Enslin, John Victor. "Kant on Human Dignity: A Conversation among Scholars." Thesis, Boston College, 2014. http://hdl.handle.net/2345/3807.

Abstract:
Thesis advisor: Ronald K. Tacelli
This dissertation aims to examine the notion of 'human dignity' in Kant by means of a conversation with three Kantian scholars. One cannot understand Kant's notion of human dignity without placing it in the context of his moral thought. For this reason we look in Chapter One at the philosopher Roger Sullivan. His major work Immanuel Kant's moral theory includes a highly detailed treatment of human dignity. I shall present an analysis of his understanding within the context of his methodology and his general approach to Kant's moral philosophy. We look in Chapter Two at Susan Shell and her 'Kant on Human Dignity.' In addition to this, we consider Shell's methodology and some of her work on the early Kant where we find the roots of Kant's conception of dignity. Chapter Three addresses Oliver Sensen and his novel interpretation of Kant's use of the term 'dignity.' Utilizing the tools of Analytical Philosophy, he enters into dialogue with Kantian interpreters, suggesting that their understanding of dignity in Kant harbours elements at odds with Kant's thought and that they thus fail to grasp the radical nature of Kant's notion. In the final and Fourth Chapter, I try to bring these scholars into a conversation with each other. First, I show the strengths of each position and then, using insights of Sullivan, Shell and Sensen, I venture to ask whether one could not develop the notion of a phenomenology of dignity. I also consider whether in both Shell's and Sensen's account there is not an implicit dynamic at work, which suggests the necessity of transcendence and the Good

Abstract:
Polysemy refers to word forms that have semantically related or overlapping meanings. Studies of polysemy are few in number and contradictory. Some find differences between polysemy and homonymy (Frazier & Rayner, 1990); others find similarities (Klein & Murphy, 2001). Here, polysemous words independently rated to have low, moderate, or high semantic overlap of their distinct meanings, were studied using the methods of Klein & Murphy. Participants judged the sensicality of phrases consisting of a modifier and a polysemous word as a function of a cooperating, conflicting, or neutral context. Low and moderate-overlap words elicited slower judgments than high-overlap words, and were facilitated by a cooperating context. In contrast, high-overlap words were uniformly fast and did not differ as function of context. Thus, low- and moderate-overlap polysemous words behave similarly to homonyms, whereas high-overlap words do not. This is taken as support for a lexical ambiguity continuum delimited by homonymy and polysemy, without precise boundaries between the two.

Abstract:
Architecture today does not respond to memory, the essence of character. As a result, a disengagement exists between people and place. In a world of constant movement a sense of place is not only uncommon but in some instances unknown; we are continuously in a state of motion. We commonly forget why we are here, who settled the land we now inhabit. We forget that life is more than technology bombarding us at every instant; it is more than work and more than financial success. We forget that life can be more. Architecture is also in this state of constant motion, financial success is placed ahead of experience, and as a result places become indifferent, unmemorable, and apathetic. Memory must not be put to the wayside; it is the bond that connects us to our culture. It enables our will to dream. Architecture can be the means of remembering. By cueing memory through emotion and sensory detail, one is able to pause and recall past events. The dilapidation of one’s environment can also cue memory. The act of showing the passage of time makes the past come alive. By responding to these aspects architecture becomes an indication of memory. As a result we will be connected to the land on which we live and have a reason to call that place home. We will have a heightened sense of place. Alienation and placelessness will be no more. The inevitable result of engaging memory in architecture will produce memorable spaces that inspire us, leaving us with a sense of belonging. The intention of this thesis is to illustrate that architecture is capable of unlocking memory, both collective and personal, through materials, form, and experience. This will evoke personal insights and ultimately provide memorable architecture that enhances a sense of place. As a result, we will be brought back to the days of childhood, to imagination, to a life full of meaningful events that imprint memories on the soul.

Abstract:
Throughout this thesis three main categories will be addressed. Memory: a: the power or process of reproducing or recalling what has been learned and retained especially through associative mechanisms b: the store of things learned and retained from an organism's activity or experience as evidence by modification of structure or behavior or by recall or recognition¹ Sense: a: the faculty of perceiving by means of sense organs b: a specialized function or mechanism (as sight, hearing, smell, taste or touch) by which an animal receives and responds to internal or external stimuli² Architecture: a: formation or construction resulting from or as if from a conscious act b: a unifying or coherent form or structure ³ There are many variables involved in the ability to acquire and store information, within the human memory. The senses, being one of these variables, enhance an individual's ability to retain information. Sensory influences should be addressed in architecture dedicated to memory; such as architectural memorials. Memories formed within or associated to a memorial have the potential to be carried with an individual for the rest of their life. Senses connect people to their surroundings in natural and built environments by affording them a greater perception of space. This perception helps them further understand their existence in space, in relation to objects around them. Memory and sensory are closely linked, and should be experienced together. Creating an architectural memorial which not only acknowledges who or what is being remembered, but also engages the human senses, has the ability to link experience, sense and memory to a built form of remembering. This bond of sense and memory forms an individual embodied experience, which holds the potential to coincide with experiences of individuals who experienced the memorial in the past, or of individuals who experience the memorial in the future. A memorial can become a link between generations of the past and future. It can become the present.

Abstract:
The purpose of this thesis is to explore in what way might the concept of common sense inform leadership action? The thesis takes as a starting point typical dictionary definitions of common sense and moves on to critically review related literature from, Delaney (2001), Gerber (2001), Lissack & Roos (2000), Rausch (2009), Zhao (2009) and gains an appreciation of the different aspects of common sense to understand how the implicit nature of common sense influences leadership actions within the context of a large family owned business. A description of Common Sense as something 'positive and desirable' (Fulton, 2006) whilst at that same time something taken for granted which offers the prospect of development according to Rausch (2009) and the possibility of an advanced form of Common Sense (Delaney, 2001) or Critical Common Sense (Watson, 2006) is also considered. The common sense literature is reviewed against the past theories of leadership and using Bryman's (2006) leadership framework the interconnecting elements of both strands of literature are pulled together to form a model of common sense leadership incorporating: trait, style, contingency, and new leadership. The model of common sense leadership integrates common sense with people management, the character and competence of the leader and the new leadership aspects of transformation, vision, and charisma. The research is undertaken predominantly using semi structured interviews and building on an 'interpretative and subjective' general analytical inductive methodology, it contributes to both theory and management practice by making more explicit an aspect of leadership often overlooked - a common sense approach.

Abstract:
Thesis (M.S.)--Boston University
Coherent population trapping (CPT) effects can be realized with frequency mod- ulated lasers and compact vapor cells of alkali metals such as Rubidium-87. Using these optical resonances, one can readily measure the hyperfine separation of this three-level atom. In the presence of a magnetic field, the Zeeman effect causes magnetic sublevels of these hyperfine ground states to split; the frequency of such splitting can be measured in an ensemble of Rubidium atoms with the magnetometer we have constructed. While other groups have constructed magnetometers based on these effects, none to our knowledge have investigated the capability to measure magnetic fields remotely. Most atomic-optical magnetometers, colocate the transmit and receive optical system with the vapor cell itself or require fiber optics at the location of the cell; our free-space technique with a reflective geometry lends itself to measurement at distances greater than could be achieved with those methods. We have developed a laboratory FM laser spectrometer that interrogates CPT resonances to measure magnetic fields with the vapor cell not necessarily co-located with the spectrometer. Its intrinsic linewidth (in the presence of transit-time broadening) is less than 30 kilohertz, which allows measurements on the order of 2 microtesla. We present results concerning the accuracy of the magnetometer at about one meter of standoff distance, and describe considerations for measurements at longer distances.

We present Sensei, the first system designed to understand social interaction and learning in an early-childhood classroom using a distributed sensor network. Our unobtrusive sensors measure proximity between each node in a dynamic range-based mesh network. The sensors can be worn in the shoes, attached to selected landmarks in the classroom, and placed on lessons. This data, accessible to teachers in a web dashboard, enables teachers to derive deeper insights from their classrooms. Further, the anonymized data can be used in large-scale research in early childhood. Sensei is currently deployed in three Montessori schools and we have evaluated the effectiveness of the system with teachers. Our user evaluations have shown that Sensei helps discover insights that would have otherwise been lost.

The Stanford University Satellite Systems Development Laboratory will flight test a telemetry reengineering experiment on its student-built SAPPHIRE spacecraft. This experiment utilizes solar panel current information and knowledge of panel geometry in order to create a virtual sun sensor that can roughly determine the satellite's sun angle. The Omni-Directional Differential Sun Sensor (ODDSS) algorithm normalizes solar panel currents and differences them to create a quasi-linear signal over a particular sensing region. The specific configuration of the SAPPHIRE spacecraft permits the construction of 24 such regions. The algorithm will account for variations in panel outputs due to battery charging, seasonal fluctuations, solar cell degradation, and albedo affects. Operationally, ODDSS telemetry data will be verified through ground processing and comparison with data derived from SAPPHIRE's infrared sensors and digital camera. The expected sensing accuracy is seven degrees. This paper reviews current progress in the design and integration of the ODDSS algorithm through a discussion of the algorithm's strategy and a presentation of results from hardware testing and software simulation.

Listening to lung sounds, feeling the pulse, observing posture and gait-these are just a few of the examinations that doctors perform on their patients. A physical exam exists for every organ, from the brain to the bones of the feet, each carried out with the physician's senses. For thousands of years, humans had been solely responsible for this exam ritual, until the emergence of diagnostic equipment-CT scans, MRI scans, ultrasounds, echocardiograms, mammograms, and more. In some cases, these devices replaced the physical exam. But in areas of the world where technology is unavailable, and even in places where it exists, many physicians and healthcare professionals cannot or will not to cede their tasks to tools. Their goal: to maintain an environment in which technology and the learned senses can coexist; an environment in which the physical exam remains an integral part of medicine.

Abstract:
Word sense disambiguation (WSD)—the task of determining which meaning a word carries in a particular context—is a core research problem in computational linguistics. Though it has long been recognized that supervised (machine learning–based) approaches to WSD can yield impressive results, they require an amount of manually annotated training data that is often too expensive or impractical to obtain. This is a particular problem for under-resourced languages and domains, and is also a hurdle in well-resourced languages when processing the sort of lexical-semantic anomalies employed for deliberate effect in humour and wordplay. In contrast to supervised systems are knowledge-based techniques, which rely only on pre-existing lexical-semantic resources (LSRs). These techniques are of more general applicability but tend to suffer from lower performance due to the informational gap between the target word's context and the sense descriptions provided by the LSR. This dissertation is concerned with extending the efficacy and applicability of knowledge-based word sense disambiguation. First, we investigate two approaches for bridging the information gap and thereby improving the performance of knowledge-based WSD. In the first approach we supplement the word's context and the LSR's sense descriptions with entries from a distributional thesaurus. The second approach enriches an LSR's sense information by aligning it to other, complementary LSRs. Our next main contribution is to adapt techniques from word sense disambiguation to a novel task: the interpretation of puns. Traditional NLP applications, including WSD, usually treat the source text as carrying a single meaning, and therefore cannot cope with the intentionally ambiguous constructions found in humour and wordplay. We describe how algorithms and evaluation methodologies from traditional word sense disambiguation can be adapted for the "disambiguation" of puns, or rather for the identification of their double meanings. Finally, we cover the design and construction of technological and linguistic resources aimed at supporting the research and application of word sense disambiguation. Development and comparison of WSD systems has long been hampered by a lack of standardized data formats, language resources, software components, and workflows. To address this issue, we designed and implemented a modular, extensible framework for WSD. It implements, encapsulates, and aggregates reusable, interoperable components using UIMA, an industry-standard information processing architecture. We have also produced two large sense-annotated data sets for under-resourced languages or domains: one of these targets German-language text, and the other English-language puns.

Full text
Abstract:
From the monitoring of deep ocean conditions to the imaging and exploration of the vast universe, optical sensors are playing a unique, critical role in all areas of scientific research. Optical fiber sensors, in particular, are not only widely used in daily life such as for medical inspection, structural health monitoring, and environmental surveillance, but also in high-tech, high-security applications such as missile guidance or monitoring of aircraft engines and structures. Measurements of physical parameters are required in harsh environments including high pressure, high temperature, highly electromagnetically-active and corrosive conditions. A typical example is fossil fuel-based power plants. Unfortunately, current optical fiber sensors for high-temperature monitoring can work only for single point measurement, as traditional fully-distributed temperature sensing techniques are restricted for temperatures below 800°C due to the limitation of the fragile character of silica fiber under high temperature. In this research, a first-of-its-kind technology was developed which pushed the limits of fully distributed temperature sensing (DTS) in harsh environments by exploring the feasibility of DTS in optical sapphire waveguides. An all sapphire fiber-based Raman DTS system was demonstrated in a 3-meters long sapphire fiber up to a temperature of 1400°C with a spatial resolution of 16.4cm and a standard deviation of a few degrees Celsius. In this dissertation, the design, fabrication, and testing of the sapphire fiber-based Raman DTS system are discussed in detail. The plan and direction for future work are also suggested with an aim for commercialization.

Abstract:
The power industry relies on high voltage transformers as the backbone of power distribution networks. High voltage transformers are designed to handle immense electrical loads in hostile environments. Long term placement is desired, however by being under constant heavy load transformers face mechanical, thermal, and electrical stresses which lead to failures of the protection systems in place. The service life of a transformer is often limited by the life time of its insulation system. Insulation failures most often develop from thermal faults, or hotspots, and electrical faults, or partial discharges. Detecting hotspots and partial discharges to predict transformer life times is imperative and much research is focused towards these topics. As these protection systems fail they often generate gas or acoustic signals signifying a problem. Research has already been performed discovering new ways integrate optical fiber sensors into high voltage transformers. This thesis is a continuation of that research by attempting to improve sensor sensitivity for hydrogen and acetylene gasses. Of note is the fabrication of new hydrogen sensing fiber for operation around a larger absorption peak and also the improvement of the acetylene sensor's light source stability. Also detailed is the manufacturing of a field testable prototype and the non-sensitivity testing of several other gasses. The developed sensors are capable but still could be improved with the use of more powerful and stable light sources.

Abhijith, N. "Semi Conducting Metal Oxide Gas Sensors: Development And Related Instrumentation." Thesis, Indian Institute of Science, 2006. http://hdl.handle.net/2005/281.

Abstract:
A sensor is a technological device or biological organ that detects, or senses, a signal or physical condition and chemical compounds. Technological developments in the recent decades have brought along with it several environmental problems and human safety issues to the fore. In today's world, therefore, sensors, which detect toxic and inflammable chemicals quickly, are necessary. Gas sensors which form a subclass of chemical sensors have found extensive applications in process control industries and environmental monitoring. The present thesis reports the attempt made in development of Zinc oxide thin film based gas sensors. ZnO is sensitive to many gases of interest like hydrocarbons, hydrogen, volatile organic compounds etc. They exhibit high sensitivity, satisfactory stability and rapid response. In the present work the developed sensors have been tested for their sensitivity for a typical volatile organic compound, acetone. An objective analysis of the various substrates namely borosilicate glass, sintered alumina and hard anodized alumina, has been performed as a part of this work. The substrates were evaluated for their electrical insulation and thermal diffusivity. The microstructure of the gas sensitive film on the above mentioned substrates was studied by SEM technique. The gas sensitive Zinc oxide film is deposited by D.C reactive magnetron sputtering technique with substrate bias arrangement. The characterization of the as-deposited film was performed by XRD, SEM and EDAX techniques to determine the variation of microstructure, crystallite size, orientation and chemical composition with substrate bias voltage. The thesis also describes the development of the gas sensor test setup, which has been used to measure the sensing characteristics of the sensor. It was observed that the ZnO sensors developed with higher bias voltages exhibited improved sensitivity to test gas of interest. Gas sensors essentially measure the concentration of gas in its vicinity. In order to determine the distribution of gas concentration in a region, it is necessary to network sensors at remote locations to a host. The host acts as a gateway to the end user to determine the distribution of gas concentration in a region. However, wireless gas sensor networks have not found widespread use because of two inherent limitations: Metal oxide gas sensors suffer from output drift over time; frequent recalibration of a number of sensors is a laborious task. The gas sensors have to be maintained at a high temperature to perform the task of gas sensing. This is power intensive operation and is not well suited for wireless sensor network. This thesis reports an exploratory study carried out on the applicability of gas sensors in wireless gas sensor network. A simple prototype sensing node has been developed using discrete electronic components. A methodology to overcome the problem of frequent calibration of the sensing nodes, to tackle the sensor drift with ageing, is presented. Finally, a preliminary attempt to develop a strategy for using gas sensor network to localize the point of gas leak is given.

Abstract:
RNA is a highly versatile molecule with functions that span from being a messenger in the transfer from DNA to protein, a catalytic molecule important for key processes in the cell to a regulator of gene expression. The post-genomic era and the use of new techniques to sequence RNAs have dramatically increased the number of regulatory RNAs during the last decade. Many of these are antisense RNAs, as for example the miRNA in eukaryotes and most sRNAs in bacteria. Antisense RNAs bind to specific targets by basepairing and thereby regulate their expression. A major step towards an understanding of the biological role of a miRNA or an sRNA is taken when one identifies which target it regulates. We have used RNA libraries to study the RNA interference pathway during development in the unicellular model organism Dictyostelium discoideum. We have also, by combining computational and experimental methods, discovered the first miRNAs in this organism and shown that they have different expression profiles during development. In parallel, we have developed a novel approach to predict targets for sRNAs in bacteria and used it to discover sRNA/target RNA interactions in the model organism Escherichia coli. We have found evidence for, and further characterized, three of these predicted sRNA/target interactions. For instance, the sRNA MicA is important for regulation of the outer membrane protein OmpA, the sRNAs OmrA and OmrB regulate the transcription factor CsgD, which is important in the sessile lifestyle of E. coli, and MicF regulates its own expression in a feed forward loop via the regulatory protein Lrp. In conclusion, we have discovered novel antisense RNAs, e.g. miRNAs in D. discoideum, developed an approach to identify targets for antisense RNAs, i.e. a target prediction program for sRNAs in bacteria, and verified and characterized some of the predicted antisense RNA interactions.

Abstract:
This thesis emerged from the author’s quest to increase her personal and professional effectiveness, to become more congruent, and to be a better person in the world. The thesis discusses how to move from Argyris and Schon’s behavioural model 1 (seeking answers externally, blaming others, avoiding responsibility, controlling behaviour and the belief that there is one right way) to model 2 (seeking answers from within, accepting responsibility, living in a state of flow, surprise and emergent possibilities, looking at the world in multiple ways and collaborating with others). Drawing from her own experiences and interactions with others, the author explores issues such as how people learn the qualities that enable them to be better people; what experiences have enabled people to move toward model 2; what happens when a group, especially within an organisation, moves toward model 2 and how does this happen; and how can conditions be created to enable individuals or groups to move toward model 2.

Hiruta, Kei. "Making sense of pluralism." Thesis, University of Oxford, 2012. http://ethos.bl.uk/OrderDetails.do?uin=uk.bl.ethos.568563.

Full text
Abstract:
Political theorists in the last few decades have developed three distinct kinds of pluralism, as they attempt to imagine a political life appropriate for an increasingly complex world characterised by the excessively unifying forces of globalisation and the potentially divisive forces of mass migration and multiculturalisation. 'Value pluralism' theorises the inherently conflicting nature of human value, providing us with a way of approaching moral, cultural, and political conflict; 'democratic pluralism' considers the nature of intermediate groups in civil society and their role to viable democratic politics; and 'agonistic pluralism' commends an ideal of democratic life where citizens actively and expressively engage in political activities to acquire a sense of identity and solidarity. Contemporary debates over value, democratic and agonistic pluralisms have taken place largely in isolation with each other; this thesis challenges the convention and offers a first comprehensive analysis of the contemporary pluralist ideas and their simultaneous emergence in the mid-twentieth century. The first part of the thesis discusses the pioneering formulations of value, democratic and agonistic pluralisms in the works of Isaiah Berlin, Robert Dahl, and Hannah Arendt, and analyses how those works have shaped the post- ,;.. 1980s debates. The second part considers why multiple kinds of pluralism emerged as they did in the 1950s and 1960s. It argues that Berlin, Dahl and Arendt all appealed to the idea of 'the plural' as they attempted to propose antidotes to multi dimensionally monist totalitarianism, and that they formulated different pluralist antidotes because they theorised the nature and role of political theory differently and accordingly focused on different aspects oftotalitarianism. The lesson to be learnt from the mid-twentieth century is that real-world changes pose complex monist challenges to multiple aspects of life, so that those who care about pluralism must overcome today's fragmentation of pluralist discourses and become acquainted with diverse vocabularies to mobilise multiple pluralist ideas.

Abstract:
In this thesis I trace ideas about naturalistic inquiry into commonsense understanding through Chomsky's work. I argue that the resulting picture significantly illuminates both the nature of `common sense' and existing interdisciplinary debates surrounding it. Specifically, I claim that progress in investigating the nature of humans' commonsense understanding of psychology (folk psychology) has been hampered by the same kind of methodological dualism which for so long haunted scientific accounts of language. Following Chomsky, I discuss in general how a rationalist inquiry into cognitive domains other than language could proceed by positing `learning theories' for organisms in given domains, LT (0, D), and attempting to characterize their interaction with experience and the resulting knowledge structures. I further consider how the Language Faculty and a Science Forming Faculty might contribute to our introspective awareness of the understanding of the world delivered to us by core commonsense principles. In particular, taking into account methodological insights gained from the study of language, I put forward a view of a Psychology Faculty and I adapt some ideas from Grice (1975) as a first step towards a positive proposal. Evidence from current developmental and ethological research is presented in support of my position. I thus draw out substantial similarities both between the study of language and the study of commonsense psychology, and between the objects of study in each case. By defusing possible philosophical objections to the comparison, I articulate a detailed defence of my claims.

Abstract:
The experience of causing and controlling one s own actions and their consequences is a major aspect of our self-awareness, which has been termed sense of agency or experience of authorship. The underlying neural and cognitive mechanisms are still not well understood. In two consecutive experiments on action awareness, the electroencephalogram (EEG) of healthy participants was recorded to measure brain activity related to the perception of visual feedback. Reduced neuronal activity (sensory attenuation) in response to self- versus externally generated feedback was taken as an implicit measure for the sense of agency. The results showed that the amount of sensory attenuation was primarily determined by the mere presence of an action and external cues independent of highly precise predictions based on specific contingency rules. Explicit judgments of agency, in contrast, were mainly determined by high degrees of contingency between action and feedback, and external cues had an influence only in ambiguous contexts where contingency information was not reliable enough. A third EEG study investigated patients suffering from obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD). OCD is characterized by lacking a sense of completion and agency for action outcomes. The results of this study revealed that OCD patients fail to suppress the consequences of their own action. Embodied signals were used less by patients for making specific predictions of the action feedback. In conclusion, the present work offers validation of sensory attenuation as an implicit measure of non-conceptual agency experience, and provides evidence that the sense of agency is based on an optimal integration of multiple embodied and external, contextual cues. Moreover, the present research reveals for the first time, to our knowledge - reduced gating of extracorporeal sensory action consequences in patients suffering from OCD, which may explain aberrant feelings of action completion and agency in these patients.

Abstract:
By exploring the relationship between rituals and human behavior in relationship to architectural design the project "A Sense of Russia" searches for answers to new ways of sharing and experiencing culture over national boundaries, creating a stronger and clearer insight by physically engaging the visitor to be part of the other and the yet unknown. Using Russia and the program of the traditional Russian steam bath banya as a set framework, the project aims to address the subject through the implementation of one architectural incision. Questioning what place and shape a fragment of Russia would take in a non-Russian context like Sweden. By going through the different layers of human physical and mental interpretation, a patchwork of sorts, engaging in phenomenological and sociological ideas, this thesis explores how culture could be experienced through architectural design. Through the process of digging, casting and carving the project results in a proposal at the site of The Russian Yard located in Slussen, Stockholm. While unravelling the historical layers on site the proposal aims to offer new impressions and make the visitor behave in new patterns through unexpected scenarios. Trying to make Sweden see, hear, feel and maybe even make a little sense of Russia.

Jolly, Clare. "Making sense of parenthood." Thesis, City University London, 2014. http://openaccess.city.ac.uk/12305/.

Full text
Abstract:
Research into parents’ experiences of becoming parents is widespread. However research regarding therapy for parents, and how that may impact on the meanings parents give to parenthood is rare. In response to this lack of knowledge, this study explores parents’ experiences of counselling at SureStart children’s centres and how that experience affects their perceptions of themselves as parents, and their on-going experience of parenthood. The study was conducted using phenomenological methodology. Data was collected via four semi-structured interviews. Participants were parents who had received counselling at a local children’s centre. They had between two and four children each, aged between eight months and four years. Interviews were transcribed verbatim and analysed using Interpretative Phenomenological Analysis (IPA). Three superordinate themes are evidenced – i. Who am I?, ii. Feeling out of Control and iii. Parenthood and Counselling. Parents’ sense of a parental identity and sense of agency changed when they became parents and over time, and therapy was used to explore these differences in experience. Despite accessing therapy, participants did not identify with people whom they thought of as needing mental health services. It is suggested that children’s centre counselling services could become a “gateway” to other parenting support as the parent learns to experience a therapeutic relationship, gains a better sense of agency, and trusts that the professionals are not judging them. The findings are examined in the light of the extant literature which suggests, for example, that parents may experience dissonance between their concept of “parent” and their concept of “client.” They may also find parenthood harder if their thinking is not “principle led”. The research findings indicate that there is still much to learn about this participant group, and suggestions are made for further research in this area.

Nudds, Matthew. "The nature of the senses." Thesis, University College London (University of London), 2000. http://sas-space.sas.ac.uk/910/.

Full text
Abstract:
My thesis provides an account of the nature of the senses. Many philosophers have supposed that the fact that we have different senses makes the integration of the senses problematic. In this thesis I argue that introspection reveals our perceptual experience to be amodal or unitary (that is, we cannot distinguish distinct experiences associated with each of our senses) and hence that the real problem is not how the senses are integrated with one another, but how and why we distinguish five senses in the first place. What we need is an account of what our judgements are about when we judge that we are, say, seeing something or some property. I argue that such an account cannot take any of the forms commonly supposed. Philosophers often assume that an account must appeal to differences between kinds of experience, but I argue that such differences are not sufficient to explain the way that we distinguish five senses. Nor can we explain the distinction by appealing to the different kinds of mechanism involved in perceiving, since recent cognitive psychological models of the mechanisms of perception show them to be functionally diverse in a way that undermines any correspondence between them and the five senses, and our common-sense grasp of the different mechanisms involved in perception presupposes a prior understanding of the distinction between different senses. I provide and account of the distinction that we make between the five senses, according to which the senses are not substantially distinct. Although our judgements about the senses are true, they are not judgements about kinds of thing; rather, we distinguish different ways of perceiving in terms of different, conventionally determined, kinds of perceptual interaction we can have with our environment.

Abstract:
Some form of absolutism has generally been the majority view within philosophy and in other traditions, and it is common to take absolutism for granted without providing rational arguments or empirical evidence in support of it. However, such attitudes are not viable if we want to avoid dogmatism. In this paper, I question absolutism and the closely associated correspondence theory of truth through the writings of Goodman and Nāgārjuna. I first describe Goodman‟s philosophy with a focus on his works dealing with „worldmaking‟ and multiple true versions. Subsequently follows an outline of Nāgārjuna‟s philosophy, in which he intended to show that the notion of an essence, an inherently existent entity or relation, is incoherent and that essences would be incompatible with experience. I then reflect on the relation between absolutism and relativism, and propose that the philosophies of Goodman and Nāgārjuna make it possible to transcend both. The paper ends with a discussion on the notion of knowledge in the absence of absolute entities and essences. From the works of Goodman, Nāgārjuna, and Bohm, I put forward the idea that an aspiration for a greater good and fitting is more general than a desire for knowledge of entities, and that it is therefore important to be aware of the larger context in which any given entity appears so that it can be seen to what extent further inquiry and use of it can lead to a greater good and fitting.

Grocholsky, Ben. "Information-Theoretic Control of Multiple Sensor Platforms." University of Sydney. School of Aerospace, Mechanical and Mechatronic Engineering, 2002. http://hdl.handle.net/2123/796.

Full text
Abstract:
This thesis is concerned with the development of a consistent, information-theoretic basis for understanding of coordination and cooperation decentralised multi-sensor multi-platform systems. Autonomous systems composed of multiple sensors and multiple platforms potentially have significant importance in applications such as defence, search and rescue mining or intelligent manufacturing. However, the effective use of multiple autonomous systems requires that an understanding be developed of the mechanisms of coordination and cooperation between component systems in pursuit of a common goal. A fundamental, quantitative, understanding of coordination and cooperation between decentralised autonomous systems is the main goal of this thesis. This thesis focuses on the problem of coordination and cooperation for teams of autonomous systems engaged in information gathering and data fusion tasks. While this is a subset of the general cooperative autonomous systems problem, it still encompasses a range of possible applications in picture compilation, navigation, searching and map building problems. The great advantage of restricting the domain of interest in this way is that an underlying mathematical model for coordination and cooperation can be based on the use of information-theoretic models of platform and sensor abilities. The information theoretic approach builds on the established principles and architecture previously developed for decentralised data fusion systems. In the decentralised control problem addressed in this thesis, each platform and sensor system is considered to be a distinct decision maker with an individual information-theoretic utility measure capturing both local objectives and the inter-dependencies among the decisions made by other members of the team. Together these information-theoretic utilities constitute the team objective. The key contributions of this thesis lie in the quantification and study of cooperative control between sensors and platforms using information as a common utility measure. In particular, * The problem of information gathering is formulated as an optimal control problem by identifying formal measures of information with utility or pay-off. * An information-theoretic utility model of coupling and coordination between decentralised decision makers is elucidated. This is used to describe how the information gathering strategies of a team of autonomous systems are coupled. * Static and dynamic information structures for team members are defined. It is shown that the use of static information structures can lead to efficient, although sub-optimal, decentralised control strategies for the team. * Significant examples in decentralised control of a team of sensors are developed. These include the multi-vehicle multi-target bearings-only tracking problem, and the area coverage or exploration problem for multiple vehicles. These examples demonstrate the range of non-trivial problems to which the theory in this thesis can be employed.
