Abstract:
In a reanalysis of data from Cousineau and Shiffrin (2004) and two new visual search experiments, we used a likelihood ratio test to examine the full distributions of reaction time (RT) for evidence that the display size effect is a mixture-type effect that occurs on only a proportion of trials, leaving RT in the remaining trials unaffected, as is predicted by serial self-terminating search models. Experiment 1 was a reanalysis of Cousineau and Shiffrin's data, for which a mixture effect had previously been established by a bimodal distribution of RTs, and the results confirmed that the likelihood ratio test could also detect this mixture. Experiment 2 applied the likelihood ratio test within a more standard visual search task with a relatively easy target/distractor discrimination, and Experiment 3 applied it within a target identification search task within the same types of stimuli. Neither of these experiments provided any evidence for the mixture-type display size effect predicted by serial self-terminating search models. Overall, these results suggest that serial self-terminating search models may generally be applicable only with relatively difficult target/distractor discriminations, and then only for some participants. In addition, they further illustrate the utility of analysing full RT distributions in addition to mean RT.

Abstract:
AbstractThe functions of the somatosensory system are multiple. We use tactile input to localize and experience the various qualities of touch, and proprioceptive information to determine the position of different parts of the body with respect to each other, which provides fundamental information for action. Further, tactile exploration of the characteristics of external objects can result in conscious perceptual experience and stimulus or object recognition. Neuroanatomical studies suggest parallel processing as well as serial processing within the cerebral somatosensory system that reflect these separate functions, with one processing stream terminating in the posterior parietal cortex (PPC), and the other terminating in the insula. We suggest that, analogously to the organisation of the visual system, somatosensory processing for the guidance of action can be dissociated from the processing that leads to perception and memory. In addition, we find a second division between tactile information processing about external targets in service of object recognition and tactile information processing related to the body itself. We suggest the posterior parietal cortex subserves both perception and action, whereas the insula principally subserves perceptual recognition and learning.

Abstract:
The purpose of the present experiment was to identify the effects of altering the order of training for a memory search task in old and young adults. We provided subjects with extensive practice on consistently mapped (CM) and variably mapped (VM) versions of a memory search task. Half of the subjects in each age group received CM training followed by VM training and the other half received VM first followed by CM. Based on previous findings (Fisk, Rogers, and Giambra, 1990), in which older adults did not switch to a more efficient search strategy (i. e., from serial exhaustive to serial self-terminating) we predicted that older subjects who received VM training first would not adopt the most efficient strategy on subsequent CM training compared to old adults who received the CM training first. The results supported our prediction: namely, the comparison slopes were shallower (i. e., more efficient) for the older adults who received CM training first, relative to those who received VM training prior to the CM training. Order of practice did not significantly affect the performance of the young adults. These data have important implications for the development of training programs in which subjects will be required to learn several task components.

Abstract:
Observers searched for a Gaussian-windowed patch of sinewave grating (Gabor pattern) through displays containing varying numbers of other such patterns (distractors). When the spatial frequencies of target and distractors differed by ± 2 octaves and their orientations by ± 60°, the search proceeded spatially in parallel irrespective of whether the target could be discriminated in terms of spatial frequency differences alone, orientation differences alone, or their combination. However, when target and distractors differed by only ±.5 octave in spatial frequency and by ± 15° in orientation, the search was serial and self-terminating, again irrespective of the nature of the target-distractor differences. These findings show that, contrary to some suggestions, the preattentive detection of targets defined by conjunctions of spatial frequency and orientation may occur, but only when the spectral distance between target and distractors allows their encoding by independent mechanisms.

Abstract:
AbstractDopaminergic interplexiform cells in the retina of the blue acara were investigated using an antiserum against tyrosine hydroxylase and PAP visualization. In whole-mount preparations, we observed a homogeneous distribution of cell bodies throughout the retina without any indication of regional specialization. At the fine and ultrastructural level, we studied the morphology of labeled telodendria within the outer plexiform layer. Apart from contacts with horizontal cell perikarya and bipolar cell dendrites, we observed direct contacts, mostly in the form of close appositions, with cone pedicles and rod spherules. Quantitative evaluation and reconstruction of serial sections showed that all cone pedicles and most rod terminals were approached in this way. The dopaminergic pathway terminating on horizontal cells and photoreceptors is discussed with respect to the localization of dopamine receptors in the outer retina, and the control of adaptive changes such as retinomotor movements, spinule formation, and horizontal cell coupling.

Abstract:
Flies and other insects routinely land upside down on a ceiling. These inverted landing maneuvers are among the most remarkable aerobatic feats, yet the full range of these behaviors and their underlying sensorimotor processes remain largely unknown. Here, we report that successful inverted landing in flies involves a serial sequence of well-coordinated behavioral modules, consisting of an initial upward acceleration followed by rapid body rotation and leg extension, before terminating with a leg-assisted body swing pivoted around legs firmly attached to the ceiling. Statistical analyses suggest that rotational maneuvers are triggered when flies’ relative retinal expansion velocity reaches a threshold. Also, flies exhibit highly variable pitch and roll rates, which are strongly correlated to and likely mediated by multiple sensory cues. When flying with higher forward or lower upward velocities, flies decrease the pitch rate but increase the degree of leg-assisted swing, thereby leveraging the transfer of body linear momentum.

Abstract:
A person's race could be a very important feature that is used to differentiate between own-race and other-race faces during a visual search. Using well-controlled gray-scale images of people's faces without salient relatively lower level race-specific features, such as color of hair and eyes, we investigated whether or not there is a visual search advantage for other-race over own-race faces. We found that both Chinese (n = 48) and Caucasian (n = 48) participants used serial and self-terminating search techniques, but neither racial group used pop-out or parallel search methods. An advantage favoring other-race faces was observed in visual search among Chinese participants, whereas neither advantage nor disadvantage was observed for other-race faces among the Caucasian participants. We discuss the mechanism underlying visual search to identify race of faces. Further, although the current data do not exclude the possibility of cultural diversity across races in regard to visual search, our findings point to the importance of observer's race in cross-cultural studies in which visual search of human faces is used.

Due to the increasing requirement of multimedia applications, the demand for data transmission bandwidth is increased. It is very efficient to make the use of low cost coaxial cable for high-speed link transmitting. In this thesis, we will implement a parallel scrambler and a high-speed serial link transmitter with adaptive termination resistors and pre-emphasis. A very systematic parallel scrambler design methodology and architecture is proposed to overcome the limitation of serial scrambler. A new XOR-DET-C2MOS cell is proposed to speed up the operation speed of the parallel scrambler. Measurement results show that 40Gbps parallel scrambler with 16 outputs can be achieved by using 0.18um CMOS process. We also propose a digital approach of adaptive termination resistors and architecture in the transmitter. It can match the characteristic impedance of coaxial cable automatically from 75Ω~45Ω to reduce the reflection caused by the mismatch of impedance. Moreover, the architecture of pre-emphasis is improved to make the method of tuning pre-emphasis current more easy. The transmitter with pre-emphasis can handle coaxial cable length from 1-meter to 15-meter. The performance of transmitting data at 8Gbps over the 5-meter coaxial cable is achieved. The overall circuit is implemented in TSMC 0.18um 1P6M process.

Abstract:
In her original Feature Integration Theory, Anne Treisman proposed that we process a limited set of basic preattentive, visual features in parallel across the visual field. Binding those features together into coherent, recognizable objects requires selective attention of item after item. In Treisman’s original conception, searches were divided into parallel feature searches and other serial self-terminating searches. Wolfe’s Guided Search model added the idea that the deployment of attention could be guided by preattentive information. In this view, the efficiency of search is related to the effectiveness of guidance on a continuum from perfect guidance, in the case of simple feature pop-out, to no guidance when no basic features distinguish target from distractors. This chapter reviews the evidence for different basic, preattentive features and describes the current understanding of the rules of guidance, the mechanics of visual search, and the relationship of these processes to visual awareness.

The rule enshrined in Article 52 of the Vienna Convention is not a mere statement of principle: international practice confirms that it reflects a customary rule which, however, does not play a significant role as regards coerced peace treaties. Cases such as those concerning the Lusaka Ceasefire Agreement between Congo and Uganda or the Military and Technical Agreement between Serbia and KFOR show that victims of coercion tend to waive their claim as to the validity of peace treaties, since they have a strong interest in their implementation. The possibility of such a waiver is discussed in the light of Article 45 of the Vienna Convention and of the peremptory nature of the prohibition of the use of force.

Titles in the Core Text series take the reader straight to the heart of the subject, providing focused, concise, and reliable guides for students at all levels. This chapter focuses on two of the most important categories of entitlement that may be acquired over other people's land: easements and profits à prendre. Each of these rights comprises a species of proprietary entitlement, with the usual consequence in English law that the rights in question have the capacity to bind third parties. But, for precisely this reason, the law draws fairly stringent definitional boundaries around the kinds of incorporeal right that enjoy this potential of third-party impact. The discussions cover: the defining characteristics of easements and profits; the modes of creation and termination of easements and profits; and the transmission of the benefit and burden of easements and profits.

Abstract:
Abstract A computer simulation was employed to perform parametric studies on muffler design. Engine exhaust system parameters such as muffler diameter, source-muffler pipe length, number of mufflers, series and parallel installation of mufflers, and the source and termination impedances were considered during the studies. The muffler insertion loss and radiated sound pressure level were predicted for several values of each parameter. An acoustic model consisting of a lumped source-muffler-termination system was used. A scheme was developed using the pressure source model to predict the radiated sound pressure and a simplified expression for the predicted quantity was obtained as a sum of the measured, plane wave and monopole terms. The relationship between the insertion loss and radiated sound pressure level was established for a given set of conditions. A vacuum pump was used as the sound source. An expansion chamber was used as a muffler.

Abstract:
This paper seeks to determine the validity of two distinct tube-load models relating central aortic blood pressure to peripheral blood pressure in humans. Specifically a single-tube model (1-TL) and a serially connected two-tube (2-TL) model, both terminating in a Windkessel load, are considered as representations of the central aortic-peripheral arterial path. The validity and fidelity of the two models was assessed and compared quantitatively by fitting central aortic, radial and femoral blood pressures collected from 8 patients. Both models fitted the BP waveform pairs effectively, and were capable of estimating pulse travel time (PTT) accurately; also the model derived frequency responses were close to the empiric transfer function estimates derived from central and peripheral BP measurements. The 2-TL model was consistently better than 1-TL with statistical significance in terms of accuracy of the central aortic BP waveform, the average waveform RMSE were 2.52 mmHg versus 3.24 mmHg respectively (p<0.05).

Abstract:
The thermoacoustic behavior of a combustion system can be determined numerically via acoustic tools such as Helmholtz solvers or network models coupled with a model for the flame dynamic response. Within such a framework, the flame response to flow perturbations can be described by a Finite Impulse Response (FIR) model, which can be derived from LES time series via system identification. However, the estimated FIR model will inevitably contain uncertainties due to e.g., the statistical nature of the identification process, low signal-to-noise ratio or finite length of time series. Thus, a necessary step towards reliable thermoacoustic stability analysis is to quantify the impact of uncertainties in FIR model on the growth rate of thermoacoustic modes. There are two practical considerations involved in this topic. First, how to efficiently propagate uncertainties from the FIR model to the modal growth rate of the system, considering it is a high dimensional uncertainty quantification (UQ) problem? Second, since longer CFD simulation time generally leads to less uncertain FIR model identification, how to determine the length of the CFD simulation required to obtain satisfactory confidence? To address the two issues, a dimensional reduction UQ methodology called “Active Subspace approach” is employed in the present study. For the first question, Active Subspace approach is applied to exploit a low-dimensional approximation of the original system, which allows accelerated UQ analysis. Good agreement with Monte Carlo analysis demonstrates the accuracy of the method. For the second question, a procedure based on Active Subspace approach is proposed, which can serve as an indicator for terminating CFD simulation. The effectiveness of the procedure is verified in the paper.

Abstract:
Abstract In the United States, a train moving onto a terminating track at a passenger terminal relies on the train engineer’s operation. Currently, there are no mechanisms installed at the U.S. passenger terminals that are able to automatically stop a train before reaching the end of the track if an engineer fails to do so. The engineer’s actions determine whether the train will safely stop before the end of the terminating track. Thus, incapacitated or inattentive engineer operation would result in end-of-track collisions, such as the New Jersey Transit train accident at Hoboken Terminal in 2016. Currently, PTC enforcement is not required in passenger terminals. In an ongoing project tasked by the Federal Railroad Administration, we study the cost-effectiveness and operational impact of possible PTC enforcement to prevent end-of-track collisions. Specifically, a Concept of Operations (ConOps) was developed to outline the proposed plans to implement two of the most widely used PTC types, namely the Advanced Civil Speed Enforcement System (ACSES) and Interoperable Electronic Train Management System (I-ETMS). This paper describes in-field testing of the ConOps in ACSES-type terminal. In the planned field test, a train equipped with one locomotive and at least one passenger coach would be tested on platform tracks in a selected passenger terminal. These are three major testing components, which are test equipment, test track, and recorded information for each test sequence. Firstly, in terms of equipment, a traffic cone will be placed on the track to simulate a bumping post. In ACSES system, two sets of transponders are programmed to require a positive stop within a specified distance and mounted to the cross ties at specified positions. Secondly, a yard track will be used to test the feasibility of this exercise at the beginning. Upon successfully completing the test multiple times, a series of tests will also be made on the studied platform track. Thirdly, each test run should record the distance from the head end of the test train and the traffic cone for each test run. In addition, ACSES system should also record the information on the ACSES display as it passes the first and second transponder set, respectively. Overall, the field tests presented in this paper, along with previous work in benefit-cost analysis and operational impact assessment, can contribute to an assessment of the proposed PTC implementation at stub-end terminals in the United States in order to effectively and efficiently prevent end-of-track collisions.
