Full textThe financial exemption program for domestic help services in Quebec aims to encourage house holds with needs for domestic help to obtain their services from social economic enterprises domestic help while promoting their development. This program mainly targets people who are losing their independence due to their age, as well as those who have special needs due to a condition of incapacity or vulnerability. Several types of aid are then offered, such as compensatory aid granted to organizations providing services, fixed aid and variable aid granted to users. To this end, investment shave been made since 2009 in this program to improve variable aid for vulnerable clients in order to allow users to afford more services. The purpose of this study is to assess the effect of a increase in variable assistance per hour of domestic help which happened in October 2016. We use this almost natural experience and data on active users 18 months before and 18 months after the increase. We use a Tobit type 1 model in double differences to evaluate the impact of this reform on users’ consumption of domestic help services. Monthly, we find that the improvement in variable assistance in 2016 had the effect of increasing the average consumption of services by 0.19 per hours (approximately 11 minutes). This figure corresponds to a monthly increase of approximately 4% in the average consumption of hours of services. In addition, we distinguish two types of effect : a contribution at the extensive margin and at the intensive margin. The results reveal a greater response at extensive margin. These results suggest that the improvement in variable assistance had a positive and significant effect on the average consumption of hours of home help services in Quebec.

Full textThe first section describes young and adolescent girls' domestic work in Abidjan as a fundamental component of urban life and urban economy. This study clarifies the over-representation of a female age group (5-19 year-old) in the city, a long-standing demographic phenomenon. By gathering oral sources, ethnographical observations and written documentation, the second part shows how a specific market of child domestic labour has been progressively constituted in Ivory Coast. From fieldwork, three models of hiring are drawn, within which several types are characterised. The practices of putting girls to work and the relations between the women « bosses » and the « girls » are then explored, which brings to light the effects of the deepening economic recession on domestic production. The third and last part is interested in the recent media coverage of the phenomenon of little maids in Ivory Coast. It presents a critical analysis of Ivoirian and international media

Full textThis study focuses on women domestic workers in contemporary China and is mainly based on a qualitative fieldwork in the cities of Qingdao and Shanghai. The analysis focuses on political and social change, spatial mobility, family status, work, professionalization and organization of the sector. The theoretical framework is that of sociology of social relations, women domestic workers being at the intersection of different kinds of social relations. As far as personal services are concerned, the thesis focuses on three figures which are particularly suited to a deepened reflection on care work: private care to hospital patients, care to seniors in retirement homes and care to the mother and infant in their first months. The analysis of these three figures has helped open up avenues for a China / West comparison on the conception and realization of care work. The second important axis of this thesis is the division between urban and migrant domestic workers. I argued that the urban / rural divide is indeed an important social relationship for Chinese society. I also showed that urban / rural relations subsumed class relations (the delegation of domestic labor from wealthy urban families to poor women is to be understood as a manifestation of the social division of labor), and it could also be regarded as the equivalent of a relation of racialization. As "people from outside", the migrants of rural origin are actually sentenced to a second class citizenship

Full textWomen play an essential role in the domestic setting. They are the wives, mothers and servants existing in every family and in every class. As the medieval proverb : « les mains des femmes, comme les dents des chevaux, ne peuvent être en repos » which means « Women’s hands, like horses’s teeth, can never rest ». They are always busy, always acting for the wellbeing of their masters, mistresses and children : grooming, meals, nursing, travels, birth and death. Their domestic occupations are intense but considered trite and repetitive. Women continuously take care of others, and their work isn’t always just physical or mechanical. Mutual devotion is obvious in those scenes. They do not leave a lot of mark on history, but the illustrations still show their busy silhouettes, often relegated to secondary importance. It is worth high lighting their representations and studying their chores.Through more than three hundred illuminations from French and Flemish manuscripts of the XVth century, enriched by other pictorial documents, and archival, literary or archeological sources, this thesis offers a picture of women in the domestic setting, as well as everyday life of the people living in that time period

Full textThis research focuses on the study of a corpus composed of French literary works, as well as those from the Latin American region of Río de la Plata, ranging from the mid-nineteenth century to the year 2015. The study is also based on the analysis of some iconographic images, in order to analyse the image of the housemaid’s character that emerges in the convergence between literature and visual arts. From a comparative perspective, the work explores the forms which represent this figure from a stylistic, thematic and political point of view. Adjacencies between the two national corpora show not only the existence of exchanges between the Río de la Plata and France regarding the aesthetic and political debate, but also the existence of a common distribution of the sensible. The study establishes a periodization of the character representation modes, from the character’s access to the main role, through to the analysis of the literary construction of her voice, her course of life, her intimacy and the view she has of the world. This research is based on the belief that domestic service is a total social fact, whose analysis leads to “a radical ontological questioning”. This leaves a mark on the character and on the plot that develops around her. As a result, the authors capture an image of political power. Following on from a tradition of studies that are made in the long term and also taking into account a certain "trans-nationalisation" of the character, we intend to promote the study of housemaids and domestic service in the field of comparative literature

Full textAt the beginning of the Modern Times, the military household of the king of France was a mere personal guard of the sovereign and the royal family. Yet, in the second part of the XVIIe century, it became the head of the French army. The Maison du roi exerienced a real boost from the reign of Louis XIII onwards. However, it is actually with Louis XIV that this institution gathered the elite units of the army. These units were to serve as the head of his army and provide qualified officers, as well as close protection of the sovereign and his familiy. The objective of this research is to highlight the creation and organisation of the first elite units of the French army. This research also focuses on how the king’s military household illustrated the grip of the military by louis XIV, particulary through the compromise, which is established in the most prestigious body of the army between birth and merit

Full textIn a context of decline of the male breadwinner standard, based on a pluridisciplinary approach, this thesis revisits thedomestic labour framework analysis. The first chapter carries an international perspective including developing countries(DCs) in order to discern the diversity and singularity of labour institutions. Follows the case study of Uruguay pointing out arecent break in the legacy, certainly hybrid, with liberal labour institutions and the implementation of a model labelled aspost-liberal, where collective bargaining takes a major role, including at the margins of wage labour, i.e. integrating paiddomestic workers. Theoretical arguments refer, in terms of structures, to the definitional unit of the domestic mode ofproduction, underline the limits of main corpus – the instrumental rationality of the neoclassical theory and functionalism ofthe Marxist approach – and explore the renew involving the concept of care in its consideration of the interpersonaldimension and affects. This research examines the methodological challenges raised by time use surveys (TUSs) in DCs, thistool particularly adapted to measure the domestic labour time through the collection of data on daily activities. Using theUruguayan TUS (MUT-ECH 2007), we identify the determinants of domestic burden carried by wives and test for dualearner, the so-called autonomy hypothesis and its extensions. Their earnings considered in absolute terms are a key factordecreasing the domestic volume they do. The domestic service represents the only form of outsourcing exercising asubstitution effect. However, these results are modified when considering the composite nature of domestic labour and itsunequal marital distribution
