Abstract:
This special issue was inspired by the Digital Approaches Towards 18th–20th Century Serial Publications conference, which took place in September 2017 at the Royal Academies for Sciences and Arts of Belgium. The conference brought together humanities scholars, social scientists, computational scientists, and librarians interested in discussing how digital techniques can be used to uncover the different layers of knowledge contained in serial publications such as newspapers, journals, and book series. In this introduction, we discuss some of the key concepts the reader will find throughout this volume, how they fit into the digitization and analysis workflow a digital humanities scholar might employ, and where the different contributions to this volume come into play.

It is the aim of the present work to study the published articles in the A Construção Moderna, the first Portuguese magazine, edited from the year 1900 to 1919, dedicated both to architecture and to building in general. In such an important period of time for the Portuguese history and culture, as the turning of the century was, this pioneer experience introduced the ideias, the concepts and the materials that sustained the architectural thought and production in the beginning of the modernism in Portugal. In the turn of the 19th to the 20th century, Portugal was an undeveloped country. With its fragile economy and an almost non-existent industry, no wonder that the urban development and the consequent architectural languages appeared rather late in this country. In a cultural atmosphere still very much influenced by the 19th romanticism, the characters of such trend, were mainly the educated people seduced by the positivist doctrine and by the realistic aesthetics. So the modernism question is introduced in Portugal through two different ways of both artistic and cultural influences: on the one hand the French context, through the Academy (where the national architects took their training), the racionalism, the beaux-arts references and the cosmopolitan «Haussmann city»; on the other hand, the 19th English scenery, through the Arts and Crafts, the gothic revival and the cultural tradicionalism. These educated men of the last decade of the 19th century got their inspiration in these two sources. They were engaged in the rebirth of the values of the national identity and in defending the traditional culture, the picturesque and the folklore, trying to define a national example of architecture. The magazine A Construção Moderna appeared under these circumstances through the will and effort of these three men: Nunes Colares, typographer and the project guide; Melo de Matos, engineer and skilful mathematician; and Rosendo Carvalheira, architect with a certain romantic spirit and extremely dedicated to the national cause.Throughout their careers, they fixed the great topics of the architectural culture of this period: the social and cultural importance of the architects; the art critics; the ‘Portuguese house’ model; the restore politics; the urban development; the ‘cheap houses’; the Portuguese ‘style’; and the introduction of the new technologies and new building materials in the civil construction, among many other problematics

Abstract:
The authors proposes to do a qualitative valuation for published articles from 1998 to 2002, in magazines The Journal of Bone and Joint Surgery Am and Brazilian Orthopaedic Magazine. After searching in literature, the articles were classified according to methodological quality and they were organized by chronological order. The articles of two magazines were read, classified and checked by the authoress and another valuator due to the levels in Directive Project. As result, by valuation of tables with statistical analysis, in first years the articles of level C and D were predominant in Brazilian Orthopaedic Magazine, in JBJS the articles were separeted equitably among all levels. In 2002, both magazines increased the percentual of level A articles. The authoress concluded that two magazines presented different aspects of publication in that period of time, however both publications have showed methodological improvement. The results also showed that the standards of methodological excellence must be known among authors and health profissionals. Terms which are frequently used in epidemiology and scientific methodology were identified in annexed and the levels of evidence of analysed articles were defined.

Abstract:
This doctoral thesis examines the literary series [collection litteraire], considered at one and the same time as a form of publication defined and redefined by the publisher since the invention of the printing press and as a paratextual component that has the ability to act on the process of reading the text: An original aspect of this work is that it combines in the same analysis fields of knowledge that are rarely studied together: the history of the book and of publishing, the sociology of literature and in particular the theory of the literary institution, the theory of paratextuality and reader response theory. This thesis examines separately the two dimensions of the topic but follows a logical progression that concludes with a third section. The first section explores the hypothesis that the literary series is the outcome of a long process of definition and specialization which has accompanied the evolution of French publishing and literature. It then goes on to examine cases illustrating the "convergence" of the two, such as the "Bibliotheque Bleue", the "Bibliotheque universelle des romans", the "Bibliotheque Charpentier", the collections of livraisons illustrees published in the 1850's, the "Collection Michel Levy" and a few collections published by Flammarion and Fayard. Following a rereading of the Genettien paratexte (1987) that reviews and further refines the parameters of the concept (its boundaries, its components and their functions) in order to increase its scope of action, the second section explores in depth the essence of the encounter between the series and literature itself and proposes a theory of the series which positions it in relation to a community of readers and recognizes a different functioning, different risks and effects depending on whether it is destined for a specialized public or the general public. Finally, the third section picks up the historical thread that the first section suspended at the beginning of the 20th century

This work has the objective to analyze the journalistic contemporary narratives in Folha de S.Paulo newspaper and the interface with the melodrama and the serial publication issued in the newspapers from the end of the XIX century to the beginning of the XX century. The newspaper conveys news, not only in the referential way but similar to the seriated narratives way.The printed media does not work in real time like the television, and that makes difficult for the reader the attendance of the facts. That makes us inquire why, nowadays, the seriated narratives are dominant in the television media and why they became a re-encoded paradigm. Why do these articles remain in the reader s memory? To look for answers to these questions, it is necessary the diachronic study of the journalism and how the serial publication structure migrates for other media, the television mostly. In some journalistic programs, the emphasis relapses on the melodramatic gender and the serial publication. For that, the studies of Marlyse Meyer, Thomasseau, and Huppes are essential. Also Morin, Gruzinski, Laplantine, Amálio Pinheiro, Martín-Barbero and Iuri Lotman, through the semiotics of the culture, substantiate this work. Lotman starts from the concept of what text is the least unity of the culture and it has internal definite organization. The journalism, like text of the culture, has distinctive aspects, but while mixing codes it interbreeds and produces new messages to different readers. The Russian theorist points out three functions of the cultural text that corroborate with this research: the communicative function refers itself to the organization of the laws of the language; the creative function that produces the dynamic of the culture and when the text are translated and transmitted into another representational system, they transform themselves into re-encoded messages; and the third function is related to the culture memory. Other concepts of the semiotics of culture like the culture codes, system that shape the culture, border, will base this work. Halbwachs and Zumthor help to reflect about memory. For the first one, the memory allows to remake and to rebuild experiences tested previously and the individual memory is related to the collective memory. For Zumthor, memory and oblivion produce a dynamic created with new codes. This makes possible the substitution of a text for others and this transformation is associated to the selection and fixation of aspects to be maintained. The journalism dramatizes many facts, rescuing elements of the culture to which seem to be present only in other media, making it become a half-breed code. The transformation of the piece of news in serial publication is predominant in the current press and the journalistic narrative is the paradigm reencoded

The novel Quincas Borba, written by Machado de Assis, has two different versions published in two different distinctive holders: the newspaper, as a serial publication, and the book. Both versions carry important differences that reveal the main subject observed in the present work: the formation of the reader under educative and evolutive focus, acknowledged in a comparison between the two versions. That comparison has also revealed the process of narrative composition of Quincas Borba. The investigation puts in doubt and discusses the role of the reader in the different holders, noticing that the reading attitudes vary and structure themselves in different ways in the two versions. We intended to investigate, in the first chapter, the reading in different levels of perception, or the differences between the serial publication and the book in the act of reading; in the second chapter, we searched in the novel the model of reader roused by the narrative, as much as the differences of the narrated matter in the crossing serial publication book; finally, in the third chapter, the question of the authorship and the reading in the fictional context, comprehending that the changes made between one version and the other are, in their majority, adjustments played by the author in the search of a model-reader of his work this is a question that receives enormous attention by the contemporary critics and that finds in Machado de Assis works a productive investigation to the development of the various studies about the subject. To the effective rendering of this work, it was necessary to approach theoretical hypothesis about serial publications, being Marlyse Meyer the main reference. It was also necessary to search Umberto Eco s considerations about the model-reader, a kind of reader foreseen by the author and printed in the text writing. Other aspects of the work of Machado de Assis were observed through the reading of the vast bibliography about the writer and his production, among which we detach the studies of John Gledson, Hélio Seixas Guimarães and Alfredo Bosi

Abstract:
AbstractThis chapter approaches serial literary autofictions as a distinct variant of autofictional writing. While discussions of life writing often focus on male authors, the chapter redresses this imbalance by considering women writers, specifically the works of Dorothy Richardson, Doris Lessing, and Rachel Cusk. The approach is new in exploring the autofictional in serial, literary works, and tracing connections across an author’s oeuvre. Such a focus leads to an extended understanding of autofiction and the autofictional as challenging autobiographical unity and coherence. The chapter distinguishes between different forms of seriality (including series, serial, and serialized life narratives), and argues that serial publications and structures enhance literary and autofictional tendencies in that they draw attention to the complexities of autobiographical representation.

Full text
Abstract:
The basic attributes of any industrial machines and systems are productivity rate and quality of products. Attributes of productivity are related to the theory of reliability let alone the theory of efficiency of machines. Publications in area of productivity of the industrial systems enable to write the productivity theory for the industrial machines and systems. This theory shows the links between productivity, reliability, technological and technical parameters and the structure of machines with complex designs. Automated production lines are considered industrial systems for the collection of serial and parallel stations arranged according to a certain structure that depends on a technological process of machining parts. Manufacturers require correct and clear mathematical models to calculate the productivity of the automated lines with high accuracy. The mathematical models for productivity rate of industrial systems with complex design define their structures according to the level of output. This paper presents an analytical approach to the productivity rate of automated lines with stations and mechanisms that display different failure rates and processing times. The typical designs of industrial automated lines are considered by three types of structure: multi-station ’s automated line of serial, parallel action and serial-parallel action. All designs can be presented using linear, circular and rotary arrangements. The analytical equations allow for the output of the automated lines to be modeled with different failure rates for the stations and mechanisms yielding results close to the actual productivity values.

Abstract:
Since 1989, the issue of adapting to the new mode of apparition, circulation and consumption of information has become of major interest for librarian's theoretical concerns. Under different appearances, from the programmatic document to the enthusiastic description of software solutions, passing through various shapes of vague or semi-articulate imperative, the digitalization of the libraries has progressively imposed itself as a central theme, widely debated in publications form within the field or on the colloquies' or specialized conferences' agenda. Our intervention aims to investigate in depth this discursive universe, following two main aspects. Firstly, we will try to determine to what extent this discourse is mirroring the general pattern of adapting to the new technological requirements, as it is shown in the western libraries' examples of success and good practices. Secondly, we aim to analyze if and in what way the digitalization process determines changes at other levels, e.g. to what extent the digitalization mantra determines a change in the librarian profession or in the organizational environment. Our approach will proceed in three successive steps. Firstly, following the experience of libraries of the same profile from Europe and the United States of America, we will try to identify a pattern of transition from the traditional to the digitalized library. The second step is dedicated to the analysis of the Romanian serial publications in library science, employing both qualitative (discourse analysis) and quantitative (term frequency analysis) methods in order to determine the semantic structure of the digitization phenomenon. Finally, we will try to establish a connection between theory and reality, which means identifying whether the discourses' normative nature towards digitalization has become or not a common practice in the university libraries.

Abstract:
1Department of Biomedical Engineering, Federal College of Dental Technology and Therapy. 2Department of Computer Science, University of Nigeria, Nsukka. 3Department of Computer Science, Enugu State University of Science and Technology. In this work, we highlighted the merits of IoT in tracking of Biomedical Equipment during and post the Covid-19 era. When the healthcare industry is poorly equipped, and the available medical equipment are not put in optimal use, it results in high mortality rate and low life expectancy of the population. In the beginning of this COVID-19 pandemic, lots of hospitals in developing nations were poorly equipped to contain the rise in COVID infected patients. Tracking of some medical equipment for prompt use became a problem as those that were not in regular use were difficult to be located to attend to patients. A visit to many hospitals in south-eastern Nigeria shows that there are a lot of obsolete and non-functional equipment in some healthcare facilities. Some of the equipment developed minor fault, but the institutions lacked experienced technicians with adequate skills to fix them back to working state. One of the ways to reverse this trend of lack of medical equipment in some hospitals is by managing them properly in order to locate and efficiently make the use of the available ones. This can be done by tracking the equipment for adequate repairs or overhauling and efficiently utilizing them for the purpose they are meant for. IoT technologies such as barcodes, Radio Frequency Identifications (RFIDs), Global Positioning System (GPS) Asset tracking and Near Field Communication (NFC) tracking are possible solutions to the existing poor health technology management conditions in our hospitals. This will put a stop to theft of hospital equipment, reduce wastage of time in locating those equipment in the hospital, optimize routine servicing of the equipment, which subsequently means a reduction in expenditure; as well as trigger a signal for decommissioning of the equipment when it has elapse its full life cycle. Tracking of biomedical equipment in our hospitals using IoT embedded technologies will assist to optimize the use of the available ones. This will ensure adequate health technology management operations in our hospitals, and help in the forecast for developmental budgets in the health sectors of the states in the country; which will result in robust policy making and implementation in the health sector. Abstract:
Institutional facilities often determine students’ choice of enrolment into tertiary institution and level of academic performance Rudhumbu,Tirumali and Kumari, (2017). Thus institutions invest more on installation and maintenance of facilities like business enterprise to compete favorably with their counterparts in order to have good number of students and to improve institutional image and status (Gibbs, 2001). Despite institutions stringent requirements of students’ academic results from high school, parents are more concerned of institutional image; safety and campus security. This paper focused on institutional facilities as predictors of students’ choice of enrolment into tertiary institutions for further studies. The study population comprised of year two students in all fields of study from each level of tertiary institutions (college of education, polytechnic and university) in Lagos, Nigeria. It also examined the impact of available facilities ranging from library facilities and services, internet facilities, campus accommodation and proximity to the library and lecture rooms, lecturers experience and academic qualifications are inclusive facilities examined in this study. The study also mirror on the admission requirements of the various schools under study, the structural facilities need of all categories of students in the study; the place of the physically challenged students inclusive. The study adopted survey designed research with the aid of both self structured questionnaire, observation and interview as research instruments for clarification. The services of research assistance hinged on the distribution and collation of questionnaires for the study. Statistical Package for the Social Sciences (SPSS) software was used to analyse the data. Abstract:
Contrary to the negative predictions, the graphic arts industry keeps continuing its growth. The modern world is transferring information through digital platforms leading to decrease of the serial publications on paper (newspaper, magazines etc). But on the other hand, packaging industry is increasing its revenue by high numbers. In the same way as for the whole industry, many predicted that paper use will also decrease, as for a long period of time (still partly present) paper was thought of as being killer of trees. Today, along with new findings, paper is becoming more popular with EU Commission banning single use plastics. Paper as a substrate is becoming popular in packaging industry, mainly due to being suitable for both organic and material recycling. However, due to lack of some functional properties, materials are often coated. Coating as a process includes covering of a surface by another substance. The coatings processes are present in various industries and are intended to enhance properties of the base materials. In the graphic industry the coating process is often called varnishing, due to the resins used as a coating material. Varnishing is used to improve rub resistance and provide varnished material with special effects (combination of gloss and matte surfaces). Applicability and functionality of the coatings is achieved using various materials, among which are nano-engineered materials. Results of various researchers show benefits of introducing nanocomposites in the packaging industry by improving prints’ resistance to degradation by UV irradiation, improving barrier to water vapour and enabling packaging surface to inhibit microbes’ growth. To conclude, coatings development and application plays a significant role in the material development, as it can provide common materials with improved properties, as well as enhanced aesthetics. At the same time, application of coatings could present some obstacles in both materials and organic recycling, and for that reason development of coatings should include evaluation of recyclability of the coated product as well as the characterization of coating’s functionality.

Abstract:
Throughout its history, the Utah Geological Survey (UGS) has strived to produce reports of the highest technical and editorial quality. To achieve that end and establish the basis for a certain degree of uniformity among the various publication series of the UGS, the first edition of the Guide for the Preparation of Reports for the Utah Geological Survey (the Guide) was published as UGS Circular 85 in 1992. The Guide was updated, revised, and published as a second edition (Miscellaneous Publication 03-7) and third edition (Circular 105) in 2003 and 2012, respectively. This fourth edition of the Guide retains much of the original text of the previous editions but incorporates revisions and additional text to address moving the technical review process into the digital age. Hardcopy review was not feasible during the COVID-19 pandemic and new review procedures regarding digital documents have since been adopted. Additionally, in 2021 the Data Management Program was created to address the increase in web applications and therefore the Website section has been substantially revised. Appendix B, Disclaimers for Use in UGS Publications, has also been revised by consolidating disclaimers having similar text and function, reducing the number from 11 to 7 disclaimers. Finally, various minor revisions reflect the ongoing evolution of English grammar and style.

Abstract:
The present report is the outcome of a research project commissioned by Zero Waste Scotland and carried out by the Just Transition Hub (JTH), University of Dundee, with the objective of understanding the ways in which the cost-of-living crisis has affected the attitudes and behaviours of individuals and communities towards a transition to a low-carbon economy in Scotland. We define the transition as encompassing both energy transition and the transition to a circular economy, so in this report the word “transition(s)” means both the referred transitions. We define the scope of “justice” to cover three dimensions – distributive, recognition and procedural. Briefly, distributive justice concerns the ideal of a fair share of the benefits and costs of the transition among different communities and stakeholders. Recognition justice respects the proper acknowledgement of marginalised individuals and communities who may be living in deprived urban areas. Procedural justice respects inclusion and effective participation of all, including marginalised actors, in public debate and decision-making. The study involved a literature review in narrative form (chapter 2) and a smallscale exploratory study (chapters 3 and 4), using a multi-strategy approach that included seven individual semi-structured expert interviews, four semi-structured citizen/consumer focus groups and one semi-structured expert focus group. Both the literature review and the empirical research adopted a thematic analysis approach, with clear research objectives identified in a standardised analysis framework. The present research is part of a broader series of investigations commissioned by Zero Waste Scotland to understand circular economy perspectives and sustainable decision-making in times of crises to help inform Zero Waste Scotland’s communication, engagement and further research for a just transition. The present study is complemented by parallel research being conducted by the University of Highlands and Islands with a focus on rural communities.

Abstract:
The subject of the research in the publication is the method of parents-children conflicts construction and the typology of parents’ images in teen serials of Ukraine and Poland. For analysis such series as “School” (Ukraine, 2017), “First sparrows” (Ukraine (2020), “Sex, Insta and ZNO” (Ukraine, 2021), “Sexify” (Poland, 2021) have been chosen; that allows drawing parallels between these media products made at different time, specify the methods of reflecting the conflicts between parents and children, peculiarities in constructing the parents’ images in each of the series, typology of the images due to psychological problems actualized in the series. The purpose of the research is to specify media narratives in representing the parents-children conflict and images formation based on the material of teen series. The purpose of the research can be reached due to the application of content analysis as a system research technique for objective description of the available content of communication in media material; such methods of analysis as comparison, synthesis, narrative analysis. Due to the use of the above methods, the following results have been reached: summarized the typology of conflicts in the series specified outlining those storylines and characters related to these conflicts, in particular, the conflict of opinions, values and behavior; determined and systemized typological images of parents in the series being researched – aggressive parents, parents imposing their own vision of the future on a child, making them implement parents’ own dreams and comply with the stereotypes topical for them; asocial parents, parents who cannot cope with their own lives, etc.: write the narrative strategies of formation of these kinds of images. Thus, the research outlines particular media psychological problems related to the narratives in teen series made in Ukraine and Poland. The perspective of the research is the engagement of larger volume of media materials of the thematic group, determination of new problematic areas to deepen media psychological context. Key words: teen series, narrative, typology of images, conflict.
