Abstract:
Two dominant lineages of T cells (αβ and γδ T cells) are highly distinct in function and anatomical location yet share a common precursor within the thymus. Exactly how one cell fate is decided over another remains unresolved. Melichar et al. present evidence that selection to the γδ T cell branch in the thymus is controlled by the transcription factor SOX13, which supports and possibly even initiates γδ T cell development while opposing differentiation of their αβ T cell brethren. The authors noted that SOX13 inhibited an important effector of the central T cell developmental signaling pathway mediated by the Wnt protein. H. J. Melichar, K. Narayan, S. D. Der, Y. Hiraoka, N. Abstract:
Amoebae of the cellular slime mould Dictyostelium discoideum at 8 h or 10 h development were separated into two populations by countercurrent distribution in a dextran-poly(ethylene glycol), two-phase system. Two-dimensional, polyacrylamide-gel electrophoresis was then used to separate the polypeptides from the populations of amoebae. The two populations of amoebae at 8 h development differed sn polypeptide composition as did the populations separated at 10 h development. This confirms that cell differentiation is initated in D. discoideum prior to 8 h development.

Abstract:
It is a common argument by now that the modern mass media and the music they disseminate have been ‘used by economically and politically powerful interests within the state to support the capitalist relations of production and to legitimise the social, economic and political organisation of society’ (Tomaselli et al. 1986, p. 19). Criticism directed more specifically at radio has focused chiefly on capitalist societies in which there are multiple channels of entertainment and information. A recent issue of the present journal devoted to radio, for instance, was concerned only with the UK, Canada, and the USA (Popular Music, 9/2, 1990). Little critical attention has been focused on the use of radio to ‘legitimise the social, economic and political organisation of society’ in countries in which the state assumes full control over programming and transmission.

Abstract:
ABSTRACT We have developed DNA microarray techniques for studyingCorynebacterium glutamicum. A set of 52 C. glutamicum genes encoding enzymes from primary metabolism was amplified by PCR and printed in triplicate onto glass slides. Total RNA was extracted from cells harvested during the exponential-growth and lysine production phases of a C. glutamicum fermentation. Fluorescently labeled cDNAs were prepared by reverse transcription using random hexamer primers and hybridized to the microarrays. To establish a set of benchmark metrics for this technique, we compared the variability between replicate spots on the same slide, between slides hybridized with cDNAs from the same labeling reaction, and between slides hybridized with cDNAs prepared in separate labeling reactions. We found that the results were both robust and statistically reproducible. Spot-to-spot variability was 3.8% between replicate spots on a given slide, 5.0% between spots on separate slides (though hybridized with identical, labeled cDNA), and 8.1% between spots from separate slides hybridized with samples from separate reverse transcription reactions yielding an average spot to spot variability of 7.1% across all conditions. Furthermore, when we examined the changes in gene expression that occurred between the two phases of the fermentation, we found that results for the majority of the genes agreed with observations made using other methods. These procedures will be a valuable addition to the metabolic engineering toolbox for the improvement of C. glutamicum amino acid-producing strains.

Abstract:
The number of private households in Canada surged in the 1970s; at the same time, rental housing was becoming more affordable. Then, in the first half of the 1980s, affordability declined and household formation slowed. Were these changes in household formation attributable to changing affordability? In this paper, a model is estimated by means of logistic regression, in which the living arrangement of a family (or a nonfamily adult) is a choice made on the basis of the income and other characteristics of the family (or adult), and the price of maintaining one's own dwelling. In the model current income is partitioned into expected and transitory components, indicators of income expectations are included, and the endogeneity of living arrangement and income is considered. Income variables are measured in terms of the units of standard rental housing that the family or individual can purchase. The model is estimated empirically by using pooled data drawn from the 1981 Census and 1986 Census public-use samples. The estimation is comprehensive in coverage; separate model estimates are presented for up to 44 distinct pools of consumers defined by age, sex, family status, and income. Estimates derived from the model show that affordability had an effect on living arrangement that, although often statistically significant, was numerically small and that declining affordability does not predict well changes in living arrangement in metropolitan Canada for 1981 and 1986.

Abstract:
Distinct processes involved in memory development were explored by obtaining separate measures of preschoolers’ and college students’ use of familiarity and conscious recollection in picture recognition. In each of two testing sessions (separated by one week; with different video materials), participants viewed pictures in the context of hearing a story. Further phases of the experimental procedure were based on process dissociation, a methodology that provides separate estimates of the contributions of conscious recollection and familiarity. Consistent with existing literature on separate implicit and explicit tasks, the results revealed a reliable difference between preschoolers and adults for measures of conscious recollection. In contrast, but also consistent with past research with implicit memory tasks, no developmental differences were observed for familiarity estimates. Results were discussed in the context of controversy regarding the best procedures for measuring different memory processes.

Abstract:
Abstract This paper introduces a 3D woven fabric-based approach for the development of pressure switch. A fabric substrate, being elastic and extendable is very useful in addition to its high breaking strength and low cost. The developed resistive-type switch is based on the multilayer interlock 3D fabrics. In the top and bottom layers, certain number of conductive yarns are woven separated by cotton yarns in both transversal and thickness direction. Application of pressure makes the layers of conductive yarn to come in contact, resulting in a short circuit, which may be recorded using multi-meters. Removing the pressure cause the connection points to separate away and it depends on the weave design. Such switch can be used as an on/off switch for usage in security systems, can be sewn into carpets and wearable garments for a number of purposes.

Abstract:
For decades there have been calls for psychiatric services to be more culturally competent. Frustration with a perceived slow pace of change has led to the development of separate services. For instance, in the USA, San Francisco General Hospital has psychiatric wards with different ‘ethnic focuses' – East Asian Americans, African Americans and Hispanic Americans are admitted to different wards. In the UK, the National Health Service has developed culturally specific services as well as funding voluntary sector services that target specific cultural or ethnic minority groups. Are such developments the correct way forward? Do they produce lasting change or just let general services off the hook? Can they work in major cities like London, Paris or New York where over a hundred languages are spoken?

Abstract:
Studies of regionalism in India have tended to concentrate on the secessionist struggles in Kashmir and Punjab, and on centre-State relations within the federal union. An issue which has received far less attention has been that of nonsecessionist regionalism—the various demands for the creation of new smaller States within India. The persistent tendency of the centre has been to view these movements as threatening and divisive and, therefore, with varying degrees of success, to resist and repress them. However, a number of commentators have suggested that smaller States are one way in which India's federal structure could become more equipoised, decentralised, and participatory. In this paper the author examines the recent mass movement for a separate State of Uttarakhand, an area which currently forms the Himalayan part of the State of Uttar Pradesh. Given the limitations of space, she concentrates on one aspect of the movement, namely how protestors have mobilised particular grammars and strategies of resistance in their struggle to persuade the central government (the final arbiter) that their demands for separation from Uttar Pradesh are justified and that the creation of Uttarakhand would benefit both the region and the country, economically, environmentally, and strategically.
