Abstract:
The Hayling Sentence Competion Test (HSCT) consists of two sections and measures response initiation and inhibitory control. In the first section subjects are instructed to produce a single word to complete a sentence and in the response inhibition condition subjects are instructed to produce a contextually unconnected word. Several studies evidence that these abilities, which are associated with frontal lobe dysfunction and dysexecutive symptoms in evereyday life (Burgess & Shallice, 1996b), are impaired in psychiatric patients particularly in patients with schizophenia and major depression (Gohier et al., 2009; Chan et al., 2010; Joshua et al., 2009). The present study aims to examine the adapted German version of the HSCT by Willinger and Diendorfer (2009) upon a non-clinical sample and its relationship to Stroop-Test. The sample was composed of 74 adults (36 women and 38 men) ranging in age from 19 to 66. Reliability analyses of the HSCT yielded a Cronbachs's alpha of 0.45 (response initiation), and 0.92 (response inhibition). Correlation analyses between Stroop Cards 1 and 2 and HSCT initiation condition showed a medium effect (r = 0.378; p = 0.001), further correlation analyses indicated no assocation between Stroop Card 3 and HSCT inhibition condition (r = 0.070; p = 0.560). The high reliability regarding response inhibition seems to be promising. Further investigations considering executive functions such as word fluency are necessary.

Abstract:
The task of sentence completion, which aims to infer the missing text of a given sentence, was carried out to assess the reading comprehension level of machines as well as humans. In this work, we conducted a comprehensive study of various approaches for the sentence completion based on neural language models, which have been advanced in recent years. First, we revisited the recurrent neural network language model (RNN LM), achieving highly competitive results with an appropriate network structure and hyper-parameters. This paper presents a bidirectional version of RNN LM, which surpassed the previous best results on Microsoft Research (MSR) Sentence Completion Challenge and the Scholastic Aptitude Test (SAT) sentence completion questions. In parallel with directly applying RNN LM to sentence completion, we also employed a supervised learning framework that fine-tunes a large pre-trained transformer-based LM with a few sentence-completion examples. By fine-tuning a pre-trained BERT model, this work established state-of-the-art results on the MSR and SAT sets. Furthermore, we performed similar experimentation on newly collected cloze-style questions in the Korean language. The experimental results reveal that simply applying the multilingual BERT models for the Korean dataset was not satisfactory, which leaves room for further research.

Abstract:
Background: The goal of our project is to assess the feasibility of replacing the invasive Wada test considered as the gold standard with non-invasive fMRI test for assessment of language dominance preoperatively. Methods: fMRI test with three language paradigm tasks (verb generation, sentence completion and naming) were conducted on our cohort of patients. fMRI laterality indices (LI) were then defined as a ratio (L-R)/(L+R) between the number of activated voxels in the left and right ROIs for Anterior Language Area (ALA) and Posterior Language Area (PLA). fMRI results were divided into the right (LI < -0.2), left (LI > 0.2) or bilateral (-0.2 < LI <0.2) hemispheric language dominance and compared to the results of the Wada test. Results: 28 patients were studied. The concordance rate between Wada and fMRI tests for the ALA and PLA was 68.2% and 52.2% for sentence completion; 56% and 52% for verb generation and 25% and 35% for naming paradigm, respectively. Conclusions: Sentence completion and verb generation fMRI paradigms showed higher concordance with Wada test than naming paradigm. The higher discordance between the Wada test and fMRI was related to bilateral results suggestive of less stringent thresholds used for either test.

Erasmus, Cathariena Petronella. "The role of emotional intelligence in the adaptation of adolescent boys in a private school." Diss., 2007. http://hdl.handle.net/10500/2203.

Full text
Abstract:
The lack of emotional intelligence can be linked to problem behaviour in adolescent boys between 14 and 18 years of age. The concepts of emotions, emotional intelligence, adolescents and adaptation formed the focal point of this research. Profiles were compiled from data obtained from the Q-metrics emotional intelligence questionnaire, the Sacks Sentence Completion Test, an unstructured interview and the projection media (Draw a person). Detailed information with regards to risk and protective factors for each adolescent boy were provided. The above techniques and measuring instruments provided a holistic picture of the adolescent's level of emotional functioning as well as hypotheses for future therapy. The importance of the father-son relationship in the adolescent years was stressed. Early identification of adolescent boys in a private school (with low levels of emotional development) enables the school to implement programmes aimed at developing emotional intelligence.

Abstract:
Fuzzy logic is widely applied to daily life with various methods. One method is fuzzy multi-attribute decision making (FMADM). FMADM is able to select the best alternative from a number of alternatives. In FMADM there is a supporting method so that the results obtained are accurate and optimal, namely the classic MADM method. One method in classic MADM is the Simple Additive Weighting (SAW) method. The SAW method is precisely used to minimize diagnostic errors, but if a decision support system is made, the SAW method still requires a further development method, one of which is the FMADM method with its development. The purposes of this study are to describe the steps of SAW method and the development of FDM in theory, implement SAW method and the development of FDM to diagnose a type of disease and implement it in a decision support system using GUI matlab. The completion step of those two methods is through two stages, the first one will go through FMADM stage with SAW, which is weighted sum, then the output will be used as input to the FDM method based on total integral values. The result of this study is proven by patient experienced initial symptoms of high fever at a temperature of 39.5° C - 40° C, very much spots appear in rumple leed test (> 50 petheciae), bleeding gums, rarely got nausea and headache, as well as diarrhea. Accuracy for the decision support system using MAPE was obtained 93% so that the decision support system with FMADM method to diagnose the disease was feasible to use.

Abstract:
The IRIS (International Reactor Innovative and Secure) project has completed the conceptual design phase and is moving towards completion of the preliminary design, scheduled for the end of 2002. Several other papers presented in this conference provide details on major aspects of the IRIS design. The three most innovative features which uniquely characterize IRIS are, in descending order of impact: 1. Safety-by-design, which takes maximum advantage of the integral configuration to eliminate from consideration some accidents, greatly lessen the consequence of other accident scenarios and decrease their probability of occurring; 2. Optimized maintenance, where the interval between maintenance shutdowns is extended to 48 months; and 3. Long core life, of at least four years without shuffling or partial refueling. Regarding feature 1, design and analyses will be supplemented by an extensive testing campaign to verify and demonstrate the performance of the integral components, individually as well as interactive systems. Test planning is being initiated. Test results will be factored into PRA analyses under an overall risk informed regulation approach, which is planned to be used in the IRIS licensing. Pre-application activities with NRC are also scheduled to start in mid 2002. Regarding feature 2, effort is being focused on advanced online diagnostics for the integral components, first of all the steam generators, which are the most critical component; several techniques are being investigated. Finally, a four year long life core design is well underway and some of the IRIS team members are examining higher enrichment, eight to ten year life cores which could be considered for reloads.

Abstract:
The Arnold Engineering Development Center (AEDC) testing complex includes more than 50 wind tunnels, test cells, arc heaters, and other specialized test facilities. Of these, 27 units have capabilities that are unmatched in the United States, and 14 are unmatched in the world. These unique facilities pose equally unique testing challenges, including several related to test preparation. A dynamic strain measurement system feasibility demonstrator for turbine engine ground testing applications was developed as the product of a Small Business Innovative Research (SBIR) phase 1 contract. System specifications include 40 kHz minimum bandwidth, 0–65°C operating temperature, IEEE-1451 (“smart sensor plug and play”) compliance, and synchronized sampling per IEEE-1588. The transducer interface for each channel features hardware-configurable bridge completion, an instrumentation amplifier, a remotely configurable antialiasing filter, and a combined A-D/microcontroller on a 5 square inch circuit board. The A-D/microcontroller stores essential transducer information locally and converts the amplified analog signal into digital data. The network interface from 12 transducer channels to the host computer comprises an FPGA and a microprocessor with integral IEEE-1588. Data systems of this type will reduce engine test cell wiring to control room, improve noise immunity, reduce engine installation time, enable faster calibration, and reduce per channel instrumentation cost.
