Haynes, Ian. Identity and the Military Community in Roman Britain. Edited by Martin Millett, Louise Revell, and Alison Moore. Oxford University Press, 2014. http://dx.doi.org/10.1093/oxfordhb/9780199697731.013.026.

Abstract:
This chapter explores various approaches to gender, status, religion, and ethnicity within military communities in Roman Britain. It argues that the rich array of data found in and around the forts and fortresses offers a valuable opportunity to look afresh at how identities were defined and constructed. New approaches to this data have played a valuable role in counterbalancing the traditional focus on the official structures of Roman power, by offering a sense of the diversity of responses to these structures among soldiers and their dependants.

Abstract:
Our relationships to places, people, and our physical and metaphysical environment drive our personal journeys. Our identity develops from birth through this complex web of relationships where skills, creativity, and personality grow in unique pathways. A sense of place is about this personal development as well as the way communities grow in response to their constituents in a symbiotic process of sympathetic exchange. This chapter will examine how music and culture articulate these changes and through examining forms of practice in historic and geographic contexts I will also investigate aspects of the role of the artist, educator, and facilitator. Over thirty years I have created work inspired by the towns and countryside of Morecambe Bay in the North West of England. Through detailed examination of this work in this chapter, I introduce themes of cultural creativity, vernacular art, and civic and personal celebration that are at the heart of the work of a community musician.

Ali, Muna. The “Identity Crisis” of Younger Muslims. Oxford University Press, 2018. http://dx.doi.org/10.1093/oso/9780190664435.003.0003.

Full text
Abstract:
This chapter considers the narrative of an alleged “identity crisis” among young Muslim Americans, whereby they are torn between seemingly irreconcilable worlds of home/community/Islam and a secular society and that presumably puts them at risk for radicalization. The chapter dissects this narrative, then examines the theoretical landscape for identity formation and constructs an alternative synthesis that serves as the theoretical framework for this book. The chapter then explores the participants’ self-narrations of how they see themselves through recountings of childhood experiences at home, school, college, and as adults. This chapter argues that rather than suffering from this pathologized “identity crisis,” young Muslims struggle with issues of normal development, recognizing the difficulty of being a young person marked in American society by multiple differences (race, ethnicity, and religion); but they learn to navigate that challenging course and construct a sense of self that incorporates all the different “parts” of themselves, as one of the participants put it.

Smilde, Rineke. Community Engagement and Lifelong Learning. Edited by Brydie-Leigh Bartleet and Lee Higgins. Oxford University Press, 2018. http://dx.doi.org/10.1093/oxfordhb/9780190219505.013.32.

Abstract:
This chapter discusses the relationship of community engagement through music and the concept of lifelong learning, which is a dynamic concept of learning that enables us to respond to change. Underpinning the work of community musicians is the notion that artistic processes can have transformative potential that can bring about a sense of community, inclusion, and collective identity. Three case studies of community engagement will be explored with different aims and points of departure but with shared values and approaches, comprising important aspects of the concept of lifelong learning. Outcomes of the case studies are discussed and key issues on community engagement in these examples are reflected. In addition, implications for the training and education of community musicians are discussed in this light, aiming at considerable artistic and personal development of the musicians involved. This involves a strong plea to demarginalize community engagement in the curricula of music colleges.
