Abstract:
Public opinion and religious opinion are located within plural societies, connected to social networks. The experience of the phenomenon of public opinion by the believers interacts with the experience of religious opinions. What are the mediations employed by the sensus fidelium to explain the contradictions between public and religious opinion? This article discusses the proximity between public and religious opinions through the categories of publicity, contradiction, utility and truth. In networked societies, the faithful exercise the right to express their opinions and religious convictions. The phenomenon of the sensus fidelium immediately evidences the experience of faith of the believers as subjective convictions and religious opinions. Afterwards, these opinions are mediated by the collegiate spheres of the Church, expressing the coherence of the belief, that is, its truth. The proximity between public and religious opinions points to more complex scenarios for the Church and the believers.

Abstract:
The benefits of the approach of “receptive ecumenism” are becoming increasingly appreciated within ecumenical circles. A primary focus is the way a particular Christian tradition can learn from another and, in a mutual exchange of gifts, receive gifts that have not been part of one’s own tradition. This essay views this dynamic in terms of recognizing differing “senses of the faith” that the Holy Spirit has brought forth within the baptized of different churches. It proposes that Catholic discernment of the sensus fidelium, as presupposed in Lumen Gentium 12, should also include the sensus fidei of other Christians, and that ecumenical dialogues play a crucial role in that ecclesial discernment.

Abstract:
More than fifty years ago Pope John XXIII convoked the Second Vatican Council to which about 2,500 bishops were invited from all over the world. It was at this Council, and in its reception over the years, that the sensus fidelium was re-discovered as an ecclesial reality and a theological insight that has characterized the Church since its inception. The central question of this study is how the sensus fidelium is expressed and received in the Church, and how the 1983 Code of Canon Law can help in its expression and reception. This study investigates the complex and varied ways through which the sensus fidelium is sought out, brought to expression, received and listened to in the Church. The study sets out to address questions such as: What truly is the sensus fidelium? When you look at the Church, where can you see the expression and reception of the sensus fidelium? Where in the Church can you see a practical manifestation of the sensus fidelium? Who are the people in the Church that constitute the sensus fidelium? What are the canonical structures in the Church that aid the expression and reception of the sensus fidelium as envisioned by the Conciliar Fathers? Addressing these questions will help the members of the faithful and the whole Church to integrate and apply to life the ecclesial and theological insight of the sensus fidelium as envisioned by the Conciliar Fathers. The study addresses the above questions in the light of the 1983 Code of Canon Law. In other words, the study investigates the ecclesial and theological insight of the sensus fidelium, highlighting particularly, how the canonical norms and structures of the 1983 Code of Canon Law aid its expression and reception in the Church. The study identifies the lay faithful, deacons, religious men and women, priests, theologians, canon lawyers, bishops, the Roman Pontiff and cardinals, as "agents" of the sensus fidelium - that is, people involved in aiding its ongoing expression and reception in the Church. It is proposed that these agents, together with canonical structures such as the parish pastoral council, the finance council, the presbyteral council and the college of consultors, the diocesan curia, the visit ad limina Apostolorum, the diocesan synod, the episcopal conferences and synods, the Roman Curia, ecumenical dialogues and the canonical institute of custom, are structures of the sensus fidelium and - when used to their fullest potential - can be useful instruments for the expression and reception of the sensus fidelium in the Church. The study argues that, for a fuller and richer expression and reception of the sensus fidelium to be realized, the agents and structures of the sensus fidelium must be used to their fullest potential. In order to do this, certain theological-applicative principles which promote unity and love, adequate consultation and receptive dialogue between the hierarchy and the people of God as a whole, must be borne in mind and integrated into the life of the faithful: the principle of the ecclesial image of "the people of God", the hierarchical principle, the principle of fundamental equality and dignity of all the faithful, the principle of sacramentality, the principle of communio, the pneumatological principle, the principle of receptive dialogue among the faithful. This study will highlight how all members of the faithful participate in and constitute the sensus fidelium, and how canonical norms and structures of the Code helps to promote and protect their involvement in the expression and reception of the sensus fidelium in the Church.

Abstract:

This dissertation inquires into the necessity, process, and structure of the bishop's discernment of the local church's sensus fidelium. As an authentic source of saving knowledge of God such that its reception brings union with God and others, the sensus fidelium ought to be a source for episcopal teaching. In his reception of the sensus fidelium, the bishop continues to learn and to be transformed by the apostolic faith, and is in turn better able to teach the faith with authority. If the bishop's reception of the sensus fidelium is integral to his ability to teach the apostolic faith in an authoritative manner, then the orthopraxis of that reception is of great importance. One aspect of that orthopraxis is the bishop's discernment of the sensus fidelium. As a ministerial habitus, discernment has implications both for the bishop's personal transformation and for his ability to place his spirituality at the service of the apostolate. The Spiritual Exercises of Ignatius of Loyola and the structures of the Society of Jesus are employed as a comparative model of discernment. The Spiritual Exercises offers a way of viewing discernment as a virtue that develops one's capacity for both reception from and union with God and others. Discernment in the Society of Jesus is undertaken to foster unity of understanding and purpose at the service of the Society's apostolate. Structures promoting discernment and relating spirituality to authority provide insights into how discernment may be developed within the larger church. Chapter One indicates that the bishop's discernment must become a virtue, that is, it must both be continually undertaken and personally transformative of his own capacity to know and respond to the Holy Spirit. Further, it must take into account in a positive and constructive manner other sources of authority, or of knowing God, within the church's historical context. Chapter Two analyzes the virtues and structures currently considered normative for the bishop's ministry in the local church. While ecclesial documents encourage dialogue, spirituality, and various virtues to aid the bishop's ministry, they leave undeveloped a coherent description of the relationship between discernment and the bishop's spirituality and authority, and do not sufficiently address the bishop's formation by the sensus fidelium of the local church. In order to better realize the ideals offered by these documents and to more sufficiently conceive how the bishop comes to personally symbolize the local church, Chapter Three and Chapter Four present the spirituality of the Spiritual Exercises and structures of the Society of Jesus. Chapter Five then constructs a model of episcopal discernment in the context of communion ecclesiology and in light of the insights of the Jesuit tradition in order to demonstrate how elements of Ignatian spirituality and Jesuit institutional structures may either illuminate episcopal self-understanding and practice or be adapted to the advantage of dialogical discernment within the local church

A number of theologians claim that the church has not tapped into the fullness of Vatican II’s teaching on the sensus fidelium. As an attempt to address that concern, this thesis examines the teaching authority of the laity as a key element of the sensus fidelium in the church. It argues for a fuller realization of Vatican II’s emphasis on the laity’s participation in Christ’s prophetic office. It proposes a three-part lay hermeneutic (hermeneutic of everyday life, hermeneutic of desire, and hermeneutic of trust) as a relevant, authoritative framework for discerning the sensus fidelium. This thesis employs a method that is primarily critical, hermeneutical and practical. It is structured in three chapters. Chapter One offers a comprehensive theology of the sensus fidelium. Chapter Two focuses on the laity, their sense of the faith and the process through which they receive the faith. Chapter Three presents a vision of church that is attentive to the teaching authority of the laity. Through an analysis of the laity’s sensus fidei as an integral dimension in the discernment of the sensus fidelium, this thesis emphasizes that authority in the church derives from all its members and that the interpretation of faith is a process that invites the participation of all the baptized as sharers in Christ’s prophetic function. In such a church, the laity and ordained together equally belong to the guild of interpreters of God’s revelation. Consequently, the laity possess a teaching authority that contributes significantly to the life of the church

It proposes a three-part lay hermeneutic (hermeneutic of everyday life, hermeneutic of desire, and hermeneutic of trust) as a relevant, authoritative framework for discerning the sensus fidelium, of which Filipino popular Catholicism is a living expression. This dissertation employs a method that is primarily critical, hermeneutical and practical. It is structured in two parts: the first two chapters establish the theological underpinnings of the study, while the last three chapters focus on the laity, their sense of the faith, their reception process, their lived faith expressed through popular Catholicism, and their participation in the prophetic office of Christ. Through an analysis of the laity’s sensus fidei as an integral dimension in the discernment of the sensus fidelium, this dissertation emphasizes that authority in the church derives from all its members and that the interpretation of faith is a process that invites the participation of all the baptized as sharers in Christ’s prophetic function. PAPA, ANTONIO FABRIZIO. "IL COLLEGIO EPISCOPALE COME RAPPRESENTAZIONE DINAMICA IN FORMA DI RELAZIONI GIURIDICHE." Doctoral thesis, Università Cattolica del Sacro Cuore, 2021. http://hdl.handle.net/10280/96573.

Abstract:
The present work has the scientific aim of endowing with an adequate juridical dogmatics the complex reality that is constituted by the configuration of the internal relations of the College of Bishops, advancing also in the understanding of the intrinsically communitarian aspect of the episcopal office as a result of the relationship of unitary succession to the apostolic office of divine law. By interpreting the belonging to the College of those members who make it up uti universi through the fundamental ecclesiological value of their sacramental insertion in the "symbolism of the Twelve" (chapter I), one arrives at configuring the group of those who are united in the episcopal ministry in terms of "universitas collegialis personarum inaequali iure" (chapter III), demonstrating - starting precisely from the terminological question of "collegium" (chapter II) - how it is possible to give rise to increasingly pregnant reflections on the contribution that theological thought provides for the purposes of structuring, also juridically, the empirical internal normative character of the Church. In this way, it will be easier to identify the relationships between those nuclei of meaning that have led, in the Catholic sphere, both to a new development and enhancement (theoretical and practical) of the doctrine of episcopal collegiality within the Second Vatican Council and to the increasingly lively prospect of interesting horizons in the current canonical and ecclesiological reflection.

Abstract:
AbstractThe sense of touch plays a strong role in the perception of the properties and characteristics of hollow objects. The action of shaking a hollow container to get an insight of its content is a natural and common interaction. In this paper, we present a multi-modal rendering approach for the simulation of virtual moving objects inside a hollow container, based on the combination of haptic and audio cues generated by voice-coils actuators and high-fidelity headphones, respectively. We conducted a user study. Thirty participants were asked to interact with a target cylindrical hollow object and estimate the number of moving objects inside, relying on haptic feedback only, audio feedback only, or a combination of both. Results indicate that the combination of various senses is important in the perception of the content of a container.

Abstract:
AbstractThis chapter presents the technique route of model updating in the presence of imprecise probabilities. The emphasis is put on the inevitable uncertainties, in both numerical simulations and experimental measurements, leading the updating methodology to be significantly extended from deterministic sense to stochastic sense. This extension requires that the model parameters are not regarded as unknown-but-fixed values, but random variables with uncertain distributions, i.e. the imprecise probabilities. The final objective of stochastic model updating is no longer a single model prediction with maximal fidelity to a single experiment, but rather the calibrated distribution coefficients allowing the model predictions to fit with the experimental measurements in a probabilistic point of view. The involvement of uncertainty within a Bayesian updating framework is achieved by developing a novel uncertainty quantification metric, i.e. the Bhattacharyya distance, instead of the typical Euclidian distance. The overall approach is demonstrated by solving the model updating sub-problem of the NASA uncertainty quantification challenge. The demonstration provides a clear comparison between performances of the Euclidian distance and the Bhattacharyya distance, and thus promotes a better understanding of the principle of stochastic model updating, as no longer to determine the unknown-but-fixed parameters, but rather to reduce the uncertainty bounds of the model prediction and meanwhile to guarantee the existing experimental data to be still enveloped within the updated uncertainty space.

Abstract:
AbstractThe extensive deployment of sensors in oilfield operation and management has led to the collection of vast amounts of data, which in turn has enabled the use of machine learning models to improve decision-making. One of the prime applications of data-based decision-making is the identification of optimum well locations for hydrocarbon recovery. This task is made difficult by the relative lack of high-fidelity data regarding the subsurface to develop precise models in support of decision-making. Each well placement decision not only affects eventual recovery but also the decisions affecting future wells. Hence, there exists a tradeoff between recovery maximization and information gain. Existing methodologies for placement of wells during the early phases of reservoir development fail to take an abiding view of maximizing reservoir profitability, instead focusing on short-term gains. While improvements in drilling technologies have dramatically lowered the costs of producing hydrocarbon from prospects and resulted in very efficient drilling operations, these advancements have led to sub-optimal and haphazard placement of wells. This can lead to considerable number of unprofitable wells being drilled which, during periods of low oil and gas prices, can be detrimental for a company’s solvency. The goal of the research is to present a methodology that builds machine learning models, integrating geostatistics and reservoir flow dynamics, to determine optimum future well locations for maximizing reservoir recovery. A deep reinforcement learning (DRL) framework has been proposed to address the issue of long-horizon decision-making. The DRL reservoir agent employs intelligent sampling and utilizes a reward framework that is based on geostatistical and flow simulations. The implemented approach provides opportunities to insert expert information while basing well placement decisions on data collected from seismic data and prior well tests. Effects of prior information on the well placement decisions are explored and the developed DRL derived policies are compared to single-stage optimization methods for reservoir development. Under similar reward framework, sequential well placement strategies developed using DRL have been shown to perform better than simultaneous drilling of several wells.

Abstract:
Wired sensor systems are currently used to monitor the performance and health of electric motors. Since the sensors need to be wired, these systems can only use few sensor modalities which are generally insufficient to detect the wide range of faults in motors. Wireless sensors, on the other hand, allow access to sensors mounted in accessible locations and on rotating parts. They are easy to install and maintain. However, the reliability of the transmission due to electromagnetic interference and the fidelity of the data due to high winding temperatures inside the motor need to be examined. This paper studies the feasibility of wireless sensors inside a 200hp AC induction motor. Two wireless sensors are attached inside the motor — one on the stator frame and one on the rotating shaft. A wired sensor is attached on the outside of the stator frame to study the fidelity of data from the wireless sensor. The packet delivery performance as a function of spatial location in terms of direction and distance with respect to the base station and the fidelity of data received by the base station are studied. The results show that an average of 97% and 87.9% of the data from the wireless sensor attached on the stator frame and shaft respectively is received at the base station, thus showing that wireless sensors can be reliably used inside the motor.

Abstract:
The performance of machines and equipment degrades as a result of aging and wear. This decreases performance reliability and increases the potential for faults and failures. To ensure proper functionality of complex systems, advanced technologies for performance diagnosis and control are being incorporated into engineering designs, which requires an ever-increasing number of sensors and measurement devices. Nevertheless, a sensor, just as any other dynamic system, degrades and fails. A faulty sensor may cause process performance degradation, process shut down, or even a fatal accident because it is no longer able to deliver accurate information about the monitored system. Therefore, it is essential to assess sensor performance to ensure system reliability. In this paper, a method is proposed to detect, isolate, and compensate sensor degradation. The numerical algorithm for subspace state space system identification is used to track the changes of the time constants and gains of the sensor and the monitored system. Without imposing requirements for redundant sensors and measurement devices, this method utilizes the fact that sensor readings depict dynamic characteristics of the sensors as well as those of the monitored system. The newly proposed method is verified in angular sensor degradation detection using high-fidelity simulations of an automotive electronic throttle system.

Abstract:
A steady-state multicopter simulation capability leveraging automated Cartesian grid generation and a blade element source term rotor model was used to investigate multi-rotor aerodynamics in and out of ground effect. Simulations demonstrated that this model is able to predict reasonably accurate thrust in ground effect for both single and multiple propeller cases. The method yielded accurate lift and drag predictions for a commercial quadcopter when compared to recent wind tunnel test data. This aircraft was then simulated in a variety of flight conditions, including both hover and edgewise forward flight, to determine if generalized guidelines for airborne sensor placement could be developed. Velocity perturbation contours showed regions of affected air upstream of the vehicle at low speeds which contracted as the aircraft's speed was increased. Placing the sensors more than one characteristic length ahead of or above the aircraft reduces errors from rotor-induced flow at higher speeds. For low-speed forward flight, the entrainment of flow into the propeller wakes introduces significant flow turning above the aircraft, suggesting that a forward location, where the perturbations are more moderate, could be advantageous for these conditions.

Abstract:
We present a novel high fidelity 3-D simulator that significantly reduces the sim-to-real gap for collision avoidance in dense crowds using Deep Reinforcement Learning (DRL). Our simulator models realistic crowd and pedestrian behaviors, along with friction, sensor noise and delays in the simulated robot model. We also describe a technique to incrementally control the randomness and complexity of training scenarios to achieve better convergence and generalization capabilities. We demonstrate the effectiveness of our simulator by training a policy that fuses data from multiple perception sensors such as a 2-D lidar and a depth camera to detect pedestrians and computes smooth, collision-free velocities. Our novel reward function and multi-sensor formulation results in smooth and unobtrusive navigation. We have evaluated the learned policy on two differential drive robots and evaluate its performance in new dense crowd scenarios, narrow corridors, T and L-junctions, etc. We observe that our algorithm outperforms prior dynamic navigation techniques in terms of metrics such as success rate, trajectory length, mean time to goal, and smoothness.

Abstract:
Abstract Large methane emissions occur from a wide variety of sites with no discernable patterns thus requiring methodologies to frequently monitor for these releases throughout the entire production chain. To cost-effectively monitor widely dispersed well pads, we describe a continuous monitoring system based on the Internet of Things (IoT) to leverage cost-optimized methane concentration sensors permanently deployed at facilities and connected to a cloud-based interpretation platform. Testing at controlled methane release facilities enabled the validation of the sensor performance; fidelity of the atmospheric dispersion modeling underlying our interpretation; and the overall system performance in detecting, localizing, and quantifying methane releases.
