Abstract:
Synodality is the most important keyword for the Catholic Church of Today. It gives us the task of the integration between charismatic communion and hierarchial communion in the ecclesiological dimension. For this, it is important to understand the concept of sensus fidei (sense of the faith) as a charismatic gift for the faithful. Especially, the discernment of the ex-pressions of sensus fidei of the faithful in the application and practice of synodality is importantly needed. According to the recent documents of the International Theological Commission, the criteria for discerning the right ex-pressions of sensus fiei are faith, active participation in the life of the Church, listening to the word of God, openness to reason, adherence to the Magisterium, holiness such as humility, seeking the edification of the Church, loci theologici (the proper places for theology), and etc. After all, sensus fi-dei is a concept in a hermeneutical circle, since it is by itself one of the most important criteria for synodality, and at the same time, it should be continuously discerned by other criteria.

Abstract:
Second Vatican Council took over from the first Vatican Council the doctrine on infallible teaching of the Bishop of Rome, approved it and presented in more complete context. It is the teaching of Dogmatic Constitution on the Church Lumen gentium on infallibility of bishops when together with the pope they exercise the Church's Magisterium, and on supernatural sense of faith of all people, thanks to which they cannot get lost in faith. International Theological Commission issued “Sensus fidei” in the life of the Church, a document which deals with the issue of supernatural sense of faith of all people of God. This document presents sufficient theology of sensus fidei and therefore it is possible to attempt to place the dogma about the pope’s infallibility into more complete context which sensus fidei is a part of. Three carriers of infallibility in the Church: the pope, the college of bishops and sensus fidei are complementary to one another when it comes to explanation and defence of the divine Revelation. None of them can form anything new in relation to the Revelation. All together serve infallibility given to the Church by the Spirit of Truth.

Abstract:

A number of theologians claim that the church has not tapped into the fullness of Vatican II’s teaching on the sensus fidelium. As an attempt to address that concern, this dissertation examines the teaching authority of the laity as a key element in the expression of the sensus fidelium in the church. It argues for a fuller realization of Vatican II’s emphasis on the laity’s participation in Christ’s prophetic office. It proposes a three-part lay hermeneutic (hermeneutic of everyday life, hermeneutic of desire, and hermeneutic of trust) as a relevant, authoritative framework for discerning the sensus fidelium, of which Filipino popular Catholicism is a living expression. This dissertation employs a method that is primarily critical, hermeneutical and practical. It is structured in two parts: the first two chapters establish the theological underpinnings of the study, while the last three chapters focus on the laity, their sense of the faith, their reception process, their lived faith expressed through popular Catholicism, and their participation in the prophetic office of Christ. Through an analysis of the laity’s sensus fidei as an integral dimension in the discernment of the sensus fidelium, this dissertation emphasizes that authority in the church derives from all its members and that the interpretation of faith is a process that invites the participation of all the baptized as sharers in Christ’s prophetic function. In such a church, not only the ordained, but the laity, equally belong to the guild of interpreters of God’s revelation. The laity possess a teaching authority that contributes significantly to the life of the church

Go, J. "A critical realist epistemology and the Catholic notion of 'sensus fidei' as key to critical thinking in confessional Catholic religious education in the Philippines." Thesis, University College London (University of London), 2016. http://discovery.ucl.ac.uk/1498895/.

Abstract:
The research question is: ‘Is critical thinking compatible with confessional Catholic religious education as practiced in the Philippines? If so, in what way can it be taught to students and promoted in the classroom?’ Adopting an epistemological approach to critical thinking, I conducted a survey among 1,068 teachers in our network of fifteen Catholic schools in the Philippines and found that a significant percentage of our teachers—especially those teaching religious education—exhibited a level of epistemic cognition considered incompatible with critical thinking. Drawing from critical realism and the Catholic notion of the believer’s ‘sense of the faith’ (sensus fidei), I proposed that critical thinking be understood not only as (a) the expression of one’s commitment to judgemental rationality to serve as the basis for one’s motivation for critical thinking, but also as (b) the exercise of one’s sensus fidei to guide the actual practice of Catholic religious critical thinking in particular. Based on these two conceptions, corresponding to the disposition and competence components of critical thinking, respectively, I recommend two initial concrete steps to promote the practice of Catholic religious critical thinking in our confessional religious education classrooms in the Philippines: (a) the inclusion of a staff development programme that promotes epistemic self-awareness especially vis-à-vis a Catholic religious epistemology; and (b) the identification of the development and exercise of sensus fidei as an explicit learning objective and its implications on curriculum, pedagogy, and assessment.

The present work has the scientific aim of endowing with an adequate juridical dogmatics the complex reality that is constituted by the configuration of the internal relations of the College of Bishops, advancing also in the understanding of the intrinsically communitarian aspect of the episcopal office as a result of the relationship of unitary succession to the apostolic office of divine law. By interpreting the belonging to the College of those members who make it up uti universi through the fundamental ecclesiological value of their sacramental insertion in the "symbolism of the Twelve" (chapter I), one arrives at configuring the group of those who are united in the episcopal ministry in terms of "universitas collegialis personarum inaequali iure" (chapter III), demonstrating - starting precisely from the terminological question of "collegium" (chapter II) - how it is possible to give rise to increasingly pregnant reflections on the contribution that theological thought provides for the purposes of structuring, also juridically, the empirical internal normative character of the Church. In this way, it will be easier to identify the relationships between those nuclei of meaning that have led, in the Catholic sphere, both to a new development and enhancement (theoretical and practical) of the doctrine of episcopal collegiality within the Second Vatican Council and to the increasingly lively prospect of interesting horizons in the current canonical and ecclesiological reflection.

Abstract:
This paper talks about two dimensions of Church-reality: divine and human, defined by the Second Vatican Council (1962-1965) as People of God. The church is divine because it has its origin in God and human because God swill is manifested in the hearts and minds of the people. We focus our thinking, especially about the relevance and challenge of the sensus fidei in the dogmatic Constitution Lumen Gentium of Vatican II. The divine plan is Yes of God s unconditional love, offered to humanity, and faith of the human being is amen of his spontaneous opening, the inner attitude of surrender to grace. The awareness of faith is the necessary road, the core element of the construction and constitution of union communial and communication relationship of humanity with each other, the cosmos and with God. The reality of non-ordained people and their experience of God in the post-Vatican II became for the new scenarios of the Church. Besides the diverse attitudes towards the reception of the Council, there are also various interpretations of approaches of the post-conciliar Church. Our research aims to analyze the constitutive element (sensus fidei) of the Church, using theological sources, such as: Holy Scripture, Tradition and Church Magisterium.

Thesis, Strasbourg, 2014. http://www.theses.fr/2014STRAK002/document.

Full text
Abstract:
This work is a theological reflection on supplying canonical notion. Supplying is restricted to executive power of governance (can. 144). Hence we study the link between supplying process and "potestas sacra" and the application requirements to laypersons. We make an inventory of some cases in which the salvation of souls is bound. Their theological analysis establishes an ecclesiology of the exception from the saying : necessitas non habet legem, the membership of Church and the status of some ecclesial communities. The subsistit in and the notion of communion are clarifying. The ecclesiology of the exception is the proper field of supplying process which also occurs into the Institution through sensus fidei and charismas. Hence a reappraisal of the adage : « no salvation outside the Church ». Supplying process is an hermeneutical criterion useful to exegesis (Galatians : Paul’s place) and history (Tertullian, Cyprian : lack of potestas sacra as irreducible limit of suppletory exercise)

Família Cristã magazine has started in Italy as an important vehicle to accomplish the dream of Saint Paul´s Society´s Founder who wanted to spread the Gospel all over the world by using modern media. The magazine was founded in Brazil in 1934. In its beginning it was only a leaflet, but to-day it is one of the most spread magazines that propagate religion and Catholicism in Brazil. In the magazine, we outlined the object of our research, by focusing the matters of the Section Cultura Popular (Popular Culture) in the years 1980 and 1981. After an introduction about Saint Paul´s Society, its Founder and about the origin and evolution of the magazine in Italy and in Brazil, we described the Section and commented the topics that disclose the catholic popular culture and religion. Then we organized the subjects in five themes: devotions, folklore and folkloric rhythms, myths of popular faith, pilgrimages, and saints. Based on theoretical references, we analyzed the aspects of the popular religiosity that appear in the matters. The magazine´s purpose is to describe and to expose the subjects without special intention of analyzing and commenting them. However, in our research, we found a richness of themes for religious studies. The religious atmosphere of the matters may be red in the light of Puebla´s Conference description of catholic popular religiosity. The subjects we studied gave chance to point out a rich repertory of cultural, religious and existential values of the popular religiosity that indicate concretely and deeply the encounter of the divine and the human life, that goes further than the ritual manifestations and creates a peculiar vision of the world, the so called sensus fidei that makes the sacred always present in all aspects of life
Abstract:
The benefits of Receptive Ecumenism are becoming increasingly appreciated within ecumenical circles. A primary focus is the way a particular Christian tradition can learn from another and, in a mutual exchange of gifts, receive gifts that have not been part of one’s own tradition. This chapter views this dynamic in terms of recognizing differing ‘senses of the faith’ that the Holy Spirit has brought forth within the baptized of different churches. It proposes that Catholic discernment of the sensus fidelium, as presupposed in Lumen Gentium 12, should also include the sensus fidei of other Christians, and that ecumenical dialogues play a crucial role in that ecclesial discernment.

Abstract:
With its focus on the pathos of permanence versus temporality as human aporia and on the function — the Werksein — of the work of art genuinely encountered, John Keats’s Ode on a Grecian Urn is a particularly compelling subject for philosophical analysis. The major explications of this most contentiously debated ode in the language have largely focused, however, on various combinations of the poem’s stylistic, structural, linguistic, psychological, aesthetic, historical, symbolic, and intellectual-biographical elements. My paper articulates a bona fide philosophical approach to the ode’s famously controversial fifth stanza (the one containing the Urn’s declaration: "Beauty is truth, truth beauty"). I demonstrate how William Desmond’s metaphysics of Being-specifically his analysis of the univocal, equivocal, dialectical, and metaxological senses of being-affords the groundwork for a "hermeneutics of the between" that elucidates the ode’s culminating stanza with all of the cogency and nuance that one would expect to derive from a systematic ontology.

Abstract:
This chapter opens the second part of the book on humor competence (chapters 6-9). This chapter introduces Raskin’s semantic theory of humor competence based on scripts (Semantic-Script Theory of Humor, SSTH). The concept of script (or frame) is introduced. Dynamic scripts (i.e., scripts that are updated with new informatiom) are described as well as the mechanics of combinations of word senses and disambiguation. The two conditions for a text to be a joke are described: 1) two scripts must be opposite, and 2) they must overlap fully or in part, i.e., be compatible with (parts of) the text. The pragmatic aspects of the SSTH are also discussed, with the idea of non-bona-fide communication, i.e., communication not entirely focused on cooperative (in the Gricean sense) communication. Finally, the recent development of Ontological semantics and its application to humor is discussed.

Abstract:
The idea that metaphors can serve an explanatory function, or that they can carry any theoretical weight, has raised the hackles of philosophers of science from Hempel onward. But there seem to be bona fide cases of explanatory metaphors in science. This chapter sketches an account of explanation, grounded in the connection between explanation and understanding. It discusses some potential arguments for this account and shows how it allows us to make sense of the idea that metaphors can explain. The chapter illustrates these ideas by looking at the case of informational metaphors in cell biology.

Abstract:
After the election of the socialist party in 1982, relations between Spain and Cuba entered a channel of greater understanding, as the two nation's traditional commercial and economic relationship found a complementary association in the greater political affinity between Felipe González and Fidel Castro. In the international context, the Cuban leaders had their own vision of the role that Spain might play on the international stage and sensed the possibilities that the young Spanish democracy could open up for the Third World. For Spain there was a need to maintain a neutral international orientation and remain detached from the military pacts with the great powers. This chapter explores Cuba and the United States in the configuration of a foreign policy for Spain.

Abstract:
This chapter documents the emergence of a bona fide “border crisis” in the Eastern Sahara in the decade prior to the Italian occupation of Ottoman Libya. Through a nuanced investigation of a range of primary sources, the chapter illustrates the interactive and multilayered process through which a sharper sense of borderland territorialization—a sense of there being distinctive Libyan and Ottoman territorial spheres—emerged in these pivotal years. Bedouin spatial practices were again central, drawing the Ottoman and Egyptian states deeper into political-diplomatic rivalry, while the Italian state seized upon the instability caused by the bedouin unrest to stake its own territorial claims. In this decade of heated inter-imperial rivalry and contestation, Egyptian sovereign capabilities emerged as ascendant in the region, to the deep chagrin of local Ottoman officials.

Abstract:
The university work influences many areas of society: It generates jobs and influences employers; it is related to both internal and external publics; it takes part in economic processes and in local and regional decision-making process. This chapter presents a concrete case of a mission-driven approach in modern business education: the Social Business Guidance Service (SBGS), a service-learning structure created at a business school. The SBGS comprises a practical dimension (utilitas) because students have to apply their professional knowledge to concrete managerial problems; a social dimension (iustitia) as this service is concerned with organizations working with excluded people and other related problems. It also has a humanist approach (humanitas) as allow students meet people different from their lifestyles, people who often have real problems to foster their living (economic, stigma, social inclusion). Finally, there is a spiritual dimension (fides), as invite students to reflect on the sense of their acts.

"Laura Limonic, Kugel and Frijoles: Latino Jews in the United States. Detroit: Wayne State University Press, 2019. 264 pp." In No Small Matter, edited by Anat Helman, 297–98. Oxford University Press, 2021. http://dx.doi.org/10.1093/oso/9780197577301.003.0031.

Abstract:
This chapter assesses Laura Limonic's Kugel and Frijoles: Latino Jews in the United States (2019). This sociological study focuses on Latinx Jews who have migrated to the United States since 1965, largely from Argentina, Mexico, and Venezuela. Limonic establishes that the earlier migration of Cuban Jews to Miami in the early 1960s created a precedent for other Latin American Jews to search for a new home and a new sense of identity as “Latino Jews” in the United States. Fleeing the turn to Communism after Fidel Castro came to power in 1959, thousands of Cuban Jews arrived in Miami hoping to be welcomed into the American Jewish communal and religious institutions of the day. Instead, they discovered that their Cubanness made their Jewishness suspect at a time when multiculturalism was not yet in vogue. As a result, they had to build their own religious and social spaces, constructing an Ashkenazi synagogue, the Cuban Hebrew Congregation of Miami, and a Sephardic synagogue, Temple Moses.
