Shuming, Liang. Fundamentals of Chinese Culture. Translated by Li Ming. NL Amsterdam: Amsterdam University Press, 2021. http://dx.doi.org/10.5117/9789463729659.

Full text
Abstract:
Chinese culture, to readers of English, is somewhat veiled in mystery. Fundamentals of Chinese Culture, a classic of great insight and profundity by noted Chinese thinker, educator and social reformist Liang Shuming, takes readers on an intellectual journey into the five-thousand-year-old culture of China, the world’s oldest continuous civilization. With a set of "Chinese-style" cultural theories, the book well serves as a platform for Westerners' better understanding of the distinctive worldview of the Chinese people, who value family life and social stability, and for further mutual understanding and greater mutual consolidation among humanities scholars in different contexts, dismantling common misconceptions about China and bridging the gap between Chinese culture and Western culture. As a translation of Liang Shuming’s original text, this book pulls back the curtain to reveal to Westerners a highly complex and nuanced picture of a fascinating people.

Kanasaka, Kiyonori. Isabella Bird and Japan. Translated by Nicholas Pertwee. GB Folkestone: Amsterdam University Press, 2017. http://dx.doi.org/10.5117/9781898823513.

Full text
Abstract:
This book places Bird's visit to Japan in the context of her worldwide life of travel and gives an introduction to the woman herself. Supported by detailed maps, it also offers a highly illuminating view of Japan and its people in the early years of the 'New Japan' following the Meiji Restoration of 1868, as well as providing a valuable new critique on what is often considered as Bird's most important work. The central focus of the book is a detailed exploration of Bird's journeys and the careful planning that went into them with the support of the British Minister, Sir Harry Parkes, seen as the prime mover, who facilitated her extensive travels through his negotiations with the Japanese authorities. Furthermore, the author dismisses the widely-held notion that Bird ventured into the field on her own, revealing instead the crucial part played by Ito, her young servant-interpreter, without whose constant presence she would have achieved nothing. Written by Japan's leading scholar on Isabella Bird, the book also addresses the vexed question of the hitherto universally-held view that her travels in Japan in 1878 only involved the northern part of Honshu and Hokkaido. This mistaken impression, the author argues, derives from the fact that the abridged editions of Unbeaten Tracks in Japan that appeared after the 1880 two-volume original work entirely omit her visit to the Kansai, which took in Osaka, Kyoto, Kobe and the Ise Shrines. Bird herself tells us that she wrote her book in the form of letters to her sister Henrietta but here the author proposes the intriguing theory that these letters were never actually sent. Many well-known figures, Japanese and foreign, are introduced as having influenced Bird's journey indirectly, and this forms a fascinating sub-text.

Abstract:
The International Studies Association’s (ISA) Scientific Study of International Processes (SSIP) section is dedicated to the systematic analysis of empirical data covering the entire range of international political questions. Drawing on the canons of scientific inquiry, SSIP seeks to support and promote replicable research in terms of the clarity of a theoretical argument and/or the testing of hypotheses. Journals that have been most likely to publish SSIP-related research include the top three general journals in the field of political science: the American Political Science Review, American Journal of Political Science, and Journal of Politics. A number of more specialized journals frequently publish research of interest to the SSIP community, such as Conflict Management and Peace Science, International Interactions, International Organization, International Studies Quarterly, Journal of Conflict Resolution, and Journal of Peace Research. Together, these journals published a total of 1,024 qualifying articles between 2003 and 2010. These articles cover a wide range of topics, from armed conflict and conflict management to terrorism, international political economy, economic development or growth, monetary policy, foreign aid, sanctions, human rights and repression, international law, international organizations/institutions, and foreign policy attitudes and beliefs. Data users who are interested in conducting their own research must: choose the most appropriate data set(s), become familiar with what the data set includes and how its central concepts are measured, multipurpose data sources, investigate missing data, and assess robustness across multiple data sets.

Abstract:
Romanticism was not just about the high points of insight and emotion: people lived ordinary lives, nourished by bonds of reciprocity. If people were separated by distance, reciprocity was sustained by letters. Letters were not only a vehicle for exchange of information and opinions: they played an important role in upholding and reaffirming a set of relations. They brought people together, strengthened family relationships, and helped to build social networks. The generic boundaries between letters and journals were fluid: the impetus for journal writing was often reciprocal exchange or collaboration. Letters and journals were compositions, in which writers constructed narratives of their lives. They were not the background to creative work, but creative work in themselves. Many different interests contributed to the preservation of Romantic-period letters and journals. The story of the survival of these personal documents is also a story of the transmission of value.

Rigolot, François. Montaigne’s. Edited by Philippe Desan. Oxford University Press, 2015. http://dx.doi.org/10.1093/oxfordhb/9780190215330.013.12.

Full text
Abstract:
After publishing the first two books of his Essays in 1580, Montaigne set out on a long journey, which took him to Italy through eastern France, Switzerland, Germany, and Austria. This extensive “field trip” allowed him to expand on his bookish knowledge of Latin and Italian languages and cultures. Like many of his contemporaries, he was eager to see what was left of Rome, a city that had occupied so much of his classical education. The manuscript of his Travel Journal, written between June 1580 and November 1581, was not discovered until 1770, and three editions were published in 1774. Although the manuscript disappeared during the French Revolution and has never been retrieved, an incomplete hand-written copy was discovered in the 1980s, which proved instrumental in correcting the text of the 18th-century editions. The text is composed of four sections: the first is written in French by an anonymous secretary; the second is written by Montaigne himself in French; the third is also written by Montaigne but in Italian; the fourth and shortest section is written in French by the essayist on his way home.

Coyer, Megan. Medical Discourse and Ideology in the Edinburgh Review. Edinburgh University Press, 2017. http://dx.doi.org/10.3366/edinburgh/9781474405607.003.0002.

Full text
Abstract:
This chapter examines medical discourses and ideologies in the Edinburgh Review to set up a comparative context for examining the relationship of their primary ideological competitor – Blackwood’s Edinburgh Magazine – to medical culture. It argues that the reforming and professionalising rhetoric of the Edinburgh emerged, in part, from medico-scientific culture and was harnessed by key medical contributors, such as John Thomson (1765–1846), Andrew Duncan, junior (1773–1832), and John Gordon (1786–1818). This rhetoric was carried forward in Archibald Constable’s Edinburgh Medical and Surgical Journal. The scathing reviews of medical and physiological texts in the Edinburgh Review are read as drawing upon and contributing to the liberal Whig ideology and reforming rhetoric of the journal, while also forwarding the professional agenda of individual contributors.

O'Cathain, Alicia. Selecting research questions. Edited by Alicia O'Cathain. Oxford University Press, 2018. http://dx.doi.org/10.1093/med/9780198802082.003.0008.

Full text
Abstract:
Qualitative research can make a wide range of contributions to the generation of evidence of effectiveness. Researchers do not necessarily set out with the intention of addressing these issues. That is, researchers can start with a broader set of research questions, and then specific issues can emerge during the qualitative analysis that are considered to be important enough to become the focus of a journal article. In this chapter consideration is given to the research question, or set of research questions, articulated in the proposal or published protocol. Issues addressed in the chapter include the factors shaping the selection of research questions, examples of research questions used in proposals and publications, and challenges faced when selecting research questions.

Coleman, Deirdre. Henry Smeathman, the Flycatcher. Liverpool University Press, 2018. http://dx.doi.org/10.3828/liverpool/9781786940537.001.0001.

Full text
Abstract:
In 1771 Joseph Banks, John Fothergill and other wealthy collectors sent a talented, self-taught naturalist to Sierra Leone to collect all things rare and curious, from moths to monkeys. The name of this collector was Henry Smeathman, an ingenious and enterprising Yorkshireman keen on improving his position in the world. His expedition to the West African coast, which coincided with a steep rise in British slave trading in this area, lasted four years during which time he built a house on the Banana Islands, married several times into the coast’s ruling dynasties, and managed to negotiate the tricky life of a ‘stranger’ bound to landlords and local customs. In this book, which draws on a rich and little-known archive of journals and letters, Coleman retraces Smeathman’s life and his attitudes to slavery, both African and European, as he shuttled between his home on the Bananas and two key Liverpool trading forts—Bunce Island and the Isles de Los. In the logistical challenges of tropical collecting and the dispatch of specimens across the middle passage we see the close connection forged in this period between science, collecting, and slavery. The book also reproduces and discusses Smeathman’s essay describing his journey on a fully slaved ship from West Africa to Barbados, a unique account because it is written by a passenger unconnected to the slave trade. After four years in the West Indies observing plantation slavery Smeathman returned to England to write his ‘Voyages and Travels’.

Hunter, J. Paul. Defoe, Journalism, and the Early English Novel. Oxford University Press, 2018. http://dx.doi.org/10.1093/oso/9780199580033.003.0031.

Full text
Abstract:
This chapter discusses Daniel Defoe's ambition to outline in everyday terms the economy of the world to produce a sense of the complete English gentleman, complete English tradesman, complete English planter and traveller, and complete English political theorist. His journalistic endeavours recorded and rhetorically shaped one set of aspects of that Englished world economy. His novels, with their minglings of fact and fantasy, of realism and coincidence, of ground detail and bird's-eye view, record and shape another set — of a reordered economy of genre. Defoe imports many different models into his texts, and each new model reproduces its own generic stamp in some way. An emblematic example of the novel is Robinson Crusoe (1719), in which the power of journalism, of repeated recording, to order a local or larger economy, is mirrored in Crusoe's journal.
