Pseudomonas pictorum can deplete serum cholesterol. Cholesterol depleted includes free cholesterol, esterified cholesterol and cholesterol bound to different lipoproteins. Temporarily accumulated cholestenone was metabolized as reaction continued. The reaction kinetics controls the global cholesterol depletion rate during the initial part of the fermentation. Then, mass transfer takes control. In the latter, the global rate was first order with respect to the cholesterol concentration and zero order with respect to the bacterial concentration. The Tasmanian devil (TD) is threatened with extinction by a fatally infectious cancer known as Devil facial tumour disease (DFTD). The objectives of this study were toestablish species reference intervals (RIs) and examine changes that occur in DFTD. Blood samples were collected from wild TDs at multiple sites in Tasmania. Rat muscle cells were grown in culture for use as an experimental model in which to study the myolytic effects of myasthenic serum in vitro. Use was made of a procedure which depends upon the selective uptake of tritium-labelled carnitine by cultured myotubes, loss of which can be monitored following cytolytic damage. The studies demonstrated that heat-inactivated myasthenic serum samples caused myotube-specific lysis in a manner that was dependent on the addition of complement. A flow-injection system is described which employs immobilized cholesterol esterase and cholesterol oxidase for the determination of total serum cholesterol. Hydrogen peroxide generated by the enzymatic reaction is measured directly at a home-made amperometric thin-layer flow-cell held at +600 mV vs Ag/AgCl. Este estudo apresenta um painel de dados hematológicos, bioquímicos, morfológicos e citoquímicos para um grupo de serpentes dos gêneros Bothrops e Crotalus mantidas em cativeiro no Instituto Butantan. Para tanto, amostras de sangue foram colhidas da veia coccígea ventral e processadas de acordo com métodos padronizados. Resumo: Dezoito cães com diagnóstico citopatológico e/ou histopatológico de linfoma foram avaliados quanto às alterações clínicas e clinico-patológicas. Os animais foram submetidos ao protocolo quimioterápico de Madison-Wisconsin e avaliados clinicamente a cada sessão de quimioterapia quanto à sua resposta ao tratamento. Cinqüenta por cento dos cães apresentaram a forma multicêntrica da doença e 33% a forma cutânea.
