Full textThe subject of this research is about teaching and learning sequences and series in primary education. The research question is to understand how favorable is the use of the theory of semiotic representation registers to create activities that help students to learn. Were created ten activities about sequences and series and four of these were chosen to be used in a classroom with 1st year students of a secondary school. By observing these activities being used in classroom, evidences were searched to evaluate if including different semiotic representation registers facilitates student\'s learning on mathematics. As a secondary aim, the student\'s infinity conception is investigated in the classroom. We also researched mathematics\' history to find different conceptions adopted by philosophers and mathematicians on infinity. As sequences and series are also studied in college, some transition difficulties (from High School to College) were discussed considering cultural differences between the two educational levels. It was concluded that concrete teaching materials to the students\' comprehension and the students\' concept of infinity is mainly linked to potential infinity.

Full textThe Polynomial Chaos theory, being a less expensive and more efficient alternative of the Monte Carlo Simulation, remains limited to the polynomials of Gaussian variables. We present a Hilbertian method that generalizes this theory and we establish the conditions of existence and convergence of an expansion in Generalized Fourier Series. Then, we present the Statistics of Things that allows studying the statistical characteristics of a set of random infinite-dimensional objects. By computing the distances between the hypervolumes, namely the distance of Hausdorff, this method allows determining the median object, the quantile objects and a confidence interval at a given level for a finite set of random objects. In the third section, we address a method for simulating a large size sample of a random object at a much reduced computational cost, and calculating its mean without using the distance between the hypervolumes

Full textThis thesis is a contribution to the study of the dependence between heavy tails random variables, and especially symmetric a-stable random variables, by introducing a new coefficient of dependence: the signed symmetric covariation coefficient. We use this coefficient and the generalized association parameter introduced by Paulauskas (1976), in the context of time series, for Identification of MA and AR stable processes. In the first chapter, we give an overview of a-stable laws. We recall the basic concepts, some representations of associated random variables in both the univariate and multivariate cases. The spectral measure carries all the information about the dependence structure of an a-stable random vector. Its form is given for two sub-families of laws : the sub-Gaussian random vectors and linear combinations of independent random variables. Covariation and codifference are presented. We introduce the signed symmetric covariation coefficient in the second chapter. This coefficient has most of the properties of the correlation coefficient of Pearson. In the case of sub-Gaussian random vectors, it coincides with the generalized association parameter. The consistency of the proposed estimators for these quantities is demonstrated. The results of a study on the asymptotic behavior of estimators are presented. In the third chapter, we introduce the concepts of signed symmetric autocovariation and generalized auto-association for linear stationary processes. We use these coefficients for identifying the order of a MA stable process. We propose a statistic acting as a partial autocorrelation coefficient. We compare this statistic with quadratic statistics asymptotically invariant based on the ranks and used by Garel and Hallin (1999) for the identification of AR stables. A study of the results is performed using simulations

Full textAggregated data appears in many areas such as economics, applied statistics, sociology, geography, energy, etc. This motivates an importance of studying the aggregation and is aggregation problem. We explore the aggregation scheme of AR(1) processes and nearest-neighbour random fields with infinite variance. We provide results on the existence of limit aggregated processes, and find conditions under which it has long memory properties in certain sense. For the random fields on Z2, we introduce the notion of anisotropic/isotropic long memory based on the behaviour of partial sums. In L2 case, the known aggregation of independent AR(1) processes leads to Gaussian limit. While we describe a new model of aggregation based on independent triangular arrays. This scheme gives limit aggregated processes with finite variance which is not necessary Gaussian. We study a discrete time risk insurance model with stationary claims modeled by the aggregated heavy-tailed process. We establish the asymptotic properties of the ruin probability and dependence structure of claims

This work analyses the medial transposition of the maxiseries Crisis on Infinite Earths (WOLFMAN; PEREZ, 1985-6), from the comics to a novel which carries the same title (WOLFMAN, 2005). In this analysis, we intend to understand how works in this transposition the relation between the different media of the story, as well as are discussed the changes in the points of view, from the target text to the source text. We base our discussions on some works concerning adaptation, from authors as Hutcheon (2013), Sanders (2006) and Rajweski (2005), in order to understand what concerns the market and reception of adapted works, and there is also some emphasis on the specificities of each media, and their potentialities, founded on Chatman (1980), Groensteen (2007; 2013), Cagnin (2014) and Saraceni (2003). At least, we discuss the changes in the points of view in the adaptation (comics novel), through the contributions of Booth (1983), Chatman (1980), Leite (1989) and Genette (1995). We will verify, through the analysis and interpretation, how the plot is altered by the changes in the point of view, how the characters are reconsidered inside the work and how the interest pivots are altered aound the subplots and characters. At the end of the work, we conclude that some devices used, as the space of the mind, though being native of the novel, can be used also in comics, as well as there is some emphasis on the changing of the points of view from the comics, in zero focalization, to the novel, in internal focalization, what allows the creation of a narrative that reinforces the subjectivities of the characters involved, also giving them greater depth and visibility in the narrative.

Full textThis thesis comprises one part concerning the union-closed sets conjecture and four other chapters dedicated to subjects related to automatic sequences. In the first part, we give a sufficient condition for a weaker version of the conjecture ($\varepsilon$-union closed sets conjecture) to hold. We also give an upper bound of the minimal maximal frequency for a family of size $n$. In Chapter 3 we prove that the coefficient extraction formula for algebraic series known for fields of characteristic $0$ is a consequence of a theorem of Furstenberg that says certains algebraic series can be written as the diagonals of a rational fractions in two variables. As the theorem is true for all fields, so is the formula. In Chapter 4 we give a generalization of the result of J.-P. Allouche and J. Shallit concerning certain infinite products and block-counting functions. In Chapter 5 we give an explicit construction based on $p$-adic valuation of an infinite word with subword complexity $\Theta(n^t)$. In Chapter 6 we give a new proof of the transcendence of the power series $L(1,\chi_s)/\Pi$, where $L$ is an analogue in positive characteristics of Dirichlet $L$ functions defined by D. Goss and $\Pi$ the analogue of $\pi$ defined by L. Carlitz

Full textThis thesis deals with some extensions of weighted automata, and studies the series they can realisedepending on the nature of their weigths. These extensions are characterised by howthe input head of the automaton is allowed to move:rotating automata can go back at the beginning of the word, and two-way automata can change the reading direction. In the general setting, weigthed rotating automata are morepowerful than classical one-way automata, and less powerfulthan two-way ones. Moreover, we introduce Hadamard expressions, which are an extension of rational expressions and can denotethe behaviour of rotating automata. The algorithms for this conversion are studied when the weights belong toa rationally additive semiring. Then, rotating automata are shown as expressive as two-way automatain the case of rational, real or complex numbers. It is also proved that two-way and one-way automataare equivalent when weighted on a locally finite bimonoid

Full textWe study a class of games introduced by Mio to capture the probabilistic μ-calculi called branching games. They are a subclass of stochastic two-player zero-sum turn-based infinite-time games of imperfect information. Branching games extend Gale-Stewart games by allowing players to split the execution of a play into new concurrent sub-games that continue their execution independently. In consequence, the play of a branching game has a tree-like structure, as opposed to linearly structured plays of Gale-Stewart games. In this thesis, we focus our attention on regular branching games. Those are the branching games whose pay-off functions are the indicator functions of regular sets of infinite trees, i.e. the sets recognisable by finite tree automata. We study the problems of determinacy, game value computability and the related problem of computing a measure of a regular set of infinite trees. Moreover, we use real-life data to show how to incorporate game-theoretic techniques in practice. We propose a general procedure that given a time series of data extracts a reactive model that can be used to predict the evolution of the system and advise on the strategies to achieve predefined goals. We use the procedure to create a game based on Markov decision processes that is used to predict and control level of pest in a tropical fruit farm

Full textDue to the dramatic increase of longitudinal acquisitions in the past decades such as video sequences, global positioning system (GPS) tracking or medical follow-up, many applications for time-series data mining have been developed. Thus, unsupervised time-series data mining has become highly relevant with the aim to automatically detect and identify similar temporal patterns between time-series. In this work, we propose a new spatio-temporal filtering scheme based on the mean-shift procedure, a state of the art approach in the field of image processing, which clusters multivariate spatio-temporal data. We also propose a hierarchical time-series clustering algorithm based on the dynamic time warping measure that identifies similar but asynchronous temporal patterns. Our choices have been motivated by the need to analyse magnetic resonance images acquired on people affected by multiple sclerosis. The genetics and environmental factors triggering and governing the disease evolution, as well as the occurrence and evolution of individual lesions, are still mostly unknown and under intense investigation. Therefore, there is a strong need to develop new methods allowing automatic extraction and quantification of lesion characteristics. This has motivated our work on time-series clustering methods, which are not widely used in image processing yet and allow to process image sequences without prior knowledge on the final results

Full textThis thesis is concentrated on some sub jects on population genetics. In the first part we give formulae including the expectation and variance of the height and the length of the ancestral recombination graph (ARG) and the expectation and variance of the number of recombination events and we show that the expectation of the length of the ARG is a linear combination of the expectation of the length of Kingman's coalescent and the expectation of the height of the ARG. Also we show give a relation between the expectation of the ARG and the expectation of the number of recombination events. At the end of this part we show that the ARG comes down from infinity in the sense that we can dfine it with X_0 = ∞, while X_t <∞ ; for all t and we find the speed that the ARG comes down from infinity. In the second part wfind a generalization of the the Ewens sampling formula (GESF) in the presence of recombination for sample of sizes n = 2 and n = 3. In the third part of the thesis we study the ARG along the genome and we we find the distribution of the number of mutations when we have one recombination event in the genealogy of the sample
