Örtegren, Fredrika, and Saskia Moquist. "Gravallvarligt eller dödskul? En semiotisk textanalys av fyra svenska true crime-podcastprogram." Thesis, Malmö universitet, Fakulteten för kultur och samhälle (KS), 2019. http://urn.kb.se/resolve?urn=urn:nbn:se:mau:diva-21397.
Full textIn this study, we have examined how male and female content producers of four Swedish true crime podcasts have represented perpetrators, victims and their relatives. The study also examined how producers expressed personal opinions and how they used music. A critical review of these producers is relevant because previous studies have shown they have a great influence on both society and their listeners. The content of the podcasts was studied based on the theories of Sociology of Knowledge, Gender and Representation, using a Semiotic Text Analysis. The results show that male and female content producers represented those involved in the true crime cases in similar ways, but that there are differences in how male and female content producers expressed personal opinions. We have also identified two subcategories in the true crime genre, namely "Talk Show" and "Documentary".

Full textThis study examines how the established sitcom series New Girl portrays women and men normatively or not. The study also examines whether the characters in the series are portrayed as stereotypes that previous research has found. The study consists of the first seven episodes of the first season, all of which had around one million viewers in Sweden. The purpose and aim of this study is to investigate whether the sitcom-series New Girls characters contributes to current gender norms or if the series is norm breaking. In this way, our study contributes to the relatively unexplored gender research as we get knowledge of hoe gender is represtended in the media. As a method, we apply a qualitative text analysis and the study has its theoretical foundation in semiotics. We use the semiotic concepts denotation and connotation as tools when analyzing the characters. The analysis consisted of a scheme to more easily identify the stereotype of the characters. The analysis scheme consisted of clothing/appearance, pronunciation/appeal, occupation and characteristics/feelings.The result of the study shows that New Girl both strengthens the current gender norms and breaks them. The stereotypes that was expressed in the series were “machoman”, “yuppie”, “career woman” and “bourgeois”.

Full textThe aim of the study was to increase understanding of how masculinities and femininities exhibit within a group of men. This was done in the hashtag #pappaledig on the social network Instagram. Variations and patterns were examined in relation to gender stereotyped norms. A semiotic image- and text analysis was used to answer the study's purpose and questions. The terms masculinities and femininities were used as an integrated analysis unit for the purpose of departing from sex dichotomy. The main results of the study showed that the majority of men's images could be interpreted masculine while the texts showed a more feminine or mixed character. In relation to Connell's theory of hegemonic masculinity, the hegemonic ideals appear to be reproduced in the tougher and less expressive images while a softer and more emotional character could be seen in the captions. The more disposal character of the texts could be related to modern paternity.

Thesis, Jönköping University, HLK, Medie- och kommunikationsvetenskap, 2020. http://urn.kb.se/resolve?urn=urn:nbn:se:hj:diva-51919.
Full textThe study examines how the teen series 13 Reasons Why portrays its characters through representation of gender, sexual orientation and ethnicity. The selection consists of the series’ fourth season and eleven characters are analyzed. The aim of the study is to contribute with knowledge of how a popular teen series reinforces or goes against prevailing stereotypes about gender, sexual orientation and ethnicity. The theoretical framework consists of feminist theory, intersectionality, gender theory, representation, stereotypes and counter-stereotypes. The method is a semiotic text analysis and to analyze the result, denotation and connotation has been used with support from the analytical tools icon, index and symbol. By looking at variables such as scene, appearance, behavior, language/speech, sound and body language, conclusions about the series representations have been drawn. The results of the study show that the series 13 Reasons Why represent women as strong and independent, but that women are still underrepresented in tv-series. Men are portrayed as both stereotypically manly but also as counter-stereotypical through the portrayal of more sensitive men. The series shows a broad representation of different ethnicities with both stereotypical and counter-stereotypical representations. The presentation of sexual orientation shows new perspectives and although some stereotypical representations occur, the series has opened new avenues for representation of bisexuality and homosexuality.

Full textTo be noticed among today's large supply of video clips on Youtube, the creators are using both headline and thumbnails that contain clickbaits. The concept means that the headline and thumbnails are of a ostentatious character, they seldom contain information about the video you are about to watch. The clickbaits only purpose is to entice the watcher to click on videos. Therefore the purpose of this study is to raise awareness of how clickbaits are built up on Youtube. The study is built upon a qualitative critical text analysis. We have studied one of Sweden's largest Youtube-channels, where 22 of the channels most popular clips from 2017 have been studied through the rhetoric and semiotic. We want to make visible on which attributes the clickbaits are built upon. Subsequently has 4 randomly picked videoclips been analysed through the relevance theory to examine how relevant the clickbaits are for the actual content of the video. The studies result show that sexual content, strong emotions, goodwill and personality are common traits within clickbaits on Youtube, where the personal brand show to be of great meaning. The result also show that the headlines and thumbnails are not relevant to the content of the video. The study indicates that the use clickbaits benefits the creator because it gives them more views on their video. From the viewers point of view are they not beneficial, because the information that we receive from the clickbait is not the most relevant when you compare it to the actual content of the video.

Full textThe aim of this paper was to examine how women are portrayed in the Swedish metal magazines Close-Up Magazine and Sweden Rock Magazine from a gender theoretical and social constructivist perspective. Since the majority of the gender related media research have focused on pictures in fashion and advertising, there is a lack of awareness regarding how women are portrayed in other genres. This study’s objective was to examine pictures in these magazines in order to identify female stereotypes and compare them to established stereotypes from previous studies. In total 28 pictures from 15 magazines, that were published in 2013, were analyzed based on the understanding of feminist theory and Goffman’s theory of gender display. Three distinctive female stereotypes appeared in the results. These were titled The tough, The compassionate and The objectified. The last two are well known in the media research field while The tough woman, who show signs of aggression, contempt and superiority, has not appeared in previous studies. This new stereotype's view of the observer, which has not been defined in previous studies, we decided to call The glare. The results show a greater variety of stereotypes than what has been discussed in prior media related research. They also indicate that there is no uniform female stereotype and that they vary depending on genre and cultural context.

""We believe in healthy, no matter what body shape you have" : En kvalitativ textanalys av kvinnoframställningen på bikiniföretagets Elsa and Rose Swimwears Instagram." Full textThe purpose of the study is to, through semiotic analysis and gender theory, investigate in which way the body-positive bikini company Elsa and Rose Swimwear is representing women in their Instagram marketing. Since earlier research on female representation in advertising is largely focused on body size and attractiveness, we have in this study chosen to include analysis tools such as pose, gaze, as well as ethnicity and skin. This will contribute to new knowledge on female representation in commercials and on social media. By studying seven images, all posted in 2018, on Elsa and Rose Swimwear's Instagram account, we have investigated how women are represented as well as whether and how this representation differs from the normative female image usually seen in media. The result of the study shows that none of the seven images included in the analysis display "the perfect woman" that is usually seen in media and advertising. None of the women in the pictures possess all the normative attributes, such as both an extremely thin body and perfect skin. We find that the main purpose of the images is not to for the company to market their products with normative women's bodies, but rather market their products while spreading a message saying that all bodies are worth being seen in media, regardless of size, skin tone and appearance. Finally, the women in the pictures communicate self-confidence and control through their gazes and poses, and therefore demonstrating their consciousness of the observer. The result of the study shows that the body-positive bikini company Elsa and Rose Swimwear's main representation of women differs from the traditional and normative female image.

Full textThe silent years: ecofeminism in Swedish printed press 1995-2016 Ecofeminism figures in both political and philosophical contexts and is an ideology that combines feminism with environmental policy. It builds its ideology to counteract a patriarchal oppression against both women and nature, saying that this oppression stems from a historical perception of the woman standing closer to nature. The self-elevation of the white man to God during the industrialism era used this historical image in the justification to exercise power towards both women and nature, which is said to be ongoing to the greatest extent today. By considering how Swedish printed press depict ecofeminism between the years 1995-2016, this paper has been designed to determine if this relationship of power remains and define how it is expressed. The essay also investigates whether a discourse on ecofeminism is mediated in Swedish press. Central Issues: How is ecofeminism produced in Swedish printed press between 1995 and 2016? What power structures appear around ecofeminism and who get their voices heard? Why was nothing written about ecofeminism for 5 of the 11 investigated years? Methods: To find this out, this essay has used triangulation as an overarching method containing quantitative analysis, content analysis and analysis of visual communication. Conclusions: This essay indicate that the repression remains and becomes evident in the relationship between Swedish press and ecofeminism. Ecofeminism is expressed as difficult for the public and is often confused with specificity feminism in what appears to be a strategic goal of repression by means of disinformation.

Full textThis study seeks to find answers to whom, in terms of which gender group, is given space on the QX magazine cover. Primarily with focus on text elements, secondarily the visual aspects. The study is created in the traces of gender researcher Yvonne Hirdman's theories concerning the male dominance that is generally found in society, and which gives women a lower social status. Hirdman points out that this inequality is being created and recreated, as well as Embretsén and Palmberg's study "A Monochrome Rainbow" presents an underrepresentation of women in QX magazine. The research material consists of 36 covers from the QX magazine, published between 2015 and 2017. The study is based on systemic-functional linguistics, discourse analysis and a multimodal analysis to cover both the ideational meanings of the texts as well as how messages are presented visually. The result shows an even frequency of gender distribution, but an uneven design in which QX turns on stereotypes of female and male, which is based on a ruling male point of view.
