Abstract:
The Columbia Biological Series (1894–1974) was produced by the Department of Biology (later Zoology) of Columbia University, New York, and spanned a wide range of topics within the biological sciences. This paper provides a bibliography for the twenty-five volumes of this series together with basic details on the launch (1894), re-launch (1937), and history of the series. The series receives attention from historians of biology principally as the source for canonical texts in the synthesis period of evolutionary studies, with publications by Dobzhansky, Mayr, Simpson, and Stebbins. This note provides additional details on the publication history of these volumes. Synthesis historians, myself included, have poorly appreciated how the production of this series fit into efforts to promote Columbia University as a major centre for innovative biological research. We also have poorly understood the relations between these books and the Jesup lecture series, an irregular event sponsored by the department at Columbia. Tracing the series' publication history speaks to both these topics.

Abstract:
The previous progress and future trend of ecotourism research are undergoing a significant paradigm shift in tourism research following the recent Covid-19 pandemic. The present study introduces a bibliometric review investigating of ten years publication between 2010 and 2020 in journal and proceeding documents. By adopting a bibliometric approach, this article addressed five key information’s of journal and proceeding paper publications: (a) years and volume of publications (b) affiliation contribution (c) source and document type (d) the topic covers and (e) publication and intellectual knowledge. 37 relevant publications in the journal and proceeding paper were included in the study after excluding books, books series, chapter in book, thesis, citation document and several parameters. The trend of research on ecotourism has found a downward trend of productions produced per year, except in 2012. Moreover, marketing is the highest main topic of study. Such bibliometric analysis findings can be useful to find an opportunity for future study within the ecotourism setting, especially in protected areas such as national parks.

Abstract:
Abstract Purpose One of the main indicators of scientific production is the number of papers published in scholarly journals. Turkey ranks 18th place in the world based on the number of scholarly publications. The objective of this paper is to find out if the monetary support program initiated in 1993 by the Turkish Scientific and Technological Research Council (TÜBİTAK) to incentivize researchers and increase the number, impact, and quality of international publications has been effective in doing so. Design/methodology/approach We analyzed some 390,000 publications with Turkish affiliations listed in the Web of Science (WoS) database between 1976 and 2015 along with about 157,000 supported ones between 1997 and 2015. We used the interrupted time series (ITS) analysis technique (also known as “quasi-experimental time series analysis” or “intervention analysis”) to test if TÜBİTAK’s support program helped increase the number of publications. We defined ARIMA (1,1,0) model for ITS data and observed the impact of TÜBİTAK’s support program in 1994, 1997, and 2003 (after one, four and 10 years of its start, respectively). The majority of publications (93%) were full papers (articles), which were used as the experimental group while other types of contributions functioned as the control group. We also carried out a multiple regression analysis. Findings TÜBİTAK’s support program has had negligible effect on the increase of the number of papers with Turkish affiliations. Yet, the number of other types of contributions continued to increase even though they were not well supported, suggesting that TÜBİTAK’s support program is probably not the main factor causing the increase in the number of papers with Turkish affiliations. Research limitations Interrupted time series analysis shows if the “intervention” has had any significant effect on the dependent variable but it does not explain what caused the increase in the number of papers if it was not the intervention. Moreover, except the “intervention”, other “event(s)” that might affect the time series data (e.g., increase in the number of research personnel over the years) should not occur during the period of analysis, a prerequisite that is beyond the control of the researcher. Practical implications TÜBİTAK’s “cash-for-publication” program did not seem to have direct impact on the increase of the number of papers published by Turkish authors, suggesting that small amounts of payments are not much of an incentive for authors to publish more. It might perhaps be a better strategy to concentrate limited resources on a few high impact projects rather than to disperse them to thousands of authors as “micropayments.” Originality/value Based on 25 years’ worth of payments data, this is perhaps one of the first large-scale studies showing that “cash-for-publication” policies or “piece rates” paid to researchers tend to have little or no effect on the increase of researchers’ productivity. The main finding of this paper has some implications for countries wherein publication subsidies are used as an incentive to increase the number and quality of papers published in international journals. They should be prepared to consider reviewing their existing support programs (based usually on bibliometric measures such as journal impact factors) and revising their reward policies.

Abstract:
In this paper, a bibliometric analysis was performed in order to analyze the state of the art and publication trends on the topic of ISCC (Integrated Solar Combined Cycles) for the period covering 1990 to July 2020. The Web of Science (WOS) database was consulted, and 1277 publications from 3157 different authors and 1102 different institutions, distributed among 78 countries, were retrieved as the corpus of the study. The VOSViewer software tool was used for the post-processing of the WOS corpus, and for the network data mapping. Multiple bibliometric indicators, such as the number of citations, keyword occurrences, the authors’ affiliations, and the authors, among others, were analysed in this paper in order to find the main research trends on the ISCC topic. The analysis performed in this paper concluded that the main publication source for ISCC research was Energy Conversion and Management, in terms of the total number of publications (158), but Solar Energy had the highest number of citations on the ISCC topic (4438). It was also found that China was the most productive country in terms of ISCC publications (241), and the Chinese Academy of Sciences was the most productive institution (52). Nevertheless, the author with the most publications on ISCC was I. Dincer, from Ontario Tech University (24). Based on publication keywords, a series of recommendations for future developments in the ISCC topic were derived, as well as the ways in which those ideas are connected to the global state of solar energy research.

Abstract:
Introduction: The COVID-19 pandemic is rapidly evolving with the number of cases exponentially rising. The research scientific community has reacted promptly as evidenced by an outstanding number of COVID-19 related publications. As the number of scientific publications rapidly rises, there is a need to dissect the factors that lead to highly impactful publications. To that end, the present paper summarizes the characteristics of the top 50 cited COVID-19-related publications that emerged early during the pandemic. Methods: A systematic search of the Web of Science, Scopus, and Google Scholar was performed, using keywords related to COVID-19 and SARS-CoV-19. Two independent authors reviewed all the search results, screening for the top 50 cited COVID-19-related articles. Inclusion criteria comprised any publication on COVID-19 or the SARS-CoV-2 virus. Data extracted included the type of study, journal, number of citations, number of authors, country of publication, and study content. Results: As of May 29th, the top 50 cited articles were cited 63849 times during the last 4 months. On average, 14 authors contributed to each publication. Over half of the identified articles were published in only 3 journals. Furthermore, 42% and 26% of the identified articles were retrospective case series and correspondence/viewpoints, respectively, while only 1 article was a randomized controlled trial. In terms of content, almost half (48%) of the identified publications reported clinical/radiological findings while only 7 out of the 50 articles investigated potential treatments. Conclusion: By highlighting the characteristics of the top 50 cited COVID-19-related articles, the authors hope to disseminate information that could assist researchers to identify the important topics, study characteristics, and gaps in the literature.

Abstract:
AbstractPurposeWe propose and apply a simplified nowcasting model to understand the correlations between social attention and topic trends of scientific publications.Design/methodology/approachFirst, topics are generated from the obesity corpus by using the latent Dirichlet allocation (LDA) algorithm and time series of keyword search trends in Google Trends are obtained. We then establish the structural time series model using data from January 2004 to December 2012, and evaluate the model using data from January 2013. We employ a state-space model to separate different non-regression components in an observational time series (i.e. the tendency and the seasonality) and apply the “spike and slab prior” and stepwise regression to analyze the correlations between the regression component and the social media attention. The two parts are combined using Markov-chain Monte Carlo sampling techniques to obtain our results.FindingsThe results of our study show that (1) the number of publications on child obesity increases at a lower rate than that of diabetes publications; (2) the number of publication on a given topic may exhibit a relationship with the season or time of year; and (3) there exists a correlation between the number of publications on a given topic and its social media attention, i.e. the search frequency related to that topic as identified by Google Trends. We found that our model is also able to predict the number of publications related to a given topic.Research limitationsFirst, we study a correlation rather than causality between topics’ trends and social media. As a result, the relationships might not be robust, so we cannot predict the future in the long run. Second, we cannot identify the reasons or conditions that are driving obesity topics to present such tendencies and seasonal patterns, so we might need to do “field” study in the future. Third, we need to improve the efficiency of our model by finding more efficient variable selection models, because the stepwise regression method is time consuming, especially for a large number of variables.Practical implicationsThis paper analyzes publication topic trends from three perspectives: tendency, seasonality, and correlation with social media attention, providing a new perspective for identifying and understanding topical themes in academic publications.Originality/valueTo the best of our knowledge, we are the first to apply the state-space model to examine the relationships between healthcare-related publications and social media to investigate the relationships between a topic’s evolvement and people’s search behavior in social media. This paper thus provides a new viewpoint in the correlation analysis area, and demonstrates the value of considering social media attention in the analysis of publication topic trends.

Abstract:
The article deals with the beginnings of the Polish railway technological literature during the interwar period. It discusses the historical and typographical issues of the series entitled Wydawnictwa Techniczne Ministerstwa Komunikacji (The Technical Publications of the Ministry of Communication), opened in 1935, by the monograph Hamulce kolejowe (Railway Brakes) by eng. Mieczysław Zabłocki. During the years 1935–1939, there appeared twenty volumes in the series. Most of them were related to the technological issues of railway construction and development, although one dealt with air transportation, and one with installing and operating cable car lines (aerial tramways). World War II brought an abrupt end to the publishing of the series, but it was revived with the second edition of Zabłocki’smonograph of railway braeks in 1946. Through 1948 twelve volumes were published; once again chiefly concerned with railway technology. The only exception was the collective publication edited by eng. Tadeusz Tillinger entitled Drogi wodne (The Waterways). Both during the interwar period and after the Second World War, the volumes comprising the series Technical Publications of the Ministry of Communication were an important source of specialized information for railway employees in Poland. The work on the series within the Ministry of Communication also stimulated publishing activities of the appropriate ministerial departments.

Abstract:
Background The COVID-19 pandemic has yielded an unprecedented quantity of new publications, contributing to an overwhelming quantity of information and leading to the rapid dissemination of less stringently validated information. Yet, a formal analysis of how the medical literature has changed during the pandemic is lacking. In this analysis, we aimed to quantify how scientific publications changed at the outset of the COVID-19 pandemic. Methods We performed a cross-sectional bibliometric study of published studies in four high-impact medical journals to identify differences in the characteristics of COVID-19 related publications compared to non-pandemic studies. Original investigations related to SARS-CoV-2 and COVID-19 published in March and April 2020 were identified and compared to non-COVID-19 research publications over the same two-month period in 2019 and 2020. Extracted data included publication characteristics, study characteristics, author characteristics, and impact metrics. Our primary measure was principal component analysis (PCA) of publication characteristics and impact metrics across groups. Results We identified 402 publications that met inclusion criteria: 76 were related to COVID-19; 154 and 172 were non-COVID publications over the same period in 2020 and 2019, respectively. PCA utilizing the collected bibliometric data revealed segregation of the COVID-19 literature subset from both groups of non-COVID literature (2019 and 2020). COVID-19 publications were more likely to describe prospective observational (31.6%) or case series (41.8%) studies without industry funding as compared with non-COVID articles, which were represented primarily by randomized controlled trials (32.5% and 36.6% in the non-COVID literature from 2020 and 2019, respectively). Conclusions In this cross-sectional study of publications in four general medical journals, COVID-related articles were significantly different from non-COVID articles based on article characteristics and impact metrics. COVID-related studies were generally shorter articles reporting observational studies with less literature cited and fewer study sites, suggestive of more limited scientific support. They nevertheless had much higher dissemination.

Beginning in 2008, with the French publication of volume 1 of The Beast and the Sovereign, Éditions Galilée, the University of Chicago Press, and an international editorial team initiated the process of editing, publishing, and translating, in reverse chronological order, the complete seminars of Jacques Derrida. These seminars, given variously at the Sorbonne, the École normale supérieure, the École des hautes études en sciences sociales, Johns Hopkins University, Yale University, the University of California, Irvine, the New School for Social Research, the Cardozo Law School, and New York University, encompass material presented as early as 1959 and as late as 2003.With Derrida’s death in 2004, the seminar publications —projected to continue well into the 2050s — became the principal source of all Derrida’s future, posthumous publications, now under the direction of Katie Chenoweth, director of the Bibliothèque Derrida series at the French publishing house Éditions du Seuil. This special issue of Poetics Today addresses two questions that are raised by this enterprise: First, how does the publication, mediatization, and mass dissemination of Derrida’s teaching transform his corpus? Second, how does this corpus already speak to, anticipate, and preprogram the virtualization, translation, and transmission of the space of “the seminar”?

As editor of scopio Editions it is a great honour to be writing this closing text about the upcoming book which communicates our last Duelo/Dueto session of Architecture, Art and Image (AAI) series that had as invited authors Valerio Olgiati and Bas Princen. I will start by talking about the book as a privileged medium for Architecture, Art and Image and then go on focusing on this book in particular and its authors. This conference series had from the start planned a publication for each session with the contribution of the invited speakers and the organization because we believe that the physical book, without prejudice towards the potential of digital publications, is still a tool of paramount importance for preserving and building knowledge, not just for students and academics, but also for all professionals and non-scholars. The physical book somehow allows the understanding of what was discussed and debated in Duelo/Dueto sessions in a different manner, encouraging and giving the right time to each viewer for a deeper thinking. The reading of these sessions also means that these events of rich exchange of ideas and personal experience between significant authors coming from AAI universe are preserved for future studies. In this way, they can be shared with a larger audience, opening the mind of many to these events and encouraging critical thinking toward a vast horizon of issues related to AAI universe. It is worth referring also that the specific potential of the physical book as a unique medium to communicate Architecture, Art and Image1 was explored in this publication, which adds to its uniqueness and makes it more an author´s book than the customary conference or roundtable publication. It was possible to create a visual narrative where the sum is greater than the parts, which we believe has as a result an innovative reading and a more insightful understanding about the thoughts, work and artistic strategies of both authors. Thus, we believe that this book, the second of this series of four publications focused on each session, will foster a significant critical debate related to Architecture, Art and Image, as already happened with our first published book on this series. Abstract:
It is evident from reviewing scientific literature that the quality of argumentation in some areas of medical research has deteriorated during the last decades. Publication of a series of questionable reliability has continued without making references to the published criticism; examples are discussed in this review. Another tendency is that drugs without proven efficiency are advertised, corresponding products patented and marketed as evidence-based medications. Professional publications are required to register drugs and dietary supplements to obtain permissions for the practical use; and such papers appeared, sometimes being of questionable reliability. Several examples are discussed in this review when substances without proven effects were patented and introduced into practice being supported by publications of questionable reliability. Some of the topics are not entirely clear; and the arguments provided here can induce a constructive discussion.

JCAMP-DX has, for several years, been the standard form for the exchange of infrared spectral data. More recently JCAMP-DX protocols have been published for chemical structure data and for nuclear magnetic resonance spectroscopy. This publication presents a new JCAMP-DX data exchange protocol for mass spectrometry, covering the transport of single spectra, spectral series, and raw data files. The protocol can be implemented on any computer system and storage media. It is completely manufacturer independent. As with previous publications in this series, the aim is to provide reliable data transfer without loss of information regardless of the hardware or software involved. A comparison to the work on a binary protocol currently being carried out by the Analytical Instrument Association is also presented.

Abstract:
Aim. To study the dynamics and patterns of medical publications in Russian, made during the year from February 2020, in order to assess the completeness of data on the etiology, pathogenesis, prevention and treatment of coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19), as well as rehabilitation and healthcare management during a pandemic.Material and methods. We searched for publications using the Pubmed database and the Elpub platform. The search was carried out using the following requests: “COVID-19” and “SARS-CoV-2”. Thematic sections were allocated according to source type, specialization and research design. The publications were classified according to keywords and meaning. The publication time was estimated by the date it was accepted for publication. Values were assessed using numerical values and graphs.Results. One hundred fifteen (28,5%) publications presented data from original research, while 288 (71,5%) — reflected the results of already existing sources. An increase in proportion of primary sources with the pandemic spread was established. There were following most common study designs: case series — 87 (77,7%); case reports — 15 (13,4%); cohort studies — 8 (7,1%); randomized clinical trials — 2 (1,8%). By topic, the largest number of articles are devoted to the diagnosis and treatment of COVID-19 — 250 (62%), epidemiology — 36 (8,9%), etiology and pathogenesis — 36 (8,9%), healthcare management — 30 (7,4%), “Other” — 20 (4,9%), and policy papers from expert communities — 13 (3,25%). The smallest number of publications is directly related to cardiology and prevention, including immunoprophylaxis — 12 (2,9%), as well as rehabilitation — 6 (1,5%).Conclusion. The dynamics and patterns of publications on COVID-19 in Russian are generally in line with global trends and reflect the pandemic characteristics in Russia. Due to disease novelty, there is currently a knowledge gap in the treatment, prevention and long-term outcomes of COVID-19. In the future, studies with a higher evidence level are needed on possible methods of treatment, prevention, including cardiology issues and vaccination, as well as rehabilitation.

Abstract:
The article titled “Consumer perspectives on reproductive health after using the Jakpros smart mobile health application: A cross-sectional, qualitative study” ([version 1; peer review: 1 not approved] F1000Research 2019, 8: 396 https://doi.org/10.12688/f1000research.17894.1) has been retracted by F1000Research on the grounds of scientific misconduct. On submission to F1000Research, all manuscripts undergo plagiarism checks as standard—this is detailed in our Originality policies. Upon submission, authors are also required to declare that the article is not under consideration or review by another publisher. At this stage in the publication process, our plagiarism detection software did not identify any significant duplication of text. Following publication of the article, the F1000Research editorial team were notified of a high degree of similarity between this manuscript and one already published in the Institute of Physics (IOP) Conference Series: Earth and Environmental Science (B Wiweko et al 2019 IOP Conf. Ser.: Earth Environ. Sci. 248 012038 https://iopscience.iop.org/article/10.1088/1755-1315/248/1/012038/pdf). On investigation, the extent of overlap between these two publications was substantial, and this was deemed a case of duplicate publication. Duplicate publication is a major ethical issue and, as a member of the Committee on Publication Ethics (COPE) and a follower of the International Committee of Medical Journal Editors (ICMJE) recommendations, F1000Research takes such matters seriously. In response to our concerns, corresponding author Budi Wiweko acknowledged that publication misconduct has taken place and has been informed that, due to the extent and nature of duplication between the articles published in F1000Research and IOP, F1000Research will retract the article and publish a linked retraction notice. In line with COPE guidelines, F1000Research has informed the Publisher of IOP Conference Series about this issue, and our final decision has been communicated to all authors and their respective institutions.

Abstract:
The discussion on the state of the art of scientific publications in Latin American countries generally restricts itself to its supposedly low visibility. This affirmation is generally conditioned to the exclusive use of large international databases, mainly of the USA and Europe, which include thousands of scientific publications that have marginalized a large part of the scientific literature produced in peripheral countries. Given this fact of low visibility, it became imperative for some Latin American countries, beginning in the 90s (20th Century), to develop their own mechanisms of projection of the results of their own scientific production. The experiences constitute an example for countries that, having significant scientific production, still do not have the means to facilitate access to local scientific publications. Although Bolivia still remains distant from these initiatives, a series of studies were identified that show the existence of a tradition of publication in scientific magazines and interest in their visibility, on a local and international level, which demands attention to the most adequate mechanisms in order to carry this out.

Abstract:
ABSTRACTThe 150th anniversary of the Royal Historical Society offers an opportunity for an investigation into its publications over the longue durée. Its slow transformation from an association of literary dilettanti to a body of professional historians in the period 1890–1910 was accompanied by changes to its publication programme: the appointment of a literary director, an improvement in the quality of papers read, the merger with the Camden Society and the commitment to a programme of historical bibliographies established the basis of the Society's publishing programme for much of the twentieth century. The interwar years saw new initiatives including the launch of Guides and Handbooks, but the Society was already losing momentum, and an ill-fated foray into the publication of diplomatic records stymied its reputation. The 1950s and 1960s were a period of ongoing stasis, from which the Society was rescued in the early 1970s by G. R. Elton and his allies, who promoted a monograph series and the Annual Bibliographies. The momentum of change was sustained by the early commitment to an electronic version of its bibliographies, and still more recently by a commitment to open access monographs. The changing profile of the Society's publications by gender of author, period and area is charted, raising questions about future directions.

Abstract:
Abstract This paper is the fourth in a series of publications presenting the process of installation, testing and long-term assessment of the navigational parameters of the Polish DGPS system. This series of publications intends to present – to the general public – the accomplishments of teams of Polish scientists who have been working for years to make the DGPS the main positioning system used in the Polish sea areas. A considerable part of the materials presented in this paper has never been published. The article presents changes in the position accuracy of the Polish DGPS system over 20 years. Both dynamic tests performed on vessels as well as static measurements campaigns were analysed. The publication contains selected results achieved in its installation and testing in 1995–1997 supplemented with the results of studies conducted in the years: 2006, 2010, 2014, 2017. During this period the position accuracy increased from 2–8 m (1996) to approx. 1–2 m (2010) due to three reasons: turning – off the Selective Availability (2000), technical modernization of reference stations (2010) and continuous – over many years – reducing GPS signal-in-space pseudorange errors, which results in increased position accuracy in all GPS augmentation systems.

Abstract:
Introduction. Various bodily tissues have been reported to enter the arterial circulation and embolize to the brain resulting in ischemic stroke. Most frequently nonthrombotic embolic stroke (NTES) of tissue origin is iatrogenic or related to an underlying disease process. With the increase in elective surgery and intravascular procedures, NTES may increase in prevalence.Aim. To compile a summary of the background, incidence, presentation, and treatment of NTES of tissue origin, by conducting a systematic review of the current literature.Summary of Review. We searched EMBASE and MEDLINE for articles on NTES of tissue origin published in English with no restriction on publication date (search date June 2017). 800 articles were identified and screened and 159 articles were ultimately reviewed in full text and included in qualitative analysis. Articles deemed relevant were assessed by a second reviewer to confirm compatibility with the inclusion criteria. References of included articles were reviewed for relevant publications. We categorized the pathology of the emboli into the following groups: amniotic fluid (4 publications), tumour (60 publications), fat (43 publications), cholesterol (19 publications), and intravascular debris (12 publications). We then summarized the available literature on each cause of NTES.Conclusions. NTES of tissue origin is an uncommon but important diagnosis to consider particularly in younger stroke patients and in certain clinical settings. Treatment for NTES is currently anecdotal and based on small case series. Embolectomy may emerge as the therapy of choice due to the longer treatment timeframe and heterogeneity of the emboli.

Abstract:
General academic series “Scientific-biographical literature” exists under the Presidium of the Russian Academy of Sciences on the basis of the S.I. Vavilov Institute for the History of Science and Technology of RAS. Founded in 1959, it celebrated 60th anniversary in 2019. During this time, the series published about 700 original biographies of scientists, engineers and inventors, both Russian and foreign. In the period of 2015-2019, the series published four monographs representing the biographies of botanist A.N. Petunnikov (1842—1919) by G.I. Lubina, biologist N.N. Novikov (1876—1964) by T.I. Ulyankina, biochemist V.S. Gulevich (1867—1933) by T.V. Bogatova, and physicist Pierre-Gilles de Gennes (1932—2007) by A.A. Sonin. All these publications contain a large number of unique visual materials; this has already become a tradition for books in the series “Scientific-biographical literature”. They also have standard annex for the series, including list of the main dates of life and creative activity, reference lists of scientific works of book characters, and lists of literature about them. During the reviewed period, several manuscripts were approved for publication by the editorial Board of the series and included in the publishing plan of the Publishing house “Nauka”, but due to financial difficulties, they were not published in the series format. However, the prepared manuscripts have already been published in other publishing houses or are at the stage of editorial and publishing preparation. Among them there are biographies of French physicist, Nobel Prize winner Louis de Broglie (1892—1987) by A.F. Smyk; palaeontologist V.P. Amalitskiy (1860—1917) by V.I. Onoprienko; Honorary member of the USSR Academy of Science, palaeontologist M.V. Pavlova (1854—1938) by G.I. Lyubina and Z.A. Bessudnova; astronomer N.M. Subbotina (1877—1961) by O.A. Valkova. Currently, in 2020, no new publications are planned within the framework of the general academic series “Scientific-biographical literature”.

AFinLA’s research network for Speech and Spoken Language Research was established in 2014. This is the first thematic publication from the network. This introductory article introduces and classifies the other articles in this collection. In addition, we examine earlier AFinLA publications from the preceding four decades and evaluate the extent of pronunciation or spoken language research in AFinLA’s publication series. In our analysis, we noticed that studies related to pronunciation or spoken language research formed ca. 12 % of the total volume of published articles. There has been a slight proportional decrease in number during the decades. Spoken language studies have been more common than studies focusing on pronunciation. The tar- get languages have been most commonly either Finnish or English. The main focus has often been on learning or assessing foreign language skills, but studies focusing on the teaching of pronunciation or spoken language have so far been very rare in Finland.

Abstract:
The aim of the article is to present the scale and nature of censor’s interference in Hańba domowa by Jacek Trznadel and the reconstruction of the long way the author and his publisher were forced to go trying to publish the book without censor’s crossings-out. The book was first published in 1986 by the Literary Institute in Paris (the Biblioteka Kultury series), and several months later by the underground publishing house called „NOWA”. The book had become known even before it was published because of the interview, triggering very conflicting emotions, with Zbigniew Herbert conducted by Trznadel in 1985, which was then included in the publication. In Poland, the book was legally published for the first time right after closing down the Main Office for the Control of the Publications and Public Performances in June 1990. Before the collection of the interviews was legally published, the publisher – „Test” from Lublin – was forced to sue the Regional Office for the Control of the Publications and Public Performances in Lublin and the Main Office for the Control of the Publications and Public Performances in Warsaw, referring to the Supreme Administrative Court.

Abstract:
Rationale: The place of case reports in the medical literature has been much debated in recent years. This study was undertaken to gain knowledge about the publication practice of case reports and case series from a major university hospital.Method: We decided to conduct a retrospective, bibliographic, descriptive study of published case reports and case series from a university hospital in a period of 10 years. The following variables were studied: number of reports, authorship characteristics, collaboration practices, titles, medical specialities represented, educational versus non-educational purpose and number of citations. The data were extracted from the national research information system database in Norway. Results: 2.2%of all the publications were case reports. Multiple authorship was common. Male authors outnumbered female authors. Collaboration across hospitals and nations occurred for one third of the articles. 43%of the titles did not contain information that identified them as case reports or case series. The most frequently represented specialties were neurology, rheumatology, plastic surgery and medical genetics. Nine out of 10 articles were non- educational. A third of the articles had not been cited. Conclusions: The case report seems to be a minor, although viable, genre. The proportion of case reports and case series was low. A plausible hypothesis could be that clinician-researchers at the study hospital prioritized controlled clinical and paraclinical/laboratory studies that rank higher on the evidence hierarchy. Since case reports document the presentations of individual patients and their treatment, a declining interest in their publication has a significant implication for person-centered healthcare education and training.
