Abstract:
This study, one of the first ever published in that field of research, is devoted to the geography of sacerdotal vocations and is divided in two parts. The first part deals with the differential rates of sacerdotal vocations which characterize some regions of the Province of Québec. The author bas calculated « index numbers of sacerdotal fecundity », and he studies the variability of these indexes within the limits of the diocese of Trois-Rivières. The data show that, before 1950, the St. Lawrence Lowlands region bas given a greater number of priests than the Valley of the St. Maurice River and a much greater number than the Laurentian Uplands. The second part of the article is more elaborated and treats of some « exterior » conditions which usually explain the number of vocations and justify the different contributions of various parts of the diocese. The various factors examined are demographic, familial, religious, economic, social, academic and historical. On this basis, the author formulates a series of observations which, taking into account the limited value of conclusions reached in social research, seem valuable for the understanding of the specific subject of this paper but also of many other problems concerning the social geography of the Province of Québec.

Abstract:
AbstractAimThe present paper examines the relationship between social factors, food consumption during television viewing, and overall television viewing and how these are associated with BMI when the role of familial and social factors are considered in a population-based birth cohort of pre-school children from Québec (Canada).MethodsThe analyses were performed using data from the Longitudinal Study of Child Development in Québec (1998–2002) (LSCDQ). The study follows a representative sample (n 2103) of children born in 1998 in the Canadian province of Québec. A nutrition assessment was conducted on 1549 children aged 4·5 years and included a 24 h dietary recall, an eating behaviour and television viewing questionnaire, and a measurement of children’s heights and weights. Statistical analyses were performed.ResultsNearly one-quarter of children ate at least twice daily in front of the television. Children who consumed snacks while watching television on a daily basis had higher BMI than children who did so less frequently. Children who ate snacks in front of the television every day, or some times during the week, ate more carbohydrates (total), more fat and less protein, fewer fruits and vegetables, and drank soft drinks more often than children who never ate snacks in front of the television.ConclusionsHealth professionals should target parents of children at risk of overweight/obesity with focused strategies to help children change the types of foods consumed during television viewing and to reduce the time spent watching television, particularly during meal times, which may change children’s dietary intake and eating patterns.

Abstract:

Abstract:
Foundry is a province-wide network of integrated health and social service centres for young people aged 12–24 in British Columbia (BC), Canada. Online resources and virtual care broaden Foundry’s reach. Its online platform – foundrybc.ca – offers information and resources on topics such as mental health, sexual wellness, life skills, and other content suggested by youth and young adults. The COVID-19 pandemic has presented significant and unique challenges to the youth and their families/caregivers served by Foundry. Disruptions to school, access to essential healthcare services such as counselling, familial financial security and related consequences has left young people with heightened anxiety. The Foundry team mobilized to respond to these extenuating circumstances and support BC youth and their families/caregivers during this hard time through three goals: (1) to amplify (and translate for young people and their families/caregivers) key messages released by government to support public health responses to the COVID-19 pandemic; (2) to develop content that supports the needs of young people and their families/caregivers that existed before COVID-19 and are likely to be exacerbated as a result of this pandemic; and (3) to develop and host opportunities through social media and website articles to engage young people and their families/caregivers by creating a sense of community and promoting togetherness and social connection during the COVID-19 pandemic. Each goal and plan integrated the leadership, feedback and needs of youth and their families through engagement with Foundry’s provincial youth and family advisory committees. Our study evaluated Foundry’s media response to the COVID-19 pandemic by recording/measuring (1) the website/social content created, including emerged thematic topic areas; (2) the process of topic identification through engagement with youth and young adults; (3) the social and website analytics of the created content; and (4) the constant, critical team-reflection of our response to the pandemic. Following measurement and reflection, our team offers recommendations to health promotion organizations for future preparedness.

Abstract:
This paper provides a preview into new primary research into sexual exploitation and human sex trafficking in Canada. The project, for which interviewing is complete and analysis is now underway, is qualitative research taking a grounded, open-minded approach with an underlying hypothesis that better outcomes may be gleaned from systems of service providers and stakeholders through improved coordination and collaboration. Previous research on related topics has often overlooked key stakeholders including police, prosecutors, political, First Nations and other community leaders. This research casts a wider net, incorporating the voices of over 65 experts across Manitoba, including: experiential survivors of sexual exploitation and sex trafficking, police, social workers, Aboriginal leaders, and people working in numerous non-government organizations who work to prevent sexual exploitation and assist victims to escape the sex industry. The research was focused in Manitoba where women and children continue to be victimized in the sex industry despite having one of the most comprehensive and well-funded counter sexual exploitation strategies of any province in Canada. The questions asked of subjects were designed to highlight barriers and opportunities for improved collaboration, interdiction and response to prevent people from being exploited in the sex industry and help others to escape it. While the data is in the early stages of analysis, some strong themes are already apparent to the researcher. These themes suggest that there may be a significant correlation between vulnerability to sexual exploitation and poverty, lack of opportunities, familial environment and relationships, and resilience. Generally, people from all perspectives seem to be stressing that there needs to be better coordination of resources, and more education and awareness across society on this issue.

Abstract:
Abstract The concept of autonomy is essential in the practice and study of gerontology and in long-term care policies. For older adults with expanding care needs, scores from tightly specified assessment instruments, which aim to measure the autonomy of service users, usually determine access to social services. These instruments emphasise functional independence in the performance of activities of daily living. In an effort to broaden the understanding of autonomy into needs assessment practice, the province of Québec (Canada) added social and relational elements into the assessment tool. In the wake of these changes, this article studies the interaction between the use of assessment instruments and the extent to which they alter how older adults define their autonomy as service users. This matters since the conceptualisation of autonomy shapes the formulation of long-term care policy problems, influencing both the demand and supply of services and the types of services that ought to be prioritised by governments. Relying on focus groups, this study shows that the functional autonomy frame dominates problem definitions, while social/relational framings are marginal. This reflects the more authoritative weight of functional autonomy within the assessment tool and contributes to the biomedicalisation of aging.

Abstract:
Bonjour! Welcome to Québec City, the capital of the province of Québec. This historic city was the host of the 2015 Dietitians of Canada Annual Conference. The submissions for this year's Canadian Foundation for Dietetic Research event represented the diversity of dietetic research conducted within Canada. Through the support of Dietitians of Canada and the Canadian Foundation for Dietetic Research, the 2015 event was both an exciting and informative exchange of research and experience-sharing efforts that inspired attendees. The topics highlighted from this year's abstracts include Community-Based Nutritional Care, Wellness and Public Health–Children, Determinants of Food Choice, Dietary Intake, Nutrition Health and Education, Dietetic Practice and Education, Clinical Research and Patient Service, Nutrition Social Media and the Web, Nutrition Labelling and Patient Services. Each presenter provided an 11 minute oral presentation (8 minutes for presenting and 3 minutes for questions). This allowed for meaningful interaction between the presenters and those attending the sessions. This year we had over 50 presentations. These presentations offer the newest insights into important research findings that you may be able to apply to your own practice. This Research Event would not be possible without the commitment and dedication of many people. On behalf of Dietitians of Canada and the Canadian Foundation for Dietetic Research, I would like to extend a special thank you to the 2015 Abstracts Review Committee who represented research, clinical nutrition, community nutrition, and education: Jennifer Brown (Registered Dietitian, The Ottawa Hospital Weight Management Clinic and Bariatric Surgery Program), Marketa Graham (Public Health Dietitian, Ottawa Public Health Unit), Mahsa Jessri (PhD Candidate, Faculty of Medicine, University of Toronto), Hélène Lowell (Nutrition Advisor, Health Canada), and Joseph Murphy (Professional Practice Co-ordinator, The Ottawa Hospital). I would also like to thank all of our moderators who took the time during the conference to keep our research presentation sessions on time. A special thank you to Shilpa Mukund and Greg Sarney at the Canadian Foundation for Dietetic Research for their assistance, patience, and support throughout the review process. I enjoyed interacting with many of you at the oral research presentations where we highlighted the findings from our dietetic colleagues across our country. Abstract:

Abstract:
The current research explores the importance of victimization of young people who have been exposed to family violence. It investigates the effects of violence accumulation in the last year and the consequences of their exposure to these specific circumstances. This project uses an adaptation of the Stress Process Model as a theoretical framework and two poly-victimization studies of children and teenagers as empirical evidence. Overall, this study shows that children who have been exposed to family violence experience more types of violence and adverse events than non-exposed children. They also suffer from anxiety, anger, depression and post-traumatic stress at a higher level. In concrete, the results show that the number of victimizations observed during the last year have a moderating effect on the anger of the 2 to 11 year-olds and on the post-traumatic syndrome of the 12 to 17 year-olds. Yet, the variation of traumatic symptoms is only weakly explained by the model used. Other variables must be taken into account to have a better understanding of how psychological consequences affect children who have endured the accumulation of diverse types of violence.
