Information literacy, a research topic of interest for Information Science that was firstly developed in academic library context, is extended to other life situations. In doing so, the information process, usually focused on problem-solving process in formal contexts (academic and professional realms), and often represented as some information abilities by the current information literacy standards, is contrasted with other other informational realities, especially those that demonstrate other information natures like the affective and/or emotional, a informational dimension that needs more attention of information practice studies. With a holistic and complementary purpose, and grounded on the sociocognitive theoretical framework of information, this participatory research explores the social world of competitive bodybuilders – understood as a positive context – which is explored by the lights of The Serious Leisure Perspective. Therefore, the amateur competitive bodybuilding is deeply analyzed, showing a fresh perspective for the traditional cognitive information literacy conception. "Problem" and "need" is replaced by "pleasure" and "profound" in the understanding of information engagements (and learning) in information seeking process. Beside the notion of traditional, methodical and abstract learning, this study highlights other (not so defined) ways of knowing and being informed, in which the information use depends on the knowledge adquired put in practice. Through this perspective, the information accuracy is not defined exclusively by the cognitive authority or credibility of information, but also by physical, emotional, affective, socio-cultural aspects of information, and ultimately, by the singularity of participants’ bodies. This study concludes that the positive information point of view, especially in leisure, should be part of the information studies research agenda, since it allows the understanding of other information realities of human life, and how information (and information literacy) contributes to the development of happier and healthier communities, and, at the same time, it helps groups (and practices) to be socially known.

Abstract:
The emergence of astrocasting on the Internet offered an opportunity to study the creation of a Social Media site, and determine the influence of the participants’ perception of this leisure activity and their motivation for it. The Night Skies Network was examined under a Social Media theoretical framework. The motivation for astrocasting was studied using the Self-Determination Theory of Motivation, and its perception as a leisure activity using the Serious Leisure Perspective. The methodology used included a focus group that provided a qualitative perspective, and an on-line questionnaire using the Serious Leisure Inventory and Measure and the Leisure Motivation Scale for quantitative data. The results showed that the Night Skies Network did meet the requirements for a Social Media site, that the participants considered astrocasting as a serious leisure activity, and that they were intrinsically motivated towards it, with a strong emphasis on the Intrinsic Motivation to Know.

Stratas, Aida. "Older Adults' Perspectives on Adopting and Maintaining Long-Term Physical Activity as a Serious Leisure Interest and Their Experiences with Aging." Thesis, Université d'Ottawa / University of Ottawa, 2021. http://hdl.handle.net/10393/41632.

Abstract:
The existing literature suggests that long-term involvement in physical activity (PA) in the later years can support the health and wellbeing of older adults. However, a more detailed understanding of what influences older adults to initiate and maintain PA over a prolonged period of time would be beneficial. The purpose of this dissertation is to examine the relationship between commitment to physical activity and aging. Specifically, the objectives of this dissertation are threefold: (1) To identify factors influencing older adults to adopt PA earlier in life, that may have shaped their behavior in the later years; (2) To examine factors associated with maintaining long-term involvement in PA as a serious leisure interest after age 50; and (3) To determine the effects of long-term involvement in PA on older adults’ perceptions of wellbeing. In-depth interviews were conducted with 30 participants (8 females and 22 males; aged 50-78 years; Mean = 60.5) who have been continuously physically active for the past 10 years, or more. Results found that the most significant predictor to later involvement in PA after age 50 was high participation early in life, particularly from childhood to late adolescence or early adulthood. Further, the analysis revealed three types of older exercisers with varying degrees of seriousness or commitment (Stebbins, 1992) about their physical activity regimen—high, moderate, and low. High exercisers were the most serious or committed type of exercisers. They perceived exercise as a meaningful central life interest and spent the majority of their leisure time involved in physically challenging sports and fitness activities, often exercising 6 days or more per week. They Pursued exercise for personal development, self-fulfillment, and for maintaining optimal physical performance. Moderate exercisers were moderately committed to PA and regarded exercise as an important aspect of their life, but not the most dominant one. They engaged in sports and fitness activities at least 3 days per week and pursued exercise primarily as a necessity for good health, enjoyment, and social benefits. Low exercisers were the least committed type of exercisers. They engaged in exercise irregularly and perceived it more as a chore or task than a meaningful and enjoyable pursuit, often skipping workouts in the face of other interests and demands. They stressed the importance of social interactions, managing weight, and improving overall physical appearance as reasons to engage in exercise. Additionally, this study showed that as the degree of seriousness or commitment about exercise increased, the perceived benefits derived from exercise increased as well. The findings highlight the importance of considering intervention programs to increase motivation and encourage older adults to exercise more frequently, particularly in those struggling to adopt exercise as a sustainable lifestyle approach.

Abstract:
The purpose of this study is to contribute to the literature on successful aging, serious leisure, and sport. A qualitative methodology was used to understand the lived experiences of three master-aged athletes involved in serious powerlifting. The goal of using such an approach was to share participants’ stories within a given context, as well as uphold the emotion, merit, and authenticity of each narrative. The results address issues around participants’ initial and continued engagement with the sport of powerlifting, the ways in which powerlifting shapes the aging process, and the meaningful role that powerlifting plays in one’s life. The discussion offers further exploration of key points, including: reconnecting to one’s youth, modified training and pain management, identity formation, resistance toward older female powerlifters, powerlifting as a context for self-improvement, career stages over the life-course, social interactions and relationships, and aging successfully. A number of future research directions are offered in the hope of continuing to understand the experiences of older adults in the context of physical activity.

This paper aims to build on the theories of leisure research as it pertains to museums, as well as to be the serious leisure perspective at customer-based brand equity with regard to museum visitors. Research was conducted in the form of questionnaires distributed amongst visitors to the National Museum of Natural Science, resulting in a total of 382 valid responses. In line with the concept of leisure traits, visitor responses were categorized as “serious,” “interest”, and “casual.” These results show that with regard to brand awareness, all three categories of visitor were drawn to the museum because of its brand; with regard to perceptions of brand quality, the “serious” and “casual” groups both placed greater emphasis on facilities, staff, and service, while “interest ” visitors were more focused on facilities and quality of experience. Generally speaking, all three groups of visitors felt the brand image reflected their real selves, while “serious” visitors showed a noticeably higher level of brand loyalty than both “interest” and “casual” groups. This study will help appropriate authorities plan innovative brand marketing methods and meet the needs of visitors better.

Volunteer, is one of the most important outlines in twenty-one century. Actually, volunteer is the newest life style of the modern choices which the organization should be pay attention to. By this kind of perspective, volunteering, is not only as an occupation or a full time job(Ex: NPO, NGO work), but the concept of serious leisure mentioned by Stebbins(2001a; 1992a, 1982). From the past reviewing of serious leisure, it reveals the career volunteer should containing six traits, which are perserverance, personal effort, unique ethos, durable outcomes and identification. In terms of leisure sociability and commitment concept, the outcomes, identification, and the progression of continuing involvement, should regard as the feedback to the career volunteer after leisure participation(Gibson, Willming, & Holdnak, 2002; Kane & Zink, 2004; Heuser, 2005; Brown, 2007). Otherwise, comparing to the claim of profit hypothesis(Stebbins, 1992b), it demonstrates a mechanism to measure the cost and reward during activity participation. The core conception emphasizes the phenomenon of why participant continuing involvement in leisure activities because of the reward greater than cost. Furthermore, followed the situation in social exchange theory, isn’t it impact the progress of perception evaluation during participation? From the point of view in orgazation, the orgazation culture, cognition, network influence and interaction would affect this kind of personal to group behaviors. Therefore, social capital which includes the notion of cognition, relationship, and network in orgazation, could be another key point to exam the mechanism. To establish the discussion of the uncertain relationship in serious leisure, there are four aims in this study. First, the study verifies the concept of serious leisure traits provided by Stebbins(2001a, 1982)in career volunteers of Taiwan Forestry Bureau. Second, according to the social world and commitment postulated, the study tries to explore the relationships between the serious leisure traits. Third, based on the viewpoint of profit hypothesis(Stebbins, 1992b), the third object clarifies the influences between cost/reward to the serious leisure traits. The last, in terms of the perception of the orgazation management, what kinds of change happened after adding social capital into this mechanism comparing with the previous results? Total 331 valid questionnaires are collected from on site survey and mail survey of the career volunteers from the supervising and subordinate agencies of Forest Bureau since February 28 to May 7 in 2010. The results from comfirmtory factor analysis show that five traits related serious leisure have been proved. They are career, durable outcomes, personal effort, unique ethos and identification. Also, the study confirms the relation context, that is personal effort and unique ethos will positive and directly influence on the career, personal/social durable outcomes and identification, especially, personal effort performs the stronger effect on the durable outcomes(total effect=0.53). In the other side, the strongest effect of complex context measured from serious leisure traits is unique ethos to identification(total effect=0.93). Based on the construct of serious leisure traits, the results find out that cost/reward from profit hypothesis will totally effect upon the two cause traits: personal effort and unique ethos have influenced on three consequence traits: career, durable outcomes, and identification. Finally, adding the existence of social capital into above mechanism, not only social capital significantly directed influences the relationship from reward to career(total effect=0.70), personal durable outcomes(total effect=0.86), social durable outcomes(total effect=0.68), and identification(total effect=0.38), but it also significantly directed enhance the cost to career(total effect=0.23), personal durable outcomes(total effect=0.14), social durable outcomes(total effect=0.38), and identification(total effect=0.59). Finally, the results of this study can provide other researchers for follow up analysis about serious leisure inventory evaluation, the construct of cost and reward scale measurement. Otherwise, on the practice recommendation, it should bring the concept of the relation between serious traits, the cost/reward evaluation, and social capital into volunteer interpretation service, the recruitment and selecting in human resource management and tourism sustainable development.

Abstract:
The Web 2.0 environment has altered North American society immeasurably as producers and consumers have merged into one, the prosumer. This new type of individual is visible in the blogosphere, in particular when examining travel blogs. The creators of travel blogs spend a considerable amount of their leisure and work creating and maintaining these travelogues, but little research has queried them about these efforts. The online contributions travel bloggers make potentially places their leisure choices within the Serious Leisure Perspective (SLP), more specifically within the sub-category of serious leisure. By engaging travel bloggers through a qualitative based questionnaire about their travel blogs, this research identified motivations and benefits of blogging. Recommendations for further research about online pursuits and serious leisure are suggested and the ways prosumers are linked to and have formed relationships with the mainstream travel industry are discussed. This research provides insight into travel bloggers’ perceptions of their contributions to the Web 2.0 environment, to the Serious Leisure Perspective, and to the travel industry.

"Serious Running: Factors that lead to awareness, attraction, attachment and loyalty to long distance running." Doctoral diss., 2014. http://hdl.handle.net/2286/R.I.24766.

Full text
Abstract:
abstract: Commitment to an activity is widely studied in leisure research. Serious Leisure Perspective (SLP) describes characteristics a committed activity participant possesses. The Psychological Continuum Model (PCM) describes the psychological process a person goes through to become committed to a leisure activity. Awareness, attraction, attachment and loyalty make of the four stages of PCM. Both perspectives have been used to describe committed leisure activity participants and commitment to organized recreational events. Research on leisure activity has yet to determine how the individual becomes loyal. Therefore, the purpose of this study is to determine the process in which recreation activity participates becomes loyal and to identify who can be labels as serious within the PCM Framework. Data was obtained from an online electronic survey distributed to participants of four U.S. marathon and half marathon events. A total of 579 responses were used in the final analysis. Path analysis determined the process in which a runner becomes committed. MANOVA is used to determine difference between leisure groups in the four stages of PCM. Results indicate that activity participants need to go through all four stages of PCM before becoming loyal. As knowledge increases, individuals are more motivated to participate. When the activity satisfies motives and becomes a reflection of their identity, feelings become stronger which results in loyalty. Socialization is instrumental to the progression through the PCM Framework. Additionally, attachment is the "bottleneck" in which all loyal activity participants my pass through. Differences exist between serious leisure groups in the attachment and loyalty stages. Those that are `less serious' are not as committed to the activity as their counterparts.

Abstract:
Retirement is a significant life transition for many older adults, and historically most retirement planning focusses on financial planning. Not only is there far less importance placed on non-financial retirement planning, but also there is also little research on what planning priorities contribute to retirement satisfaction. This dissertation presents two studies conducted with the purpose of identifying these priorities. Study one involved one-on-one semi-structured interviews of 16 retired and non-retired individuals who were engaged in an endurance serious leisure sport. It revealed similarities and differences between pre-retired and retired participants as well as overall contradictions between participants’ perceived and practised retirement strategies. While a general lack of leisure retirement planning was observed, self-determination theory’s precepts of autonomy, competence, and relatedness fulfilment were predominant in the significance the endurance sport held for participants’ retirement plans and appeared to contribute significantly to retirement well-being. The second study was a sequential transformative mixed-method design of 50 retired individuals involving an online survey and focus group discussion and was founded on Self-Determination Theory (SDT) and Serious Leisure Perspective (SLP). Qualitative data were analysed using Constant Comparison Method, Word Count, and Classical Content Analysis. Quantitative methods were applied to determine if retirement satisfaction and vitality related to SDT constructs. Using multiple linear regression analyses, autonomy (β = .43; 95% CI .04 - .22; p = .01), leisure priority (β =.28; 95% CI -.01 - .33; p =.05), and casual leisure competence (β =.68; 95% CI .02 - .59; p =.04) emerged as items most related to retirement satisfaction, while relatedness (β .32; 95% CI .14 – 1.44; p = .02) and autonomy satisfaction (β =.27; 95% CI -.01 – 1.26; p =.05) were associated with vitality.

Angling tourists who had “Participation in angling organization” demonstrated higher variations than those did not. 2. Married angling tourists’ Family Life Satisfaction was affected by “education level”, “participation in angling organization” and “annual investment of angling equipment”, each change in the factors would bring variations to the results. The angling tourists who have participation in angling organization demonstrated higher “Family Life Satisfaction” than those who did not. 3. Married angling tourists’ Family-Leisure Conflict was affected by factors of “the age of youngest child”, “education level”, “occupation”, and “residential region”, each change in the factors would bring variations to the results. Angling tourists in Matsu region tended to have higher impacts than those who came from “Taiwan”. 4. Married angling tourists’ Family Benefits Perceived was affected by factors of “gender”, “age”, “education level”, “occupation”, “participation in angling organization”, “age of angling”, “times of angling monthly”, and “duration of each angling”, each change in the factors would bring variations to the results. Male tended to have higher degree of recognition than female towards fishing activity in this case, and angling tourists who had participation in angling organization had higher degree of recognition than those who did not. 5. Serious Leisure, Family Benefits Perceived and Family Life Satisfaction tended to have positive correlations with the other, while having negative correlations with the Family-Leisure Conflict. 6. Serious Leisure, Family Benefits Perceived and tended to have positive correlations with Family Life Satisfaction; Family Benefits Perceived acted as a partial intermediary towards Serious Leisure and Family Life Satisfaction. 7. Serious Leisure and Family-Leisure Conflict had positive prediction effect towards Family Life Satisfaction; Serious Leisure positively affected Family Life Satisfaction. However, Family-Leisure Conflict negatively impacted Family Life Satisfaction. 8. Serious Leisure and Family Benefits Perceived tended to have negative prediction effect towards Family-Leisure Conflict. However, Family Benefits Perceived played a full role of intermediary effect towards Serious Leisure and Family-Leisure Conflict. The result of the study shows that the serious leisure of angling tourist may reduce the Family-Leisure Conflict and improve the Family Life Satisfaction; moreover, the Family Perceived Benefits may be improved accordingly. The study suggests that one should take care of the need of the family members while participating into the serious leisure and the Family-Leisure Conflict can be reduced effectively.

Nowadays people consider highly of having a better leisure life. Robert A. Stebbins proposed the concept of "Serious Leisure" in 1982; hobbyist activity, being the most common of which, is one of the "Ways of Life" to lead people to seek information (Savolainen, 1995). There are three purposes to this study: exploring the features of leisure information, enhancing the understanding of information behavior of the chosen hobbyist bloggers, and improving the library service for leisure information. The research questions are: (1) In which context would the home design bloggers acquire information, and what kind of skills, knowledge, and experience would they acquire? (2) How did they acquire the information? (3) In what situations would they express the information? (4) Which resources, channels, and styles would they use to express their information? (5) How does the social world of home design bloggers operate? What are the characteristics, if any, of this social world? What''s the effect this social world has on the information acquisition and expression of its members? In this study, we have found that the two main contexts of home design bloggers are in interior design projects and in daily lives. Types of the bloggers'' information objects include: preference and self needs, space design knowledge, aesthetics, sense of beauty, reference images, products information, experience, practical or technical information, and knowledge of other fields. The home design bloggers have expressed or given information in these seven contexts: to share their achievements, to share new information, to share experiences or knowledge, to answer or ask questions, to record personal files, to maintain their blogs, and to interact with people or expand connections. On the other hand, there are four factors which cause them not to express the information: protecting privacy, maintaining superiority and stop imitation, changes of the social world, and feeling saturated or tired of expressing information. In this study, the behavior was given the name "information hiding". In addition, we have found that the characteristics of information acquisition and expression of home design bloggers are: (1) the tasks or activities are complex and include many purchasing behavior; (2) the preference, needs, practical information and images are important; (3) human sources, corporations, the internet, and actual applications are main information resources and channels; (4) blogs are the main tool to record their personal files, and also the platform which they acquire and express information; (5) both information acquisition and expression are important information behavior of those hobbyists. Finally, this study suggests that home design hobbyists acquire more theoretic knowledge and that library or information providers provide more practical information or images and new platforms. Follow-up studies of information in project leisure, theory construction, and information expression vs. information hidden are also recommended.
