The finding of a suite of unusual minerals associated to ophiolitic chromitites questions traditional model for the formation of these rocks. These findings include minerals typically considered indicators of ultra-high pressure and super-reducing conditions (i.e., diamond). Several authors proposed new genetic models for ophiolitic chromitites which involved their formation and/or evolution in the deep mantle (>410 km), opening an intense debate that is still active. This thesis is concerned with the mineralogy and chemistry of metasomatic reaction zone formed around high-grade blueschist facies blocks (15 kb, 450-500°C) of meta-igneous and metasedimentary lithologies within a serpentinite melange matrix on the island of Syros, Greece. The orientation and survival of neonate snapping turtles (Chelydra serpentina) were studied in 1986 and 1987. Orientation mechanisms were tested in an outdoor parabolic arena. These experiments suggested that positive geotaxis was a dominant cue directing neonate snapping turtles to water.<br>Hatchling survival and movement from nest to water were studied in Calumet, Quebec using isotope tagging.<br>A highly significant number of hatchlings (95%) released on sloped nest sites were positively geotactic. <p> The fluid history of serpentinites from three locations in the Franciscan Complex, San Rafael Mountains, California is evaluated with petrologic and stable isotope data that allow interpretation of the serpentinization history and tectonic origin of these rocks. Petrologic evidence shows that most samples were originally serpentinized in a relatively low temperature seafloor hydrothermal environment, but some rocks underwent subsequent recrystallization.
