Abstract:
ABSTRACTOne of the most significant trends in twentieth century America is the constant expansion of the senior citizen population (age 65 and over) – in both absolute and relative terms. While social scientists have developed a huge literature on America's older population, they have largely ignored its vast political implications. This topic is particularly timely inasmuch as senior citizen George Bush has replaced senior citizen Ronald Reagan in the Presidency, two-thirds of the Supreme Court justices are past age 65, and as usual many of the most powerful members of Congress are senior citizens. This article turns attention to the nation's eight senior citizen Vice Presidents, focusing primarily on explanations for their nomination. It also examines trends in the incidence of senior citizen Vice Presidents. Although the nation has had such Vice Presidents during each third of its history (the first one inaugurated in 1805, the most recent one in 1974), they have served with relatively greater frequency since the 1920s. Probable factors underlying this trend include continually increasing life expectancy, the growth in the senior citizen segment of the nation's population and its political mobilisation, and some decline in ageism.

Abstract:
This paper proposes a safety confirmation system consisting of a mat sensor and a power line communication device that can be installed in small-sized senior citizen welfare facilities without a nurse call and in ordinary households. The proposed system detects when a senior citizen attempts to get out of bed or leave a room, sending an alarm to the control room or a caregiver in another room. The power line communication enables such housing facilities to set up safety confirmation easily and inexpensively. The usefulness of this system has been verified by field examination in the senior citizen welfare facility.

Abstract:
Mobile apps are designed and specifically developed for a specific purpose. They are widely used nowadays as they benefit many users of different age groups, both the old and young. Although various apps caters to the different needs of the senior citizen users are available, there is a lack in understanding of how usability features of these apps influence the acceptance among the senior citizens. Though many of the existing studies proposed several features that may be beneficial to older users, it is unclear how these features promote the acceptance of mobile apps for older users in countries like Malaysia. Aiming to address this inadequacy, the current study investigate the needs, expectations, and usability features of several mobile apps that are relevant for the Malaysian senior citizen people, aged 65 years and above. The usability evaluation of the developed prototype was performed by using the System Usability Scale (SUS). Based on results of the evaluation, it was concluded that the inclusion of an elder-friendly usability feature can increase the acceptance of mobile apps among the senior citizens.

Abstract:
This article examines a series of service delivery reforms that were undertaken at the Hyderabad Metropolitan Water Supply and Sewerage Board in Andhra Pradesh State, southern India. Key to sustained improvements in service delivery performance were three effective accountability relationships, triangulating between citizens, senior managers, and frontline workers. In this dynamic, consistent citizen demand for accountability provided new sources of performance information to senior managers, which they could then use to hold frontline workers to account for responsive service provision. Transparent and accessible citizen-based accountability mechanisms have the potential to contribute to organizational change and sustained improvements in service delivery performance in public sector service providers.

Abstract:
Malaysia is reported to be an “elderly’”country by 2030. Senior citizens are “jewels in experience”, wherefore their welfare rights should be protected under the law or by the public in general. Therefore, this paper discusses the rights of senior citizens to be protected by examining the provisions of the Destitute Persons Act 1977. The study was carried out through library research. Apart from analysing the provisions of the Destitute Persons 1977 Act, reported cases of underprivileged and ill senior citizens in Malaysia were also taken into view. In addition, this article also discusses the role of government agencies in helping senior citizens in need of protection and care, in the form of physical or financial assistance. Finally, this article discusses the actions and recommendations of the government which seeks to draw up an Act specifically aimed at protecting senior citizen welfare rights as a whole.

Abstract:
PurposeThe purpose of this paper is to offer a framework of third-place value offering that explains how specific consumer groups’, senior citizens, customer-to-customer engagement in third places can develop their value experiences.Design/methodology/approachData were collected for two studies from senior citizen clubs in Australia. Study 1 uses focus group (12) and is analysed with QSR NVivo software following content analysis. Study 2 is based on 324 surveys and is analysed with AMOS version 24 software.FindingsStudy 1 identifies eight themes based on 29 main codes to develop a framework on the value offerings of third-place value and its consumer-centric effect on seniors’ loyalty and social capital. The themes under social capital and loyalty contributed to a better understanding of how consumers engage with each other in social clubs and develop their social capital. The results of Study 2 support the conceptualisation of third-place value offering as a reflective model and confirm the model’s nomological validity in relation to seniors’ loyalty and social capital outcomes.Research limitations/implicationsThe only limitation of the paper is that it presents findings based on data collected in a regional place in Australia.Practical implicationsThe findings provide three practical implications for managers to consider in relation to service places: improve consumer patronage through community engagement, improve local business practices via consumer–owner friendship and redesign spatial settings to deliver meaningful consumer experiences.Social implicationsThe present study has three social implications; first, it highlights the significant role of third places in bringing isolated groups of community together for regular interaction and socialisation. It also extends understanding on senior citizen customers and their consumption experiences within third places for value creation. The study also contributes to understanding how senior citizen customers develop loyalty towards third places and enhance their social capital through social engagement in the place.Originality/valueThis paper uses consumption experience to develop the consumer value in third places. It provides a consumer-centric focus to servicescape and incorporates recent works on third places, value, social capital and loyalty.

Abstract:
Students in an undergraduate life-span developmental psychology course either wrote a traditional term paper or conducted a project that required interaction with a mentally alert adult over 65 years of age (senior citizen). Those who chose the project assisted a senior citizen in writing his or her own life story. Along with the life log, students submitted a paper demonstrating how their particular senior citizen experienced and worked through each of the life stages. By assisting their senior citizen to organize memories and interpret decisions that had shaped his or her life, the young adult students experienced those stages that they themselves had not yet lived through. Students evaluated the project positively as a theoretical learning experience and as a personal growth experience.

Abstract:
In a smart city, technologies are designed to assist people in their everyday lives, like in intelligent homes, public transportation, and e-services. However, this can lead to new kind of marginalisation if people do not fit into the idea of smart citizen. In this article, I consider how the smart city ideology of Oulu in northern Finland becomes lived in the everyday practices of senior citizens; and how they sense themselves as “smart citizens.” Through generating ethnographic composition of ICT-biography and walk-along interviews, and series of workshops with seniors, city officials and researchers; and thinking this process as collaborative knowledge-making, the configuration of ageing in a smart city has emerged. In this configuration, the city is understood as an assemblage with dynamics of temporalities, structures, communities and individuals; and as part of global power-geometry. Though the seniors support the smart city ideology as regional strategy, they want to make a voluntary decision to become a smart citizen. Current smart city is made for and by technology enthusiasts, and it often excludes other citizens. To become a smart community the city must include variety of citizens in the making of their city. Many seniors are willing to take up this challenge.

The case pertains to the decision regarding business model to be decided by the developer of a proposed senior citizen homes. Due to a number of reasons, enumerated in the study, the elderly people prefer to live in community living projects. The protagonist Mr Pankaj Pawa, MD, Pawa Group, wants a scalable Old Age Home (OAH) concept, which can be replicated across India. Accordingly, he has identified upper-middle-class senior citizens as the potential segment. As per his surveys, this segment is neglected till date. The project will need to be planned as a community project, where the residents become part of the community by sharing common resources. The developer’s main concern is selecting the best business model, which allows him to expand. Simultaneously, the project should not lead to his capital blockage as the real estate market has faced liquidity crisis. Furthermore, he needs to be convinced that the senior citizens are a financially viable customer segment, and an exclusive project for them will be self-sustaining in the long term.

Abstract:
This qualitative case study explores writing and writing motivations of senior citizens age 65-93 who had entered a public library Writing Challenge. The research questions focused on how and why writing was important to this group as well as what patterns and themes emerged in their work. Data from questionnaires offered that the social aspect of writing appeared to be the strongest motivating factor for participation. Numerous individual reasons for writing were listed, and these, as well as the unique ideas presented in excerpts from the work itself, created a resonant picture of writing in participants’ lives. The resulting anthology contained a predominance of non-fiction, including life writing components within fictive pieces, utilizing the expressive function. Key themes included identity, olden days, progress, humour, nature, religion, and the love of family. Implications involve the importance of community writing events for writers who may not have other means of developing individual writing networks. Further research is recommended related to seniors and literacy to add to what is currently a limited academic viewpoint regarding this population.

Abstract:
Republic Act (RA) 9994, otherwise known as the Expanded Senior Citizen Act of 2010, was enacted into law to provide more benefits to the elderly and deliver full support to their well-being (Inabangan et al., 2019). The benefits are essential as most of them no longer hold jobs, and financial stability can be challenging if not fatal. The current laws and policy provisions on food and medicine discount and the granting of a social pension to underprivileged senior citizens are only palliatives at best. However, they stretch the limited incomes of these individuals and their supporting families who live below the poverty level. The purpose of the study is to assess the level of awareness and extent of availment on the benefits under RA 9994 of senior citizens in a highly urbanized city of Negros Occidental as well as the relationship between awareness and availment. Likewise, explore the challenges encountered by senior citizens in availing their benefits under RA 9994.

Abstract:
This review paper looked at some of the most relevant material on senior citizens' issues. The study aimed to use secondary data analysis to determine the most pressing needs of senior citizens. The essay examined their current situation, problems, and needs. Nepal's elderly population is growing every year. They have not received adequate care from the government. The private sector made a considerable contribution to this endeavor. Both the government and the private sector have made efforts in this regard. They are currently battling to meet their basic requirements. Senior citizens not receiving adequate food and has disability mental illnesses are two of the several misfortunes listed in the research papers, both of which are public health concerns. They are in dire need of proper nutrition as well as mental health promotion. That is an area where both the government and the private sector can focus. COVID-19 has the highest Case Fatality Rate among elderly adults, and Nepalese senior citizens have a high mortality rate. The high mortality and fatality rates of COVID among the elderly have prompted policymakers to focus on senior citizens' health and living conditions. There are three tiers of government in Nepal. If they understand the issue, they will develop strategies and services to aid senior citizens. In this changing environment, the public and private sectors at various levels must enhance cooperation to improve the dreadful situation of senior citizens. Also, the importance of family in senior citizen care has grown in recent years.

Abstract:
Abstract. In this work, we present a framework supported by mobile and web apps and able to propose personalized pedestrian routes that match user mobility profile considering mobility impediments factors. We explain how these later have been defined using a pedestrian-centric approach based on travel experiences as perceived in the field by senior citizens. Through workshops, six main factors that may influence pedestrian route choices were revealed: passability, obstacle in path, surface problem, security, sidewalk width, slope. These categories were used to build digital tools and guide a citizen participatory approach to collect geolocated points of obstacle documented with walkability information (picture, category, impact score, free comment). We also involved citizens to evaluate these information and especially senior referents for validation. Finally we present how we connect these points of obstacle with a pedestrian network based on OpenStreetMap to configure a routing cost function. The framework has been partially deployed in 2020 with limited people due to the pandemic. Nonetheless, we share lessons learned from interaction with citizens in the design of such a framework whose underlying workflow is reproducible. We plan to further assess its relevance and sustainability in the future.

Abstract:
Abstract: The project titled “Handicap Pickup And Drop System” is a ramp travelling mechanism which can be used in railway station, metros, airports, and on other transportation system where there is no proper facility for the handicap and senior citizen on the platforms of the transportation system. The main elements of the project are sensors, micro – controller, conveyer belt, DC motor. Micro controller can be said as the heart of the mechanism as it controllers all the various functions and programs of the mechanism. The project deals with the automation of process for the handicap and senior citizen in their transportation system. This system gives a fast and effortless operation for the individual. The controller for this system is supplied by a single phase AC supply. The program defines the kind of task to be performed on the system corresponding to the inputs. This control program is feed into using a program device such as PC. Sensors are used to sense the presence of the individuals position. The signal from the sensor is as input to the controller. The controller gives the control signal to the actuators in the conveyer to move the chair to the appropriate position. The whole process can be done in a single operation and can be stopped after the process is completed. Thus this system gives a faster and reliable control to reduce the effort and ease the travelling experience for the handicap or the senior citizen. In the current scenario if a handicap or the senior citizen wants to go the train, it was a nightmare because first he/ she has to take the ticket from the ticket counter and then go to the appropriate compartment by himself or with the help of someone. The micro-controller controls the complete working of the system. It is common to use microcontrollers to make simple logical control decision.

Abstract:
The study aims to describe the perception of seniors on the exercise of citizenship in the light of the thought of Maurice Merleau-Ponty, based on the notion of the sexed body and the other's body. Discloses was from the participation of 13 elderly, members of acquaintance groups in the city of Jequié/BA, which produced experiential descriptions in three focus group meetings, during the month of April in 2012. Such descriptions were submitted to ambiguity analytics, a technique that consists in suspending the theories and notice the ambiguities inherent in them. From this analysis, two categories have emerged: being an elderly citizen in the expression of the sexed body and being an elderly citizen in the expression of the other's body. The reflections have shown that the inclusion of elderly women in acquaintance groups and their desire to exercise citizenship occur, primarily, by the need to be accepted in society and recognized as subjects of law.
