Abstract:
The large demand for residences, which today prevails in Stockholm, is something many people know of. Often there is talk of a housing bubble and the price per square meter in the region continues to increase. Despite this, the migratory propensity in Sweden decreased since 2007, while a large majority of countries in Europe have had an increased tendency for their inhabitants to move and is associated with the economic recovery. A well-functioning moving tendency has a great impact on a country's prosperity and development, and it is urgent to try to understand what it is that gets the Swedes to move from their current homes. An average Swedish moves that most during the age 20-35 years, and then the frequency decreases until retirement. Since a large proportion of pensioners are house owners, it is important to understand what it is that makes them move. An increasing of the frequency of relocation is preferred for the country, both from an economics- and social perspective as this gives opportunities for new families to move. This results that the country gets a better moving tendency. The purpose of this study is to get a better understanding of how people in Täby reason about moving. The people living in Täby that have been picked to participate in this study was born before 1970 and lives, or previously lived, in a villa. Based on a survey, the executor of this study will figure out what the house owners’ preferences and requirements are to move from houses to condominium. This study's purpose is for the government and industrials firm in the construction business to meet the house owners’ conditions and needs to make them feel secure enough to move. The result of this study’s survey suggests that there are major significant differences between the group of homeowners and residents of the condominium in the factor moving expenses. This means that the moving costs is a key factor for homeowners to move. The house owners who haven’t moved yet considers the moving costs to be a lot higher than those who moved and now lives in condominium. A potential push factor that can be constructed by the industrial firms in the construction business is helping the homeowners with the move. This service could be financed by being part of the sales price and this would increase the moving tendency in the circle of clients they want to reach out to.

Rajan, Mrunalini. "Housing for Sikh seniors." Thesis, University of British Columbia, 1988. http://hdl.handle.net/2429/28533.

Abstract:
Housing needs for the elderly are a function of several processes accompanying aging. In the case of visible, immigrant seniors, additional factors such as ethnic origin and their length of stay in Canada come into play. Sikhs are a predominant and one of the fastest growing sectors in the Canadian multicultural mosaic. This visible ethnic group has a long history of immigration to British Columbia. Canadian immigration policies have shaped the character (age-sex distribution, occupation, education, geographic location) of the Sikh community over the period of their immigration history. Immigration trends, acculturation of the Canadian-born generation, changing family patterns and the efforts of the community to maintain its culture, religion and language, all shape the housing needs of Sikh seniors in the Canadian context. At present, the demographic profile of Canadian Sikhs reveals that the majority of them are in the 20-50 age group. This profile combined with the influx of new immigrants including aged parents and other relatives, indicates an imminent increase in the number of Sikh elderly in Canada. This study traces the assimilation of this community in Vancouver, and examines the suitability of housing options available to the mainstream Canadian elderly, for the Sikh elderly. A particular example considered for the purpose of this thesis is the small-scale congregate housing (Abbeyfield) alternative. Information from literature and a clustered survey of elderly Sikhs in Vancouver city suggest the emerging need for an alternative to their traditional housing arrangements. Prospective residents for alternative housing are likely to be elderly, widowed Sikh males. For them, the Abbeyfield option due to its domestic scale and adaptability, has been viewed as a viable solution.

Abstract:
The assignment from Slottsbro AB was to construct an outdoor activity in modular form, without electronics, mechanics or weights as resistance, targeting seniors. To gain better understanding of what kind of activities seniors need and what problem areas they have, interviews were made with physiotherapists’, researchers and training instructors. Seniors were interviewed and answered questionnaires and observations of various kinds were made to gain further knowledge and inspiration. A literature study was made to gain knowledge of seniors’ health and physiology, fitness and movement exercises and fall prevention. Exercise is a great way for preventing falls, especially functional training, meaning training to manage everyday life. It is particularly balance, leg strength, explosive arm strength and mobility that need to be trained. During the construction phase sketches of various suggestions on equipment or motion exercises were made and were consulted with Slottsbro AB. CAD-models were constructed based on the previous decisions. From these CAD-models prototypes at scale of 1:10 were made in the University workshop. The models were later used to take product pictures outdoors, in order to give an idea of how a full-scale design would look like. Scale models were also used in the compulsory thesis exhibition. To show how the park should be used a stop film was made. It was meant as an illustrative element during the exhibition and final presentation. The modules that were developed were:  A bench with three different seat heights  A balance board  A staircase combined with an inclined plane  Bars in different heights to stand by and do different types of exercises,  Rings attach to rubber bands with different resistance  Windlass, curved pipe and spinning wheels The activity park was named Palaestra which means “training” in Latin.

Abstract:
The golden generation have a wealth of experience and knowledge from throughout their lifetimes that younger generations wish to retain. In our technology filled world an obvious means of collecting this information is electronically. Digital library col- lections are increasingly used by libraries and large institutions to record their large amounts of information but they can also be used for personal collections. Seniors are often willing and keen to impart their years of experience upon people of the younger generation but time is not always on their side as they grow older. Throughout a lifetime a person could collect large amounts of papers, diaries, pho- tos and media but the time it takes to organise these documents can be long and exhausting and the person's health is not always at its best in old age. Greenstone is a suite of software for creating digital libraries, which are organised collections of documents. Greenstone has the ability to distribute collections either using a server or CD-ROM, and provides advanced searching and organization tools. While Greenstone is a versatile and useful tool in creating digital collections, its in- terface is not designed for senior users. Seniors are commonly perceived to have more physical and mental disadvantages as they get older. These disadvantages can dramatically affect how usable seniors find a piece of software. The aim of this thesis is to investigate how usable the current Greenstone interface is for use by seniors and to re-design the interface so that Greenstone may be more easily used by senior users. This thesis focuses upon what types of documents and descriptive data seniors would like to include in a collection about their life. This is to ascertain exactly what parts of the interface must be improved when it comes to metadata and classifiers. The results of this investigation also helped in the creation of a customised metadata set for senior users use.

This study was carried out on the Autonomous Region of Madeira and describing the UTIS (Universities for Senior Citizens), understanding the student’s motivations, their expectations and also the changes occurred after their enrolment were its main aims. The qualitative and quantitative method was used for the study case, namely the enquiry methods such as structured interview and questionnaire. On Madeira there are 4 Senior Universities, with an average of 17 disciplines and a total of 551 students, but only 307 actively participate. The study sample, a non-probability convenience sampling, is made up by 82 seniors, 15 males, who attend at least 3 annual activities at the Senior University. According to the data collected by questionnaire, it was possible to prove that the social gathering, the need for learning, acquiring new and more knowledge, keeping and feeling active were the main reasons for the students’ involvement and participation. Thus, the students’ initial expectation was to learn or gain knowledge and come together. Concerning the changes occurred after their personal commitment and participation in the Senior University, all students pointed out the social aspects, the interrelationship, the knowledge and the personal development. The students who look for senior universities show that they are deeply interested in their personal learning, education and growth. These programs are a hobby, a project based on the needs, the motivations, the expectations and characteristics which promote an active ageing.

Grieve, Anna Marguerite. "High school seniors' perceptions of nursing." Thesis, University of British Columbia, 1991. http://hdl.handle.net/2429/29731.

Full text
Abstract:
Declining enrollments in nursing programs, combined with the negative image of nursing as a profession, stimulated the author to investigate the current status of the nursing profession as viewed by a group of senior high school students. Using a questionnaire, subjects were asked to identify those areas they believed nurses to work in, and those job activities nurses performed. As well, they were asked a series of questions related to educational requirements of nurses and whether or not they would consider a nursing career, and, if not, possible reasons for their decision. In the final portion of the questionnaire students responded to statements on occupational image and occupational preference. Findings revealed that students had definite perceptions of nursing. While some of these were accurate, others were not consistent with the nature of the nursing profession today. Results of this study can be used by the nursing profession to plan a suitable advertising campaign with the primary purpose of informing young people about the career opportunities within the nursing profession, as well as dispelling many of the old myths related to the profession. Such efforts will help students perceive of the nursing profession positively. This in turn will encourage more young people to pursue a nursing career and help to alleviate the critical nursing shortage experienced here in North America.

Abstract:

Older adults’ knowledge and perceptions about Ebola have not been previously explored in the literature. A survey, administered during the Ebola outbreak in 2014, was performed to capture East Harlem senior residents’ knowledge about Ebola and identify their major sources of information, their self-reported levels of trust in city officials, and whether or not they would follow officials’ directions. Results using frequency testing showed that senior respondents were not knowledgeable about disease transmission. The major trusted sources of information identified were television and newspapers. Overall, respondents trusted city officials and were very likely to follow city instructions. This study is important because it elucidates the need for better information to be more efficiently disseminated through media during a health emergency.

Sullivan, Kathleen Margaret. "The Experience of Senior Housing for Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual and Transgender Seniors: An Exploratory Study." PDXScholar, 2011. https://pdxscholar.library.pdx.edu/open_access_etds/146.

Full text
Abstract:
By the year 2030, 20% of the U.S. population will be 65 years of age or older. An increase in the demand for supportive health and social services is expected with the aging of the population. Demand for senior housing is expected to grow, too. This study explores what the social environment offers to lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender (LGBT) seniors who relocated to LGBT retirement communities. Previous research asked LGBT seniors who did not live in LGBT senior housing about their housing preferences. The present study, for the first time, asked residents of existing LGBT senior living communities to explain why they chose to live in an LGBT retirement community. Focus groups were conducted at three retirement communities. Thirty-eight residents at the three study sites participated. Seven focus groups were conducted; each was audio recorded and transcribed verbatim. The analysis found common categories across the focus group data that explain the phenomenon of LGBT senior housing. The average age of the participants was 71. Demographic differences were found between generations, with the older participants being more likely to have revealed their sexual orientation late in life, and more likely to have been married and have children. The findings showed that acceptance by other residents of one's sexual orientation and gender identity allows LGBT seniors to feel comfortable in what several residents called their "domestic environment." The questions asked about housing choice and were open ended; respondents chose to focus on the social aspect of their living environments. Acceptance, as opposed to tolerance, was a strong theme. Acceptance by others reduced stress and fostered a feeling of safety and a sense of community. Social networks were strong and expansive, contrary to the theory of socioemotional selectivity theory, which would argue that the total number social relationships diminishes with age. Participants emphasized the social context of their living environment as the reason they chose to live in LGBT senior housing. Participants noted past discrimination, but it was the positive aspects resulting from acceptance that were emphasized as the reason for their choice of LGBT specific retirement housing.

Abstract:
The number of Canadian seniors with 2 or more chronic health conditions living into their late 90s or older has never been greater. As such, concerns have been raised that the Canadian healthcare system will be unable to meet the growing healthcare needs of the aging population. In this project, an Advanced Practice Nursing needs assessment was used to identify the impact that caring for a senior has on caregivers' stress levels, and what resources caregivers need to in order to cope with their role. Guided by Neuman's system model theory and Rogers' diffusion of innovation model, a convenience sampling technique was used to gather a sample of caregivers who provide services to seniors age 65 years and older. A total of 33 individuals were sampled; however, valid data were present for only 25 respondents in the quantitative investigation and 27 respondents in the qualitative investigation. Quantitative data were gathered on demographic variables, a caregiver's overall level of stress, and a caregiver's burden. Qualitative data were gathered on what resources would help a caregiver feel less stressed. Nonparametric statistics were used to analyze the quantitative data, and the qualitative data were subjected to a content analysis. Quantitative results revealed that as the respondents got older, their caregiver burden and stress increased; the data also revealed that more educated respondents had less caregiver burden and less stress. Analysis of the qualitative data found that the caregivers wanted more support, more information on how to be a better caregiver, more respite care, and more help from both the Community Care Access Centers and the government. It is expected that the findings of this project can be used as a basis for planning and allocating services for caregivers.

Krishnamoorthi, Prithviraj. "Gender differences in oral health of seniors." Thesis, Boston University, 2010. https://hdl.handle.net/2144/37815.

Full text
Abstract:
Thesis (MSD) -- Boston University, Henry M. Goldman School of Dental Medicine, 2010 (Department of Health Policy and Health Services Research).
Includes bibliographic references: leaves 73-75.
Objectives: To describe the oral health of Rhode Island Seniors and to evaluate gender differences in oral health. Methods: This is a cross-sectional study of individuals who underwent oral screening at the HeathLink Wellness Health Fair, RI, in June, 2008. Data was collected using a self-administered questionnaire on self-reported general and oral health, and a dental examination for those who attended the HealthLink Wellness Progran’s health fair. Data was coded and entered into Epi-Info version 3.4.1, then analyzed using SAS version 9.1. The clinical oral health outcome variables studied were: number of teeth, edentulousness, root tips, untreated caries, dentures, and DMFT. The self-perceived oral health outcome variables were: difficulty relaxing, avoided going out or feeling nervous or self-conscious, felt pain or distress due to teeth, gums or denture, and overall poor self-perceived oral health. The main predictor variable was gender. Other predictor variables included age, self-reported chronic diseases (diabetes, hypertension, heart disease, and dry mouth), smoking history and current smoking status, self-perceived oral health, number of teeth, dentures, and DMFT. Descriptive statistics, bivariate analyses, and multivariate logistic and linear regression analyses were performed. Results: The study sample consisted of 166 subjects with a mean age of 72.3[plus or minus]7.8 years (range=42-89 years). Descriptive analyses of the study sample’s oral health showed that the subjects had overall good oral health, with 47% having good oral hygiene, 19% had untreated caries, 8% had root tips, 46% had at least one denture (upper or lower, complete or partial), and 12% were completely edentulous. On average, study subjects retained at least half of their natural dentition (mean=16.8[plus or minus]0.8 teeth). The mean DMFT score was 18.5[plus or minus]0.5 teeth. The mean number of teeth with untreated caries was 0.4[plus or minus]0.1 teeth. Multiple logistic regression models and linear regression models were performed after controlling for potential confounders and statistically significant associations were found between the main predictor, gender; and the outcome variables, self-perceived oral health, and clinical oral health. Females were 3.3 times more likely to feel difficulty relaxing due to their teeth, gums or denture (95% CI=1.5-7.6, p=0.002), were 10 times more likely to avoid going out or felt nervous or self-conscious due to their teeth, gums or denture (95%CI=2.1- 48.2, p=0.004), were 5.9 times more likely to have felt pain or distress due to their teeth, gums or denture (95% CI=1.8-19.8, p=0.005), and were 3.2 times more likely to avoid eating some foods due to their teeth gums or denture (95% CI=1.0-10.1, p=0.03). When a new variable was constructed, that reflected an overall score for self-perceived oral health, a multiple linear regression model showed that females had overall poorer self-perceived oral health (p=[less than]0.0001) than males. When clinical oral health outcome variables and gender was analyzed, females were less likely to have decayed teeth (p=0.005), had lower DMFT (p=0.02), and had a greater number of teeth (p=0.03) than males. Conclusion: In this study sample, there is an association between clinical oral health and self-perceived oral health and gender compared to the national data. Also, despite the fact that males had poorer clinical oral health than females, females reported poorer self-perceived oral health than males.

Barrett, Thomas. "Elder Abuse : Agencies' Experiences and Seniors' Relationships." Thesis, Edith Cowan University, Research Online, Perth, Western Australia, 1998. https://ro.ecu.edu.au/theses/234.

Full text
Abstract:
This study examines elder abuse in an Australian context and comprises two parts: agencies' experiences with elder abuse; and seniors and their relationships. The first part sought baseline data on elder abuse as recorded by a range of agencies in New South Wales (NSW) and Western Australia (WA). A mailed questionnaire was sent to a random sample of 400 agencies per State, seeking information for the 1994 calendar year regarding abused elders 65 years of age or older, and resulted in an overall return rate of 57.62%. Data was analysed using SPSS for Windows. The second part of the study was qualitative, exploratory and phenomenological in nature. The objectives were: to increase the knowledge and understanding of elder abuse within an Australian context by examining the experiences and feelings of care givers and care recipients in the transition from independence to dependence for one partner; to identify factors contributing to the abuse of elderly persons in private accommodation; to determine the relevance of a disability-related dependency to the likely occurrence of elder abuse; and to explore the applicability of a range of theories, in particular social exchange theory and the situational model, to caring situations. A purposive, nonrandom sample of nine cases was drawn totalling 12 persons who were interviewed using a semi-structured questionnaire. Four general research questions examined the characteristics of the participants prior to the onset of caring; explored the impact of the change from the pre-caring stage to the caring stage on the respondents; assessed caring demands on the care giver; and sought to determine the impact of continuous care provision on the care giver/care recipient relationship. Seven ancillary research questions addressed more specific aspects of the care giver/care recipient relationship. Qualitative data analysis utilised NUD.IST. The major findings from part 1 of the study revealed 92 (44%) agencies in NSW and 66 (26.2%) in WA had seen cases of elder abuse in 1994. In both States, female elder abuse victims as care recipients, were represented three times more often over a greater range of victims per agency than male counterparts. Psychological, physical, material/financial and sexual forms of abuse, plus neglect, were represented in both States' findings. Psychological abuse was most frequent in NSW, and in WA, neglect. Sexual abuse was reported with least frequency in both States. In each State, victims were represented in a ratio of approximately 1:6 (care giver to care recipients). For care givers, the most common forms of abuse received were physical, psychological and material/financial. No reliable Australian data exists on the incidence and prevalence of elder abuse. These research findings indicated its presence and found similarities with findings in the USA, Canada and the UK for perpetrators and abuse types. Perpetrators of elder abuse included: spouses; sons; sons-in-law; de facto partners; daughters; and daughters-in-law. Spouses were cited most often as perpetrators in both States followed by sons and daughters in NSW and daughters-in-law and sons in WA. Direct agency services for victims were found wanting. Where available, they provided information; counselling; mediation; and referral. Mandatory reporting of elder abuse was supported in both NSW ( 4 7 .1 % ) and WA (44.8%). One-third of the agencies in both States were undecided on the issue and the remainder were opposed. However, many agencies ignored the question, leaving the results inconclusive. The major findings from part 2 of the study revealed eight of nine care givers interviewed to have been in long-term marriages and of having satisfying relationships prior to the onset of the partner's disability. Trauma, loss and grief experiences prior to their partner's disability, for some, exacerbated the demands of caring in later years. The onset of the disability-related dependency whether sudden, or gradual, determined how the care giver coped initially. Regardless of the type of disability, common feelings expressed by care givers included: social isolation; change or loss in communication; a sense of coping alone; lack of external supports; feeling trapped; a loss of intimacy with the partner; stress, both structural and situational; having health problems related to carer stress; physical and mental exhaustion; anger; disappointment; frustration; general loss and grief; resentment; sadness; anxiety; and the monotony of the caring role. Environmental factors were rarely mentioned as being stressful. There appeared to be a connection between care giver stress and elder abuse in eight of the nine cases studied, notably psychological abuse. Physical abuse was indirect, and only one possible instance of neglect was noted. Sexual and material/financial abuse were not represented in the sample of case studies. Theories associated with elder abuse explored in the study included: stress theory; crisis theory; learned violence; issues of dependency; mental impairment; loss and grief; societal ageism and sexism. The findings lend only partial support to the situational model as a possible explanation for elder abuse. This study identified as situational factors: physical dependency; poor health; impaired mental status; difficult personalities in the care recipients; and corresponding care giver health problems. Only one structural factor was identified, namely social isolation. The concepts associated with social exchange theory - including power advantage/disadvantage, positive sentiments, rewards and punishments, instrumental services and personal resources - were evident across the nine cases. However, without the application of additional variables, it could not be concluded that social exchange theory, on its own, adequately explained elder abuse. No one theory emerged as offering a satisfactory explanation for the causes of elder abuse, suggesting that its complex and diverse nature defies a single causal theory.

Thesis, Paris 5, 2013. http://www.theses.fr/2013PA05D010.

Full text
Abstract:

Abstract:
The house is located in a quiet part of Strachotín. The plot itself is now used as agricultural land. The bio corridor belt creates a natural dominance around the area and ensures safe drainage of water during torrential rains. The concept is based on a wide range of services and care. The home for seniors will become part of the life of all seniors in the village and nearby. Supporting home-based autonomy allows seniors to live in their own home and only use the services that are available. Visits and social activities are a matter of course. Accommodation in the house itself will preferably be provided to seniors who require constant care. The operating standard of the home is designed to a very good standard. The home offers a barrier-free environment, single or double rooms. Meeting rooms are an important part of the house, along with a garden and bathing biotope. Separate living from operation guarantees a high level of privacy and allows direct contact with the garden.

Abstract:
Development of information and communication technologies of the last decade has had a significant impact on how people communicate, consume information and deal with daily situations. The role of the Internet in today’s world seems to be irreplaceable; however, to be a part of the new information society, digital skills and access to technology are required. Among other groups, majority of the seniors are having difficulties to adapt to the new technologies and lack access to it. This social group would greatly benefit from opportunities digital media offers, as it could provide potential of longer independent living and more convenience and entertainment in daily life. Unfortunately, the digital divide prevents seniors from utilizing the benefits that are available for the rest of the society. Despite the advantages, an age associated digital divide is still very topical in many countries, including Latvia. This study explores the reasons behind the digital divide in Latvia and examines the needs of seniors that could be supported by development of digital skills and access to digital technologies. The work is based on the theoretical background and uses both qualitative and quantitative material collected from seniors and experts in the field. The results showed that the most influential reasons behind age associated digital divide in Latvia are financial instability, lack of digital skills and motivation. Latvia is one of the most developed countries in the information and communication technologies field, and has advanced online services, which could be successfully used by seniors; however group’s interests are largely ignored as there are few opportunities to acquire digital skills. Based on these findings three solutions are developed to help improve with the situation.

Abstract:
Proper nutrition can promote healthy aging by preventing disease and disability and thereby helping to maintain autonomy. Seniors are at risk of declining nutritional status as they age. We investigated medical, psychological, social and environmental characteristics as both predictors and correlates of elevated nutritional risk in community-dwelling seniors using data from a prospective study of 839 seniors aged 75 and over, in Montreal. At baseline, more than half (59%) of the participants were at elevated nutritional risk. Cross-sectional analyses supported the findings of previous research examining correlates of elevated nutritional risk. Longitudinal results showed that amongst those at low nutritional risk, only poor self-rated health was found to be a statistically significant predictor of elevated risk at 12-months (OR=3.30, p<0.05). The findings of this research highlight the need for longitudinal studies in order to better understand and target nutritional risk in community-dwelling seniors.

Abstract:
Intergenerational programs that bring together young people and older adults have been the subject of investigation in recent years. However, there is little research on the topic of intergenerational education programs, and virtually no research on collaborative, intergenerational music education programs in public school settings. This study sought to capture senior citizens' reflections on their experience as co-participants with adolescents in an Ontario Ministry of Education fully-funded daytime instrumental band program. This program has been running continuously and successfully at a high school since 1994. The site is a rich source of information about the ways in which seniors interact musically, socially and educationally with their own age cohort and with adolescents in this co-learning environment. Qualitative data were gathered using tools of ethnography including participant observation, interview and document analysis, while quantitative data regarding demographic and other information about participants' backgrounds, experience, practice habits and so forth were gathered by means of a questionnaire. An instrumental case study approach was used to investigate the associations of young and old both in social and learning contexts in a broad sense, so that the findings would not be limited to the specific interactive associations that occurred in a music learning and performance environment, but could be applied to other intergenerational associative situations. The study reports on the personal, social and intellectual benefits that senior participants divulged as they reflected on their participation in an intergenerational instrumental music program. The study concluded that an active daytime high school music program that included senior citizens as registered music students, which supported the interaction of young and old as equals in music learning activities, resulted in a greater understanding, acceptance, care, respect and appreciation of one age group for another. Recommendations for social policy regarding support for intergenerational, collaborative, publicly funded educational programs are offered.

Wang, Chenxu. "Économie du tourisme des seniors et spécialisation internationale." Thesis, Toulouse 2, 2019. http://www.theses.fr/2019TOU20005.

Full text
Abstract:
The purpose of senior tourism eonomics is to analyze international tourism in the context of tourism demand from the elderly. For this purpose, it is necessary to define what a senior tourist is: it is a person over 60 years old who leaves his main place of residence and travels to another country, according to the definition of the World Tourism Organization. The theoretical framework of senior tourism economics and international economics is the theory of international specialization. This thesis shows that the theories of international specialization can explain senior tourism. This is particularly the case with the theory of demand, the theory of comparative costs and the theory of technological factor endowments. In order to support this theoretical demonstration, it was decided in this thesis to compare senior tourism in France and in China. This international comparison makes it possible to show that senior tourism must be segmented on the one hand by ages and on the other hand by motivations. Thus, this comparative analysis makes it possible to complete the theoretical analysis by showing that the consideration of this segmentation can lead to the development of determining factors for senior tourism, that can be useful in the context of bilateral and multilateral international comparisons

Abstract:
A social rehabilitation in the Seniors´ Home Máj in České Budějovice A social rehabilitation is a complex of activities encouraging an independence, self-sufficiency and social integration of clients of the Seniors´ Home. An aim of the thesis is to evaluate a progress of the social rehabilitation in the Seniors´ Home Máj in České Budějovice. A qualitative research was carried out to achieve objectives of the thesis. Five clients were chosen in order to determine a subjective evaluation of the social rehabilitation. Semi-standardized interviews were conducted with them. An observation method was applied at their engaging in activities in the Seniors´ Home as well as at seniors outside this facility, and a method of document analysis. Obtained information has been contained in case studies and they were analysed by using a grounded theory. Semi-standardized interviews were also conducted to find out attitudes of the professional staff and managers to the social rehabilitation. Factors affecting clients´ social functioning were also monitored in a course of the observation. Information from the interviews with the staff and the observation were again analysed through a method of the grounded theory. The thesis confirms findings of similarly oriented researches. It shows that the course of the social rehabilitation is influenced by institutional, personal and economic influences. The effect of applied methods and techniques of the social rehabilitation depends on an approach of the staff as well as clients and a quality of the clients´ social relations. The research has proven that an integration of clients in the facility as well as outside is supported by a wide offer of leisure time activities. Even if the clients in the Seniors´ Home have enough opportunities for mutual meetings, they are not usually successful in establishing a fully-fledged friendship and they often feel lonely. Although there is encouraged self-sufficiency per clients´ individual needs in the Seniors´ Home Máj, therapeutic activities are conducted and clients participate in physical activities, their level of self-sufficiency reduces. Results of the diploma thesis are stimulating for the staff of the Seniors´ Home Máj as well as for other social service founders and providers.

This MA thesis encompasses the motivation of the applicant to apply for a long-term stay at a retirement home. The theoretical part analyses the needs that seniors have, describes the system of care of the elderly and its problems, as well as the limits, motivation and psychosocial aspects of family care of the elderly, and the effect of a retirement home residence on the personality and quality of life of the elderly. The empirical part is formed as a quantitative research with the use of questionnaires. Respondents were selected out of the applicants for a long-term stay at a retirement home. The aim of the empirical part of the MA thesis is to answer the key question of the entire research: what life situation is responsible for the applicant's motivation for applying for a long-term stay at a retirement home. The empirical part describes the research objectives, research methods and research groups and poses the research questions. The received data are than analyzed, and the results are subjected to a critical scrutiny in a discussion. This diploma thesis is concerned with the barriers to education for the elderly . In the theoretical part there is introduced the theoretical framework of gerontology as well as other related issues i.e. the ageing, old age, quality of life and different forms of education for older adults. The practical segment of the thesis deals with the actual research and summary of the data obtained by the survey. The survey encompasses multiple aspects such as gender, age or in particular the age distribution within the group of elderly learners, or their highest level of educational attainment. The research aims at discovering whether the level of education acquired by seniors previously in life could somehow influence their desire to learn more in old age. Therefore , if there exists a stronger tendency to engage in further education among the vocational, highschool or university graduates. Other perspectives of the research are the geographical location of learners, their field of study or their motives behind the participation in the University of the Third Age studies. The goal of the thesis is to find a wide spectrum of people who attend U3A and thus identify the barriers, which could have faced the ones who had chosen not to engage in further studies. Abstract:
This thesis tries to show a view of current adolescents on older people. It focuses especially on attitudes and opinions which create an image of a senior in nowaday's society. The theoretical part which is divided into four chapters includes basic terms: these are widening general knowledge about discussed problematics. The most important terms appear in the first part - adolescence, old age and perception. They describe physical and psychical aspects and tendencies that are typical of both stages (relationship of an individual to himself or herself, adaptation to ageing, satisfaction in life and vitality in elderly). Attention is drawn to socialization process which allows larger integration of adolescents into social life. This area is strongly connected to the area of social relationships including both adolescents and seniors. Such relationships can be seen especially in families, among relatives, friends or peers and their intensity changes over time. Very important and highly debated topic is also discrimination of older people. This topic forms the final part of this thesis. The last chapter deals with meanings of children's drawing and follows units which form this meaning (colours, size of figure, quality of lines). This part also includes a research of perception of seniors which was made in the USA. The practical part shows seniors graphically pictured by students of the eighth classes. These pictures are completed by information obtained from questionaries. The conclusion compares results of both researches.

Annotation: In this diploma thesis I present different forms of socialization of older adults and I also describe ways of patient activation, especially concerning their availability and importance. The theoretical part discusses old age and its general characteristics also mentioning demographical changes and consequences of population ageing. In this part I deal with whole life education and activation of older adults as well. Quantitative questionnaire in the practical part is focused on leisure of the older adults living in Prague and also on the offer of activities accessible by elderly people in general. I analyse the attitude of older adults towards this offer and their evaluation of specific activities. Finally, I found several motivating factors of active attitude towards ageing and, on the other hand, I reveal some of those determining passivity and disengagement of senior citizens.

The thesis is focused on Education and motivating seniors in social institutions and it aims to map the possibilities of education for older people. First the theoretical part deals with the current theme of aging, attitudes of the society to the elderly people and also a range of institutional education for seniors. It also points to the fact that the loss of self-sufficiency and social placement into a residential facility must not forcibly terminate social human activity. The author describes the possible pitfalls of seniors' position in the constitutional device, the phase of adaptation and education. Second the practical part compares the qualitative conditions, features of educational work and the satisfaction of seniors with activation - educational programs in various types of residential facilities. The important finding is that a proportionately larger capacity of facilities in increasing the range of educational programs and the satisfaction of educators with creative work. Most of the interviewed seniors are satisfied with educational programs and particularly welcomes a common form of education, aimed at the enhancement of cognitive functions.

A group of volunteers from a seniors association in southeastern Ontario are used to investigate how seniors become volunteers, why individuals continue to volunteer at a particular place, what tasks senior volunteers perform, and the number of years and hours seniors volunteer at a particular organization. The study makes use of 23 interviews with volunteers aged 54 to 89. The findings from the interviews were then compared to national data on senior volunteers gathered from the 2004 Canada Survey of Giving, Volunteering, and Participating (CSGVP). The secondary data were used to examine such things as, the tasks senior volunteers perform and the reasons seniors volunteer across Canada. The analysis reveals that the group of volunteers show several similarities to volunteers aged 55 and over across Canada. The interviews show that the specific characteristics of the place influence why seniors volunteer and continue to volunteer at this particular organization. In addition to the characteristics of the place, the interviews disclose the potential to view the seniors centre as a therapeutic landscape, where healing, well-being and maintained health are enhanced.

Our country is highly developed on informatization. Accompanied with the increase of low birth rate and long life expectancy, Taiwan has stepped into an aging society for many years. Therefore, letting the elderly benefit from applications of information technology is now an important issue. The deployment of our government’s information construction, elderly lifelong education, and the daily use of information technology have created digital opportunities for a portion of the elderly population. However, a large number of the elderly population has not used the Internet yet. The samples of this study came from the survey data about digital opportunities of pre-senior people (aged 50-64) and senior people (aged over 65) in Taiwan collected by SRDA. This study aims at analyzing the effectiveness of the Internet for Internet users and the expectant effectiveness for the internet non-users, with respect to the variation of the population’s characteristics. The effectiveness degrees of 9 items and 5 perspectives from Internet users and non-users were investigated. The factors of not using the Internet were analyzed as well. Methods of descriptive statistics, chi-square test, cross analysis, independent sample t test, Spearman rank correlation coefficient, and multiple regression analysis were used. Discriminative analysis was deployed to identify the potential Internet users from the Internet non-users. Factors of not using the Internet were also investigated. The results of this study are similar to those of previous studies done by other researchers. That is, the Internet non-users are affected more by the population characteristics than the Internet users. Although women have more underprivileged population characteristics than men, the usage of Internet by women results in higher effectiveness. No matter Internet users or non-users, the cognitive advantage of using the Internet is mainly about interest. Nineteen percent of the non-users were recognized as potential Internet users by discriminative analysis, which makes it worthwhile for our government to adopt appropriate measures to improve Internet penetration rate. The author also proposes strategies, in accordance with the non-user population characteristics and the investigation results, to urge non-users and potential Internet users to start using the Internet.

Abstract:
My graduation thesis focuses on training memory with senior citizens. The main aim of this work is to define methods, techniques and benefits of memory training for senior citizens. The first aim was to investigate if there was some memory training (i.e. which forms were applied, how often, what kind of education the persons conducting this form of activation had achieved) in rest homes in Strakonice District. The second aim was to find out how beneficial the memory training was from the point of view of senior people as well as from the point of view of workers carrying out memory training in old people's homes. The research was done in the Rest Home for Seniors in Blatná, in the Home of Restful Old Age of St. Anna in Sousedovice, in the Home for Seniors in Strakonice - Jezárky, in the Home for Seniors in Strakonice - Lidická and In the Home for Seniors in Vodňany. To get the necessary information I have chosen a semi-controlled interview, i.e. qualitative research. The research group consisted of 32 seniors participating in memory training courses and the other one of 7 memory trainers conducting memory training sessions in the homes for seniors in Strakonice District. The results of the research have been processed in the form of a case study.

Abstract:
This work deals with changes in the expectations of seniors before and after joining the home for seniors. The aim of the research was to map out what ideas the elderly people come to and how they met their expectations after joining the home for the elderly. The thesis is divided into a theoretical part and an empirical part. The first chapter of the theoretical part defines the concepts of age and aging, describes age-related changes, seniors' needs and possible ways of preparing and adapting to old age. The second chapter explains the concept of quality of life and its dimension, describes the factors that influence the quality of life and the methods of measurement. The conclusion of the second chapter deals with the quality of life of seniors. The third chapter describes the possibilities of caring for the elderly in the home and in the homes for the elderly. In the practical part, the aim of the thesis is set out and research questions are asked: "What do the seniors come to the home for seniors?" "In what areas did the expectations of the elderly after the admission into the home for seniors have been fulfilled?" The following is a description of the used method, research carried out by a qualitative survey, a semi-structured interview technique and document analysis. Research has shown that the most important areas for seniors' satisfaction are the feeling of peace, security and safety, care and relationships with loved ones. Senior citizens were provided with care by family members in conjunction with outreach care before entering the home for the elderly. Reasons for going home for seniors were reduced self-sufficiency and repeated falls. Some seniors came to the home for seniors with prejudices, but most knew the device from personal experience, positive narrative of clients' families or websites. Everyone expected them to be adequately cared for in their homes and that their safety would be ensured. They were afraid of the regime they would have to obey, the limitations of their space, and their relations with staff and roommates. The expectation of seniors has been fully satisfied, in most cases it has surpassed them. All seniors expressed higher satisfaction with care in the home for the elderly than in home care. They were particularly valued to ensure dignified and continuous care, respect for the privacy, expertise and professionalism of staff, their willingness to solve problematic situations by individual approach, warmth and human attitude. The results of this research can contribute to the destigmatization of homes for the elderly as a facility to live. The diploma thesis can thus be beneficial especially to seniors who are afraid of leaving home for the seniors and to remove the prejudices associated with entering the home for the elderly.

Abstract:
The aim of a research in this graduation work was to find out how the clients of the Home for Seniors in Humpolec are satisfied with providing this social service. The target was mainly to map areas which are considered problematic by the social service users themselves. The Home for Seniors has resides in a building not originally determined for these purposes since 1962. The Home is currently trying, as many other institutions of social services, to comply with social services quality standards in unsuitable architectural conditions. Despite the users themselves gave their satisfaction with providing the social service, the research also resulted in listing a few problem areas. It was mainly the area of public services availability. Major reasons of respondents dissatisfaction in this area were architectural barriers that make their full participation in everyday life impossible. Another problem areas were keeping privacy on users rooms, mainly at moments of carrying on personal hygiene, approachability of sanitary facilities from users rooms, and to a less extent an area of meals or coexistence. I expected areas of meals and accomodations to be the most urgent of the services provided. Although my assumption was wrong, according to the results of the performed research, certain problems in this area may be taken into account. The results of the research also indicate that improvement in the users satisfaction with the services provided would require bigger system changes, that are nowadays unfortunately impossible from many obvious reasons. However, in the future is possible to expect the area of residential social services to undergo transformation in harmony with social services quality standards towards the services of better quality and higher evaluation.

Abstract:
In my diploma thesis I deal with the issue of individual planning as an important tool for social integration of seniors after their entering into the residential social services - Retirement Home Třebíč. The issue of population aging and the seniors seeking residential social services becomes an important issue today and it is related to the increasing length of human life. This thesis consists of a theoretical and an empirical part. The theoretical part is divided into eleven chapters and includes the basic issues related to the main research question. In the empirical part of the diploma thesis there is the goal stated, which is to chart a setting of the individual planning process in the Retirement Home Třebíč. A qualitative research method was applied for a data collection and a sub-analysis method was chosen to create groups (clumps). The major research question for this thesis was established: "Does the individual planning in the Retirement Home Třebíč serve for social integration of the service users?" To answer the main research question, five specific research questions were defined: 1. Are the physiological needs of the users being fulfilled? 2. Is the clients' need for security being fulfilled? 3. Are the social needs of clients being fulfilled? 4. Is the need of clients' autonomy being fulfilled, 5. Are clients satisfied with the individual planning? The research work itself was conducted in two phases. A preliminary research was performed in the first phase and only then the research itself followed. The resulting data were structured and presented according to the specific research questions. The research showed that the respondents are satisfied with individual planning in the Retirement Home Třebíč. In order for the social integration of service users to be complete, not only social but also physiological needs, the need for security and autonomy of residents' needs should be fulfilled. Only if a full range of needs is fulfilled completely, one can speak of a functioning social integration. The research also revealed that all respondents have a key worker and know her name. They identically also answered the question whether they have an individual plan of care formed for them. It reflects wishes of the user if the provided services of the home allow that. To answer the main research question "Does the individual planning in the Senior Home Třebíč serve for social integration of the service users?" my answer is yes. One of the important areas that affect the individual planning and service users' satisfaction is a mutual communication between the residents and staff of the facility. Their proactive approach is of great importance in all areas assessed. In the interviews, clients also repeatedly praised the friendly atmosphere in the home. This thesis should expand awareness of an individual planning in a retirement home among students, home workers, especially key employees, but also the general public.

Abstract:
The dissertation describes the quality of seniors´ life in homes for seniors. It is difficult to create a generally valid definition of the quality of life because of multidimensional and objektive character of this problem. But it is possible to look for factors having influence on the quality of life and for understanding of needs connected with subjective perception of the quality of seniors' life. The definition of theoretical connections in the first part of the work is concentrated on the problem of growing old and old age in connection with looking into the quality of seniors? life. Special attention is payed to the problem of life quality in general with regard to the quality of seniors? life. In the research part there are results and their use in practice. A quantitative research strategy (especially a method of interwieving) was used to reach the research intent. The author of the dissertation has used a combination of three questionnaires created by the World Health Organization which are focused on seniors´ life quality research ? their standardized Czech version: WHOQOL?OLD, WHOQOL?BREF and the questionnaire concernig attitudes to growing old and old age ? AAQ. The main aim of the dissertation was to find out a level of the quality of seniors´ life in homes for seniors, to evaluate the quality of life in various life domains from the point of view of their importance for general satisfaction with the quality of life. The author has researched an influence of sociodemographical indicators on subjective perception of the quality of seniors´ life in homes for seniors. In the last part of the dissertation there are mentioned particular fields which influence the quality of seniors´ life and there are described factors participating in the quality of life. Paying attention to the quality of seniors´ life in homes for seniors not only by seniors themselves but also by managers of these facilities ? it is a practical benefit of author´s dissertation. Several homes for seniors have showed interest in cooperation to create manuals for key management. These manuals will become a methodical material for creation of individual plans for seniors in homes for seniors. Knowledge of factors impressing the quality of seniors´ life can help to define needs of seniors in homes for seniors and to make easier planning aims of provided services. Other practical benefit of this work is publishing a special scientific publication called Quality of seniors´ life in homes for seniors which will be published by Grada Publishing in August 2012. The theoretical solutions and research results of this dissertation will be presented here. The reason of choosing the theme ?Quality of seniors´ life in homes for seniors? was to show an importace of perception of a man based on bio-psycho-social and spiritual level including his subjective outlook on satisfaction of his personal needs. This philosophy is tightly connected with the quality of provided services in long-stay facilities. The quality of provided services can be judged according to objective indicators including subjective perception of particular users.
