Metal Oxide Semiconductor or MOS-type gas sensors are resistive sensors which can detect different reducible or volatile gases in atmospheres with oxygen. These gas sensors have been used in different areas such as food and drink industries or healthcare, among others. In this type of sensor, the resistance value changes when it detects certain types of gases. Due to the electrical characteristics, the sensors need a conditioning circuit to transform and acquire the data. The ripeness of oil palm fruits is one of the key factors for crude palm oil qualities. Recently, electronic nose systems have been developed intensively for fruit quality assessment which relates odors to ripeness levels. This study developed an electronic nose system to characterize the ripeness levels of oil palm fruits using output voltage of each sensor and fruit hardness. The system consisted of a sensor chamber and a sample chamber. The sensor chamber consisted of eight MOS gas sensor modules of MQ series. Samples were oil palm fruits taken from oil palm fresh fruit bunches (FFB) which

This work investigates the potential use of temperature modulation of MOS gas sensors combined with the Hilbert–Huang transform (HHT) as a feature extraction mechanism for MOS-based electronic noses. Five samples each of ethyl acetate, ethanol and isopropanol were prepared. The response of each of four sensors in an array was decomposed using empirical mode decomposition and the marginal Hilbert spectrum was computed. A set of 72 frequency components was extracted from marginal Hilbert spectrum response of each sensor in an array of four sensor to produce a 288 element fingerprint of each samp

A magnetic sensor array has been designed to overcome the limitations of technologies currently employed in the retrieval of magnetically encoded information. The array is reminiscent of a linear photodiode CCD, with the exception that the photodiodes have been replaced by buried-channel MOS magnetic sensors. The use of buried-channel MOS sensor elements results in lower noise and higher sensitivity. Noise is lower because of the absence of carrier-oxide interaction. Sensitivity, a parameter proportional to Hall mobility, is enhanced because of the absence of surface scattering. Sensitivity is

The U.S. Army Engineer Research and Development Center (ERDC) performed an experiment at a site near Vicksburg, MS, during May 2014. Explosive charges were detonated, and the shock and acoustic waves were detected with pressure and infrasound sensors stationed at various distances from the source, i.e., from 3 m to 14.5 km. One objective of the experiment was to investigate the evolution of the shock wave produced by the explosion to the acoustic wavefront detected several kilometers from the detonation site. Another objective was to compare the effectiveness of different wind filter strategie

Abstract:
Obtaining timely information across the state roadway network is important for monitoring the condition of the roads and operating characteristics of traffic. One of the most significant challenges in winter roadway maintenance is identifying emerging or deteriorating conditions before significant crashes occur. For instance, almost all modern vehicles have accelerometers, anti-lock brake (ABS) and traction control systems. This data can be read from the Controller Area Network (CAN) of the vehicle, and combined with GPS coordinates and cellular connectivity, can provide valuable on-the-ground

Abstract:
High-volume fly ash concrete (HVFAC) is more cost-efficient, sustainable, and durable than conventional concrete. This report presents a state-of-the-art review of HVFAC properties and different fly ash characterization methods. The main challenges identified for HVFAC for pavements are its early-age properties such as air entrainment, setting time, and strength gain, which are the focus of this research. Five fly ash sources in Illinois have been repeatedly characterized through x-ray diffraction, x-ray fluorescence, and laser diffraction over time. The fly ash oxide compositions from the sam
