship. For this purpose, as a methodological tool, general cultural spatial codes were used. The danger of semiotic error in determining the hierarchy of levels of expression and content is noted. The object of research is considered – the space of neo-Protestant worship. A semiotic comparative analysis of this space and the traditional Christian temple is made. Groups of spatial codes are considered in detail, their denotative and connotative interpretation is carried out. The emphasis is placed on the elements of visual semiotics of the space of neo-Protestant worship. The semiotic transformation of the hierophanic code is noted. The problem of aesthetics of neo-Protestant worship is posed.

Abstract:
The problem in this research is the lack of alternative literature teaching materials used by teachers in the learning process. This study aims to analyze the semiotics of Roland Barthes in the animated film Entong which will be used as an alternative material for teaching literature in elementary schools. The research method applied in this research is content analysis method. Data collection techniques were carried out by observation and documentation. The results of the observation show that there are semiotic codes of Roland Barthes in the episodes of the animated film Entong. This happens because, data retrieval is taken from the YouTube application. The semiotic codes contained in the animated film Entong are hermeneutic codes that function to see the problems of a narrative and create a solution or an answer, semiotic codes function to a connecting relation code which is the connotation of a person, place, object whose sign is a character, code symbolic functions as symbols, preauretic codes function to see the basic narrative actions in various sequences that may be indicated, and cultural codes function to see the cultural side of a story. Based on Roland Barthes' semiotics contained in the animated film Entong, it can be used as an alternative to teaching literature in elementary schools so that students can apply it in their daily lives.

Abstract:
AbstractThe article seeks to examine the largely unexplored potential of the dimensions of semiosis for discourse studies. The proposed argumentation refers to the process by which semiosic theoretical principles were selected andrefined into a model of discourse analysis. The propounded methodology is exemplified by the genre of epitaphsand provides the platform for examining interactions among code, informational and cultural componentsof semiotic entity.RésuméSupporting Eco's attempt to make semiotics a scientific discipline the author suggests thatthe interpretant of sign should be the basis for the differentiation between three dimensions of semiosis. The latter is defined as the action of signs that organizes the very structure of the interpretation process. It is propounded that three types of interpretant – primary, notional and cultural – are responsiblefor the existence of three dimensions of semiosis: code, informational and cultural. Discourseis considered to be a sign and it is suggested that its interpretation is a complex semiosis-basedprocedure involving three levels of decoding: perceptive, referential and evaluative. Thus, discoursecan be decoded within: a) the enabling and justifying code; b) the knowledge which we have with regardto objects; c) the social-cultural realm. Scholars-interpreters can apply three approaches to describean explain discourse as a category of communication. The first deals with signification systems thatare exploited in order to physically produce components of discourse and is termed codosemiosicapproach. The second – with judgements on discourse intermediary agency within the semiotic universewhich allow us to grasp the reference to the processes of cognition and knowledge patterns. This oneis suggested to be called infosemiosic approach. And finally, sociosemiosic approach can be identifiedwith the study of how discourse communicates something graspable within a particular social andcultural community with all implications concerning identity. The case-study provides the description of the semiosic analysis of a tombstone as a multimodaldiscoursive sign in the space of culture which contains epitaphs as a separate genre of funeral discourse. The potential of three approaches for the tombstone interpretation is considered and three dimensionsof its semiosis are discussed. It is suggested that codo-, info-, and sociosemiosic approaches elaboratedin the article may provide a new tool for discourse studies.

Abstract:
The paper is devoted to the problem of the linguistic grounds of the semiotic model of history, according to which history is described as a communication process circulating within a society. An analogy of principle between language and culture is the theoretical premise of that semiotic approach. Proceeding on this assumption semiotics (B. Uspensky’s case for instance) regards historical process as the process of text outcome and reading, while at the same time control over communication is provided through the cultural code or in other words — through the grammar of history. But the description of history as just the functioning of a single and unified grammatical code doesn’t make it possible to explain the appearance of new meanings or history par excellence. J. Lotman interpreted the rhetorical mechanism of text outcome as the working of two (at a minimum) interplaying semiotic systems. It is the principle of its working that he takes as a basis of his semiotic version of cultural diachrony. And at the very point semiotics finds itself in front of the choice: either to stop at the decomposition the rhetorical machine on separate cultural codes and at the description their separate grammars, or to conceptualize a historical event as un-grammatism, grammatical error, “wrong text”. The analytical way leads to an extremely reduced theoretical construction; the synthetic way undermines status of the semiotic model of history as a positivistic scientific project.

Abstract:
Non-verbal communication is a very important aspect of communication which plays a very crucial role in interpersonal relationship. Its role in the accentuation of verbal communication cannot be overemphasized. Existing literature has not given enough attention to side code as a form of non-verbal communication in the Yorùbá novel. This study fills the gap as it examines side codes, the contexts in which they occur in Yoruba novels with a view to establishing its communicative value. The study adopts semiotic theories of Saussure and Charles Sanders Peirce. Four Yorùbá novels: Ìrìnkèrindò Nínú Igbó Elégbèje and Ògbójú Ọdẹ Nínú Igbó Irúnmo̩lẹ̀. By D.O. Fagunwa, Ojú rí́́́ by Kola Oni and Ṣaworoidẹ by Akinwumi Isola were purposively selected because they have elements of side code and were subjected to semiotic and textual analyses. Side code helps in cultural determinism in the codification of disaster, chaos, lopsidedness, disappointment, success, identification of prince and complementarity.

Abstract:
This study aims to furnish a semiotic reading of Sydney's Chinatown by analysing the environmental meanings codified in that particular context. The basic unit of analysis is the shop sign. Some features underlying sign formations in Sydney's Chinatown are identified and the communication process involved in its organisation of meanings and space is explored. The thesis is organised into three parts. The first part gives an introduction to the background of study and examines theories on architectural semiotics and its relation to visual communication. It consists of three chapters. Chapter 1 defines the scope of the study and outlines the objectives and goals of research. Chapter 2 focuses on two related fields of architectural semiotics, viz. semiotics of objects and semiotics of space. Evaluation of semiotic approaches and behavioural science approaches to the study of objects and space is made. Some of the theories discussed are applied to give a profile of shop signs from a visual semiotic perspective. In Chapter 3 a description of the methods of research and an outline of the analytical framework of this study are given. The two chapters of Part Two provide some background information on various conceptions of "Chinatown". Chapter 4 discusses the development features of Chinatowns in North America, which reveal that there are divergent perceptions of Chinatowns. Chapter 5 describes the development of Sydney's Chinatown and underlines some of its distinctive features. In Part Three the results of the study are presented. Chapter 6 focuses on the codification of meanings realised in Sydney's Chinatown. Chapter 7 is concerned with elements of sign formations and examines the communicative functions of shop signs in the Chinatown context. The analyses made in these chapters are intended to identify some features of sign formations in Sydney's Chinatown within an architectonic system. The thesis concludes with a summary of the study and a discussion of the applicability of architectural semiotic theories. It is suggested that further study can be pursued in the direction that contributes to an understanding of architectonic systems and social communication.

The present study aims at amplifying the debate upon the creativity in advertising, more specifically the kind of creativity recognized in advertisements (not the proposed methods or techniques in order for an ad to become creative, an ordinary issue in advertising manuals). The detection of creativity in advertisements is usually accompanied by words such as ‘original’, ‘astonishing’, ‘intelligent’, ‘outstanding’. The study investigates the phenomenon of creativity in advertising under empirical bases. That is, the aesthetic as proposed by the semiotics serves as the framework for analyzing the data. According to this viewpoint, every aesthetic message conveys mechanisms that transgress the code. The code can be read as imbrications of norms that enable communicative processes to take place. By the exam of this concept (code) will be unrolled elements that will go to hint and to describe some generating mechanisms of creativity in ads

Abstract:
This dissertation is comprised of three teacher-researcher studies carried out with the intention of showing teachers how to move beyond the monolingual paradigm to build upon linguistic and cultural diversity in their everyday practice. The monolingual paradigm is linked to ideologies regarding proficiency in English as the principle means of academic success and citizenship. These studies challenge this traditional way of viewing education by treating learning "as an emerging property of whole persons' legitimate peripheral participation in communities of practice" (Lave, 1991, p. 63), whether these are interest-based communities of practice beyond the classroom or bilingual communities of practice within the classroom. In order to recognize and explain this learning and inform teaching practices, I adopt a social semiotic approach in order to explore how meaning is constructed through language, and also through social interactions with all modern aspects of society, including gesture, image, performance, and music (Kress, 2012; van Leeuwen, 2005). I explore how these interactions allow youth to create diverse identities, beyond immigrant, refugee, limited English proficient, learner, and "other", in three educational arenas: 1) Outside of the classroom in interest-based communities of practice at school, 2) in a secondary dual-language content classroom, and 3) online in an educational transnational telecollaboration project. In all three studies I triangulate quantitative data of student participation and academic achievement with qualitative participant narratives and teacher-researcher observations. What results is insight into the impact of creating multimodal trajectories for youth to perform identities and knowledge as language users in schools, where historically messages of youth's social identities are ascribed in much more constricting ways (Harklau, 2003). Viewing these youth as language users, rather than learners, sends a message to both educators and youth that in education, identity formation trumps skills development, and this can lead to higher expectations, more engaging learning, and opportunities for youth to question race-language educational legacies (Malsbary, 2014; Wenger, 1998).

Desogus, Paolo. "Le cose e i segni : per una semiotica dello stile indiretto libero nell'opera letteraria e cinematografica di Pier Paolo Pasolini." Thesis, Paris 4, 2015. http://www.theses.fr/2015PA040059.

Abstract:
This doctoral thesis studies the free indirect style in Pasolini's works through a double path of research. On one hand it takes into account his literary and cinematic production; on the other it studies the linguistic and semiotic principles on which its free indirect style hinges. This double path has been crossed in the light of four notions that Pasolini developed in his theoretical essays along his artisticactivity. The first one is the “regression”, elaborated in the 40s in order to describe the usage of the Friulian dialect of his early poems. The second one is the “sentimental connection”, which Pasolini discovered in Gramsci's Prison Notebooks and he employed to analyse the relationship between intellectuals and subaltern classes. The third one concerns the free indirect discourse used in Pasolini's Roman novels of the 50s and studied from a linguistic and semiotic point of view in some essays. The last one is the free indirect subjective theorised in the 60s to describe the cinematic adaptation of the free indirect style.Regression, sentimental connection, free indirect discourse and free indirect subjective are the most important notions of Pasolini's free indirect style. They show how the author established itslinguistic, political and sentimental relationship with the subalterns that populates his literary works aswell as his movies

Selected types of religious identity: normative, marginalized, and folkloristically, and determined what type of discourse most pragmatically strongly influences the formation of a type of Orthodox identity. The authors come to the conclusion about the existence in the Russian Federation "rural" and "urban" Orthodox discourses. The first leads to the development of social strain in the area of religious identity and is the base of the formation polarisierung religious identity. The second sets the normative Orthodox identity, avoiding archaism and development of the centaur-ideas. This study was conducted in part supported by RFBR, research project No. 18-011-00164 on "Discursive study of religious identity." &#x0D; Designed for a wide range of sociologists, philologists, cultural studies and religious studies, as well as for a wide circle of readers interested in questions of religion.

Abstract:

Abstract:
Abstract Developed from Ph.D. research which aims to investigate ways in which Saudi Airlines (SAUDIA) advertising portrays females within the evolving landscape of social and economic change in Saudi Arabia, this paper looks to explore ways in which advertising images reflect the transformative ambitions and potential that are at the heart of Vision 2030. With a focus on the strategic objectives of economic and social sustainability through the empowerment of women and increasing their participation in the labour market, which aligns with broader global targets for gender equality as part of the UN’s Sustainable Development Goals. The paper makes use of qualitative content and semiotic analyses to identify ways in which SAUDIA advertising has adjusted or developed creative methods for visualising females in diverse contexts, and performing varied roles. Developing a methodological approach influenced by scholars of gender representation and social semiotics such as Goffman and Kress and Van Leeuwen, and integrating Saudi cultural perspectives (e.g. the dress code for women). The paper will discuss two of the key findings from the research and explore their relation to the goals of Saudi Vision 2030. Within the sample of research results, there is an increase in images which can be considered motivational and which show women in non-traditional roles. Secondly, there is a shift in how gender relationships have been represented as being balanced (in a variety of ways) and a tendency to communicate notions of equality. Acknowledging that Saudi Vision 2030 remains an ongoing project, the paper suggests ways in which modes of visual representation can employ meanings in contemporary advertising which capture and communicate social change.

Abstract:
The wide variety of the components of signs stems from verbal communication to visual gestures, ciphers, images, music, and Morse code. Barthes’ Semiotic Theory restructured the theory of analyzing signs and allowed for a new understanding and interpretation of signs through seeing diverse cultures and societies. Saussure’s definition of the sign as a combination of signifier and signified led Barthes to further elucidate sign as connotative (cultural) and denotative (literal) processes. Semiotics can be applied to all aspects of life, as meaning is produced not in isolation but in totality, establishing multiple connotations and denotations. In the article “The World of Wrestling” published in Mythologies (1957), Barthes focused on images portrayed by the wrestler resulting in understanding of the wrestler’s image and the image of spectator. In Morse code, gestures can make any sport a spectacle of suffering, defeat and justice, representation of morality, symbols, anger, smile, passion etc., from which derive denotative and connotative meanings. Similarly, Thomas Sebeok identifies sign as one of six factors in communication, and which makes up the rich domain of semiotic research. These are message, source, destination, channel, code, and context. The present paper will focus on a dialogic relation between semiotics and sports, thus making it a text that reproduces meaning and represents certain groups. It focuses on various aspects of semiotics and their relation to sports. The paper also contemplates the versions and meanings of signs in sports that establish sport as an act of representation.

Abstract:
Text in the science of the beginning of the XXI century is considered the transmission of not only verbal, but also non-verbal code of communication, actualizing the cognitive-discursive approach. Within the framework of this approach, the advertising text, like any other type of text, can be studied from the point of view of proxemics and kinesics. Isolating the means of data transmission of nonverbal codes representing space and movement, the theory of the use of proxemas and kinemas as direct components of the linguosemiotic code in the texts of promotional discourse is being developed. In this paper the functioning of the above lexemes is analyzed from the standpoint of broadcasting the linguosemiotic code through promotional videos of banking services that reveal the world-modeling potential of commercial advertising. Thus, among the speech techniques of transmitting proximal markers, appellatives indicating distance and pointing to other people, metaphorical representations, occasionalisms and rhetorical questions are highlighted. Non-speech techniques, in turn, are vertical movements and zooming the camera. Kinemas are transmitted using tokens indicating the ease of use of banking services. The obtained research results allow us to conclude that proxemas are used in order to save time, since they allow to verbally convey the space around the main character of the commercial through a single phrase or sentence. Kinemas together with proximal markers constitute a multimodal world-modeling code and are responsible for indicating the ease of use of banking services.

Abstract:
A thing made by man is a kind of coded message about him, the group which he lives in, and a thesis expression of their views on the world. According to the fair remark of Lotman, any such message is reasonable to perceive as superlingual organization (Lotman, 2004). It makes the reading of these messages a complicated process. We face texts that are not based on linguistic principles. If the archaeologist-interpreter expands the methodological horizon of the analysis to the level of semiot-ics, the objects-texts can demonstrate their linguistic specific. This is especially felt when working with paleo-ornaments. The corpus of sources characterizing the Chernoozersky ornamental tradition of the Paleolithic finale in the South of Western Siberia was formed in 19701972 (Gening, Petrin, 1985 Petrin, 1986). Attention to them declined significantly after the first presentations and further to the mid-80s. Much later attempts were made to semantic interpretation of the Chernoozersky dagger ornament in the key of paleocalendaristics (Shmidt, 2004 2005). The work in this direction had to be stopped due to the awareness of the complexity of the code and, despite the existing methods of verification, the lack of confidence in its relevance. At the moment, research is being conducted on the analysis of the collection objects, but in a broader semiotic way, focusing not on their content (which is the purpose of semantics), but on the order and features of the reading of these texts. The preliminary results of the research actualize the arguments about the intercultural (intergroup) dialogues of those distant times, the contextuality of the birth and the genesis of ornaments, to identify their territorial and local variability (Shmidt, 2017a 2017b).
