Abstract:
The paper presents an approach to the design of technical systems, the elements of which are interconnected and carry out an internal exchange of energy. The above analysis showed that for heat-exchange equipment when combining devices into systems, only iterative methods are currently used, a representative of which is Pinch analysis. A limitation of the iterative approach is the impossibility of obtaining an exact solution to such problems, which can only be achieved by analytical methods, which also make it possible to reveal some effects in systems that are practically unavailable for numerical solution. This indicates the absence of a rigorous proof of the existence of a solution and a problem in the construction of approximate solutions, due to the need to involve complementary hypotheses. The topological representation of the system modules allows us to consider the architecture as a network, which contributes to the analysis of the connections between the constituent elements and the identification of their mutual influence. Highlighted the typical connections of network elements such as serial, parallel, contour, which allows to unify the principles of building connections in the system. As an optimality criterion, the NTU parameter was chosen, which includes the heat exchange surface and is usually used when searching for a solution for heat exchangers of moving objects. An analytical solution to the problem of flow distribution and energy exchange efficiency in a system of two series-connected heat exchangers is obtained. His analysis showed that the formulation of the design problem based on the definition of matrix elements in relation to determinants allows not only to meet the requirements for the system, but also to determine the design parameters of its elements that satisfy their extreme characteristics

Abstract:
A new concept of a dual-chamber serial-parallel piezoelectric pump with an integrated sensor (DSPPIS) is presented in this paper. By means of dividing a piezoelectric bimorph into an actuator and a sensor, sensing function is integrated onto the DSPPIS for flow rate measurement. A prototype of the DSPPIS was manufactured and assembled from a finished piezoelectric bimorph. Then, frequency and voltage characteristics were tested to evaluate the performance of the DSPPIS with serial and parallel connection. Experimental results show that the optimal frequency range of DSPPIS can be achieved and determined by itself through monitoring the sensing voltage when driven by a fixed voltage of 150 Vpp and a frequency range of 40–400 Hz. For a fixed frequency of 100 Hz and a voltage range of 50–250 Vpp, both the sensing voltage and output flow rate increase with the increase of driving voltage. It is observed that there is a positive correlation between sensing voltage and output flow rate, which was further fitted by using linear function. The correlation coefficients for the DSPPIS with serial and parallel connection are calculated as 0.9716 and 0.9054, respectively. As a result, the DSPPIS demonstrated in this paper has realized the measurement of flow rate without the additional flow-sensing equipment both in serial and parallel connection.

Abstract:
The work deals with relatively new components allowing electric energy accumulation – ultracapacitors. It focuses on their application in traffic systems – in independent electric vehicles. Design and verification of a system with ultracapacitor and DC/DC adaptive converter was done. Control of the adaptive converter modifies very positively the time wafeform of the traction accumulator current during the drive cycle. The designed connection of ultracapacitor and DC/DC converter implemented in the drive structure of experimental electric vehicle with induction machine contributes to increment the action radius of the vehicle by 16% (determined by experimental verification). This result was achived particularly by limitation of traction accumulator current peaks, And by more effective storage of energy gained by recuperative braking of the vehicle as well. The core of the system is a control of the adaptive converter in order to provide an active filtration of the accumulator’s current to its long-period mean value, i.e. elimination of current (power) peaks. These are caused by acceleration from non-zero initial vehicle speed or by recuperative braking. This is done by a subsidiary current loop. The converter has a superior voltage regulation loop, which sets in long-time period the voltage of ultracapacitors to the proper value – indirectly dependent on the speed of the vehicle. This ensures the appropriate energy management of the ultracapacitor. In the following, properties of test set of ultracapacitors were verified. Finally, methods of suppression of capacity variability influence in series connection of these components were compiled and critically reviewed.

This thesis presents a novel configuration of battery power by the outputs with serial connection of battery power modules (BPMs) for high voltage level loads. As compared to the conventional application of series-connected battery bank, this configuration operates the BPMs individually, and thus has the advantages of flexible control, convenient maintenance, and easily favorable battery management. The associated converter is equipped to a single battery pack, so that has lower component stresses leading to a higher circuit efficiency. The operation and the design of a lead-acid battery power with series boost-typed BPMs are illustrated. The operation and the design of the converter are illustrated. The control of the power converters is accomplished by a complex programmable logic device (CPLD). To improve the converter efficiency, the technique of synchronous rectification is introduced. For the BPMs designed for discontinuous conduction mode (DCM) operation, charge equalization can be automatically achieved under the same duty-ratio, but is adequate only for batteries with a small difference. On the other hand, charge equalization for the BPMs with continuous conduction mode (CCM) can easily be accomplished by regulating the duty-ratios of the converters.

In this research we propose a performance measurement and queueing analysis for medium-high blocking probability where the service rate is less than equal to the arrival rate of parallel connection servers, and for which we can estimate the system response time. First, we calculate the system response time of the parallel network. Second, we simulate the queueing model of the parallel network and calculate the system response time. Third, we measure the system response time by using different numbers of ASP multiplication loops to represent the different service rates of the parallel network. Fourth, we take 30,000 data for imitation as our foundation and use linear regression to compare the measurements of both the system response time and the search service rates of the actual system under different service load conditions. Fifth, we compare the system response time of a single server with up to ten parallel connection servers and compute the discrepancy in their efficiency. This research paper aims at analysis efficiency in estimating the performance of tree connected servers. We use a queuing model to represent their equivalent performance and service quality. The queue types of the connection servers can be classified as serial, parallel and tree connections. We design an algorithm to simplify the equivalent serial-parallel queues. According to the equivalent queues we compute the system response time of the tree connected servers. We use both a network simulation and an analytical software tool to represent the equivalent performance of the queue. Our simulation, by using various different service rates and arrival rates of the queue models, finds the system response time. We also measure the average system response time in comparison with the simulation result to find out the service rates of the actual servers and evaluate the accuracy of the algorithm. We will find that the error margin of measurement, simulation and computing ranges from 1.37%-19.27%.

Abstract:
Love at Last Sight is a history of dating in the modern metropolis. It opens with the seemingly simple question, “How did single people meet and fall in love in new big cities like Berlin at the turn of the century?” but what emerges from this investigation of daily newspapers, diaries, serial novels, advice literature, police records, and court cases is a world of dating and relationships that was anything but simple. The murder of Frieda Kliem, a young, enterprising seamstress who was using newspaper personal ads to find a husband—the story of which serves as the book’s central narrative—reveals the tremendous risk associated with modern approaches to love and dating. The risk of fraud, censure, or worse was ever present, especially for the many Berliners who strove for the stability of middle-class life but were outsiders to the social power structures of German society. Indeed, though the technologies and opportunities of the big city offered the best shot at finding love or intimate connection among the urban sea of strangers, availing oneself of them—pursuing a missed connection from the streetcar or using a newspaper personal ad—meant putting one’s livelihood, respectability, and life on the line. This was the romantic dilemma facing the vast majority of city dwellers at the turn of the century, and a great many chose to risk everything for some measure of connection and intimacy. This book explores their stories as a way of illuminating this core tension of modern, metropolitan life.

Abstract:
Chapter 7, ‘Biopolitics of Seriality’ considers the political possibilities that were released or inaugurated in the 1840s by this structure of seriality. It takes the whole run of Howitt’s Journal as its ‘serial’ case study and uses this liberal journal to think about how seriality was becoming increasingly important to the creation and maintenance of what we might now call biopolitics. Through its serial repetition of exemplary narratives of injustice around gender, race, class and age, Howitt’s Journal unconsciously reveals the profound connection between these constructs. Tracking the representation of children, slaves and the Irish across the run of the journal, partly through its use of work by Elizabeth Gaskell and Frederick Douglass, this chapter suggests that we need to develop a more complex way of thinking about the developing relationship between kinship, citizenship, and biopolitics at this critical historical moment.

When Samsung introduced its new curved television screen in 2014, I was struck not by the technology but by its official television advert. Rather than using science fiction or another ultra-modern environment to showcase this innovative new gadget, the advertisement featured a father and son in their pyjamas in the middle of a gladiatorial arena. All the tropes of screen antiquity were represented in the 30-second clip: the crowds, the arena, the evil emperor and of course the gladiators with their swords and sandals that defined the genre. What this advert encapsulated for me was not only that the audience’s interest in antiquity was alive and well, but also that there was an intrinsic connection between fictional antiquity and the (no longer so) small screen....

Abstract:
Dallapiccola’s Il prigioniero embodies a connection between political protest and musical technique. The composer’s specific use of dodecaphonic serialism can be interpreted as a reaction to Fascist ideology. Through an analytical narrative from three complementary angles, this chapter highlight how the music carries dramatic and ideological meaning. First, it explores a network of 12-tone rows and combinations projecting specific sounds and gestures acquiring and bestowing meaning through associations, disassociations, and re-associations with text and characters. Second, it investigates the role of “theatrical words,” tracing how word-music dyads develop reciprocal meanings and how individual, detached components lend momentum to the psychological drama. Third, it shows moments of overlapping meanings in which semantically filled musical motifs and/or text phrases combine to create a subplot of motives—an inner action displayed by the music in counterpoint with the drama.

Abstract:
This chapter investigates the main grammaticalization processes found in Oceanic languages. In connection with verbs of posture and localization (‘sit’, ‘be at a place’), of motion (‘go up/down’, ‘come’, ‘return’, ‘follow’) and with verbs such as ‘take’, ‘make’, ‘do’ as sources, different paths of development will be described that give rise to various grammatical morphemes, often preserving the original function and meaning of the verb. A few cases of grammaticalization involving nouns, as well as cases of relexification and unusual developments such as ‘degrammation’, will be discussed as well. The perspective of my analysis will be both a typological and a semantic one, underlining the importance of spatial representation, the contribution of serial verb constructions, and the role of metonymy and reanalysis in the grammaticalization processes found in Oceanic languages.

Abstract:
The chapter addresses compositional strategies in works by Arvo Pärt unifying his different creative periods. The impetus of early Flemish polyphony, which is present in the Symphony No. 3 (1971) and in the first tintinnabuli pieces (1976) is predicted in some of his earliest compositions: Pärt sought equality between the horizontal and vertical dimensions and the maximal structural reduction of composition since his serial works in 1963. The other focus of this chapter is on the specific relation of verbal text and music. The similar mathematical method for structuring music around the accents and number of syllables in words, such as is common in Pärt’s text-based tintinnabuli compositions, is difficult to find in any other examples of composed music, but the connection is prevalent in liturgical chanting. One parallel comes from Conrad Beissel (1691–1768)—the founder of a pietistic community in Pennsylvania and the author of a singular system of harmony for his hymns.

Abstract:
About 10% of patients with congenital heart disease have a univentricular heart, which includes a wide variation of diagnoses. These may occur in the setting of anomalies of cardiac and visceral situs. When considering treatment options, a practical approach has been to define univentricular heart disease as the heart in which just one ventricle is present that can sustain the circulation, whether anatomically or functionally. Treatment consists of staged palliation, starting with an aortic-to-pulmonary anastomosis, if required, and of stepwise separation of the systemic and pulmonary circulation, culminating in a total cavopulmonary connection where caval return passively flows into the lungs, bypassing the heart (called the Fontan procedure). Detailed anatomic, haemodynamic, and functional imaging is required throughout the staged treatment and during long-term follow-up. Cardiovascular magnetic resonance (CMR) is a widely recommended tool for this purpose. CMR imaging should include assessment of the pulmonary artery, the aortic arch to assess for arch obstruction, the ventricular outflow tract, systemic-to-pulmonary collaterals (aortic–pulmonary, veno-veno), anomalous venous structures, pulmonary or systemic veins, systemic venous return, ventricular size/function and blood flow, and tissue characterization for myocardial scarring. The focus of imaging may shift, depending on the stage of treatment. During staged palliation, CMR can be used to detect residual findings requiring additional interstage interventions. CMR is recommended after Fontan completion for serial follow-up of ventricular function, haemodynamics, physiology, and anatomical assessment of the Fontan pathway.
