Abstract:
The growth of connected devices, mostly due to the large number of internet of things IoT deployments and the emergence of mobile cloud services, introduces new challenges for the design of service architectures in mobile cloud computing MCC. An MCC framework should provide elasticity and scalability in a distributed and dynamic way while dealing with limited environment resources and variable mobile contexts web applications, real-time, enterprise services, mobile to mobile, hostile environment, etc. that may include additional constraints impacting the design foundation of cloud services. We show in this thesis how service-oriented architecture SOA can be a key solution to provide distributed mobile cloud services and how OSGi platform can be an adaptive and efficient framework to provide such implementation. We adapt the proposed MCC framework to different architecture contexts. The first one is a traditional centric model, where mobile devices are reduced to consuming services. The second one is a distributed model where the power of mobile-to-mobile interaction offers unlimited value-services opportunities, and finally, three-tier architecture is considered with the introduction of the cloudlet notion. For each context, we explore the performance of our service-oriented framework, and contrast it with alternative existing solutions

Abstract:
Forecasting has its application in various domains as the decision-makers are provided with a more predictable and reliable estimate of events that are yet to occur. Typically, a user would invest in licensed software or subscribe to a monthly or yearly plan in order to make such forecasts. The framework presented here differs from conventional software in forecasting, as it allows any interested party to use the proposed services on a pay-per-use basis so that they can avoid investing heavily in the required infrastructure. The Framework-as-a-Service (FaaS) presented here uses Windows Communication Foundation (WCF) to implement Service-Oriented Architecture (SOA). For forecasting, collection of data, its analysis and forecasting responsibilities lies with users, who have to put together other tools or software in order to produce a forecast. FaaS offers each of these responsibilities as a service, namely, External Data Collection Framework (EDCF), Internal Data Retrieval Framework (IDRF) and Forecast Generation Framework (FGF). FaaS Controller, being a composite service based on the above three, is responsible for coordinating activities between them. These services are accessible through Economic Endpoint (EE) or Technical Endpoint (TE) that can be used by a remote client in order to obtain cost or perform a forecast, respectively. The use of Cloud Computing makes these services available over the network to be used as software to forecast energy for solar or wind resources. These services can also be used as a platform to create new services by merging existing functionality with new service features for forecasting. Eventually, this can lead to faster development of newer services where a user can choose which services to use and pay for, presenting the use of FaaS as Platform-as-a-Service (PaaS) in forecasting.

Abstract:
Within the last five years, the market of cloud computing has shown rapid growth. However, despite the increasing popularity, researchers highlight numerous concerns regarding limited interoperability of systems hosted by different cloud providers as well as restricted customization of cloud solutions. In order to counter aforemen-tioned challenges, this study investigates the idea of introducing a marketplace for cloud services that leverage the service-oriented architecture (SOA) paradigm and of-fers software solutions, computing capabilities from cloud providers, components developed by third parties, as well as access to integration and audit services. The goal of the study lies in conceptualizing the idea and the evaluation of demand it may raise from the key cloud actors. In this regard, existing frameworks of cloud compu-ting and SOA contributed to the development of an initial model that was further improved through the interviewing process. The results of this study include a capa-bility-based framework for the cloud marketplace which not only clarifies the role and activities of the different actors but also contains the necessary features of the marketplace that are needed to ensure the proper workflow. In addition to that, the actors’ incentives and concerns regarding the marketplace were analyzed by applying SWOT-analysis. While the analysis revealed both positive interest and present de-mand among the actors, the identified weaknesses and threats highlight the need for further investigations in order to put the idea into practice.

Shehu, Umar Galadima. "Novel optimization schemes for service composition in the cloud using learning automata-based matrix factorization." Thesis, University of Bedfordshire, 2015. http://hdl.handle.net/10547/610618.

Full text
Abstract:
Service Oriented Computing (SOC) provides a framework for the realization of loosely couple service oriented applications (SOA). Web services are central to the concept of SOC. They possess several benefits which are useful to SOA e.g. encapsulation, loose coupling and reusability. Using web services, an application can embed its functionalities within the business process of other applications. This is made possible through web service composition. Web services are composed to provide more complex functions for a service consumer in the form of a value added composite service. Currently, research into how web services can be composed to yield QoS (Quality of Service) optimal composite service has gathered significant attention. However, the number and services has risen thereby increasing the number of possible service combinations and also amplifying the impact of network on composite service performance. QoS-based service composition in the cloud addresses two important sub-problems; Prediction of network performance between web service nodes in the cloud, and QoS-based web service composition. We model the former problem as a prediction problem while the later problem is modelled as an NP-Hard optimization problem due to its complex, constrained and multi-objective nature. This thesis contributed to the prediction problem by presenting a novel learning automata-based non-negative matrix factorization algorithm (LANMF) for estimating end-to-end network latency of a composition in the cloud. LANMF encodes each web service node as an automaton which allows v it to estimate its network coordinate in such a way that prediction error is minimized. Experiments indicate that LANMF is more accurate than current approaches. The thesis also contributed to the QoS-based service composition problem by proposing four evolutionary algorithms; a network-aware genetic algorithm (INSGA), a K-mean based genetic algorithm (KNSGA), a multi-population particle swarm optimization algorithm (NMPSO), and a non-dominated sort fruit fly algorithm (NFOA). The algorithms adopt different evolutionary strategies coupled with LANMF method to search for low latency and QoSoptimal solutions. They also employ a unique constraint handling method used to penalize solutions that violate user specified QoS constraints. Experiments demonstrate the efficiency and scalability of the algorithms in a large scale environment. Also the algorithms outperform other evolutionary algorithms in terms of optimality and calability. In addition, the thesis contributed to QoS-based web service composition in a dynamic environment. This is motivated by the ineffectiveness of the four proposed algorithms in a dynamically hanging QoS environment such as a real world scenario. Hence, we propose a new cellular automata-based genetic algorithm (CellGA) to address the issue. Experimental results show the effectiveness of CellGA in solving QoS-based service composition in dynamic QoS environment.

Heckmann, Benjamin. "Service quality and profit control in utility computing service life cycles." Thesis, University of Plymouth, 2013. http://hdl.handle.net/10026.1/1568.

Abstract:
Utility Computing is one of the most discussed business models in the context of Cloud Computing. Service providers are more and more pushed into the role of utilities by their customer's expectations. Subsequently, the demand for predictable service availability and pay-per-use pricing models increases. Furthermore, for providers, a new opportunity to optimise resource usage offers arises, resulting from new virtualisation techniques. In this context, the control of service quality and profit depends on a deep understanding of the representation of the relationship between business and technique. This research analyses the relationship between the business model of Utility Computing and Service-oriented Computing architectures hosted in Cloud environments. The relations are clarified in detail for the entire service life cycle and throughout all architectural layers. Based on the elaborated relations, an approach to a delivery framework is evolved, in order to enable the optimisation of the relation attributes, while the service implementation passes through business planning, development, and operations. Related work from academic literature does not cover the collected requirements on service offers in this context. This finding is revealed by a critical review of approaches in the fields of Cloud Computing, Grid Computing, and Application Clusters. The related work is analysed regarding appropriate provision architectures and quality assurance approaches. The main concepts of the delivery framework are evaluated based on a simulation model. To demonstrate the ability of the framework to model complex pay-per-use service cascades in Cloud environments, several experiments have been conducted. First outcomes proof that the contributions of this research undoubtedly enable the optimisation of service quality and profit in Cloud-based Service-oriented Computing architectures.

Abstract:
This Master’s Thesis examines and documents challenges related to the flexible interchange of web services within a cross-cloud Service Oriented Computing scenario (SOC).Starting with a theoretical approach, hypotheses are defined and processed to create testing scenarios for a practical examination. Both examinations are used to identify possible challenges. Next, encountered challenges are described, discussed and classified. Lastly, solution approaches to identified challenges are presented. The solution approaches concern related topics, such as service standardization, semantic methods, heuristics, and security/trust mechanisms. Several approaches to different challenges are reviewed in this particular context, to present an overview for future research on the subject. It is remarkable that there will be more service standardization in the future, but to achieve full automation it will be, on the long run, necessary to evolve and adopt more sophisticated solution approaches such as semantic methods or heuristics. This work is embedded into the framework of a research co-operation between the Linnaeus University Växjö and the University of Applied Sciences Karlsruhe. Results however are also applicable to other research scenarios.

Abstract:
Abstract This thesis introduces a novel Web service-centric solution to pervasive computing, called Service-oriented Pervasive Computing (also called Pervasive Service Computing), which enables computer systems to deal with context in the user’s environment, to dynamically discover and compose existing services, and to develop Internet-scale multimedia applications that support users’ activities. First, this thesis introduces the concept of Pervasive Service Computing and its relation to community coordinated multimedia, context awareness, and service-oriented computing. It then investigates the state of the art, the practices, and techniques which have been developed to support such services. Building on these tools, this study adopts a service-oriented methodology to design a reference model for Pervasive Service Computing, for accommodating specified technical requirements. This model can serve as a guide for research and development towards Pervasive Service Computing. Second, the thesis examines the nature of community coordinated multimedia, and develops the concept of Community Coordinated Multimedia (CCM). To discover the potentials of discoverability and composability of multimedia applications, the thesis introduces a model for Service-oriented Community Coordinated Multimedia (SCCM), and demonstrates the idea of “multimedia application as a service.” Furthermore, the thesis presents a content annotation service and evaluates its feasibility as an end-user prototype. Third, the thesis investigates the nature of context awareness in Pervasive Service Computing, to broaden the definition of context and context-awareness. This research introduces context-aware pervasive service composition (CAPSC) applications, and specifies three-levels of context awareness. Building on this framework, the context-aware service composition prototype is implemented. Fourth, the author examines the overall potential of service composition in Pervasive Service Computing, distinguishes its two main functions as service collaboration, and service coordination, and then develops an ODPSC (Ontology-Driven Pervasive Service Composition) ontology. To address the availability and scalability of service composition, the thesis introduces options for dynamic service composition in the Cloud, and develops an accelerated Cloud architecture for service composition in the Cloud (namely CM4SC middleware). Last, the CM4SC middleware as a service prototype is implemented
Tämän viitekehyksen avulla toteutetaan tilannetietoinen palvelujen kokoamisen prototyyppi. Neljänneksi työssä arvioidaan jokapaikan tietotekniikan palvelujen kokoamisen mahdollisuuksia, tunnistetaan sen kaksi keskeistä toiminnallisuutta, palvelujen yhteistoiminnallisuus (service collaboration) ja palvelujen koordinointi (service coordination), sekä kehitetään ODPSC (Ontology-Driven Pervasive Service Composition) -ontologia. Työssä esitetään saavutettavuuden ja laajennettavuuden haasteisiin ratkaisuksi dynaaminen palvelujen kokoaminen pilvipalveluna. Työssä kehitetään kiihdytetty pilviarkkitehtuuri (CM4SC-välikerrosohjelmisto) palvelujen kokoamiseen pilvessä. Lopuksi työssä toteutetaan CM4SC-välikerrosohjelmiston palveluprototyyppi

Abstract:
Due to the renewed globalised economical environment and the market evolution (mass customization, sustainability requirements…) the call for developing product-service strategy becomes a major stake, leading industrial companies to set collaborative business organizations and develop business services. This trend has been favored by the large-scale IT environment provided by the web 2.0 and by the development of interoperable and rather agile IT technologies based on services leading to SOA-based information systems reorganization. At the same time, lean and six sigma theories have also been used in industries to improve the industrial process itself so that profitability, quality and reputation are increased. As a new economical and technical model, Cloud Computing has generated a tremendous amount of interest and excitement in recent years as it gives a new and useful way to address IT challenges To achieve the primary goals of these technologies, concepts and models, an efficient industrial organization governance method is necessary. We propose a flexible, efficient, low cost monitoring strategy, it can couple the different layers of economic ecosystem (including business strategies, business/industrial/IT services, execution platforms and infrastructure means) it can overcome existing industrial governance architectures’ limits (most of them are rather “fixed” and lack agility, overall perspective governance as they have unilateral perspective), and it could drive the industry towards better practices, improve ability of enterprises to cope with changes from both a technical and an organizational point of view, as well as reinforce external and internal collaborative work of enterprises

Amir, Mohammad. "Semantically-enriched and semi-Autonomous collaboration framework for the Web of Things. Design, implementation and evaluation of a multi-party collaboration framework with semantic annotation and representation of sensors in the Web of Things and a case study on disaster management." Thesis, University of Bradford, 2015. http://hdl.handle.net/10454/14363.

Full text
Abstract:
This thesis proposes a collaboration framework for the Web of Things based on the concepts of Service-oriented Architecture and integrated with semantic web technologies to offer new possibilities in terms of efficient asset management during operations requiring multi-actor collaboration. The motivation for the project comes from the rise in disasters where effective cross-organisation collaboration can increase the efficiency of critical information dissemination. Organisational boundaries of participants as well as their IT capability and trust issues hinders the deployment of a multi-party collaboration framework, thereby preventing timely dissemination of critical data. In order to tackle some of these issues, this thesis proposes a new collaboration framework consisting of a resource-based data model, resource-oriented access control mechanism and semantic technologies utilising the Semantic Sensor Network Ontology that can be used simultaneously by multiple actors without impacting each other’s networks and thus increase the efficiency of disaster management and relief operations. The generic design of the framework enables future extensions, thus enabling its exploitation across many application domains. The performance of the framework is evaluated in two areas: the capability of the access control mechanism to scale with increasing number of devices, and the capability of the semantic annotation process to increase in efficiency as more information is provided. The results demonstrate that the proposed framework is fit for purpose.

Abstract:
Over the years, information technology has created opportunities to improve and extend businesses and to start conducting business in new ways. With the evolution of IT, all businesses and industries are becoming increasingly digitized. This process, or coevolution, of IT and business coming together is called digital transformation. One of the recent trends in this digital transformation is the use of application programmable interfaces (APIs). APIs are standardized digital communication interfaces, used for communication and exchange of information between systems, services and devices (such as computers, smartphones and connected machines). API communication is one of the foundational building blocks in recent disruptive technology trends such as mobile and cloud computing. The purpose of this study is to gain an understanding of the business impact that is created in digital transformation related to the use of APIs. To investigate this novel area, an exploratory study is performed where a frame of reference with an exploratory framework is created based on established academic literature. The exploratory framework consists of three main parts which cover the research questions, including Business Drivers, Business Model Change & Innovation and Challenges & Limitations related to API-enabled digital transformation. The framework is used to gather empirical data consisting of two types, interviews (primary data) and contemporary reports (secondary data). Interviews are performed with API-utilizing companies, consulting firms and IT solution providers and contemporary reports are published by consulting and technology research and advisory firms. Two main business drivers are identified in the study. The first is Understanding & Satisfying Customer Needs which is derived from companies experiencing stronger and changing demands for automated, personalized value-adding services. This requires higher degree of integration across channels and organizations. The second driver is Business Agility, which derives from higher requirements on adapting to changing environments while maintaining operational efficiency. Cost Reduction is also mentioned as a third and secondary driver, as a positive side-effect in combination with the other drivers. The identified impact on business models is that business model innovation is mostly happening in the front-end of business model towards customers. Several examples also exist of purely API-enabled businesses that sell services or manage information exchanges over APIs. The challenges and limitations identified are mostly classic challenges of using IT in businesses and not specific to use of APIs, where the general consensus is that IT and business need to become more integrated, and that strategy and governance for API-initiatives need to be established.

Lyu, Minhu. "Towards Control as a Service models and architecture for the Industry 4.0." Thesis, Lyon, 2020. http://www.theses.fr/2020LYSEI048.

Abstract:
To fit the renewed globalized economic environment, enterprises, and mostly SMEs, have to develop new networked and collaborative strategies, focusing on networked value creation (instead of the classical value chain vision), fitting the blue ocean context for innovative products and service development. Even if collaborative organizations have been studied for decades, the closer connection of information systems involved by the so-called “Industry 4.0” developed by leading industries in Europe, US and Asia requires to set new IT models to support agile and evolving collaborative Business Process (BP) enactment, integrating both traditional Information Systems (IS) and production control processes. By now, these product/service ecosystems are mostly supported by software services, which span multiple organizations and providers, and on multiple cloud-based execution environments, increasing the call for openness, agility, interoperability and trust for both production and Information System organization. These requirements are well supported by SOA, Web 2.0 and XaaS technologies for Information Systems. Taking advantage of IoT, services and Cloud technologies, the development of Cloud of Things (CoT) changes the way control application are engineered and developed moving from a dedicated design and development of control applications to a Control as a Service vision. This vision requires developing a new architecture to connect physical and logical objects as well as integrating basic control patterns to organize a consistent control service orchestration. To fit this challenge, we propose a multi-layer Control as a Service architecture to describe control systems in a holistic way. Our Control service model is built according to an event-driven orchestration strategy. Thanks to the integration of a context manager, analyzing continuously the system environment as well as the control system behavior, these context-aware control services can be deployed

With the advance of the Cloud Computing paradigm, a single service offered by a cloud platform may not be enough to meet all the application requirements. To fulfill such requirements, it may be necessary, instead of a single service, a composition of services that aggregates services provided by different cloud platforms. In order to generate aggregated value for the user, this composition of services provided by several Cloud Computing platforms requires a solution in terms of platforms integration, which encompasses the manipulation of a wide number of noninteroperable APIs and protocols from different platform vendors. In this scenario, this work presents Cloud Integrator, a middleware platform for composing services provided by different Cloud Computing platforms. Besides providing an environment that facilitates the development and execution of applications that use such services, Cloud Integrator works as a mediator by providing mechanisms for building applications through composition and selection of semantic Web services that take into account metadata about the services, such as QoS (Quality of Service), prices, etc. Moreover, the proposed middleware platform provides an adaptation mechanism that can be triggered in case of failure or quality degradation of one or more services used by the running application in order to ensure its quality and availability. In this work, through a case study that consists of an application that use services provided by different cloud platforms, Cloud Integrator is evaluated in terms of the efficiency of the performed service composition, selection and adaptation processes, as well as the potential of using this middleware in heterogeneous computational clouds scenarios

Abstract:
Current models that assess infrastructure failure risk are â linear,â and therefore, only consider the direct influence attributed to each factor that defines risk. These models do not consider the undeniable relationships that exist among these parameters. In reality, factors that define risk are interdependent and influence each other in a â non-linearâ fashion through feedback effects. Current infrastructure failure risk assessment models are also static, and do not allow infrastructure managers and decision makers to evaluate the impacts over time, especially the long-term impact of risk mitigation actions. Factors that define infrastructure failure risk are in constant change. In a strategic manner, this research proposes a new risk-based infrastructure management framework and supporting system, Risk-Based Dynamic Infrastructure Management System (RiskDIMS), which moves from linear to non-linear risk assessment by applying systems engineering methods and analogs developed to address non-linear complex problems. The approach suggests dynamically integrating principal factors that define infrastructure failure risk using a unique platform that leverages Geospatial Information System services and extensions in an unprecedented manner. RiskDIMS is expected to produce results that are often counterintuitive and unexpected, but aligned to our complex reality, suggesting that the combination of geospatial and temporal analyses is required for sustainable risk-based decision making. To better illustrate the value added of temporal analysis in risk assessment, this study also develops and implements a non-linear dynamic model to simulate the behavior over time of infrastructure failure risk associated with an existing network of levees in New Orleans due to diverse infrastructure management investments. Although, the framework and RiskDIMS are discussed here in the context of levees, the concept applies to other critical infrastructure assets and systems. This research aims to become the foundation for future risk analysis system implementation.

Abstract:
The increasing mobility of people and resources demands additional efforts in exploring new capacities, offered by different technologies, which allows the supply of information and services in any place, any time and through any device, objective of the worldwide collaboration and communication web, known as Internet. Face to this increasing demand, current Internet is evolving from sharing to contribution model and in the near future, to collaboration model between providers and consumers. Although the current Internet has been extraordinarily successful, as a ubiquitous and universal means for communication, its architecture imposes limits for services deployment in heterogeneous and convergent environments, demanding new solutions to overcome the technological issues for Internet of Future achievement. These new solutions will be based on service oriented computing principles, providing the components of the new service framework for Internet of Future, called Internet of Services. In Internet of Services, convergent and heterogeneous mobile communication networks will be created on demand, providing a huge numbers of services, similar from functional point of view, but very different from the nonfunctional point of view, creating challenges for service selection which fits the service level agreement between providers and consumers. This work proposes a new solution for service selection process, combining algorithms commonly used for data mining, to perform dynamic and interactive service selection, fulfilling the mobility and collaborative requirements in a convergent and heterogeneous environment, such as Internet of Services. Therefore, this work contributes to Internet of Services research project, one of fundamental pillars to build the service oriented architecture, which will be used as framework for Internet of Future building, allowing many applications such as Location Based Services and Cloud Computing.

Abstract:

abstract: The Open Services Gateway initiative (OSGi) framework is a standard of module system and service platform that implements a complete and dynamic component model. Currently most of OSGi implementations are implemented by Java, which has similarities of Android language. With the emergence of Android operating system, due to the similarities between Java and Android, the integration of module system and service platform from OSGi to Android system attracts more and more attention. How to make OSGi run in Android is a hot topic, further, how to find a mechanism to enable communication between OSGi and Android system is a more advanced area than simply making OSGi running in Android. This paper, which aimed to fulfill SOA (Service Oriented Architecture) and CBA (Component Based Architecture), proposed a solution on integrating Felix OSGi platform with Android system in order to build up Distributed OSGi framework between mobile phones upon XMPP protocol. And in this paper, it not only successfully makes OSGi run on Android, but also invents a mechanism that makes a seamless collaboration between these two platforms.

With cloud computing technologies continue to progress, the open source cloud computing platforms have been emerged. Therefore, the application of Internet services has expanded operations depth and breadth of its service-level services through the cloud. Due to the characteristics of cloud computing, the existing business model can be changed to cloud environment quickly. The human and resources of small and medium-sized enterprises are limited, hence cannot spend a lot of budget to construct the private cloud of enterprise. With the advancement of cloud computing technology, open source cloud computing platform have emerged. However, OpenStack is one of the popular open source cloud computing platform. To provide more suitable OpenStack environment for business applications, a Service oriented Architecture based OpenStack (SoAOpenStack) is proposed in this study. SoAOpenStack is a three-tiered service model that can be used as an intermediary layer for resource allocation. Firstly, the Service Level Agreement (SLA) is used in SoAOpenStack, in order to differentiate the different levels of service requests. Then, the Priority scheduling algorithm, First Come First Served (FCFS) scheduling algorithm and First Fit resource allocation algorithm are used to configure the appropriate virtual machine. By using the proposed SoAOpenStack, the quality of service for users can be improved, the allocation of service requests and virtual resources can be achieved efficiently, and the waste of physical and virtual resources can be reduced.

Over the last few years, smartphones have become more powerful and prevalent, allowing people to take pictures, browse Internet, use map with GPS and play games, even support Internet services such as web server. Currently, there’re some operating systems that are available for smartphones use, such as Apple iOS, Google Android and Windows Mobile. Apple iOS is a closed platform, it restricts people develop applications; if developers want to provide more functions through those applications, they have to find out some special methods to bypass the system limits such as “Jailbreak”. In this paper, it used iPhone iOS for development to research how to provide web server with jailbreak, then it designed two architectures based on SOA (Service Oriented Architecture) and cloud computing to research how to share, search and manage smartphones resources. In the end, it discussed what limits and opportunities might be meeting in those two architectures. This research expects to improve communication between smartphones and any else devices. Also, these two architectures can be applied in other areas such as education and business.

In today’s commerce, consumers can have access to global networks of merchants and suppliers. At the same token, from the merchants Perspective, the how-to of integration of physical retailers with the network that bring the consumer to them also needs to be closely examined. From how to maximize the use of existing infrastructure to how to integrate the internal to external network of different suppliers can all contribute to a successful business. A solution the provides a efficient and flexible system of supply chain service is therefore needed. Cloud computing service provides an e-commerce platform that is flexible and scalable for the merchants. It provides an internet platform that is not confined by a set of hardware and bandwidth available to the merchants thus limiting the number of visitors and service requests to their websites. Through the techniques of cloud computing known as service container, it can rapidly deploy service request unto cloud server with its on-demand availability of computer system resources. A way to integrate the shared cloud platform with existing enterprise level cloud structure, to better streamline the process to scale up based on demand, is needed. Service-oriented architecture(SOA)is a style of software design where the cloud based system resource is subdivide based on ‘service’ perspective. It doesn’t confine to a monolithic architecture. Microservice is the next step evolution of Service-oriented architecture, where the application is further decomposed into different smaller services. The advantage of such design is that it reduces the complexity of programming, and it also provides better reusability and modularity for the system. Ways to rapidly upgrade and deploy an e-commerce system thru the use of SOA and microservice is what this paper would like to explore. The goal of this research is to explore various ways to rapidly develop supply chain platforms, through the discussion of e-commerce supply chain, Service-oriented architecture and cloud computing techniques.

Abstract:
Cloud computing has been one of the most important topics in Information Technology which aims to assure scalable and reliable on-demand services over the Internet. The expansion of the application scope of cloud services would require cooperation between clouds from different providers that have heterogeneous functionalities. This collaboration between different cloud vendors can provide better Quality of Services (QoS) at the lower price. However, current cloud systems have been developed without concerns of seamless cloud interconnection, and actually they do not support intercloud interoperability to enable collaboration between cloud service providers. Hence, the PhD work is motivated to address interoperability issue between cloud providers as a challenging research objective. This thesis proposes a new framework which supports inter-cloud interoperability in a heterogeneous computing resource cloud environment with the goal of dispatching the workload to the most effective clouds available at runtime. Analysing different methodologies that have been applied to resolve various problem scenarios related to interoperability lead us to exploit Model Driven Architecture (MDA) and Service Oriented Architecture (SOA) methods as appropriate approaches for our inter-cloud framework. Moreover, since distributing the operations in a cloud-based environment is a nondeterministic polynomial time (NP-complete) problem, a Genetic Algorithm (GA) based job scheduler proposed as a part of interoperability framework, offering workload migration with the best performance at the least cost. A new Agent Based Simulation (ABS) approach is proposed to model the inter-cloud environment with three types of agents: Cloud Subscriber agent, Cloud Provider agent, and Job agent. The ABS model is proposed to evaluate the proposed framework.

Abstract:
The forth industrial revolution is here, and with it Industry 4.0, which translates in many changes to the industry. With the introduction of paradigms like Internet of Things, Cyber Physical Systems or Cloud Computing, the so called Smart Factories are becoming a main part of today’s manufacturing systems. The vf-OS Project, where this thesis falls, intends to be an Open Operating System for Virtual Factories where the overall network of a collaborative manufacturing and logistics environment can be managed and thus enabling humans, applications and devices to communicate and interoperate in an interconnected operative environment. This thesis intends to contribute to the vision that any kind of sensor or actuator plugged to the virtual factory network, becomes promptly accessible in the operative environment and the services that it provides can be accessed and used by any API composing the system. Finally, it also aims to prove that an IoT Service Oriented Sys-tem constituted of open software components can be of great assistance and provide numerous contributions to the emerging Industry 4.0 and consequently to the Factories of the Future. With that aim, this thesis will focus on the development of two out of five inter-connected applications that answer not only to different use case scenarios presented in the vf-OS but also provide solutions to answer a practical agriculture scenario, which uses mainly IoT devices and other cutting-edge technologies like cloud compu-ting and FIWARE.

"Toward Customizable Multi-tenant SaaS Applications." Doctoral diss., 2016. http://hdl.handle.net/2286/R.I.40264.

Abstract:
abstract: Nowadays, Computing is so pervasive that it has become indeed the 5th utility (after water, electricity, gas, telephony) as Leonard Kleinrock once envisioned. Evolved from utility computing, cloud computing has emerged as a computing infrastructure that enables rapid delivery of computing resources as a utility in a dynamically scalable, virtualized manner. However, the current industrial cloud computing implementations promote segregation among different cloud providers, which leads to user lockdown because of prohibitive migration cost. On the other hand, Service-Orented Computing (SOC) including service-oriented architecture (SOA) and Web Services (WS) promote standardization and openness with its enabling standards and communication protocols. This thesis proposes a Service-Oriented Cloud Computing Architecture by combining the best attributes of the two paradigms to promote an open, interoperable environment for cloud computing development. Mutil-tenancy SaaS applicantions built on top of SOCCA have more flexibility and are not locked down by a certain platform. Tenants residing on a multi-tenant application appear to be the sole owner of the application and not aware of the existence of others. A multi-tenant SaaS application accommodates each tenant’s unique requirements by allowing tenant-level customization. A complex SaaS application that supports hundreds, even thousands of tenants could have hundreds of customization points with each of them providing multiple options, and this could result in a huge number of ways to customize the application. This dissertation also proposes innovative customization approaches, which studies similar tenants’ customization choices and each individual users behaviors, then provides guided semi-automated customization process for the future tenants. A semi-automated customization process could enable tenants to quickly implement the customization that best suits their business needs.

Effective control of the development costs and development time of a Service-oriented Architecture and Cloud Computing platform is crucial in ensuring the successful development of the information system. Cost and time estimates should be based on a full understanding of the functional size of the information system. Towards this purpose, this study examines a functional size measurement method called COSMIC, which is widely accepted and applied internationally. Its measurement structure incorporates the perspectives of both the developer and the user, and it is suitable for measuring the functional sizes of commercial application systems and real time systems. Through a case study, this study illustrates the process of applying COSMIC to measuring a Service-oriented Architecture And Cloud Computing platform. Three main contributions of this study are (1) introducing COSMIC FFP functional size measurement to assist Taiwanese professionals in accurately estimating functional sizes; (2) enhancing the accuracy in estimating the development costs and time taken to create the Service-oriented Architecture And Cloud Computing platform system, to ensure successful development of software projects; and (3) increasing the research strength in the areas of measurement and analysis in Taiwan and pointing out a new research issue that requires Taiwanese scholars to put more efforts in.
