They range from harmless self-curing cystitis to severe pyelonephritis with life-threatening sepsis. Urinary tract infections are often recurrent. Host defence is crucial to control the infection but can also be deleterious in terms of scar formation. Abstract:
This chapter focuses on evaluation of a patient in the intensive care unit who develops fever in the setting of an indwelling central line and urinary catheter. Focus is on the development of a differential including central line associated blood stream infection, catheter-associated urinary tract infection, and hospital-acquired pneumonia as the most likely etiology of the patient’s decompensation. Emphasis is on rapid source control and treatment to control sepsis and decompensation to shock. Key management steps include consideration of the most likely sources of infection in the patient wh

Abstract Accurate diagnosis of a medical condition is often the first step towards its control. Appropriate treatment generally depends on knowing what the condition is. Diagnosis is a familiar part of everyday life. I diagnose a runny nose and sore throat as a cold, that I then treat with chicken soup, orange juice and rest. More formal, familiar medical diagnostic tests include, for example, bacterial cultures, radiographic images and biochemical tests. Consider bacterial culture of a throat swab for streptococcal infection (strep throat), of urine for urinary tract infection, of blood for s

Objective: Elizabethkingia meningoseptica is an increasingly frequent microorganism in healthcare settings. It is especially concerning in patients with previous comorbidities and premature children, presenting high antimicrobial resistance. This work aims to describe a case of urinary tract infection caused by E. meningoseptica. Method: The identification of the isolate was performed by the Vitek 2 Compact and Vitek MS Systems. The antimicrobial susceptible was evaluated by the Vitek 2 Compact system, except for vancomycin, which was tested by the broth microdilution method. Clinical data wer

Acinetobacter baumannii, a Gram-negative, nosocomial, opportunistic pathogen is commonly infectious in immunocompromised patients. More specifically patients develop healthcare-associated infections (HAI) spanning beyond sepsis, pneumonia, meningitis, and urinary tract infections. Due to its rapid ability to acquire antibiotic resistance, it has raised the necessity to discern a novel therapeutic treatment that can be effectively used against the multidrug resistant (MDR) A. baumannii. Cooper University Hospital (CUH) faced an increased case load of patients that were infected with MDR A. baum
