Full textThe current research explores the importance of victimization of young people who have been exposed to family violence. It investigates the effects of violence accumulation in the last year and the consequences of their exposure to these specific circumstances. This project uses an adaptation of the Stress Process Model as a theoretical framework and two poly-victimization studies of children and teenagers as empirical evidence. Overall, this study shows that children who have been exposed to family violence experience more types of violence and adverse events than non-exposed children. They also suffer from anxiety, anger, depression and post-traumatic stress at a higher level. In concrete, the results show that the number of victimizations observed during the last year have a moderating effect on the anger of the 2 to 11 year-olds and on the post-traumatic syndrome of the 12 to 17 year-olds. Yet, the variation of traumatic symptoms is only weakly explained by the model used. Other variables must be taken into account to have a better understanding of how psychological consequences affect children who have endured the accumulation of diverse types of violence.

Full textIt has now been well-documented that mental disorders, like psychotic disorders, carry significant impacts for the family of the person afflicted. During a first-episode psychosis (FEP), the parents are the ones who are specifically sought to play a supportive role for their young adult and to contribute to the early interventions that promote rehabilitation and recovery. Early intervention programs based on schizophrenia treatment good practices also include family interventions. Despite the tendency to offer family interventions, we know little about the factors that can predict the parent’s ability to cope with their supportive role in this particular context. For the present research, a coping model was tested with a sample of 58 parents and in-laws who received services from a clinic specializing in the treatment of psychotic disorders in the early stages. The initial stance guiding the selection of variables claimed that coping in a context of FEP provides an opportunity for development, and even personal growth. The results obtained from the statistical analyses provide a systematic approach to understanding coping while considering the interinfluence of personal factors (certain characteristics of the parents), along with environmental factors (characteristics linked to the intervention). The final coping model invites parents to identify intervention targets that can help develop empowerment without compromising their ability to function socially. Participating in active coping strategies, such as committing to a family intervention and developing a collaborative relationship with social workers, represents a new avenue for the parental coping phenomenon. Focusing on early interventions, promoting active participation in rewarding social roles for parents and for those living with psychotic disorders, and encouraging the use of the many services offered in partnership are all part of the recommendations that have been issued in light of the results obtained under this thesis.

Full textThe focus of this research study are the interpersonal methods of family conflict management in sub-Saharan immigrant families living in Quebec. It looks at how sub-Saharan African immigrants deal with family conflicts and examines the justifications for the choices that they make in the process. The goal is to gain knowledge of the conflict management practices and methods used by sub-Saharan immigrants living in the Quebec region. For this purpose, semi-structured qualitative interviews were conducted with a sample of ten participants (n=10) including three women, one young woman, four men, and two young men. The results obtained indicate that sub-Saharans tend to prioritize ways of dealing with family conflicts that are used in their countries of origin. In matters of family conflict, they refer to four levels of resolution involving the immediate family, the extended family, community leaders, and, only as a last resort, government services. The choice of these management methods seems to show that sub-Saharans apply within a Western cultural context the traditional methods of conflict resolution that are practiced in their countries of origin. This can be damaging to family dynamics because it may generate cultural conflict in addition to the existing family dissensions. Keywords: immigration – sub – saharians – familiy conflicts – social ecology.

Full textThis thesis aimed at assessing service providers’ initial stance toward the implementation of a multi-level/multimodality evidence-based program (EBP). It also aimed at examining the association between initial stance and subsequent program use during the first two years of active implementation. To do so, the thesis examined the implementation of the EBP Triple P – Positive Parenting Program (Sanders, Cann, & Markie-Dadds, 2003) in the province of Quebec, Canada. In the first part of the thesis, profiles of providers were identified based on their pre-implementation attitudes toward EBPs, self-efficacy in conducting behavioral family interventions with parents, perception of their perception of their training needs related to working with parents, perception of the adequacy of their organization’s offices and physical space available to support the implementation of Triple P, and perception of the facilitators and barriers to its implementation (characteristics of the agency, staff and team leader). A latent profile analysis was conducted, and a two-profile solution was chosen as the best representation of the data. The two profiles differed mainly by the level of optimism or skepticism toward the implementation of Triple P. The associations between the profiles and three retrospective self-reported measures of program use (whether or not the provider used Triple P at least once during the 2-year period following their initial training) and amount of program use (number of families reached during the 2-year period, and number of sessions conducted during the last six months) were examined. Program use and amount of program use did not differ between the two profiles, suggesting that agencies willing to implement a new program should not held back from involving more skeptical providers into the implementation efforts. In the second part of the thesis, the indicators of initial stance, as well as sociodemographic characteristics were used to predict program use and amount of program use. Amount of program use was assessed using three self-reported prospective indicators (number of parent reached, number of activities conducted, and total duration of Triple P interventions conducted during the two-year period following initial training). An exploratory factorial analysis confirmed the adequacy of integrating these three measures within a multidimensional usage index. Regression analyses showed the influence of individual and contextual factors on the usage of an EBP. The thesis highlighted that, when implementing a new EBP, what matters is not to target only optimistic providers to receive training, but rather provide all providers with adequate support in order to reduce organizational barriers to implementation. It also underlined the importance of studying many indicators of usage in implementation research.

Full textSharing meals as a family is suggested as a public health measure because of its benefits on the health of children and teenagers. Recommendations for promoting family meals mainly derive from studies in health and nutrition. However, this thesis differs in that it studies family meals using a qualitative methodology inspired by social anthropology. It indeed presents a case study on the practices and representations associated with family meals in two single-parent families in the Québec region. The combined use of direct observation, participatory photography, logbook entries and interviews has shed new light on family meals by revealing the dynamics and meaning that underlie this practice. This study has also highlighted the variability of family meals within the families themselves, their important social dimension, their close association with family relations and the impact the composition of the family unit has on them.

Full textThis paper explores the enabling factors as well as challenges students may face in relation to the development of their personal sense of self-efficacy in the context of pedagogical supervision, as part of their initial training in social work at the baccalaureate level. A qualitative methodology was used through semi-structured interviews with six (6) participants. The results indicate that trust plays a decisive role in developing a sense of self-efficacy. The clarification of professional roles, the creation of a space for genuine dialogue, without judgment and shaped as a reflective practice between the supervisor and the supervised student, as well as a coaching approach, suited to the needs of this dyad, are elements that promote the development of a sense of self-efficacy.

Full textThrough sustained efforts to establish a professional role and to develop its own psychosocial and ecological perspectives, meaningful contributions from social work are likely to improve the quality of life of people with Alzheimer's disease and related conditions and their families. However, the role of the social worker in the interprofessional teams is not sufficiently clarified and this seems to cause confusion among the clientele and other professionals. This qualitative study, which is exploratory and descriptive in nature, aims to better understand social workers' perception of their roles in people with Alzheimer's disease or a related condition and the challenges of these roles in interprofessional collaboration. The analysis of the semi-structured individual interviews with 10 participants demonstrated that the definition and contribution of social workers within interprofessional teams remains to be clarified. It was possible to document the role of social workers and to identify three role issues: ambiguity, conflict and role overload, despite a limited number of participants.

Full textThe origins, experiences and backgrounds of newcomers to the province of Quebec have been increasingly diverse since the 1960s. The challenges of this new reality has led to the use of intervention approaches in an intercultural context that favour the development of a greater cultural sensitivity and the appropriation of strategies to overcome obstacles to understanding and collaborating between social stakeholders and those assisted. However, these approaches do little or do not address the religious or spiritual aspect, which can sometimes be a major part of the newcomer’s identity. While Canadian policies emphasize the need to consider the religious dimension, the current dominant view of this reality is yet to marginalize this aspect of the identity of newcomers. This characterizes the reality of the Muslim population who is held in fear because of public prejudice. Considering the previous findings and given the limited data available on this subject in the city of Quebec, this qualitative research seeks to explore and obtain a better understanding of the perspectives of eight Muslim immigrants regarding whether or not their religious identity is taken into consideration during services they receive or have received in the past by social workers. Throughout the use of the intercultural systemic approach, the data collected during the interviews made it possible to highlight diverse experiences regarding the way in which the religious is received in context of the aid relationship. It also made it possible to describe the social and political context in which this project is situated and the impact that this context has on the daily experience of the respondents. Key words: immigration, islam, identity, social intervention, intercultural approach, systemicapproach, qualitative research.
Gauthier, Audrey, and Audrey Gauthier.
Prison-based substance abuse treatment groups provide a specific context for intervention. Although several studies address their effectiveness, the group processes of these groups have been little explored in scientific literature. It became relevant to undertake this research, which attempts to capture the experience of men who participate in a psychoeducational group as part of the Toxico-Justice, a prison-based program. Based on symbolic interactionism, the study uses semi-directive interviews to develop a subjective picture of group experience and the role of interactions in this experience. The sample consisted of ten men who completed the Toxico-Justice program for less than one year at the time of the interview. Results highlighted the presence of eight therapeutic factors within the group: information sharing, self-understanding, cohesion, universality, altruism, catharsis, self-disclosure and interpersonal learning. The presence of these therapeutic factors has been moderated by some difficulties encountered in the interactions between the members of the group. The open group context as well as the prison context are among the factors that would have made interactions between group members more difficult. Nevertheless, the results show that participants met the group's objective of deepening their reflection on their using habits and reducing their risk of recidivism in relation to delinquent behaviors associated with drug addiction. Different avenues are explored in order to reduce the impact of the difficulties encountered in the participants' experience.

Full textIn the province of Quebec, in the last decade, numerous changes have taken place at the political, legal and social levels to promote the integration of trans people. In this context, it seemed relevant to examine, using a systemic and intersectional framework, the perception of 13 psychosocial professionals specialized regarding gender diversity regarding : 1. What are the main problems, needs and issues experienced by trans people ; 2. Which possible solutions of a systemic nature can be identified to respond to these problems, needs and issues ; 3. Which individual psychosocial intervention strategies are the most appropriate for trans people of all ages in order to promote their well-being. One of the main findings of this research is that, although the psychosocial professionals recognize that Quebec offers a relatively advantageous legal position for trans communities, the systemic cisgender context still forces trans people to a daily life hampered by guilt and verbal aggression, physical, paternalistic, condescending and contemptuous attitudes in their various living environments, including during contacts with health and psychosocial professionals. In doing so, we see the need for trans people and their experiences to be more recognized, de-pathologized, protected, esteemed and embraced by society. To achieve this, it will therefore be necessary to make society more aware of this reality, to normalize it through diversified models in all systems and media, regardless of the origin, nationality, age and socio-economic status of the trans people. What is more, this will undoubtedly mean reducing the costs, delays and obligations (e.g. multiple medical and psychosocial assessments) required of people who wish to transition legally and physically.

Full textThe Saint-Roch district of Quebec City is marked by a process of revitalization, a societal mix,and diverse social challenges. This qualitative research aims to explore and understand a local intervention which is deployed there and aims to improve cohabitation between the various social groups. This is the job of the agent.e de mixité. This thesis aims to answer the following research question : How is the function of the agent.e de mixité negotiated at the intersection of the perceptions of social actors concerned by the challenges brought about by the context of revitalization of the Saint-Roch district and their expectations for this function? The theoretical framework of the research is based on constructivism and is more precisely inscribed in symbolic interactionism. Data collection was carried out with seven participants from five social groups: citizens, citizens living in poverty, community workers, traders, and workers in an institution. The results allow us to understand their perceptions of the challenges present in the context of revitalization and social mix of the district such as cohabitation, gentrification, marginalization, and judiciarisation. It also allows understanding of their expectations regarding the function, position, and skills of the agent.e de mixité. Subsequently, the results of these individual interviews were presented to a group of 12 people involved with the Projet Vie de parvis. The discussions during this meeting shed light on the dimensions of the function of the agent.e de mixité which are negotiated at the intersection of these different expectations and perceptions such as temporality, outlines, scope, and extent of function. All content has been compiled and analyzed using Dedoose.
Cantin, Audrey. "Quelle est la place du soutien psychosocial dans le processus d'aide médicale à mourir au Québec?" Master's thesis, Université Laval, 2019. http://hdl.handle.net/20.500.11794/34545.
Full textThe Act Respecting End-of-Life Care came into force in Quebec in December 2015. Since that day, a person may, in certain circumstances, apply for medical assistance in dying (MAID). As such, anyone requesting this service has to go through a multistep process. However, as explained in this Act, the main health professionals involved in this process are doctors and the place of social workers is very little discussed and often absent. Therefore, our study aims to answer the following question: What is the role of psychosocial support in the practice of medical aid in dying in Quebec (MAID)? Currently in Quebec, there isn’t any study to our knowledge that is focused on the needs in terms of psychosocial support of a person requesting medical aid in dying. A literature review allowed the study of 273 essays that were filled to the National Assembly of Quebec during the Consultation from the Select Committee on Dying with Dignity. The analytic questioning approach (Paille & Mucchielli, 2012) as allowed the analysis of 20 essays that were selected for our sample because they made recommendations regarding psychosocial support in the MAID. Nonetheless, several observations and recommendations to that effect were not considered during the development of this Act. Based on Kübler-Ross (1969) model known as the five stages of of grief, the results of this study demonstrate the importance of psychosocial support during the medical aid in dying along the continuum care at the end of life, until death. These conclusions highlight the importance of multidisciplinary work in the MAID process, in order to allow optimal support when it comes to the needs of those persons at the end of life, more specifically when assessing the restrictive conditions and decisionmaking. Moreover, the psychosocial support of families during the process is just as important, even after death. Finally, this study highlights the place of social workers in supporting patients and family going through medical aid in dying. -- Keywords: Medical aid in dying, psychosocial support, end-of-life care, five stages of grief of Kübler-Ross

A first objective was to explore the positive and negative impacts of living with parental mental illness. A second objective was to examine their coping skills as well as their perception of the efficiency of theses coping skills. Qualitative method has been chosen to pursue these goals and relies on Lazarus and Folkman transactional stress theory. Five adolescents have been met in a semi-structured interview. They also filled a questionnaire on coping skills, the Kidcope. The themes were the social, scholar and familial functioning of these adolescents. They also discussed the parental mental illness, their perception of the impacts on their life and the learning they did through their experience.

Full textFollowing the entry into force of the Act respecting the representation of family-type resources and certain intermediate resources the new «Cadre de référence RI-RTF» developed by the Ministry of Health and Social Services oversees changes in professional practice. Knowing that such a change may lead to some resistance and failure, a review of the factors favoring implantation was developed. A questionnaire was sent to all the responsible managers for the implementation of the new «Cadre de référence RI-RTF» to assess the situation regarding the planning carried out by each health institution. The results demonstrate a particular lack to provide motivational incentives, to develop targets and indicators to monitor implementation. It also shows that the frame is well integrated in the culture and values of institutions.

Full textObjectives: This master’s thesis explores the learning gained from an internship experience within an "alternative" model of organization of front-line services and its potential application in subsequent medical practice. Method: The exploratory qualitative study is based on twelve interviews with practicing doctors who completed an internship at La Maison Bleue, our research environment; and three interviews conducted with key informants from La Maison Bleue, and from the health and social services network and academic institutions, involved in the management of internships. Results: The main lessons learned from the internship experience are related to: (1) taking into account people in their globality and in their context; (2) a reflexive perspective favorable to the deconstruction of prejudices and the questioning of norms, leading to a less stigmatizing approach; (3) the richness and scope of enhanced practice from an interdisciplinary perspective; (4) the definition of professional identity. Organizational barriers to the application of learning, based on the philosophy of the health and social services system and characteristics specific to the practice environment, have been identified. Facilitating factors have, for their part, been more identified on the human level but seem to have, ultimately, only a marginal effect on the real capacity of physicians to implement learning into their practice. Conclusions: This study highlighted the presence, within the Quebec health and social services system, of primary care physicians who express a desire to practice medicine differently in order to meet the needs and expectations of populations in vulnerable situations. The results of our study suggest the need for organizational awareness of the barriers that these physicians experience in implementing a practice in accordance with their values, ideals and identities.

Full textThis qualitative study of exploratory type allowed us to answer the research question: what are the perceptions of Cameroonian immigrant of the issues related to existing intra communal in Quebec City? The objective behind this study was the comprehension of organizational reasons in association of new Quebec citizen coming from Sub-Saharan Africa in Quebec City. The study is particularly focused on the Cameroonian immigrants in Quebec City. The analysis of the participants’ speeches in this study indicates that their idealism of immigrants, before they leave their origin’s country, is a country where they would fulfill themselves and thus they would offer better living conditions not only to them, but also to their families. This self-achievement from their idealism necessarily involves their contribution to the development and good functioning of the society which hosts them and which becomes their new home. This self-achievement made impossible or delayed by difficulties in land of immigration, the organization in association by ethnicity and or by the country of origin, is the way to live a solidarity that allows them to overcome their difficulties but also, to remember who they are, where they come from. Thus, their original cultures that have forged their identities, allows them to integrate the culture of the country of immigration.
