Abstract:

Abstract:
Over the last two centuries, mass-produced serial narratives, especially those created for women, have been vilified or ignored by literary and cultural critics. Serial narratives, which include continuing stories published in installments and independent tales that form part of an overarching plot, have been maligned for their content, for the material realities of their mass production, and most simply for their popularity. Serial texts aimed at female audiences have been subjected to further criticisms: they have been judged as being trivial or insipid in content and as lacking aesthetic merit or cultural weight. Despite these criticisms, serial narratives were exceedingly popular with audiences in the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries and by the end of the twentieth century became the dominant mode of storytelling across nearly all media. Popularity, far from being a reason to disparage these works, suggests the enormous power serial narratives have to both reflect and shape the culture that produces and consumes them. This cultural agency has long been overlooked, and this study hopes to change that. Serial narratives, it will be argued, train readers and viewers in various ways to actively participate in the narrative and in parallel ways in real life, an outcome especially noteworthy for modern female audiences. Ongoing and repetitive, serial narratives invite long-term engagement that enables audiences to participate imaginatively in the story itself and to embody the attitudes and behaviors of the serial protagonists in their own lives. In addition, because they are published on a potentially infinite basis, serial narratives are a medium through which modern audiences come to understand themselves and the world they inhabit. This connection between the reading and viewing choices of the modern citizen and their lived experiences, what I call serial modernism, provides a way of understanding how serial texts enact this connection particularly in relation to the modern woman’s increasing sense of agency and her continually evolving identity. Several serial texts from different eras and in different media that powerfully engage with evolving expectations of American women over the last 150 years will crystallize this connection: Louisa May Alcott’s Little Women series (1868-1886) and her serialized novel Work (1873); two silent film serials, The Perils of Pauline (1914) and The Hazards of Helen (1914-1917); two teenage sleuth series, Carolyn Keene’s Nancy Drew (1930-2003) and Margaret Sutton’s Judy Bolton (1930-1967); and Sara Paretsky’s adult detective series V.I. Warshawski (1982-present).

Abstract:
Rapid Serial Visual Presentation (RSVP) is a concept that changes every day reading into an efficient way of gathering information. Due to this innovative new way of reading, the importance of interaction that allows the user to interact with RSVP in an intuitive manner is needed to help the reader reach its full reading potential. This thesis puts existing RSVP programs to the test with the help of six participants in different ages. Through in-depth interviews with the participants, this thesis presents a possible new way of displaying information and interacting with RSVP. From analysing the results of the in-depth interviews, a prototype is created.

Abstract: Time series are sequences of values measured at successive time instants. They are used in several domains such as agriculture, medicine and economics. The analysis of these series is of utmost importance, providing experts the ability to identify trends and forecast possible scenarios. In order to facilitate their analyses, experts often associate annotations with time series. Such annotations can also be used to correlate distinct series, or look for specific series in a database. There are many challenges involved in managing annotations - from finding proper structures to associate them with series, to organizing and retrieving series based on annotations. This work contributes to the work in management of time series. Its main contributions are the design and development of a framework for the management of multiple annotations associated with one or multiple time series in a database. The framework also provides means for annotation versioning, so that previous states of an annotation are never lost. Serial Annotator is an application implemented for the Android smart phone platform. It has been used to validate the proposed framework and has been tested with real data involving agriculture problems

Abstract:
This thesis considers the development of an accurate dynamic model for two industrial manipulators. The accuracy of available instrumentation for recording sensor-motion data required the application of practical methods for improving the estimation bounds. This thesis presents some methods for improving the estimation accuracy of the reduced order dynamic model, particularly with regard to the importance of a correct formulation for the base parametric set and the dependance of parameter estimation accuracy on the torque sensitivity.
The thesis also experimentally implement an algorithm for trajectory optimization for estimation by the LMS adaptive law. Practical methods are suggested for carrying out the optimization.
Results are presented based on experimentation conducted on an electric and a hydraulic manipulator; a brief description is also provided on the software that was developed for this purpose. Identification results in one case were seen to closely approximate those previously determined by explicit measurements by Khatib et al. Finally, a comparison between ordinary PD control and feedforward control using the available model shows the promise of actual ability to implement model based control. However, a comparison of the results of the control performance between a direct drive manipulator and a geared manipulator indicate that unmodelled dynamics play a central role in increasing the error bounds of the identified parmeters. Mailier, Pascal. "Serial clustering of extratropical cyclones." Thesis, University of Reading, 2007. http://ethos.bl.uk/OrderDetails.do?uin=uk.bl.ethos.501344.

Full text
Abstract:
The clustering in time (seriality) of extratropical cyclones is responsible for large cumulative insured losses in western Europe, though surprisingly little scientific attention has been given to this important property. This study has investigated and quantified the seriality of extratropical cyclones in the Northern Hemisphere using a point-process approach. A possible mechanism for serial clustering is the time-varying effect of the large-scale flow on individual cyclone tracks. Another mechanism is the generation by one 'parent' cyclone" of one or more 'offspring through secondary cyclogenesis. A long cyclone-track database was constructed for extended October to March winters from 1950 until 2003 using 6-hourly analyses of 850-mb relative vorticity derived from the NCEP/NCAR reanalysis. A dispersion statistic based on the variance-to-mean ratio of monthly cyclone counts was used as a measure of clustering. It reveals extensive regions of statistically significant clustering in the European exit region of the North Atlantic storm track and over the central North Pacific.

Abstract:
In this thesis we discuss the design and implementation of Digital Signal Processing (DSP) applications in a standard digital CMOS technology. The aim is to fulfill a throughput requirement with lowest possible power consumption. As a case study a frequency selective filter is implemented using a half-band FIR filter and a bireciprocal Lattice Wave Digital Filter (LWDF) in a 0.35 µm CMOS process. The thesis is presented in a top-down manner, following the steps in the topdown design methodology. This design methodology, which has been used for bit-serial maximally fast implementations of IIR filters in the past, is here extended and applied for digit-serial implementations of recursive and non-recursive algorithms. Transformations such as pipelining and unfolding for increasing the throughput is applied and compared from throughput and power consumption points of view. A measure of the level of the logic pipelining is developed, i.e., the Latency Model (LM), which is used as a tuning variable between throughput and power consumption. The excess speed gained by the transformations can later be traded for low power operation by lowering the supply voltage, i.e., architecture driven voltage scaling. In the FIR filter case, it is shown that for low power operation with a given throughput requirement, that algorithm unfolding without pipelining is preferable. Decreasing the power consumption with 40, and 50 percent compared to pipelining at the logic or algorithm level, respectively. The digit-size should be tuned with the throughput requirement, i.e., using a large digit-size for low throughput requirement and decrease the digit-size with increasing throughput. In the bireciprocal LWDF case, the LM order can be used as a tuning variable for a trade-off between low energy consumption and high throughput. In this case using LM 0, i.e., non-pipelined processing elements yields minimum energy consumption and LM 1, i.e., use of pipelined processing elements, yields maximum throughput. By introducing some pipelined processing elements in the non-pipelined filter design a fractional LM order is obtained. Using three adders between every pipeline register, i.e., LM 1/3, yields a near maximum throughput and a near minimum energy consumption. In all cases should the digit-size be equal to the number of fractional bits in the coefficient. At the arithmetic level, digit-serial adders is designed and implemented in a 0.35 µm CMOS process, showing that for the digit-sizes, , the Ripple-Carry Adders (RCA) are preferable over Carry-Look-Ahead adders (CLA) from a throughput point of view. It is also shown that fixed coefficient digitserial multipliers based on unfolding of serial/parallel multipliers can obtain the same throughput as the corresponding adder in the digit-size range D = 2...4. A complex multiplier based on distributed arithmetic is used as a test case, implemented in a 0.8 µm CMOS process for evaluation of different logic styles from robustness, area, speed, and power consumption points of view. The evaluated logic styles are, non-overlapping pseudo two-phase clocked C2MOS latches with pass-transistor logic, Precharged True Single Phase Clocked logic (PTSPC), and Differential Cascade Voltage Switch logic (DCVS) with Single Transistor Clocked (STC) latches. In addition we propose a non-precharged true single phase clocked differential logic style, which is suitable for implementation of robust, high speed, and low power arithmetic processing elements, denoted Differential NMOS logic (DN-logic). The comparison shows that the two-phase clocked logic style is the best choice from a power consumption point of view, when voltage scaling can not be applied and the throughput requirement is low. However, the DN-logic style is the best choice when the throughput requirements is high or when voltage scaling is used.

Shacklock, Zoe Ruth. "The kinaesthetics of serial television." Thesis, University of Warwick, 2017. http://wrap.warwick.ac.uk/101540/.

Full text
Abstract:
This thesis argues for the centrality of kinaesthesia to the narrative structures and modes of address of contemporary serial television drama. Scholarly and popular accounts of ‘quality’ television privilege audiovisual aesthetics, valuing these programmes for the ways they seemingly depart from established televisual form. In objection to this dominant scholarly narrative, this thesis explores how these programmes can be theorised through their shared use of a kinaesthetic reading strategy, in which the movement and spatial dynamics of the body are fundamental for the construction of narrative meaning, emotional impact, and political engagement. The first chapter of this thesis considers what kinaesthesia has to offer our existing theories of televisual storytelling, aesthetics, and engagement, through a review of the critical literature. The following three chapters each focus on a different thematic element of the kinaesthetics of serial television drama. The second chapter discusses Game of Thrones (HBO, 2011–) and Lost (NBC, 2004-2010) as examples of the ‘vast narrative’: massive, sprawling stories often explicitly concerned with journeys and mobility, which appeal to kinaesthesia as a means of making their vast storyworlds coherent. The third chapter considers how television dramas both reiterate and resist the normative elements of kinaesthesia, focusing on the embodied politics of gender identity and desire in Outlander (Starz, 2014–) and Transparent (Amazon, 2014–). The final chapter questions how kinaesthesia functions as a mode of empathetic engagement with television, and the extent to which contemporary serial dramas such as Hannibal (NBC, 2013-2015) and Sense8 (Netflix, 2015-2017) present it as a transformative mode of relating to other people. The thesis is invested in presenting kinaesthesia as a productive method for the analysis of television, in which attention to the embodied dynamics of narrative and engagement has much to offer our understanding of screen media, the embodied politics of identity, and the evaluative frameworks of television scholarship. Television has always been a medium defined and experienced through metaphors of mobility, a property that persists in the ways in which serial dramas exploit the storytelling potential of the moving body. By offering kinaesthesia as framework for understanding how serial television speaks to its audience, this thesis proposes a method that is attuned to both the storytelling strategies of these highly contemporary texts, and to the broader theoretical and evaluative history of the medium itself.

Connelly, Peter J. M. "The representations of serial killers." Thesis, University of Stirling, 2011. http://hdl.handle.net/1893/3438.

Full text
Abstract:
In this thesis, I have analysed representations of a selection of fictional and factual serial killers from Thomas de Quincey to Thomas Harris’s Hannibal Lecter, from Mary Shelley’s Frankenstein to the autobiographical narratives of real life serial killers Carl Panzram, Donald Gaskins and Ian Brady. My analysis of these texts identifies the portrayals of serial killers in terms of representations as aesthetic, existential, socially othered phenomena. The thesis proceeds from the premise that serial killer narratives often obscure the existential brute reality of murder. As such, I examine serial killing vis-à-vis attempted explanatory shifts in such narratives which represent serial murder and serial killers in terms of aesthetic, psychopathological, moral/religious/supernatural and socio-political phenomena, and I investigate the implications of these shifts. I focus initially on Romantic ideas of the self, and in the relationship between the ‘outsider’ artist/poet and the textual emergence of the figure of the solitary ‘serial’ murderer in the early nineteenth century, particularly in relation to De Quincey’s aesthetic murder essays. Subsequent fluctuations of the representation of serial killing between mental-health, law-and-order and political/social discourses are discussed in relation to the subsequent texts. I conclude by examining cognitive dissonance theory, A.E. Van Vogt’s description of the Violent Man, and James Gilligan’s theories on violence, in order to propose a possible synergetic response to narratives and representations of serial killers and serial killing.

In this study we intend, through film analysis, to understand how the movie industry has represented the Serial Killers, discussing the aspects that compose it and that constituted diverse views on the subject. Immediately film analysis led us to reflect on representations spread over the years about the Serial Killers, for better understanding of what aspects are present in these productions and appearing in the social imaginary. To this problematization noting as cinema dialogue with the cinema itself, in addition to treating social characteristics that are actually identified as belonging to these individuals, that is, showing how the film itself through the decades approached this subject. Therefore, we propose a study of image analysis that seeks to understand how the movie industry represents some questions, thus revealing aspects that make up an imaginary cast often by violent scenes of murders that boost the attendance of crowds to theaters. In this study will seek an analysis of how serial killers are represented in film, or are prepared to note how the representations of these individuals in the social imaginary and that impacts and changes caused by the strategies of language/esthetics of narrative film, so that the film turned out to be the main reference on the subject.

Guest, Elizabeth. "Automatic reconstruction from serial sections." Thesis, University of Edinburgh, 1994. http://hdl.handle.net/1842/30233.

Full text
Abstract:
In many experiments in biological and medical research, serial sectioning of biological material is the only way to reveal the three-dimensional (3D) structure and function. Many authors have reported how serial sections can be registered by means of fiducial markers or otherwise, but there have been only a few studies of automated correction of the sectioning distortions. In this thesis solutions to the registration problem are reviewed and discussed, and a solution to the warping problem, based on image processing techniques and the finite element method (FEM), is presented. The aim of this project was to develop a fully automatic method of reconstruction in order to provide a 3D atlas of mouse development as part of a gene expression database. For this purpose it is not necessary to warp the object so that it is identical to the original object, but to correct local distortions in the sections in order to produce a smooth representative mouse embryo. Furthermore, the use of fiducial markers was not possible because the reconstructions were from already sectioned material. In this thesis we demonstrate a new method for warping serial sections. The sections are warped by applying forces to each section, where each section is modelled as a thin elastic plate. The deformation forces are determined from correspondence between sections which are calculated by combining match strengths and positional information. The equilibrium state which represents the reconstructed 3D image is calculated using the finite element method. Results of the application of these methods to paraffin wax and resin embedded sections of the mouse embryo are presented.

Abstract:
Business Administration
Ph.D.
This dissertation is comprised of three separate entrepreneurship papers. Paper 1, "Entrepreneurial Heuristics...", found that being mentored, rather than either having extensive higher education or more work experience, was primarily responsible for entrepreneurs acquiring the simplified decision rules (heuristics) that can be useful to them in their business pursuits. The study also found that entrepreneurs do not seem to switch their decision making processes from a "rational man" (thorough) mode to a more abbreviated, heuristic mode as some current thinking suggests. Also in Paper 1 this researcher presented and utilized a 27 item heuristics scale which was used to identify "use of heuristics" by the entrepreneurs studied. Paper 2, "Female Serial Entrepreneurs...", examined the characteristics of female serial entrepreneurs (SE's) as a group of growing size and importance. Three areas- business size, hours worked in the business, and amount and type of capital raised- were explored through contrasting female SE's with female non-SE's and male SE's. The primary findings were as follows: the businesses of female SE's are larger than those of female non-SE's, and female SE's in the professional, technical and scientific services industry borrow more debt than female SE's in this industry, but they do not work longer hours than female non-SE's. It was also found that female SE businesses, in the industries examined in the study, have come to rival male SE businesses in size, as measured in revenues. Paper 3, "The Serial Entrepreneur Dilemma...", explained a conundrum: why serial entrepreneurs do not seem to outperform novice entrepreneurs. A literature review is given consisting of the scholarly thinking about the causes of the conundrum, and then three hypotheses are tested to explore the dilemma. It was found that looking at serial entrepreneurs and novices over time, rather than cross-sectionally, helps to explain the conundrum: the SE's are willing to take losses early on (thus not performing higher than the novices) in expectation of future profits. It was also found that in slow-moving industries, serial entrepreneurs performed much better than novice entrepreneurs in revenues, whereas in fast-moving industries the difference between the two groups in performance was negligible.

Pistorius, Micki. "Psychoanalytical approach to serial killers." Thesis, University of Pretoria, 1996. http://hdl.handle.net/2263/32402.

Full text
Abstract:
The phenomenon of serial killers is increasing world wide. During the past decade the most memorable cases of serial homicide in South Africa have been those of the "Norwood serial killer", the "Station Strangler", the "Cleveland serial killer", "The Gaunteng serial killer" and the "St Charles serial killer". The enigma surrounding serial killers is the so-called "lack of motive'' for the murders. No extrinsic motive such as robbery, financial gain, revenge or passion exists as there usually would be in the case of other murders. The available literature indicates that several theories have been proposed to explain the origin of serial homicide, but none can explain sufficiently to the author why one person with a certain type of background and exposed to a certain environment becomes a serial killer, whilst another, with a similar background and circumstances does not. The theories that are discussed are the socio-cultural factors, Ressler's motivational model, systemic factors, demonic possession, neurological factors, psychogenic factors and fantasy. In this thesis the author attempts to answer the question "What is the origin of serial homicide" by applying selected aspects of the psychoanalytic theories of Freud and Melanie Klein on two case studies of South African serial killers. The author formulates twenty nine statements of her own, based on the theories of Freud and Klein which she applies to the two case studies. The cases of the "Station Strangler" in Mitchell's Plain, Cape province, and the "St Charles serial killer" in Donnybrook, KwaZulu Natal are selected. Both of these serial killers are organized in their modus operandi, but the "Station Strangler" is a ego-dystonic killer and the "St Charles serial killer" a ego-syntonic serial killer. The method of research is a qualitative case study method. The author divides the selected aspects of Freud and Klein's theories into categories and analyses the two cases presented according to these categories. In the final chapter she draws maps to illustrate the psychoanalytical developmental paths of serial killers in general and for each of the two cases. Multiple data sources are used for example interviews with the serial killers and their families, police dockets, court proceedings and psychiatric records. Multiple data sources, explanation building and replication by way of multiple case studies are employed to ensure construct validity, internal validity and external validity respectively. Reliability is supported by entering the data in a South African Police Service data base. In conclusion the author compares the differences and similarities between the two case studies, and discusses the statements which are supported by this research. She also recommends that those statements which are not supported, be discussed in consecutive case studies. The statements are generalized to all serial killers.

Abstract:

The design and implementation of a synthesizable model of the Serial Communication Interface and Synchronous Serial Interface, which constitutes the Port C of Motorola DSP56002 is presented in this report. They serves as a full duplex serial interface to other DSPs, processors, codecs, digital-to-analog and analog-to-digital converters and other transducers. The SCI block is able to handle a data rate of 5Mbps in Synchronous mode and 625Kbps in asynchronous mode for a 40MHz clock. It supports five word formats including a multidrop mode for multiprocessor systems. SSI provides a data rate of 10Mbps for the same 40 MHz clock. The design includes a programmable on-chip or external baud rate generator/interrupt timer for the SCI and a clock generator and frame Sync generator for the SSI.

The thesis focus on arriving at a full functional description of individual blocks included with Port C from the data sheets and product users manual. From this operational description a behavioural model was developed. The structure and implementation is based on the Motorola DSP56002 with additional support for a variable data-width. The model is written completely in behavioural VHDL with a top-down approach and the model was verified and validated.

Abstract:
This thesis is a comparative study of Rapid Serial Visual Presentation (RSVP) which is a dynamic method of presenting text. The aim of the study was to investigate how to improve the user friendlyness of RSVP for today's mobile phones and technology. To fulfill the purpose, the aspects of the method which could be improved was investigated and then implemented in a prototype. The prototype was tested in an experimental study after which the result was analyzed and compared with previous studies of RSVP. The new features that were implemented in this study showed no significant improvements in usability compared with previous studies, but proved to be more user-friendly in comparison with normal spatial reading.

Full text
Abstract:
X-ray crystallography is a form of microscopy that allows the three-dimensional arrangement of atoms belonging to molecules within crystals to be determined. In this method, a crystal is illuminated with a beam of X-rays and the diffracted amplitudes resulting from the illumination are measured and computationally processed to enable the electron density of the unit molecule, or the unit cell, constituting the crystal to be calculated. The recent development of the X-ray free-electron laser (XFEL) provides new routes for determining molecular structures via its ability to generate intense but brief X-ray pulses. These new instruments enable diffraction measurements to be obtained from crystals that have a small number of unit cells, referred to as nanocrystals, and molecular structure determination via this technique is known as serial femtosecond nanocrystallography (SFX). This thesis is concerned with the characterisation of diffraction data obtained from SFX experiments and the techniques for reconstructing the electron density of the molecule from such data. The noise characteristics of diffraction measurements from nanocrystals is developed. Methods for directly inverting nanocrystal diffraction to obtain the electron density of the molecule are analysed and an approach to ameliorate the effect of noise is proposed and evaluated by simulation. A model for diffraction by nanocrystals that include the effects of different unit cell arrangements and incomplete unit cells on the crystal surface is also developed and explored by simulation. The diffraction by finite crystals is shown to be equal to the incoherent average over a set of unit cells that contain different molecular arrangements related to the symmetry of the crystal at hand. The problem of image reconstruction under this circumstance is investigated. The more general problem of reconstructing multiple, unrelated, objects from their averaged diffraction is also explored and uniqueness properties along with reconstruction algorithms developed. The problem of reconstructing multiple, related, unit cells is studied and preliminary results are obtained. These results show that iterative phase retrieval algorithms can in principle be adapted to reconstruct the electron density of a crystalline specimen from the data obtained in SFX and the retrieval of phases from the diffracted intensity averaged over multiple objects is feasible.

Abstract:
The typical approach for finding audio recordings, such as music and sound effects, in a database is to enter some textual information into a search field. The results appear summarized in a list of textual descriptions of the audio files along with a function for playing back the recordings. Exploring such a list sequentially is a time-consuming and tedious way to search for sounds. This research evaluates whether searching for audio information can become more effective with a user interface capable of presenting multiple audio streams simultaneously. A prototype audio player was developed with a user interface suitable for both search and browsing of a hierarchically organized audio collection. The audio recordings are presented either serially (serial output mode) or simultaneously (parallel output mode), spatially distributed in both vertical and horizontal planes. Users select individual recordings by simply pointing at its source location with a remote control. Two within-subjects experiments were conducted to compare the performance of the audio player's output modes in audio search tasks. The experiments differ in the maximum number of audio recordings played simultaneously - either four or six. In both experiments, search tasks were performed about 25% faster using parallel audio output than using serial output. Over 80% of participants preferred searching parallel output. The results indicate that using parallel output can be a valuable improvement to the current methods of audio search, which typically use only serial output.

Abstract:
Bit-Serial architecture and Gallium Arsenide have essentially been mutually exclusive fields in the past. Digital Gallium Arsenide integrated circuits have increasingly adopted the conventional approach of bit-parallel structures that do not always suit the properties and problems of the technology. This thesis proposes an alternative by using a least significant bit first bit-serial architecture, and presents a group of 'cells' designed for signal processing applications. The main features of the cells include the extensive use of pseudo-dynamic latches for pipelining, modularity, and programmability. The logic circuits are mainly based on direct-coupled FET logic. They are also compatible with silicon ECL circuits. The target clock rates for these cells are 500MHz, at least ten times faster than previous silicon bit-serial circuits. The differences between GaAs and silicon technologies meant that the cells were designed from circuit level upwards. Further to these cells, a multi-level signaling scheme has been developed to substantially alleviate off-chip signaling. Synchonisation between signals are simplified, improving even further on the conventional bit-serial system, especially at the high bit-rates encountered in GaAs circuits. For on-chip signals, a single phase clock scheme has been developed for the GaAs cells, which maintains the low clock loading and high speed charactersitics of the pseudo-dynamic cells, while substantially simplifying clock distribution and generation. Two novel latch designs are proposed for this scheme. Test results available have already proved the concepts behind the two-phase clocking scheme, the latches, and the multi-level scheme. Further tests are taking place to establish their speed performance.

Abstract:
Geographic profiling is a technique used by crime investigators and the police to examine the locations of a connected series of crimes, to determine the most probable area of the offender’s residence. Using both qualitative and quantitative methods, Geographic profiling helps to better interpret the spatial behavior of an offender and focuses the investigation on a specific and smaller area of the community. From the abovementioned and from previous research, we know that Geographic profiling is useful in serial crimes such as in cases of serial murderers, serial rapists etc. Having as a point of reference Malmö, because of the many shooting incidents that have happened through the last years, in this master thesis dissertation, a systematic literature review on Geographic Profiling was conducted while at the same time the usefulness of the method in locating the serial murderers was examined.

Full text
Abstract:
Hardening distortions are unwanted changes in shape and dimension that arise during hardening of steel components. Uncontrolled distortions induce random errors to the manufacturing process, and have a strong negative impact on manufacturing costs. The distortions are not only caused by the hardening process, several factors from previous manufacturing steps including the component geometry itself contribute to varying extent. The aim of the current work is to investigate the main influencing factors on hardening distortions for serial produced gears. The investigations were done on two different types of gears for heavy-duty transmissions, crown wheels for the rear axle central gear and main shaft gears for the gearbox. The steel was produced using either continuous casting or ingot casting. For rectangular continuously cast steel, the effect of disabling magnetic stirring of the steel melt during casting was investigated, finding a strong reduction of gear runout for crown wheels. Segregations in crown wheels produced from the top and bottom of ingots were shown to go in opposite directions, producing opposite back-face tilts. For crown wheels quenched one at a time, influences of stacking level on the hardening tray were found, indicating an impact from small variations in the carburizing process, despite identical quenching conditions. For main shaft gears, horizontal loading gave considerably less roundness and runout errors but increased flatness errors compared to vertical loading. This thesis shows the complexity of the distortion phenomenon and how several factors interact and contribute to the final result. It is shown that factors with significant impact on hardening distortions for one component may be less important for another component. With this in mind, each type of component to be hardened should be produced by a manufacturing chain where each process step is carefully chosen with respect to minimizing distortions.

Abstract:
Public perceptions about serial homicide are more mythical than fact. Myths about serial homicide are perpetuated through several sources, especially the entertainment media which is a dominant and influential mythmaker. The number of films depicting serial killers and serial killing themes has increased dramatically in recent years. However, the reality of these films is debatable. This research examines the reality, or lack thereof, of the most recent films involving a serial killing theme. Hickey provides a wealth of statistical information on a number of serial killers and serial killings. A content analysis of the fifty top grossing serial killer movies made between 1980 and 2001 was conducted using variables from Hickey research. Research shows similarities and differences between variables, however, results concludes the entertainment media does not accurately portray serial homicide.

Abstract:
Utility company libraries are scattered geographically, but serve a specific information clientele. These libraries are supported by parent companies or government entities that provide electrical, gas, and/or telephone services. In this era of increased regulation, and financial difficulties for all types of utilities, their respective library budgets are shrinking. Thus reliance on each other for interlibrary lending is increasing; but there is no ILL network, formal or informal, and no organization that would various types of utilities other than the represent the Public Utility Division (PUD) of the Special Libraries Association. The PUD decided to create a Union List of Serials for the libraries of those members wishing to participate in the study. This investigation involved gathering the data for that list, and providing the Union List itself to the PUD. The library holdings were then analyzed to determine the resource capacity in terms of title diversity and collection overlap. The potential contributions to an interlibrary loan network were examined for the entire group, between various segments of the list, and between the trade association libraries and their individual constituents. The existing interlibrary loan policies of the participating libraries were also examined and included in the Union List of Serials provided to the Division. Other studies have shown the relationship between collection size and overlap is linear and positively correlated, but have not dealt specifically with overlap in serial collections. This study tried to determine whether this relationship also existed for this group and for serial collections.

Abstract:
The complexity of integrated circuit (IC) designs continues to increase with the constant advancement of process technology and decrease of feature size in a relentless effort to achieve better performance and reach new milestones. However, with the increasing density and complexity comes a higher probability of defects occurring as well as a higher impact of these defects on the overall performance. Testing, thus, proves essential in order to guarantee defect-free designs. Effective and efficient testing in terms of both cost and time becomes essential as well because of the continually rising cost of testing. Abstract Serializer-deserializer (SerDes) devices or serial-link transceivers, which represent the device-under-test (DUT) in this thesis, are no different. Since the interface is the bottleneck in the performance of various systems, efforts continue to push for faster, smaller, and more power-efficient SerDes, leaving it with stringent specifications to meet. This leads to it being susceptible to the higher defect probability we just mentioned. As these are wireline transceivers, the robustness of the interconnects is especially critical. These defects that affect the interconnects are troublesome due to the fact that it is relatively easy for the fault to be masked which would indicate a non-existent fault within the design itself. In this thesis, we propose a test receiver that is capable of putting the interconnects under test in both DC-coupled and AC-coupled scenarios in compliance with the IEEE-1149.1 and IEEE-1149.6 standards.

Vousden, Janet. "Serial control of phonology in speech production." Thesis, University of Warwick, 1996. http://wrap.warwick.ac.uk/3026/.

Full text
Abstract:
The aim of this thesis is to further our understanding of the processes which control the sequencing of phonemes as we speak: this is an example of what is commonly known as the serial order problem. Such a process is apparent in normal speech and also from the existence of a class of speech errors known as sound movement errors, where sounds are anticipated (spoken too soon), perseverated (repeated again later), or exchanged (the sounds are transposed). I argue that this process is temporally governed, that is, the serial ordering mechanism is restricted to processing sounds that are close together in time. This is in conflict with frame-based accounts (e.g. Dell, 1986; Lapointe & Dell, 1979), serial buffer accounts (Shattuck-Hufnagel, 1979) and associative chaining theories (Wickelgren, 1969). An analysis of sound movement errors from Harley and MacAndrew's (1995) corpus shows how temporal processing bears on the production of speech sounds by the temporal constraint observed in the pattern of errors, and I suggest an appropriate computational model of this process. Specifically, I show how parallel temporal processing in an oscillator-based model can account for the movement of sounds in speech. Similar predictions were made by the model to the pattern of movement errors actually observed in speech error corpora. This has been demonstrated without recourse to an assumption of frame and slot structures. The OSCillator-based Associative REcall (OSCAR) model, on the other hand, is able to account for these effects and other positional effects, providing support for a temporal based theory of serial control.

Abstract:
Haematocrit in the high normal, as well as the pathological, range may be a risk factor for the development of stroke. As stroke is one of the most important causes of physical handicap attempts to reduce its incidence further are justified. Repeated small volume venesection without volume replacement is a simple method of haematocrit reduction which could be used in a controlled trial if shown to be safe and practicable. Forty three male patients (33 evaluable) with haematocrit above 0.46 without primary proliferative or secondary polycythaemia, were entered into an open study to assess the clinical, haemorheological and haematological sequelae of serial venesection. Haematocrit was reduced from a median of 0.49 to 0.385 which necessitated removal of 2.75 1 of blood (range 1.5 - 4.25 1). This resulted in a marked reduction in blood viscosity which correlated significantly with the change in haematocrit. Although haematocrit has been postulated to affect blood pressure through an effect on blood viscosity and hence peripheral resistance, no clinically significant reduction in blood pressure was observed. Despite producing a slight reactive thrombocytosis, serial venesection was not shown to increase thrombogenic activity. Bleeding time was prolonged significantly and there was a trend for a reduction in platelet adhesion. The reduction in platelet adhesion correlated significantly with the reduction in haematocrit. Maintenance of haematocrit below 0.45 necessitated further venesection on average once every 2 months during follow-up for one year. Two patients with a previous history suffered further strokes which were considered unlikely to be related to venesection. One patient had worsening of angina and 2 patients experienced intermittent palpitations when haematocrit was reduced to 0.40; these events were considered possibly due to an increase in cardiac output as a consequence of lowered haematocrit. Except in patients with cardiac disease, repeated small volume venesection without volume replacement is a safe and practicable method of reducing haematocrit.
