Abstract:
Over the years, several myths have been peddled within societies and academic circles in relation to exploring the mysterious lives of serial killers. Socio-psycho factors have been used to explain some of their criminal behaviour. Some mythologies about serial killers are that most of them are loners, abused children, and sexually motivated killers. Some researchers have also attributed mental challenges, drugs, and alcohol as possible motives for serial killers. In some instances, some serial killers have confessed to heard unknown controlling voices, urging them to kill their victims. We are not in a rational or neutral position to know whether voices, hearing by serial killers, are actually factual experiences or not. However, to enter a plea of insanity for murder is widely known with the criminal law field. This is the reason why in some cases, offenders are accessed to ascertain their fitness to stand trial. This article deals with a very serious challenging crime and highlights the safety of citizens. The article has three aims, first, to explore and debunk the secretive world of serial killers. Second, to explore the serial killer’s motives and modus operandi. Third, to highlight the dangers serial killers pose to society. Some of the findings are that serial killer does not always live a life of a loner, and some understudy of serial killers found out some of them live a family life. Several serial killers were abused as children and from dysfunctional families and social backgrounds. Most serial killers are men and there is a patriarchal domineering and controlling personality, ascribed to serial killers

Abstract:
Serial killers are present all over the globe. Their acts shock and—not surprisingly—anger the public. This study will—for the first time in Hungary—focus on serial killers convicted in Hungary by analyzing their crimes and their behavior during incarceration. This paper has the as-yet unprecedented aim of providing a general picture about serial killers on the “other side” of the prison bars, and within the prisons themselves. Besides dealing with the life and activities of the serial killers before their incarceration on international level, it will also put forward a comprehensive picture about the origin and meaning of the term “serial killer”, all the while discussing the general attributes of those who belong to this category. The study will also provide an overview about the main ideas on making distinctions and conducting classification into different types and examines the issues that are related to female serial killers. We will also analyze the actions of serial killers incarcerated within Hungarian prisons and evaluate their behaviour within the institution in order to predict their likely conduct using a completely novel risk assessment procedure. Our study also has a second part in which we will address the peculiarities pertaining to the punishment of life without parole, especially as 67% of the currently incarcerated Hungarian serial killers have received this sanction for their deeds.

Serial killers have always fascinated society. A serial killer is typically defined as a perpetrator who murders three or more people over a period of time. Most reported cases of serial killers come from the United States and Canada. In India, there are few reported cases. We present, to the best of our knowledge, the first Indian case in the literature. The present case is of a 28-year-old man, Surinder Koli. The Department of Forensic Medicine & Toxicology, All India Institute of Medical Sciences, New Delphi handled the forensic study. We present a most unique psychological investigation into the mind of a serial killer.

Abstract:
Abstract Serial killers are much more productive than one-hit wonders, especially when it comes to killing cancer. Natural killer lymphocytes are significant cells in many anti-cancer immunotherapies, such as monoclonal antibody based- and adoptive cell transfer therapies. However, current data show that less than 30% of peripheral blood NK cells are capable of sequentially killing more than one cell, i.e., serial killing. These serial killers are not only capable of killing up to 6 target cancer cells each, but are also reported to deliver lytic hits at a faster rate and with more killing power than their counterpart NK cells. Current methods to identify serial killer NK cells, such as time-lapse cinematography, are laborious, expensive, and require highly skilled expertise and equipment. In order to enrich and grow serial NK cells, an inexpensive, simple assay is needed to detect and isolate them from blood for subsequent in vitro growth. Here we developed a flow cytometric method to identify serial killers via 2-color detection of the cell surface marker CD107a, expressed on the NK cell surface following killing. The NK-92 cell line was incubated with target Raji B leukemia cells for 2-hours, then labeled with one color, AF647, anti-CD107a mAb. Cells were then re-incubated for an additional 4-hours and subsequently labeled with a second color, PE, anti-CD107a mAb. Serial killers labeled double positive for both colors at 6 hours. We found that NK-92s are capable of killing at least 14 target Raji cells each and about 18% of the NK-92s can be identified as serial killers via two-color CD107a mAb labeling.

Abstract:
This exploratory study analyzed how three serial killers (i.e., Bundy, Gacy, and Dahmer) potentially rationalized and justified their murders by applying techniques of neutralization. This paper discusses how the use of these neutralizations also functions as a form of stigma management assisting in the maintenance of a positive presentation of self, thus mitigating responsibility for their crimes. This study conducted a content analysis of data comprised from interviews and case histories of these three serial killers. Based on these analyses, the impression is conveyed that these killers used neutralizations to manage their identities (i.e., present “normal” selves), mitigate responsibility for their actions, and minimize the stigma associated with being labeled a serial killer.

Abstract:
This study aims to examine the psychological and physical violence in Jeff Lindsay’s Darkly Dreaming Dexter. This study analyzed the psychological and social influences on serial killers by using two theories; Milgram’s “Obedience Experiment”, the experiment proved that the majority of people will obey the instructions that came from higher authority without thinking about moral values. The second theory is Sigmund Freud's beliefs about violence and right he thought that violence is a natural thing and there is a strong relationship between violence and right. The research samples are the serial killers and their victims and how theories put forward affect those characters. The main results of this study are the deep analysis of serial killer characters and an understanding of the main point of the motivations for these violent actions. In Darkly Dreaming Dexter, Jeff Lindsay employs the traditional style of psychological horror to give a realistic image of serial killers.

Abstract:
ObjectivesThe aim of this paper is to make a comparative study on serial killers from different countries and link them to one of the traditional seven deadly sins in the Judeo-Christian culture.MethodsFirstly, it was necessary to define each different deadly sin and establish its behavioural correlate. This was achieved thanks to a questionnaire designed to measure the interrate agreement within a sample population. Once the categories were defined (pride, lust, envy, sloth, wrath, gluttony and greed), 30 serial killers from America and Europe were analyzed in order to determine the sin behind their motivation to commit a crime. The evaluation was based on the Coding Guide – Serial Killers Research Project – created by the unit of analysis of criminal behavioural (University of Salamanca, Spain). Afterwards, an ex post facto descriptive non experimental study was carried out to find out the relation between the serial killer's own characteristics and the deadly sin linked to their motivation.Results/conclusionsThe results show a clear predominance of pride, lust and greed as the main motivations within the study sample. As well as some possible dependency relations between killers’ motivations and some other variables, which could be helpful when applied to the offender profiling field like sex or personality.Disclosure of interestThe authors have not supplied their declaration of competing interest.

How do serial killers get away with murder? For years, law enforcement, true crime writers, and journalists have portrayed serial killers as criminal masterminds. But, a closer look at serial homicide cases reveals a different story: Serial killers are opportunists who target marginalized and vulnerable populations. Specifically, they target street sex workers, who become “easy prey” because of their precarious legal status.

Abstract:
Serial killers have been a popular topic in literature for centuries, appearing in works of fiction, non-fiction, and even poetry. In literature, serial killers often represent the dark side of human nature, and their stories often explore the depths of depravity and the psychological motivations behind their heinous acts. Examples of serial killers can be found throughout history and mythology. With all that the public’s attention is usually focused on the serial murders of the latest decades, with the historical cases still generally remaining in the obscure. The reason for that lack of publicity is that serial killers in antiquity are difficult to identify, because the concept of serial killing is a relatively modern one. One of the pleasant exceptions is a book by Debbie Felton “Monsters and Monarchs: Serial Killers in Classical Myths and History” published by University of Texas Press, 2021, 235 pp., ISBN: 978-1-4773-2357-1 (paperback edition). Abstract:
Serial killers fascinate people and books, films, TV series and other types of entertainment increasingly cater to this interest providing sensationalized media coverage. The theory suggests that the boundaries are blurred considerably between fact and fiction, even for the serial killers themselves. For many people, serial killers are both frightening and attractive enough to motivate them to go on tours and visit sites, museums and other attractions that are associated with them. This paper explores the motivation for consuming true and fictional crime including murders and serial killing with an emphasis on literature, films, TV series as well as tourism. A content analysis of the websites of walking tours, museums and other attractions connected to fictional and real serial killers was undertaken, as well as a questionnaire with a niche sample of respondents who commented on their experience and perceptions of serial killers within a dark tourism context. The results suggest that while tourists tend to prefer real serial killers to fictional ones, only a small number of tourists actually engage in this form of dark tourism. Their motivations tend to be more connected to education or entertainment rather than a morbid obsession with death or tragedy.

Abstract:
We have come to a point where the field of fan studies must acknowledge darker, more pathologized and potentially more sinister forms of fandom than we have heretofore. Serial killer fandom is, simultaneously, one of the most visible and least-academically discussed form of fandom, despite a general recognition that certain serial killers are, undeniably, celebrities. Serial killer fanfic is relatively rare, but it certainly exists. In this article, I build on some of the work I have already done on Real Person Fiction, specifically importing the lenses of metalepsis and multimodality as well as the self-conscious intersection between fiction and reality, to look at an example of serial killer fanfic on three platforms—Ao3, Tumblr and Wattpad. The article asks what we can learn from applying a fan studies approach to this phenomenon. Is there anything uniquely problematic about serial killer fanfiction, or is it the same process as what so many already do as a mainstream cultural practice, hypothesizing and imagining the ‘backstage’ of famous serial killers, as we do with all other celebrities? I compare the 2019 film Extremely Wicked, Shockingly Evil and Vile which focuses on Bundy’s private relationship with his long-time girlfriend, his circus-like televised murder trial and his eventual death sentence, with a selection of Ted Bundy fanfiction. Of course, the film does not call itself fanfiction (though several critics have considered it to glorify its subject). I will argue that the distinction between ‘serial killer fanfiction’ and authorized, industrialized and popular forms of serial killer media, actually, has very little to do with the content of the text, and is based on a complex network of assumptions regarding its author, context and modes of production and reception. If this is so, the questions we should ask of serial killer fanfic are, in fact, much broader questions regarding our cultural fascination with serial killer media, challenging the pathologization of a specific, feminine-coded and extremely stigmatized fannish practice.

Abstract:
Theory and empirical research in criminology have paid less attention to intermittency in offending, that is, the brief lapses and sporadic episodes of crime that occur at sometimes unpredictable intervals (Piquero, 2004). This is mainly due to the problem of defining this phenomenon in a common operational way that can be tested empirically. This has thus led to its abandonment in most contemporary definitions of serial murder (Osborn & Salfati, 2014). Most up-to-date definitions have recognized the fact that serial murders are committed as discrete events (Adjorlolo & Chan, 2014). While psychological, sociological, and geographical theories of serial murder can be used to explain cooling-off periods, none of these theories have, thus far, been used in an empirical study. This article examines the phenomenon of cooling-off periods in relation to serial murder. Although definitions of serial murder have changed over the years, there is a consensus that between every two murders there must be a cooling-off period (Homant & Kennedy, 2014; Morton & McNamara, 2005). Unlike previous research, our study, which is based on the Encyclopedia of Serial Killers (Newton, 2005) found that the longest cooling-off period is between the first and the third murders (i.e., a series). We offer some theoretical psychological explanations for this pattern, although we were unable to study it empirically. We conclude that it is less important how different scholars define cooling-off periods; the important thing is that this phenomenon exists and has meaning for understanding, profiling, and even forecasting the time of the next murder.

Abstract:
This article is an overview of the common traits and mental disorders of serial killers, specifically antisocial personality disorder, schizophrenia, autism spectrum disorder, etc. By reviewing pertinent and current and past literature about serial killers and mental disorders, the passage discusses etiology, impacts, symptoms of the disorders. In the result and discussion part, by using various cases and experiences of serial killers, the article lists commons of criminals in different aspects: biological, psychological, and environmental factors. For biological aspect, the brain structure, neuro-chemical in brain, and genetic factors are discussed; for psychological aspect, relevant mental illnesses and personalities (using a Five-Factor Model research) are mentioned; the environmental aspect focuses on criminals’ childhood and their family parenting. Last, the article illustrates the intervention with potential criminals who share the common disorders and traits with serial killers who have been caught. Overall, this review accumulates several previous papers of criminology and antisocial personality disorders, providing further information on intervention of at-risk individuals who are likely to become criminals.

Abstract:
Violence, Consumerism and Ecology in Lotta Lotass’ Min röst skall nu komma från en annan plats i rummet. This article explores the relationship between violence, consumerism and ecology in the novel Min röst skall nu komma från en annan plats i rummet [My voice emerging from another place in the room] (2006), by Swedish author Lotta Lotass. The analysis focuses on how Lotass’ experiments with the gothic subgenre of serial-killer fiction utilize its critical potential to comment on the destructive forces of contemporary society, the history of this society and its possible future. Min röst skall nu komma från en annan plats i rummet conflates the serial killer’s graphic violence against the human body, and anthropogenic violence against nature, with the systematic exploitation of the environment through history as a central theme. The analysis also touches upon how the marketing strategies of the publishing company relate to, and differ from, the thematic content of the novel. While the book’s marketing focused primarily on the character of the serial killer, this article argues that place is a more important concept in the novel, and that the serial killer plot is subordinate to the portrayal of consumerism and environmental destruction. The urban setting, Las Vegas, and the surrounding desert landscape of the southwestern United States is described in the language of nightmarish Baudrillardean hyperrealism— the ultimate consequence of capitalism, in which simulacra replaces reality, and in which the fragmented non-identities of the serial killers may be read as reflective of this condition.

Abstract:
The article considers the development of predictive policing in Russia through the creation of software, based on the use of artificial intelligence (AI) to identify serial killers. Forensic modelling in crime investigation, in particular modern digital twin technology is analyzed. The system of the digital twin is trained on the basis of a set of mathematical models of various level of complexity and specified by results of full-scale experiments. Existing approaches to solving the serial killer portrait problem are investigated. Digital twins in conjunction with machine learning can predict the behavior of the object under study in the future, based on statistical data and accelerate the work of the investigator in the investigation of serial crimes.

Abstract:
Serial murder is a specific type of violent crime that falls into the crime category of multicide. According to the nomenclature of the Federal Bureau of Investigation’s Violent Crime Classification Manual and Academic Researchers for the Classification of Violent Crimes, most serial killers are adults. However, serial murder is also committed by young people, although to a lesser extent. Young serial killers are a topic of relevance in areas such as psychology, criminology, and the justice system. Given that the study of the variables that could be the basis of such multicide criminality is not conclusive, the need for further research is evident. The homicides perpetrated by children and young people point to a social panorama that is alarming due to their young age. This issue is prevalent enough to conduct a review. The performed review concludes the importance of psychosocial factors to better understand the process by which children and young people commit crimes as serious as serial murders. The scope of the problem of serial murders perpetrated by minors is controversial because it often depends on how the number of real cases is counted. Although official statistics indicate the low prevalence of juvenile serial killers, childhood is a period in which antisocial behaviour can have its beginning. Some authors consider that it is not uncommon for the first murder of this type to occur in adolescence. It is important to consider psychopathy as an influential factor in the various forms of serial criminal conduct committed by children and young people. The research works consulted provide evidence of the special relevance of psychopathy in the generation of serious juvenile delinquency.

Abstract:
The existing literature on the killing method of choice for sexually motivated serial killers suggests strangulation as the preferable means of homicide, when the victim is female. When homicide victims are male, however, existing research suggests that firearms and blades are preferable methods of causing death. A case is presented here of a sexually motivated male serial killer who exclusively targeted males and who chose strangulation as his means of killing. Analysis suggests that not only is the psychological constitution of the killer an important factor in understanding how they kill victims but, also, the nature of the sexual act is an important determinant in the method of killing in male on male sexually motivated killing.

Abstract:
Establishing a model of sexual assault reflecting psychosocial and behavioral characteristics of perpetrators of sexual killing and rape is necessary for development in risk assessment and intervention. Methodological variations in defining sexual killing have amalgamated serial and non-serial offenders and perpetrators with direct and indirect associations between killing and sexual arousal. This study defined sexual killing specifying that killing should be directly linked to sexual arousal, and sampled 48 sexual killers, operationalized to include only those engaging in post-mortem sexual interference, with one or two known female victims (non-serial), from prison service national (England and Wales) databases. These sexual killers were compared with 48 non-homicide, life or indeterminately sentenced sexual aggressors on psychological and crime scene characteristics. Contrary to previous research, fatal outcomes were associated with neither stranger victims nor weapon presence; sexual killing was characterized by severity of violence less so than non-fatal assault. Sexual killers more often reported problems with emotional loneliness, empathic concern, and sexual entitlement than the sexual aggressors. Theoretical and applied implications are discussed.
