Abstract:
Serial sectioning (also referred to as serial grinding) is used to investigate the internal structures of three-dimensional (rock or fossil). In this process series of sections are ground or cut in sequence through a specimen to reveal its internal structures. The specimen is ground down against an abrasive surface (e.g., abrasive powder on a sheet of steel or a rotating diamond wheel on a lathe) or cut with a saw blade. The details of each section can be recorded by drawing or photography. A permanent record of each surface can be made by taking acetate peels and mounting them in glass slides (Wilson and Palmer, this volume, Chapter 13). Serial section information can be digitized and reconstructed in three-dimensions using computer techniques (Chapman, this volume, Chapter 15).

This is the first study to assess the influence of sex on the evolution of ischaemic injury and penumbra. Permanent middle cerebral artery occlusion was induced in male (n = 9) and female (n = 10) Sprague-Dawley rats. Diffusion-weighted imaging was acquired over 4 h and infarct determined from T2 images at 24 h post-permanent middle cerebral artery occlusion. Penumbra was determined retrospectively from serial apparent diffusion coefficient lesions and T2-defined infarct. Apparent diffusion coefficient lesion volume was significantly smaller in females from 0.5 to 4 h post permanent middle cerebral artery occlusion as was infarct volume. Penumbral volume, and its loss over time, was not significantly different despite the sex difference in acute and final lesion volumes.

Abstract:
Permanent magnet synchronous motors are increasingly used in the oil industry. These motors need to be made more energy efficient. To do this, it is necessary to optimize the rotor of a synchronous motor by changing the design through topological optimization. Designing an electrical machine as a heuristic process does not guarantee finding the best solution. Methods are needed that complement the experience and intuition of the designer to find the optimal (rational) solution. Topological optimization is currently performed using the finite element method to reduce mass and improve the stiffness of structures. The proposed method allows you to transfer topological optimization to electromagnetic processes in permanent magnet synchronous motors to determine the direction of magnetization and the size of permanent magnets, for a given mass-dimensional parameters. Optimization of the rotor of a serial permanent magnet motor based on a genetic algorithm is proposed. A new topology of the rotor of the motor was calculated and an increase in the torque was obtained by 18.2%, which indicates that topological optimization is promising for synchronous motors with permanent magnets.

Abstract:
In order to show the performance of the outer rotor permanent magnet generator timely and accurately under different input parameters, we coupled two software of outer rotor permanent magnet generator experimental platform based on LabVIEW (Laboratory Virtual Instrumentation Engineering Workbench)-Virtual torque and Three-phase electric parameter tester. Firstly, we picked up the DLL (Dynamic Link Library) of virtual torque and generated an excel file through VB (Visual Basic), through LabVIEW we picked up the excel form to acquire the system input parameters (torque and speed); Secondly, we collected the real-time parameters (voltage and current) of three-phase power meter by means of the LabVIEW serial communication; Lastly, we could see the efficiency of the outer rotor permanent magnet generator on the LabVIEW front panel. The experiment show that we can couple the input and output parameters of the system based on LabVIEW, and we can see the efficiency of the outer rotor permanent magnet generator under each fixed input parameters. This experiment avoid the tedious work that people deal with data, optimize the software system of outer rotor permanent magnet generator experimental platform, and provide the technical support for optimal design of permanent magnet generator.

Abstract:
We report a case of bilateral, permanent subluxation of the lateral meniscus. To our knowledge, the present case is the first reported description of bilateral irreducible anterior dislocation of the posterior segment of the lateral meniscus. This disorder is characterized by a flipped meniscus sign of the lateral meniscus on sagittal magnetic resonance images of the knee joint, with no history of trauma or locking symptoms. A detailed examination of serial magnetic resonance images of the lateral meniscus can help differentiate this condition from malformation of the lateral meniscus, that is, a double-layered meniscus. We recommend two-stage treatment for this disorder. First, the knee joint is kept in straight position for 3 weeks after the lateral meniscus is reduced to the normal position. Second, if subluxation of the lateral meniscus recurs, meniscocapsular suture is then performed. Although subluxation of the lateral meniscus without locking symptoms is rare, it is important to be familiar with this condition to diagnose and treat it correctly.

Abstract:
This research work focuses on the reactive power compensation of the permanent magnet synchronous generator (PSG) in wind power plants. PSG feeds a fixed voltage dc grid through a rectifier bridge. In variable speed operation, the PSG will be able to build torque only in small speed range. This is due to the fixed magnet of the PSG. External reactive power compensation provides an attractive solution to overcome this problem. Different reactive power compensation configurations were examined. Statics synchronous series compensation and a shunt passive filter were chosen as a compensation method. Simulation and implementation of small wind power plant were performed. The wind power plant consists of the synchronous generator, inverter, rectifier, coupling transformers and shunt passive filter. The experimental results agree to the proposed theory and simulation results

Abstract:
In 1948 the international community in reaction to the horrors of the holocaust sought to eradicate genocide forever by creating the 'Convention on the Prevention and Punishment of the Crime of Genocide'. This Convention criminalised the preparation and act of genocide by international law, making all individuals accountable irrelevant of status or sovereignty. But the Convention has not been enough to deter the act of genocide from occurring again, and again, and again. Worst, the international community has been slow to react to cases of genocide. The problem with preventing and punishing genocide is hindered by the power and right of veto held by permanent members of the UNSC. The UNSC has been given the responsibility to maintain international peace and security and is the only entity that can mandate an intervention that overrides the principle of non-intervention. The aim of this thesis is to show that the veto has been a crucial factor in stopping the prevention of genocide, thus it is imperative that the veto change. This study argues that to effectively prevent and punish genocide the veto needs to be barred from use in cases of genocide. It looks at different cases since the Armenian genocide during WWI through to the Darfur genocide which is still in process. The case of Armenia is significant because for the first time, members of the international community were prepared to hold leaders of another state accountable for their treatment of their own citizens. However the collective will to bring justice to those accountable waned coming to an abrupt end in 1923. The holocaust followed in WWII; six million Jews died, and numerous other groups were targeted under the Nazi's serial genocide. The shock of the holocaust led to the Genocide Convention. But thirty years later during the Cold War, Cambodia became embroiled in a genocide perpetrated by the Khmer Rouge. The international community silently stood by. The USSR, China, and the US all had their reasons to stay out of Cambodia, from supporting a regime with a likeminded political ideology to war weariness from Vietnam. In the 1990s, genocides in Rwanda and the former Yugoslavia (Bosnia and Kosovo) followed. The former was neglected by the US's unwillingness to be involved in another peacekeeping disaster. The two genocides in the former Yugoslavia were affected by Russia and China's reluctance to use military force even after the clear failure of serial negotiations. Finally, in 2003 Darfur became the latest tragedy of genocide. Again, Russia and China have been timid of calling the conflict genocide thus avoiding any affirmative action to stop it. These cases all show that where one state is unwilling to be involved in stopping genocide, their right and power to the veto stops or delays the international community from preventing and punishing genocide, regardless of whether the veto is used or merely seen as a threat. Therefore, for future prevention of genocide, the veto needs to be changed to prevent its use in times of genocide.

Abstract:
The interest in the electric vehicles rose recently due both to environmental questions and to energetic dependence of the contemporary society. Accordingly, it is necessary to study and implement in these vehicle fault diagnosis systems which enable them to be more reliable and safe enhancing its sustainability. In this work after a review on problem of faults in the drivetrain of series hybrid electric vehicles (SHEV), a deep investigation on fault diagnosis of AC-DC power converter and permanent magnet synchronous motor (PMSM) have been done as two important parts of traction chains in SHEVs. In other major part of this work, four types of faults (stator winding inter turn short circuit, demagnetization, eccentricity ant bearing faults) of a PMSM have been studied. Inter turn short circuit of stator winding of PMSM in different speeds and loads has been considered to identify fault feature in all operation aspects, as it is expected by electric vehicle application. Experimental results aiming short circuits, bearing and eccentricity fault detection has been presented. Analytical and finite element method (FEM) aiming demagnetization fault investigation has been developed. The AC-DC converter switches are generally exposed to the possibility of outbreak open phase faults because of troubles of the switching devices. This work proposes a robust and efficient identification method for data acquisition selection aiming fault analysis and detection. Two new patterns under AC-DC converter failure are identified and presented. To achieve this goal, four different level of switches fault are considered on the basis of both simulation and experimental results. For accuracy needs of the identified pattern for SHEV application, several parameters have been considered namely: capacitor size changes, load and speed variations. On the basis of the developed fault sensitive models above, an ANN based fault detection, diagnosis strategy and the related algorithm have been developed to show the way of using the identified patterns in the supervision and the diagnosis of the PMSM drivetrain of SHEVs. ANN method have been used to develop three diagnosis based models for : the vector controlled PMSM under inter turn short circuit, the AC/DC power converter under an open phase fault and also the PMSM under unbalanced voltage caused by open phase DC/AC inverter. These models allow supervising the main components of the PMSM drivetrains used to propel the SHEV. The ANN advantages of ability to include a lot of data mad possible to classify the faults in terms of their type and severity. This allows estimating the performance degree of that drivetrains during faulty conditions through the parameter state of health (SOH). The latter can be used in a global control strategy of PMSM control in degraded mode in which the control is auto-adjusted when a defect occurs on the system. The goal is to ensure a continuity of service of the SHEV in faulty conditions to improve its reliability

Abstract:

Abstract:
The general AutoRegressive Integrated Moving Average (ARIMA) model can be written as the sum of noise and exogenous components. If an exogenous impact is trivially small, the noise component can be identified with the conventional modeling strategy. If the impact is nontrivial or unknown, the sample AutoCorrelation Function (ACF) will be distorted in unknown ways. Although this problem can be solved most simply when the outcome of interest time series is long and well-behaved, these time series are unfortunately uncommon. The preferred alternative requires that the structure of the intervention is known, allowing the noise function to be identified from the residualized time series. Although few substantive theories specify the “true” structure of the intervention, most specify the dichotomous onset and duration of an impact. Chapter 5 describes this strategy for building an ARIMA intervention model and demonstrates its application to example interventions with abrupt and permanent, gradually accruing, gradually decaying, and complex impacts.

The Treaty on the Functioning of the European Union (TFEU) has two separate chapters on self-employed persons who move on a permanent or temporary basis between Member States: the chapters on freedom of establishment and freedom to provide services. The central principles governing freedom of establishment and the free movement of services are laid down in the TFEU and have been developed through case law. Important developments have also been brought about through secondary legislation in sectors such as insurance, broadcasting, financial services, electronic commerce, telecommunications, and other ‘services of general economic interest’. This chapter focuses on the broad constitutional principles applicable to every sector.

There are five elements of the offence of theft. Three are actus reus elements: appropriation; property; and belonging to another. There are two mens rea elements: dishonesty and intention to permanently deprive. The prosecution must prove all five elements in order for a conviction of theft to be successful. If one of the elements is missing, any prosecution for theft will fail.

Abstract:
AbstractEconomic approaches and socio-cultural integration are still the most prominent frameworks applied to explain return migration and permanent settlement. In contrast to the bulk of literature focusing on established migrations from poorer to richer regions, the contribution analyses the permanence of emigration from economically highly developed countries. Based on a life-course approach, it highlights the interrelations between life-course domains shaping the intentions of German emigrants to settle permanently abroad, planning to return, and those who are still undecided. The analyses are based on the German Emigration and Remigration Panel Study (GERPS) surveying recently emigrated German citizens. The results show that almost half of those emigrants intend to return home after living for only a few years abroad, whereas every fifth reports permanent settlement intentions in the destination country. Multinomial logistic regressions demonstrate that the status within individual domains of the life course–particularly economic status, family arrangement, as well as existing social interactions–together with previous migration experiences shape the intended length of the current migration project.

Abstract:
Abstract In a multistage serial production line, products with defect can be repaired or reworked to ensure high product quality. This paper studies a multistage serial manufacturing system with quality rework loops. Rework is the activity to repair or repeat the work on the defect parts during manufacturing processes, and it adds to cost and cycle time. This paper introduces an event-based data-enabled mathematical model for a stochastic production line with quality rework loops. The system performance properties are analyzed and permanent production loss due to quality rework loops is identified. The mathematical model and system performance identification methodology are studied analytically through numerical case studies.

Abstract:
Abstract Disruption events such as machine random failures significantly impact the throughput of the line. Maintenance actions could restore the machines to certain health levels. A real-time scheduling of corrective maintenance (CM) is critical to improve the machines’ performance, hence to improve overall system productivity and quality. Due to the limited quantity of technicians or robots in manufacturing system, when, where and assign what type of maintenance is a complicated decision to make. A proper strategy to assign CM can greatly reduce permanent production lost, resource and energy consumption. In this paper, an online task allocation (OTA) method is provided to solve the assignment of CM for a stochastics serial production line. Case study is given to demonstrate the effectiveness of OTA method in assigning CM.

Abstract:
This paper describes a pilot study to investigate the influence of FDPs on platelet aggregation in a small cohort of patients (N = 12) undergoing systemic thrombolytic therapy with streptokinase (600,000 I.U. or 1,500,000 I.U. delivered over 30 minutes) for acute myocardial infarction.Serial pre- and post-therapy blood samples were anticoagulated with sodium citrate, and whole blood aggregation studies carried out over 24 hours using a Crono-log 540 aggregometer and the standard adenosine diphosphate (ADP), adrenalin (A), collagen (C) and ristocetin (R) aggregating agents. Results, in the form of mean percentage voltage change from baseline voltage change, measured at 8 minutes after addition of aggregant, are presented for the cohort at times in Figure 1. Serial aggregometry tracings for one representative patient are shown in Figure 2.Clearly comparison of the 1 hour and 18 hour results for each aggregating agent shows a variable but consistent return towards baseline (at FDP < 8 μg/ml) as the FDP concentration drops. This implies that, provided the same platelet population is involved, there is no generalised permanent platelet defect consequent on systemic STK therapy. Coulter counter measurements do not indicate the increase in platelet number that would suggest a large influx of new platelets.

Abstract:
Abstract X-ray tomography is a promising technique that can provide micron level, internal structure, and three dimensional (3D) information of an integrated circuit (IC) component without the need for serial sectioning or decapsulation. This is especially useful for counterfeit IC detection as demonstrated by recent work. Although the components remain physically intact during tomography, the effect of radiation on the electrical functionality is not yet fully investigated. In this paper we analyze the impact of X-ray tomography on the reliability of ICs with different fabrication technologies. We perform a 3D imaging using an advanced X-ray machine on Intel flash memories, Macronix flash memories, Xilinx Spartan 3 and Spartan 6 FPGAs. Electrical functionalities are then tested in a systematic procedure after each round of tomography to estimate the impact of X-ray on Flash erase time, read margin, and program operation, and the frequencies of ring oscillators in the FPGAs. A major finding is that erase times for flash memories of older technology are significantly degraded when exposed to tomography, eventually resulting in failure. However, the flash and Xilinx FPGAs of newer technologies seem less sensitive to tomography, as only minor degradations are observed. Further, we did not identify permanent failures for any chips in the time needed to perform tomography for counterfeit detection (approximately 2 hours).
