Abstract:
Serricornin is a female-produced sex pheromone of the cigarette beetle (Lasioderma serricorne), which is a pest of dried foodstuffs and tobacco. We report a versatile and short synthesis of all possible 6,7-syn-isomers of serricornin, including the natural isomer. Starting from the SAMP and RAMP derivatives of diethyl ketone we obtained four different enantiopure and diastereomerically pure serricornins. The main advantage of this method is that only a single kind of chiral starting material is needed for the construction of three stereogenic centers. During the synthesis further useful interm

Abstract The absolute configuration of the conformationally flexible (4R,6S,7S)-serricornin, a non natural isomer of the female-produced sex pheromone of the cigarette beetle (Lasioderma serricorne), was determined by comparison of measured and calculated circular dichroism spectra. The rotational strengths were calculated by means of the semiempirical CNDO/2S-method. The total synthesis was accomplished by the SAMP/RAMP-hydrazone method.

A. altissima bark oil had extremely strong repellent activity against L. serricorne adults with the percentage repellency 93.7, 87.8 and 76.1% after 24, 48, and 72 h exposure, respectively. A. altissima bark oil also possessed high fumigant activity against L. serricorne adults with

AbstractThe cigarette beetle Lasioderma serricorne through transportation affects the infestation of stored tobacco. Using amplified fragment length polymorphism (AFLP), DNA polymorphisms were assessed in 16 populations of L. serricorne collected from 15 countries. The dendrograms constructed from profile distance matrices revealed well-supported colony clusters. There was no clear clustering as a function of the geographic origin of the samples. The results suggest extensive insect dispersal among geographical regions due to movement of infested commodities worldwide. This first AFLP populati

The objective of this work was to evaluate the acute toxicity, sublethal effect and behavioral alteration of L. serricorne exposed to the major components of essential oils, thymol, camphor, terpineol, camphene, eucalyptol, limonene, βpinene and eugenol. The adults of L. serricorne , aged 5 days, not sexed, were submitted to acute toxicity by fumigation, used fumigation chambers, 200 ml glass containers with 20 insects, subsequently the sublethal effect, longevity and behavioral response. The results show that the major components and mixtures caused acute toxicity, reduced the survival time a

This study evaluated the ability of pteromalid parasitoids Anisopteromalus calandrae and Lariophagus distinguendus reared on Sitophilus zeamais to control stored product coleopteran pests Sitophilus oryzae, Rhyzopertha dominica and Lasioderma serricorne. In trials of parasitoid treatment with A. calandrae, fewer pests (S. oryzae and R. dominica) emerged than in the control. Parasitoid reproduction was highest with S. oryzae as a host, followed by R. dominica and L. serricorne. In trials of parasitoid treatment with L. distinguendus, fewer pests (S. oryzae, R. dominica and L. serricorne) emerge

Spices claim uniqueness as flavoring and coloring agents in culinary industry, and accompany medical properties. Previous studies have uncovered infestation of these important commodities by certain insect species but such studies on Lasioderma serricorne, the cigarette beetle, are scarce. The objective of current study was to determine the ability of L. serricorne to develop population in selected locally-available spices. Four replicates of each spice type were infested with one month-old, twenty adults of L. serricorne. The infested samples were maintained in the incubator at 30±1℃ and 65±1

The cigarette beetle, Lasioderma serricorne F. (Coleoptera: Anobiidae) is an important food storage pest affecting the tobacco industry and is increasingly impacting museums and herbaria. Monitoring methods make use of pheromone traps which can be implemented using chili fruit powder. The objective of this study was to assess the response of L. serricorne to the volatile organic compounds (VOCs) from different chili powders in order to identify the main semiochemicals involved in this attraction. Volatiles emitted by Capsicum annuum, C. frutescens, and C. chinense dried fruit powders were test
