Full textEnvironment problems are many in Brazil however they take on a major importance in the Amazon basin, especially with the "Grande Carajas Project" (PGC) of which the "Companhia Vale do Rio Doce" company is the leader. A "US steel" subsidiary was looking for manganese, in that Amazon region when a helicopter crash landing les Bruno Augusto dos Santos to the discovery of the world's biggest open reserve of iron ore. 27000 workers were to set up the Carajas Program in 1982 and it is estimated that more than 500000 mine workers now operate in the Amazon forest. According to the Environment Institute of Brazil IBAMA "when iron ore is important, then there is a special vegetal stratum called "canga", and on top of it grows the typical metalophylic forest, of Carajas" which was to disappear with mining. No rigorous study having been done, mining has led to deforestation and pollution that the Brazilian Institute of Socio Economical Studies IBASE has confirmed. This theoretical study deals with PGC-CVRD socio environmental impact in Amazon, by exploring strategies, policies and relationships of Indians with towns and forests. The inquiry shows social and ecological imbalance as the consequences mainly fall on poorer people, mine workers and landless peasants. We listen to the main "actors" among Indians, elected representatives, trade unions and rural leaders as well as Federal administration, and Parauapebas City hall. I have studied the Privatization of PGC

Full textOn the ria coastline of the Pará state, in Brazilian Amazonia, we find a succession of mangroves, beaches and sand-dunes. The mangroves there constitute a true coastal forest, covering nearly 2000 km². This interface, marked by its blurred limits, woks simultaneously as a barrier against human systematic penetration and settlement, and as a means of subsistence for the local populations fishing and collecting crustaceans and molluscs. This area, because it is part of the coastal region, more densely populated than the reste of the state, muste endure the changes involved by modernization and growing exchanges. In our study of the coastline as a system, with its immense diversity in terms of men’s working activities or integration within the regional space, we will focus on the question of spatial organization. Our subject wil be dealt with from different angles and on diferent scales, so as to find out what elements influence it, including a complex, unique physical environment, closeness to the land or on the contrary to the sea or estuaries, the history of human settlement, and the road infrastructures. The disparities between the various areas tend to increase with modernization, population pressure, human migration and pressure on the natural ressources, which precisely arouses the question of how to manage them in terms of the latter. The organization of the local human societies, their living space and ressources may change according to the conflicts regarding how to use the land, the perturbations of the environment and the socio-economic mutations. Various strategies may be adopted so as to handle, adapt to and finally cope with the latter more or less successfullly

Full textThe object of this study is the evolution in an American community of social structures and of the relationships to the environment. It brings together various scientific studies of the same location spanning a period of half a century, from those carried out jointly by the anthropologists Galvão and Wagley in 1948 to the one undertaken by the author. The resulting monograph aims especially to identify the place given to the religious field in the cohesiveness of the traditional system of domination through patronage and in the modalities of social restructuration arising from it. The dynamic between the relationships people have amongst themselves and their relationship to the environment is examined through the recurring cycles of production as well as in relation to interventions made in the name of development, whether in a logic of productivism or in a reaction aimed at preserving the future of populations and that of the eco-system

Full textDescription and analysis of the technical and social systems of coastal fishermen from northern brazil. Amazonian small scale fisheries have expanded after the seventies, with the developpement of regional road system. However the small scale fishermen have never controled commercialization process. Nowadays most of them can not obtain the new technical means of fishing. Field data from sao caetano de odivelas, one of the most important production areas, show the several difficulties fishermen have to face in the new economic and social environment. They had to put in practices particular forms of social organization, in order to have acces to the instruments, to adapt to seasonal variations, and to improve their technics, specially through the associations between the fishermen themselves and with the middlemen

Full textThis work analyses the interaction of researchers and farmer union's leaders that live in the transamazon region, more specifically between the cities sao domingos do araguaia and ruropolis, in para state, brazil. As "action -research" groups, based in the regional poles of maraba and altamira under the influence of belem (the state capital), they belong to an history of more than 25 years of presence in the region, through farmers' unions, universities or research institutions. After presenting the regional scene and its different actors, the first part of this work analyses the social aspect of the rural life, makes considerations about the intellectual world (in particular the one of the scientists) and describes the relation between these two categories. In the second part, it describes the profile of the researchers and of the farmer unions' leaders, based on the information collected from a random sample of these two categories, which includes also assessors working on the relationship between these two categories. The exchanges between the farmers and unions' leaders and their social impacts are analysed. This work was based on the relevant scientific literature on this subject, on reports of meetings and interviews of researchers, unions' leaders and assessors of non-governmental organisations based in the regions or related to a project supervised by researchers of the federal university of para, associating several institutions of research, education and extension. The main factors explaining the common interest for a cooperative work joining researchers and farmers union leaders can be found in their biographic data. Finally, an interpretation of the various types of processes observed within that experience, whether of convergence or divergence between these actors is proposed, based on field observations and on the views and interpretations of the actors themselves. This text is therefore a critical analysis of a specific experience of "research-action", located in a new field and environment, but lacking of theoretical background, inspired by the institutions and the practical knowledge of the members of each of its categories. It is also a discussion about what could be the development of a specific region of the amazon frontier
