Abstract:
This chapter examines the impact of debt leveraging on the long-run development of Castile. Compared to the other great European powers after 1500, Spain's fiscal policy showed no signs of imperial overstretch. Its finances were no worse—and better in a variety of ways—than those of other countries at the height of their power. According to several criteria, Castilian finances were managed with greater probity than even those of Britain, with primary surpluses being maintained during wartime and rapid improvements in the budget position when debts accumulated. There is also no evidence of the supposedly deleterious effects of serial default; after each payment stop, the Crown's revenues increased, suggesting no decline in fiscal capacity.

Full text
Abstract:
By observing the authorial intentions on the part of the novelist and the adapted film’s producer, screenwriter, director, and cast, Chapter 11 examines the intratextual process at work in the transformation of Philip Roth’s novella The Dying Animal to the big screen as Elegy. The notion of serial authorship can capture the creative interaction of intentions characteristic of the multi-source nature of film adaptation, whose products serve two texts: the source literary work and the screenplay derived from it. The essay considers the hints of Roth’s personal views and autobiography implied through his narrator, David Kepesh, and this character’s relationships with women, as well as through the implied author’s own position as a writer—a self-conscious status the film does not engage.

Abstract:
Although it did not set about to do so, the ICTY played a key role in catalyzing the creation of Serbia’s war crimes chamber (SWCC) and position of war crimes prosecutor. Once this happened, the ICTY Prosecutor seized the opportunity that emerged, devoting substantial attention to capacity-building initiatives. The record of Serbia’s war crimes institutions is decidedly mixed, as this chapter elucidates. Serbia has gone farther in prosecuting wartime atrocities than would have been the case without the ICTY. Yet recent years have brought a significant reversal of early progress in the context of heightened political pressure on the Office of the War Crimes Prosecutor (OWCP).

Abstract:
This essay explores Mormonism’s paradoxical relationship with American free market capitalism. Examining a series of case studies from Mormonism’s past, as well as several important Mormon economic thinkers, I argue that there is no single “Mormon” position on economics. Rather, there are a variety of positions, from libertarian individualism to market-suspicious communitarianism, that various Mormons at various times have marshaled theological and historical resources to support. This complex constellation of ideas not only debunks the myth of Mormonism as a monolith but also sheds light on a wide range of contemporary Mormon economic behavior, from the state of Utah’s proliferation of con artists and multilevel marketing schemes to the church’s large welfare system.

All books in this flagship series contain carefully selected substantial extracts from key cases, legislation, and academic debate, providing able students with a stand-alone resource. Article 102 only applies to undertakings in a dominant position. Thus, whether or not an undertaking holds a ‘dominant position’ is of central importance to Article 102. This chapter discusses the following: the definition of a dominant position; the definition of a dominant position in the case law; establishing dominance; market definition in Article 102 cases; and assessing market power.

Full text
Abstract:
This chapter presents the main real-estate indices used worldwide for investment purposes and on which derivatives contracts are very likely to be issued. It is important to know the type of real-estate index based on the method of construction. The chapter contains a description of the main real-estate indices used in real-estate derivatives contracts, indices that are built using various methodologies such as hedonic, repeat sales, appraisal, or transaction based. Themethod of construction of the real-estate index should be taken into consideration when modelling the real-estate indices. The stylized facts about the real-estate indices are important not only for a better understanding of the real-estate investmentmarket per se but also for better model construction for pricing real-estate derivatives. Serial correlation is amajor feature of real-estate indices as demonstrated comprehensibly in this chapter and in general this is positive short-term, and negative medium-term. Longer-term serial correlationmay switch back to being positive, albeit weakly positive, or disappear as in the case of daily calculated indices. Taking into account the stylized features of real-estate indices is necessary to avoid model risk.

Full text
Abstract:
This chapter scrutinizes the many ways in which positive psychology contributes to therapeutic understandings of salvation. Building on attention to the way in which the work of Martin Seligman has influenced approaches to happiness and forms of counselling, the chapter examines two Christian examples (one Protestant—Joel Osteen, one Roman Catholic—Christopher Kaczor) of positive psychology’s influence on Christian practice and critically explores the appropriateness of such use. It then explores a second example of positive mood through examining how television comedy is received and used as a contribution to fostering well-being. Using The Big Bang Theory, the chapter notes how religion appears as a marginal but meaningful element within the series, and examines the significance of the main thrust of the series in both its content and reception.

Abstract:
Exploring the position and interaction of poets’ tombs within Greek epigram collections, this chapter illustrates how poetry books could function as imagined literary graveyards, through which readers were invited to stroll in their mind. After contemplating a series of poems on playwrights by Dioscurides, it reflects upon the likely arrangement of poets’ tombs within Meleager’s and Philip’s Garlands. While Meleager combined a long series of epitaphs on poets at the beginning of his funerary book (concluded by a sequence of self-epitaphs), Philip excerpted primarily epitaphs starting with alpha, which permitted him to place them within the first section of his alphabetically organized anthology.

This casenote reviews and discusses the series of decisions regarding sanctions imposed by the UN Security Council against Yassin Abdullah Kadi, as implemented in the EU legal order. In this series of cases, the EU Courts at different times take different positions regarding the relationship of the UN and the EU legal order, as well as their power to review EU acts implementing Security Council sanctions and (indirectly) the sanctions themselves. The series of cases marks a watershed moment in UN Security Council targeted sanctions, forcing EU member states to disobey them and eventually leading to the creation and strengthening of an internal UN review mechanism, the Office of the Ombudsperson.

Abstract:
The introduction sets out the scope of the book and excavates a ‘poetics’ of the interview form and practice. Examining the interview’s liminal position in the literary imagination across the last 150 years, the book analyses what this might tell us about conceptions of literature, authorship, and reading publics in modernity. The introduction offers a number of ‘propositions’ for studying interviews: considering the implications of the interview on modes of subjectivity, technologies of inscription, mediation, and communication. Less a taxonomy than a series of exploratory interventions, these propositions offer ways of thinking about an unwieldy topic which can be approached as form and practice.

Abstract:
This chapter discusses how women physical educators began to reevaluate their collective position against intercollegiate, commercial, and hypercompetitive sports for their students. Particular attention is given to a series of National Institutes on Girls' Sports, jointly sponsored by the Division for Girls and Women's Sports (DGWS) and the United States Olympic Committee (USOC) that took place during the 1960s. At these clinics, educators, recreation leaders, and other interested parties learned the necessary tools to teach sport skills to their respective charges and to encourage them to engage in “the right kind of competition.” The emergent groundswell of support was an important antecedent to the subsequent developments in women's sport.

Abstract:
This chapter provides the reader with an introduction to the book’s fundamentals. It begins with a challenge to the conventional view that public inquiries are ineffective, which stresses that inquiry scholarship has simply not been rigorous enough to justify that position. The book’s response to that lack of rigour, in the form of its research design and theoretical framework, is then set out and justified. Thereafter three outputs are summarized as the book’s main contributions. First, an updated conceptual account of what the public inquiry is in relation to contemporary public policy and governance. Second, a central argument that inquiries produce certain types of policy learning that reduce our vulnerability to future crises. Finally, the identification of a series of factors that influence inquiry success and failure.

Abstract:
This chapter addresses the sustainability of debt. A systematic analysis based on the International Monetary Fund's (IMF) methodology to evaluate fiscal sustainability shows that Castile was able to service its debts in the long run. While liquidity was scarce during periods of intense warfare, years of relative peace brought large surpluses. The data collected from Castile's annual fiscal accounts produced new yearly series of revenue, military expenditure, short-term debt issues, and short-term debt service. The resulting database spans a full 31-year period—enough to employ modern quantitative techniques. This analysis provides strong evidence that Castile's fiscal position in the second half of the sixteenth century was on a solid footing. The chapter then assesses whether the events that led to major downturns in Castile's financial fortunes could have been anticipated.

The Concentrate Questions and Answers series offers the best preparation for tackling exam questions and coursework. Each book includes typical questions, suggested answers with commentary, illustrative diagrams, guidance on how to develop your answer, suggestions for further reading, and advice on exams and coursework. This chapter explores important issues in company management and corporate governance, starting by examining the role of directors and shareholders (and the relationship between them) and the separation of ‘ownership and control’. Since the early 1990s, the governance of listed companies has been dominated by self-regulatory codes (currently the UK Corporate Governance Code). This chapter examines how these codes operate and considers key themes in corporate governance, including the role of non-executive directors and auditors; the position of institutional investors; and executive remuneration.
