First impressions from faces emerge quickly and shape subsequent behaviour. Given that different pictures of the same face evoke different impressions, we asked whether presentation order affects the overall impression of the person. In three experiments, we presented naturally varying photos of a person’s face in ascending (low-to-high) or descending (high-to-low) order of attractiveness. We found that attractiveness ratings for a subsequent test item were higher for the descending condition than for the ascending condition (Experiment 1), consistent with anchoring effects. The paper aimed to identify the potential of this vocabulary and the sensory impression behind it as a means of conceptualizing knowledge about the world as well as to study the mechanism for the development of metaphorical, primarily synaesthetic, semantics. This paper offers an interpretation of select poems by the early 20th-century avant-garde poet Vasily Kamensky. Through an examination of early works from Kamensky's collection of “reinforced concrete poems,” particularly “Tango with Cows” (1914), various examples of the poet's visual texts are explored. Possible interpretations of the complex, often elusive pictorial poems of the aviator-poet are proposed. The texts of the poems “Vasily Kamensky's Flight on an Airplane in Warsaw” and “Constantinople” are analyzed, focusing on the techniques and mechanisms that generate unusual visual impressi

Infinity is intellectually incomprehensible to the human mind. Yet visual and acoustical illusions create the impression of infinite staircases and endlessly rising sequences of tones. Through the conscious use of proportion, the perception of extremes of scale can be induced in the viewer or listener, yet their effect is achieved subconsciously. Likewise a work of art can play with our sense of scale or proportion and influence our perception of time and space. There is a fundamental difference between the common illusion and the visual and acoustic shifts that can occur with our perception o

AbstractDespite continuous retinal chaos, we perceive the world as stable and complete. This illusion is sustained over consecutive glances by reliance on statistical redundancies inherent in the visual environment. For instance, repeating the average size of a collection of differently sized items speeds visual search for a randomly located target regardless of trial-to-trial changes in local element size (Corbett & Melcher, 2014b). Here, we manipulate set size to investigate the potential role attention may play in these facilitative effects of statistical stability on visual search. Obs

The author goes on, however, to argue for the ‘urgent need’ for full archives of video recordings of performances. She even quotes Eugenio Barba to the effect that what really matters in performance is not the immediate effect on the spectators, but a kind of afterglow and the impression to be made on future generations.

Over the last 20 years there have been dramatic advancements in our understanding of language; particularly regarding the ontogeny, phylogeny and neurobiology of syntactic abilities. Yet, how these language processes evolved remains unclear. The ability to extract information about the regularities present in sequentially presented stimuli has been related to both the acquisition and use of natural syntax. As a result, structured sequence learning is considered to be one of the general cognitive abilities from which language could have evolved. If sequence learning does represent an early prec
