Abstract:
Future sensor networks would comprise of sensing devices with energy harvesting capabilities from renewable energy sources such as solar power. A key research question in such sensor systems is to maximize the asymptotic event detection probability achieved in the system, in the presence of energy constraints and uncertainties. This thesis focuses on the design of adaptive algorithms for sensor activation in the presence of uncertainty in the event phenomena. Linear increase-decrease algorithms have applicability in various fields of research. For instance, transmission control protocol (TCP) congestion control mechanism employs an additive increase and multiplicative decrease (AIMD) algorithm to vary the congestion window size dynamically at the sender. This activation algorithm is designed in such a way that the sensor dynamically computes its sleep interval according to additive increase and multiplicative decrease, based on its current energy l

Abstract:
One of the primary oxygen sensors in human cells, which controls gene expression by hydroxylating the hypoxia inducible transcription factor (HIFα) is the factor inhibiting HIF (FIH). As FIH is an alpha-ketoglutarate dependent non-heme iron dioxygenase, oxygen activation is thought to precede substrate hydroxylation. The coupling between oxygen activation and substrate hydroxylation was hypothesized to be very tight, in order for FIH to fulfill its function as a regulatory enzyme. Coupling was investigated by looking for reactive oxygen species production during turnover. Alkylsulfatase (AtsK)

Store-operated Ca2+ entry (SOCE) is a major Ca2+ influx pathway and plays an important role in generation of the sustained Ca2+ signals in non-excitable cells. Stromal interaction molecule 1 (STIM1) is an endoplasmic reticulum (ER) Ca2+ sensor which is essential for SOCE. Upon Ca2+ depletion from ER stores, STIM1 aggregates into multiple puncta and translocates to the plasma membrane, where STIM1 interacts with Orai1 to mediate

Abstract:
Wireless sensor networks (WSNs) have emerged in strategic applications such as target detection, localization, and tracking in battlefields, where the large-scale na- ture renders centralized control prohibitive. In addition, the finite batteries in sensor nodes demand energy-aware network control. In this thesis, we propose an energy- efficient topology management model inspired by biological inter-cellular signaling schemes. The model allows sensor nodes to cluster around imminent targets in a purely distributed and autonomous fashion. In particular, nodes in the target vicinity collaborate

The impact of a tri-substituted boron moiety on the chelate sensitization of Tb(III) and Eu(III) lanthanide luminescence and their resulting photophysical properties was investigated. Two triarylboron-functionalized carboxylate ligands 1 and 2 and their respective Tb(III) and Eu(III) complexes, 1Tb, 2Tb, 1Eu and 2Eu were synthesized and fully characterized. The photophysical properties of these compounds were studied and it was established that these three-coordinate boron ligands are highly effective in selective activation of Tb(III) and Eu(III) luminescence yielding high efficiency green an

This study deals with social-activating programs for seniors. It tries to answer the question how seniors evaluate social-activating programs in Klub REMEDIUM. The main task is then to find reviews of the social services provided at Klub REMEDIUM its visitors and draw cocnclusions along with a concept of posible improvement of service delivery. As a target then I'm also interested in the contribution that seniors are seeing from the use of these services. To achieve the goals I have used a quantitative method of data collection survey, which I also completed by the qualitative method of person
