Abstract Progressive urban development of the human environment requires new methods of rain water treatment. Recently, there has been a growing interest in the improvement of gravitational suspension separation, and especially in the application of the centrifugal force. This important factor can be induced in two ways; by the circulation of the reservoir containing the fluid (centrifugal separators), or by a tangent supply of this reservoir (circulative separators). In addition to the centrifugal force, another essential transversal force is at work in this case, resulting from the local variability of the pressure. In the literature, this force is derived for centrifuge conditions, but applied also to circulative separators, which is questionable, as in the latter devices velocity and pressure fields are clearly different. The paper is devoted to the determination of the transversal pressure effect in circulative separators. First, a model of tangent and radial velocity profiles is introduced. The radial pressure distribution, calculated on this basis and verified experimentally, leads to the final result, that is, a technical formula describing the force in question

Background: In the light of apparently spurious serum vitamin B12 results in some patients, the effect of serum separator sample tubes on serum vitamin B12 values, assayed by the Bayer Centaur analyser, was examined. Method: Results of parallel assays of serum vitamin B12 in plain (non-gel) serum tubes and serum separator gel tubes were compared. Serum in previously centrifuged gel tubes was mixed in the tube and the effect of that mixing on assay results quantitated. A limited investigation of the effect of tube cap type was also carried out. Results: Serum vitamin B12 concentration was 54% higher in samples taken into serum separator tubes after re-mixing the serum in the original tube. This effect could be abolished by re-centrifugation. Conclusions: Use of serum separator tubes may be associated with spuriously elevated serum vitamin B12 concentrations in the Bayer Centaur assay. Laboratories receiving samples for vitamin B12 assay in serum separator tubes that have already been centrifuged should either re-centrifuge the tubes, or aliquot and re-centrifuge serum from the tubes prior to vitamin B12 assay.

Abstract:
The fluid flow in the double cyclone separator is numerical simulated, using the Navier-Stokes equations with the Reynolds stress model (RSM). The basic parameters of gas flow are obtained as functions of radius such as the tangential velocity, the axial velocity and the static pressure. The numerical results show that in the cyclones water liquids are centrifuged onto the walls and removed from the natural gas due to the strong centrifugal field, while the natural gas stays in the central region and moves out from the up-outlet. The water can be well removed from the natural gas.

The article provides a brief analysis of the internal diameter and capacity of a vertical gravity separator. The process of separation should be understood as the process of separating the solid, liquid and vapor phases in a stream. Devices in which liquid and solid phases are separated from gas are called separators. Separators used in gas condensate mines are divided into classes according to their different qualities. Separators are divided into the following types (classes) according to their purpose: a) working separators; b) measuring separators. Separators are cylindrical and spherical according to their geometric shapes. Separators are vertical, horizontal and inclined depending on their position in space. Due to the phase separation, the separators are of mechanical, liquid and electric type. This chapter mainly expounds the use and performance characteristics of lithium-ion battery separators, the research progress of the three most widely used lithium battery separators, and systematically analyzes the characteristics of various thin-film materials, as well as the current four major processes for preparing separators: dry and wet. Abstract:
When quantifying mechanical properties of blood samples flowing in closed fluidic circuits, blood samples are collected at specific intervals. Centrifugal separation is considered as a required procedure for preparing blood samples. However, the use of centrifuge is associated with several issues, including the potential for red blood cell (RBC) lysis, clotting activation, and RBC adhesions in the tube. In this study, an ultrasonic transducer is employed to separate RBCs or diluent from blood sample. The ultrasonic radiation force is much smaller than the centrifugal force acting in centrifuge, it can avoid critical issues occurring under centrifuge. Then, the RBC aggregation and blood viscosity of the blood sample are obtained using the microfluidic technique. According to the numerical results, ultrasonic transducers exhibited a maximum quality factor at an excitation frequency of 2.1 MHz. Periodic pattern of acoustic pressure fields were visualized experimentally as a column mode. The half wavelength obtained was as 0.5 λ = 0.378 ± 0.07 mm. The experimental results agreed with the analytical estimation sufficiently. An acoustic power of 2 W was selected carefully for separating RBCs or diluent from various blood samples (i.e., Hct = 20% ~ 50%; diluent: plasma, 1x phosphate-buffered saline (PBS), and dextran solution). The present method was employed to separate fixed blood samples which tended to stack inside the tube while using the centrifuge. Fixed RBCs were collected easily with an ultrasonic transducer. After various fixed blood samples with different base solutions (i.e., glutaraldehyde solution, 1x PBS, and dextran solution) were prepared using the present method, RBC aggregation and the viscosity of the blood sample are successfully obtained. In the near future, the present method will be integrated into ex vivo or in vitro fluidic circuit for measuring multiple mechanical properties of blood samples for a certain longer period.

Due to the high speed of rotation of the centrifugal separator cone, it is possible to separate particles of small sizes. In its turn, the high speed of rotation of the centrifugal separator cone leads to clogging of the grooves of the separator cone with solid particles. The increased pressure of the turbulizing agent contributes to the loosening of solid particles in the grooves of the centrifugal separator cone, but can wash out particles with increased density from the grooves. Also, the loss of a valuable component is associated with the fact that particles of a valuable component located on the surface of the near-wall layer do not have time to get into the grooves in one cycle and are washed out of the separator cone together with the light fraction. In this regard, there is a need to study the increase in centrifugal separation using it in the circulating concentration scheme. Experiments were carried out in laboratory conditions on an artificial mixture of tungsten and quartz. The results of the experiments show an increase in enrichment rates.

Abstract:
Vibrating screen centrifuge screens, commonly used for de-watering coal, are subject to high abrasive wear rates and consequently large maintenance costs. Ceramic and composite materials were investigated and tested to find materials suitable for design of a cost effective screening surface with a greatly improved service life through reduced wear. Alumina, bauxite, silicon carbide, fusion cast Zac and Basalt ceramics, and alumina or bauxite particle composites with epoxy and polyurethane matrices were tested for wear resistance using six different tests. A reduction in wear by more than an order of magnitude over present centrifuge screen materials was shown if alumina was used. A centrifuge screen and integral structural support frame were designed. Alumina ceramic was used as the screening surface material, and glass and kevlar fibre reinforced plastics used as structural components in order to reduce weight. Extensive use was made of adhesively bonded joints. The screen and frame mechanical integrity were determined by analysis of all forces acting in service, calculation of the stresses in structural components, and finite element modelling of the frame, screen surface, and adhesive joints. The mechanical properties of the fibre reinforced plastic components and adhesives used were measured to check for adequate strength. In addition, adhesive formulation tests were carried out to maximize adhesion to ceramic surfaces and check the effect of moisture and temperature. A financial analysis of both the total cost of the project and centrifuge screen unit costs demonstrated that there are substantial cost benefits available to the centrifuge operators. Adequate financial returns for the investment in research and development for manufacture of the centrifuge screen itself are also apparent.

Abstract:
High speed separators from Alfa Laval are widely in use for processing flammable and non-flammable liquids. The following work is focusing on the case of non-flammable liquid as the process liquid in case the working area around the equipment may contain quantities of explosive gases. As stated by Alfa Laval documentation, the major risk is leaking of the explosive atmosphere into the separator from the surrounding environment which may result in producing zone 1 or zone 2 of hazardous area classification. Zone 1: Area in which an explosive gas-air mixture is likely to occur for short periods in normal operation.1 Zone 2: Area in which an explosive gas-air mixture is not likely to occur, and if it occurs it will only exist for a very short time due to an abnormal condition.1 According to Alfa Laval design package, there is a need of continuous inert gas injection into the separator during the process in order to reduce the oxygen concentration and keep it in the safe level (inert gas purging) and this policy is aimed to meet the requirements of ATEX-directive 94/9/EC/2003. The objective of the current thesis is a wish to have a better understanding of the potential risks, evaluating them and try to find ways to ease the process. The outcome can be useful to make a basic instruction for further tests and simplifications as well. The separator GTN 50 is selected and hydrogen (1% concentration) is used to simulate the explosive atmosphere. The result of the tests indicates that the cooling down stage after normal operation is the only period in which hydrogen will leak into the separator, frame top part and it should be cleaned up before the next start up. A number of recommendations -Ventilation to the fresh air, Water discharges, Pressurized air injectionare also being tested and discussed. Ventilation to the fresh air and injection of pressurized air seem to be applicable A Standard Testing Flow chart is suggested and calculation on real case is considered. A number of additional ideas are also included in the last section.

Abstract:
Natural gas is a vital component of the worlds’ supply of energy. In Norway all the gas can be found offshore where it needs to processed before transport. A vital part of the processing is gas and liquid separation. Current gas-liquid separators are big and expensive, and the offshore industry is looking for more compact separators. One of the more prominent technologies is the NNNGLseparator developed at NTNU. To further identify its possibilities, a thorough research program has been startedIn this thesis one-dimensional models describing pressure drop and separation performance of the NTNU Natural Gas Liquid Separator (NNGLseparator) for dispersed gas-liquid flows has been studied. Here modeling of separation performance was divided into cyclonic separation and droplet capture by the meshpad, and then combined in sequence. The droplet capture is assumed to occur before cyclonic separation.To analyze the impact of centrifugal force on droplet capture, the force was included in a previous proposed model describing droplet capture by a single fiber in the meshpad. With this as basis, modeling of total droplet capture for the meshpad was analyzed. Through this analysis we proposed an extension on the existing model for the case of the flow not following the rotation of the meshpad. The droplets that are not captured are then separated through cyclonic separation. To model this separation mechanism, a modified time of flight model was developed. The modification includes the mesh porosity, and a - factor describing the droplet’s reduced radial velocity due to the obstructing meshpad.Existing models for pressure drop across fixed porous media were compared to experimental data to identify which model best applies to the meshpad used in the NNGLseparator. How this model performs in describing a rotating porous media was then analyzed for the two scenarios; fully developed flow before mesh entry and developing flow inside a rotating meshpad. Through this analysis an extension to the pressure drop model was proposed, which includes the tangential velocity difference between rotating mesh and gas flow. A previous proposed model for pressure drop across wet mesh pad was reviewed. This led to a discussion on how liquid hold up differs in the NNGLseparator from conventional fixed meshpads. The proposed one-dimensional models were then analyzed through a parametric study of the separator performance in terms of pressure drop and efficiency of droplet separation for different flow conditions and geometries.

Abstract:
This project was concerned with the analysis and development of a decanter centrifuge. The aim of the project was to increase the understanding of the operation of the machine, and identify and implement methods of improving the performance. A comprehensive breakdown of the power consumption of a GTech-Bellmor 1456 Centrifuge Decanter was completed. There are four components of the power consumption in a decanter centrifuge: friction during product transport, viscous and kinetic losses during feed acceleration, inefficiencies in power transmission components, and aerodynamic losses, known as windage. A mathematical model was developed to predict the power, torque, and axial force required by product transport. A relationship for the power consumed during feed acceleration was derived from first principles. The power transmission losses are comprised of inefficiencies in the motors, belt drives, gearbox, bearings, and seals; each of these was quantified. The windage has two components: the surface drag on the bowl as it rotates in an annular space and the pressure drag on external protrusions. The windage was predicted empirically and computationally. Methods that were identified for improving the decanter centrifuge were: reduce the mass of bowl and scroll, improve wear resistance, reduce the coefficient of friction of the bowl wall and scroll faces, optimise scroll geometry, redesign the feed accelerator to increase acceleration efficiency, implement control of the bowl speed, differential speed, and pool depth, and recess the bolt heads on the bowl and cover the third phase ports. An analysis of several worn centrifuges revealed that the majority of the wear occurs on the scroll, bowl wall, accelerator, and solids discharge ports. An experiment was developed to recreate the wear conditions inside a centrifuge. A high pressure abrasive film was forced between materials moving relative to each other. Similar results were observed for acetel, UHMWPE, and 316 stainless steel when using a pin-on-disk wear test rig. A new composite bowl was developed for two main reasons, weight reduction, and improved wear and friction characteristics. The full design process was applied to the bowl and several concepts were generated for a new scroll. The design of the bowl included conceptual design, material selection, material testing, constructing scale models, and the manufacture of a full-size bowl for a GTech-Bellmor 1456 Centrifuge Decanter. The potential for using composite materials in decanter centrifuges was demonstrated. The manufacturing method developed during this project was novel and produced parts suitable for use in high-speed rotating machinery. The feed accelerator analysis consisted of three components: theoretical, experimental, and computational analysis. Three feed acceleration mechanisms were identified: viscous dissipation, impulse force, and mass flow induced velocity. An experimental method was developed to examine decanter centrifuge feed accelerator designs. The method allowed for the measurement of efficiency and high-speed photography of the flow between the accelerator and the rotating pool. The order of best to worst performing of the six tested designs was Modified Disk, Disk, Plate, Conical, Drum, and Esbjerg. The feed accelerator was modelled using ANSYS-CFX 14.5 and compared to the experimental results. There was excellent agreement between the flow in the annular space observed using high-speed photography and the paths predicted using the computational model. A parametric study of the Drum and Disk feed accelerator designs was undertaken using the computational model. It was found that increasing the surface area of the port faces of the Drum accelerator and increasing the discharge angle and discharge radius for the Disk accelerator improved the performance.

Abstract:
The main objective is to perform a life cycle assessment (LCA) on a hot milk high-speed centrifugal separator (HMRPX 918-HGV-74C, product number 881275 01 01. The purpose of a life cycle assessment (LCA) is to provide a picture of a product’s total environmental impact during its lifecycle. The study is carried out according to ISO 14 040, i.e. all methods, data and assumptions are accounted for in order to make an external review possible. An LCA could provide the basis for an Environmental Product Declaration (EPD). The LCA clearly shows that the main environmental impact of the separator is caused by CIP and electricity used during operation. The major part of the impact from the CIP chemicals is due to the energy needed for their manufacture. Fossil fuels account for most of the impact for both operation and manufacture of chemicals. Therefore customers should be encouraged to use environmentally friendly electricity and chemicals, such as renewable energy sources and sodium hydroxide made with membrane technology. It is also important to use as little as possible of cleaning agents and make sure that waste is treated properly.

Abstract:
Moisture recovery is important in the operation of many fuel cell systems, especially proton exchange membrane (PEM) fuel cells. The exhaust of a PEM fuel cell is a moderate temperature, pressurized humid air stream. A system that recovers liquid water condensate from the pressurized humid exhaust stream of a PEM fuel cell would markedly increase the effectiveness of such a system. The recovered water could be used to hydrate the fuel cell membrane, and it could supply a hydrocarbon reformer used for generating hydrogen. This project investigated and documented moisture recovery from the simulated humid exhaust stream of a 25 kW fuel cell with an improved axial flow separator. An axial flow centrifugal separator design was chosen as the best candidate due to its high efficiency and low pressure drop and a prototype was designed and constructed. The separator was then integrated into an experimental test system. First, the stream was simulated by heating compressed air and then humidifying it with superheated steam. Then, after expanding through the turbine section of an automotive turbocharger, the humid stream was passed through the moisture separator where liquid water condensate was removed from the flow. Results are presented for varying turbine inlet conditions at three separate separation lengths. It is shown that the separation efficiency for the improved design was 40% higher and the pressure drop was only 1/3 that of the conventional separator.

Abstract:
Separation is one of the most important types of processes that a chemical engineer uses. Separation is achieved by exploiting the differing properties possessed by the components to be separated. These properties might be chemical or physical, such as the particle shape or size, the readiness of one component to freeze or boil, or the ability of one component to be preferentially absorbed into a liquid. In this chapter, we explore a range of different separation processes. We focus on several types of separators – the distillation column, the cyclone separator, the absorption column and the centrifugal separator. We conclude by looking in detail at the ion-exchange process used to remove unwanted contaminants from water.

Abstract:
The development of centrifugal separators used for oilfield multi-phase separation is introduced. The structural types and functional principles of the separators, which include static, adjustable, rotary and dynamic hydrocyclones, spiral separator, gas-liquid cylindrical cyclone, and spiral tube separator, etc., are described. The main characteristics, advantages, disadvantages, separating effect of the separators are analyzed respectively. The application condition of each type is introduced as well. The research state-of-the-art of the separators and some of their applications are also described. The right way for selecting an efficient separator is based on the actual operating condition in order to obtain satisfactory treating result. This paper would be beneficial for the selection, design, and application of different separators in oilfields, especially for offshore applications.

Abstract:
Abstract Gas evolution and expansion are natural phenomena in petroleum wells. However, gas is detrimental to pumping artificial-lift (AL) systems, causing incomplete pump fillage and reduced pump efficiency. Pumping AL systems may also be involved in high GLR applications for gas well deliquification. It then becomes essential to separate the gas before the pump's intake in these applications to preserve the life of the pump. Various downhole separators with questionable efficiencies are available today. In this study, an automated experimental separation facility is presented and applied to test the efficiency of two downhole separators. The setup includes a 31-ft horizontal section followed by a 27-ft vertical section that houses the separator. The performance of the separators is evaluated at different air (34 - 215 Mscf/d) and water rates (17 - 867 BPD). The multiphase-flow loop is equipped with pressure transducers and control valves for effective flow control. Data acquisition and process control are performed using LabVIEW™. A newly designed packer-type centrifugal downhole separator is evaluated over a wide range of flow rates and compared to a basic gravity-type separator without the centrifugal part. The performance and outlet flow stability of the separators are compared. Liquid separation efficiency is a measure of the fraction of the inlet liquid produced at the tubing return line. Output flow stability is measured by looking at the ratio of standard deviation over the average flow rate. Separation efficiency is close to ideal (100%) for liquid rates up to 500 BPD for both separators. The efficiency slightly decreases at higher liquid rates, but stays above 80%. This decline in efficiency is more noticeable for the gravity separator compared to the centrifugal, and it is sharper for higher gas rates (over 300 SCF/STB). The centrifugal separator provides a more stable output flow rate with less fluctuations compared to the gravity type. Various flow patterns in the separator outlet and the casing are visualized and recorded. With declining rates of production from oil fields and the need to de-liquefy gas wells, efficient artificial lift is necessary. This system provides a unique and novel tool to simulate the dynamics of flow in wellbores and identify the best tools to improve the efficiency.

Application background of gas-liquid separators is introduced. Centrifugal gas-liquid separators have many advantages, which are analyzed by comparing with normal gravity settling facilities. Experimental research was carried out. Test rig and facilities are described. Test prototypes are transparent plexi-glass separators. Through transparent prototypes, interior flow field can be observed clearly. Experimental phenomena of different structure plexi-glass prototypes are compared with and analyzed, some test photos were recorded. Test data of plexi-glass prototypes were obtained. Results show that the separating performance of the centrifugal gas-liquid separators is satisfactory. The structural scheme of high-efficient separator design is concluded.

This paper presents the development and testing of an advanced rotating centrifugal separator. This design extends separation technology to higher velocity and flowrate capabilities suitable for use as an inlet scrubber for industrial centrifugal compressors. Because of the inherent compact nature of the device it is particularly useful for oil and gas applications on offshore platforms where size and weight have high value. In addition to the separator design, a non-dimensional separation parameter is developed from first principles and is shown to be useful in accessing the degree of difficulty of separation for rotating centrifugal separator devices. An overview of a novel design evolution procedure used to optimize the rotating centrifugal separator is also presented.

Abstract Gas-liquid separation is widely used in many fields, such as nuclear energy and petroleum resources. And the gas-liquid mixture separated gradually shows the characteristic of wide range of gas void fraction and variable flow patterns. However, the current separators only suit for narrow range of gas void fraction or single flow patterns. In this research, two different new type separators using centrifugal technology were designed and an experimental system was constructed to test the two separators using dry air and water under different flow patterns, including bubble, slug and churn flow. One was called inline separator consisting of three swirls and another was called double-layer cylinder separator composed of a central tube, a swirl and an outer tube. The results show that the separation performance of the inline separator was sensitive to flow patterns and the two-layer cylinder separator keeps high efficiency in different flow patterns. In bubble flow and slug flow patterns, the two separators kept high efficiency, while the oscillation of the gas core in the inline separator aggravated under slug flow condition. When increasing the gas void fraction, the turbulence of the churn flow led to the diameter of the gas core change drastically and reduce separation efficiency significantly.

The present paper describes the development of a Computational Fluid Dynamic (CFD) modeling approach suitable for the analysis, design, and optimization of rotating centrifugal separator stage geometries. The Homogeneous Multiple Size Group (MUSIG) model implemented in the commercial code CFX V13.0 was utilized as a basis for the CFD modeling method. The model was developed through a series of studies to understand the impact of droplet size distribution, particle coalescence, rotor/stator interface treatment, and mesh resolution on the prediction of separation efficiency for a given rotating separator geometry. This model was then validated against the OEM’s extensive in-house experimental separation testing database. The resulting CFD modeling method is shown to adequately reproduce observed trends in separation performance over a wide range of operating conditions.

A Liquid-Liquid Cylindrical Cyclone separator (LLCC) is a device used in the petroleum industry to separate the oil-water mixture obtained from the well. The use of this device has not been widespread due to the lack of tools for predicting its separation capability. This paper presents a numerical and experimental study of the fluid dynamic performance of this type of cylindrical cyclone separators. The use of numerical simulations would reduce the time and cost necessary to obtain information for predicting the behavior of the equipment. The objective of this study is to determine if CFD (Computational Fluid Dynamics) techniques are able to reproduce the behavior of a LLCC separator. The CFD software examined was ANSYS-CFX 5.6™ and numerical simulations were carried out using the dispersed model with oil as the dispersed phase. The oil and water mixture entering the separator is divided due to centrifugal and buoyancy forces in an upper (oil rich) exit and a bottom (water rich) exit. The separation capability is determined as the maximum amount of water removed from the mixture with the minimum amount of oil content in the water rich exit. The experiments were conducted in a transparent LLCC separator that allows the visualization of the mixture and the measurement of the oil content. Experiments were conducted for three variables: mixture velocity and water content at the entrance, and the split ratio. The split ratio is defined as the bottom exit flow rate divided by the water flow rate at the entrance. The results showed that CFD tools are able to reproduce the oil content obtained from the experiments for all analyzed conditions. Additionally, the mixture distribution images from numerical and experimental data showed good agreement. This study confirms the capacity of CFD tools for the multiphase flow analysis of LLCC separators.
