Purpose: Government expenditure affects the behavior of both producers and consumers, and influence the distribution of income and wealth in the economy. But, a cursory look at government expenditure (recurrent and capital) in Nigeria over the year, showed that expenditure has been on the increase but the rate of increase has not translated into economic comfort (reduction in poverty and unemployment rates). Julius A. Goldwater’s career as a Buddhist priest at the Los Angeles Hompa Hongwanji Temple, 1934–1945, serves as a vehicle for identifying pre-war orthodoxy and tolerance for universalism and measures the LAHH’s shift to ethnic orthodoxy after the Nikkei return from wartime incarceration. The article traces Goldwater’s path to conversion, his service as a priest at LAHH, his wartime stewardship of the temple, and the temple’s lawsuit against him in the resettlement period. The trial also brought out issues of temple leadership, race, doctrinal differences, and finances.

The French government currently honors a very unusual debt contract: an annuity that was issued in 1738 and currently yields €1.20 per year, payable to the descendants of its original recipient. I tell the story of this unique debt, which serves as an anecdotal but symbolic summary of French public finances since the eighteenth century. Created by a powerful nobleman for one of his servants, it survived the turmoil of the French Revolution, became part of the public debt and has been scrupulously honored to this day, even though its value has been eroded away by decades of inflation.

Young millennials (i.e., 18 to 24 years old) are not a primary market for the traditional banking system, especially in emerging economies. Despite the fact that almost 30% of college students have partial jobs, economic resources are limited and access to finance seems utopic. Banking services throughout the world but especially in growing economies do not fully serve students because of their lack of resources. Whether to pay for college studies or clothing, dinner or a weekend vacation, young millennials do not expect to receive banking credit from the big bank brands. In fact, this market segment is served by the retail industry with their own credit programs and financial services. In this chapter, the authors explore how young millennials have access to savings and credit, their spending behavior, their attitudes towards traditional sources of finance, and their financial inclusion and literacy. They also conducted an empirical exploratory study among college students in Mexico to hear firsthand how they managed their finances.

Always in need of credit, financiers had to project an image of wealth, and literature became a means for supporting this avenue of mobility. The Perraults entertained other notables and men of letters in their country house at Viry, and spread their reputation through poems that described the sumptuous dinners held there. This chapter argues that Charles’s entry to the world of letters was motivated by the need to augment the reputation of Pierre, whose career in finance peaked in those years. This analysis, coupled with a study of later representations of the Perraults’ social and literary life in this period, serves to present a nuanced view of the hotly-debated concept of the “salon” as applicable to seventeenth-century literary life.

This chapter focuses on the evolution of the concept of climate finance in India, reviews India’s current efforts at mobilizing finance for mitigation and adaptation from various sources, analyses the major drivers behind the flow of such funds, and discusses institutional arrangements around climate finance and their implications. The chapter also discusses the difficulties in estimating India’s climate finance flow and needs, driven in part by lack of clarity on what counts as climate finance. Although India has been able to leverage funds from a variety of sources, the quantum of funds is inadequate, given the large requirements. The key challenge will be to coordinate these multiple actors and channels of climate finance, and enable them to integrate with larger policy processes in order to secure and deliver climate finance that serves India’s interests and is truly transformational in its impact.

This chapter maps out local discourses of finance and entrepreneurship at the time of the Albanian firms' boom and then bust. The discourse in the chapter is fraught with gendered and ethnicized undertones, such as the highly masculine discourse of entrepreneurship that characterized press coverage and kreditorë's recollections of the firms at the time of their boom and the feminized discourse that centered on the owner of Sude Kadëna that delegitimized the firms as fictive fraudulent entities that was attributed to occult practices and gender stereotypes. It also mentions the discourse that served to legitimize the firms as virile entrepreneurs at the forefront of Albanian capitalism. The chapter explores the changing notions of legitimate or illegitimate finance and entrepreneurship at a time of dramatic free-market reform. It constructs a genealogy of finance in postsocialist Albania in conversation with broader genealogies of finance in the global history of capitalism.
