Whereas Hume?s moral philosophy can be understood as a kind of "sensualism", one might object that this is inconsistent with Humean empiricism to the extent that sensualism seems to restrict the moral agent to the limits of the senses, while Humean empiricism extendsits conclusions beyond their reach. To reply to this possible objection we advocate an interpretation that intends to reconcile Hume?s moral sensualismto his empiricism. Accordingly, it is argued first that the former is the source of our moral knowledge, while the latter compels agents to extend the conclusions of their moral inferences to the future. So it is suggested that this kind of "projectionism" would not necessarily be incompatible with sensualism. Our main hypothesis is that the relationship between sensualism and empiricism is guaranteed by the relationship between "habit" and "imagination". In this sense, the dissertation is divided into three chapters. In the first we discuss the context within which the moral philosophy of Hume is inserted. The second chapter discusses recent interpretations of Hume?s moral philosophy and proposes another alternative. In the third chapter we explain how to make generalizations is essential to our moral inferences and how the relationship between habit and imagination plays a central role in this process by causally associating sense perceptions and extending our findings to the future.

Full textThe place assigned to Gabriel Bonnot de Mably (1709-1785) in contemporary historiography is ambiguous. He is portrayed as a main influence of the French Revolution then as a precursor to the communist doctrine. Recently, the Cambridge School works' and in particular Pocock's works led to a consensus: Mably was the archetype of classical republicanism in France in 18th century. The aim of this thesis is to examine the membership of Mably in this republican tradition taking into account two fundamental elements of his thought: i) his connection with Vincent de Gournay and the "science of commerce"; ii) the influences of modern natural law and in particular that of John Locke. This leads to reassess the controversy between Mably and Physiocrats. He seems close to accepting the Physiocratie argument for a society based on self-interest and individual calculation. But only a republican solution, the participation in the collective life of every citizen, is able to secure the theory, called liberal, of natural law. His opposition to the liberalization of grain tracte results from a defense of the "science of commerce" i.e. a framed free trade. Thus, paying particular attention to Mably's intellectual influences particularly those of Locke and Gournay, this thesis highlights a new interpretative grid, a rniddle position, in which the republican language of Mably secures his theory of natural law

Histories, Written and Real, of Philosophy in France
This thesis reveals the historic schemes and the intentional occultations of materialism as imposed in France by the uniform conceptions of the writing of the history of philosophy of Degérando, Cousin and Damiron. Beside the anti-materialism generalized by the early nineteenth-century historians of philosophy, with the exception of Paul-Marie Laurent, the author also underlines the genesis of their conceptual innovations :the appearance, between 1801 and 1804, through Kant and Villers, of the doctrinal category of « sensualism », at that time unheard of in France. The effects of both omissions and innovations are still affecting us today. Forgetting them brings about a good bit of anachronisms.

Full textEroticism and romanticism are two neologisms of the end of the eighteenth century. The two have in common the concepts of sensitivity, desire and pleasure, which are the main topics of De l’amour. This book, which can be viewed as an aesthetic physiology, a feminist manifesto, a treaty of courtly love and an oriental ars erotica, is a real ekphrasis of the romantic eros in its three main issues : philosophical, aesthetic and social. Through a comparative analysis of De l’amour and its main sources of influence (the sensualists and the ideologists), we have tried to show that Stendhal had worked to define the concept of eroticism to which our most contemporary theorists pay tribute

Full textThe question of qualities is one of the oldest topics of the history of philosophy. To enumerate, seek, try out texts which, to the wire of the centuries, were devoted to him, cause a curious impression. A first reading and/or juxtaposition of research push me to note that the same questions re-appear, of time in time, almost just as they are. We will see the modernity, upon reading that the answers provided by the current neurobiologists, placed on a philosophical ground, relate to interrogations bequeathed by Plato and Aristotle. With through this memory, it is a question of drawing up, initially, a topology of qualities through the history of philosophy. We will insist on their legibility or invisibility at the time modern, and their influence in the emergence of mathematical sciences. In the second time, we will draw an epistemology of the movement which will enable us to check that statute of qualities depends the definition on mechanics and dynamics. In other words, to include/understand qualities, it is to include/understand the movement as a whole (which it is internal or external). Lastly, the final chapter, proposes to study starting from the design of a movement included/understood like simultaneity a new science of the movement: the kinosophy
Messager, Jean-Marc. "Condillac, une philosophie morale et politique oubliée." Montpellier 3, 2008. http://www.theses.fr/2008MON30091.
Full textLanguage, as a central element within Condillac system, is really understandable from the action's thematic viwpoint from wich it is possible to give back to his whole work its real unity. Through his Locke's rereading, Condillac tries to point out, as a matter of fact, that freedom depends on how we intentionally use signs to be linked to our ideas. Through analysis, the language signs are subject to desire being the origin of our faculties, to the highest faculty: the reason. Inside the individual and collective fields, moral and politics require this clear knownledge of man which, coming from the human understanding as it appears to us, could not pretend to fall into the erring ways of the old metaphysics and of the methodical mind. Exceeding the Cartesian opposition of body and soul, Condillac empiricism is going against materialism which could be a consequence. Rethinking of the body and soul's relation, Condillac shows that sensualism and spiritual nature of the soul coexist within a reflection about man without any dogmatism. From that time, Condillac's work will often be interpreted in many conflicting ways: suspected of materialism ans scarely spiritualism it will unfairly be neglected and new disciplines such as philosophy of language, of action, which it contributed to announce, will overtake it
