Abstract:
Popular Internet services are fundamentally shaping and reshaping traditional ways of people communication, thus having a major impact on their social life. Two of the very popular Internet services with this characteristic are Online Social Networks (OSNs) and Peer-to-Peer (P2P) systems. OSNs provide a virtual environment where people can share their information and interests as well as being in contact with other people. On the other hand, P2P systems, which are still one of the popular services with a large proportion of the whole Internet traffic, provide a golden opportunity for their customers to share different type of content including copyrighted content. Apart from the huge popularity of OSNs and P2P systems among regular users, they are being intensively used by professional players (big companies, politician, athletes, celebrities in case of OSNs and professional content publishers in case of P2P) in order to interact with people for different purposes (marketing campaigns, customer feedback, public reputation improvement, etc.). In this thesis, we characterize the behavior of regular and professional users in the two mentioned popular services (OSNs and P2P systems) in terms of publishing strategies, content consumption and behavioral analysis. To this end, five of our conducted studies are presented in this manuscript as follows: - “The evolution of multimedia contents", which presents a thorough analysis on the evolution of multimedia content available in BitTorrent by focusing on four relevant metrics across different content categories: content availability, content popularity, content size and user's feedback. - “The reaction of professional users to antipiracy actions", by examining the impact of two major antipiracy actions, the closure of Megaupload and the implementation of the French antipiracy law (HADOPI), on professional publishers behavior in the largest BitTorrent portal who are major providers of online copyrighted content. - “The amount of disclosed information on Facebook", by investigating the public exposure of Facebook users' profile attributes in a large dataset including half million regular users. - “Professional users Cross Posting Activity", by analyzing the publishing pattern of professional users which includes same information over three major OSNs namely Facebook, Google+ and Twitter. - “Professional Users' Strategies in OSNs", where we investigate the global strategy of professional users by sector (e.g., Cars companies, Clothing companies, Politician, etc.) over Facebook, Google+ and Twitter. The outcomes of this thesis provide an overall vision to understand some important behavioral aspects of different types of users on popular Internet services and these contributions can be used in various domains (e.g. marketing analysis and advertising campaign, etc.) and different parties can benefit from the results and the implemented methodologies such as ISPs and owners of the Services for their future planning or expansion of the current services as well as professional players to increase their success on social media

Abstract:
The Internet has grown enormously since the introduction of the World Wide Web in the early 90's. The evolution and wide spread deployment of cellular networks have contributed to make the Internet accessible to more people in more places. The cellular networks of today offer data rates high enough for most Internet services. Even so, the service quality experienced by the users is often lower than in wired networks. The performance of TCP has a large impact on user experience. Therefore, we investigate TCP in cellular networks and propose functionality to improve the situation for TCP. We have studied sources of delay and data loss, such as link layer retransmissions, queuing, and handover. Measurements were conducted in a GSM/GPRS testbed. The results indicate that TCP interact efficiently with the GSM link layer protocol in most cases. From experiments of queuing in GPRS, we conclude that with a smaller buffer delay is reduced significantly, but that TCP throughput is about the same as with a larger buffer. Furthermore, we propose an improved buffer management when a connection loses all its resources to traffic with higher priority. We also propose a scheme for data forwarding to avoid negative impact on TCP during handover for WINNER, a research system that was used to test ideas for LTE. The achievable data rates in cellular networks are limited by inter-cell interference that vary over the cell. Inter-cell interference can be mitigated with Coordinated Multipoint techniques (CoMP), techniques that currently are being standardized for LTE-Advanced. System wide CoMP is, however, not an option, since it would be too resource consuming. In order to limit the required resources for CoMP, we propose an approach to select a subset of users for CoMP that is based on user experience. Simulation results indicate that user experience, represented with application utility,  and fairness are improved compared to if only rate is considered in the user selection.

Abstract:
In this master thesis we investigate Mobile Internet with the help of a user perspective and discuss the problems of Mobile Internet today. As the Internet revolution evolves into the Mobile Internet revolution the need for usable and desirable wireless services is increasing. Designing web based services for mobile devices and mobile users is significantly different than designing web based services for desktop use. Not only are there differences in the underlying technology but also, and perhaps most important, in the way people use the services. Our main purpose in this thesis is to investigate the occurrence of Mobile Internet from a user’s perspective, to present a definition of Mobile Internet and provide a deeper understanding of the phenomenon. The main objective is to present a theoretical framework regarding Mobile Internet usage and to investigate which user related factors to consider when developing services adapted for mobile use.

Abstract:
This thesis studies the economic implications of a transition from a neutral to a non-neutral network. A mathematical model with an end to end ecosystem is developed, which includes a backbone internet service provider that provides connectivity for the content providers. The model also includes internet users that pay an access internet service provider for connectivity to interact with the content providers, advertisers that pay the content providers, and access internet service providers that charge the internet users for their connectivity. In the non-neutral regime, the content providers can pay the access internet service provider to access specialized services, a priority lane. The model is solved in a non-cooperative two stage game, and where the backbone and access internet service providers maximize their individual profits. Our analysis shows that the non-neutral unregulated regime always improves social welfare, investment and innovation levels, and lowers the congestion levels. We also show that the backbone internet service provider is always better off in the non-neutral regime, and therefore reduce the benefit of the other players. The result for the other players is generally positive in favor of a non-neutral regime, but much more ambiguous, especially for the access internet service providers. We also show that moderate regulation can increase social welfare. However, even moderate regulation might severely impair individual players, and too much regulation may also impair the non-neutral regime so that the overall social welfare is worse than in the neutral regime.

Abstract:
The communications world is moving from a standalone devices scenario to a all-connected scenario known as Internet of Things (IoT), where billions of devices will be connected to the Internet through mobile and fixed networks. In this context, there are several challenges to face, from the development of new standards to the study of the economical viability of the different future scenarios. In this dissertation we have focused on the study of the economic viability of different scenarios using concepts of microeconomics, game theory, non-linear optimization, network economics and wireless networks. The dissertation analyzes the transition from a Human Type Communications (HTC) to a Machine Type Communications (MTC) centered network from an economic point of view. The first scenario is designed to focus on the first stages of the transition, where HTC and MTC traffic are served on a common network infrastructure. The second scenario analyzes the provision of connectivity service to MTC users using a dedicated network infrastructure, while the third stage is centered in the analysis of the provision of services based on the MTC data over the infrastructure studied in the previous scenario. Thanks to the analysis of all the scenarios we have observed that the transition from HTC users-centered networks to MTC networks is possible and that the provision of services in such scenarios is viable. In addition, we have observed that the behavior of the users is essential in order to determine the viability of a business model, and therefore, it is needed to study their behavior and preferences in depth in future studios. Specifically, the most relevant factors are the sensitivity of the users to the delay and to the amount of data gathered by the sensors. We also have observed that the differentiation of the traffic in categories improves the usage of the networks and allows to create new services thanks to the data that otherwise would not be used, improving the monetization of the infrastructure and the data. In addition, we have shown that the capacity provision is a valid mechanism for providers' profit optimization, as an alternative to the pricing mechanisms. Finally, it has been demonstrated that it is possible to create dedicated roles to offer IoT services in the telecommunications market, specifically, the IoT-SPs, which provide wireless-sensor-based services to the final users using a third party infrastructure. Summarizing, this dissertation tries to demonstrate the economic viability of the future IoT networks business models as well as the emergence of new business opportunities and roles in order to justify economically the development and implementation of the new technologies required to offer massive wireless access to machine devices.

Abstract:
Encouraging seniors to stay at home as long as possible is associated with a higher risk of social isolation. Extensive researches have established the strong relationship between social isolation and health, considering social engagement as an important component influencing psychological well-being and self-esteem of elderly people. In other words, aging well at home cannot be reduced to the management of physical and cognitive frailties and technologies should also tackle the quality of life of the elderly by fostering their social interactions especially for those who are living alone. We postulate that ICTs could alleviate elderly loneliness, in order to cope with their social frailty. However, designing appropriate services and ensure their adoption by the elderly remain open questions, which we try to provide answers at both methodological and instrumental level. We propose an approach to design services for the elderly based on the participation of the future users as part of a "Living Lab". We illustrate this approach by our participation in a European project aiming at developing and evaluating Social TV services. The objective is to foster social interactions among peers to enhance or restore social ties, with the goal of increasing psychological well-being and self-esteem of the elderly living alone

Abstract:
>Magister Scientiae - MSc
The importance of mobile technology in improving the quality of life is not restricted to only a Hearing person, and the use of mobile devices among Deaf people is no longer limited, due to the advancements in technology Hearing loss cannot be seen but its effect is clearly visible to the persons suffering the loss. This results in a limited ability to communicate with the large world of hearing people. This research effort aims to design a SignSupport for emergency mobile application for Deaf people in Cape Town, empowering them with the same access to emergency service resources as hearing people. The proposed approach is to use a mobile application to contact standard emergency services on behalf of a Deaf person to a representative. The app will use a phone's GPS module to share the location of the victim and contact the nearest emergency service provider to attend to the Deaf victim; as well as keep the victim’s circle of family and friends informed. The app design is intuitive, simply requiring the Deaf victim to launch the app and choose an emergency type from the available options.

Song, Songbo. "Advanced personalization of IPTV services." Thesis, Evry, Institut national des télécommunications, 2012. http://www.theses.fr/2012TELE0001/document.

Full text
Abstract:
Internet Protocol TV (IPTV) delivers television content to users over IP-based network. Different from the traditional TV services, IPTV platforms provide users with large amount of multimedia contents with interactive and personalized services, including the targeted advertisement, on-demand content, personal video recorder, and so on. IPTV is promising since it allows to satisfy users experience and presents advanced entertainment services. On the other hand, the Next Generation Network (NGN) approach in allowing services convergence (through for instance coupling IPTV with the IP Multimedia Subsystem (IMS) architecture or NGN Non-IMS architecture) enhances users’ experience and allows for more services personalization. Although the rapid advancement in interactive TV technology (including IPTV and NGN technologies), services personalization is still in its infancy, lacking the real distinguish of each user in a unique manner, the consideration of the context of the user (who is this user, what is his preferences, his regional area, location, ..) and his environment (characteristics of the users’ devices ‘screen types, size, supported resolution, ‘‘ and networks available network types to be used by the user, available bandwidth, ..’) as well as the context of the service itself (content type and description, available format ‘HD/SD’, available language, ..) in order to provide the adequate personalized content for each user. This advanced IPTV services allows services providers to promote new services and open new business opportunities and allows network operators to make better utilization of network resources through adapting the delivered content according to the available bandwidth and to better meet the QoE (Quality of Experience) of clients. This thesis focuses on enhanced personalization for IPTV services following a user-centric context-aware approach through providing solutions for: i) Users’ identification during IPTV service access through a unique and fine-grained manner (different from the identification of the subscription which is the usual current case) based on employing a personal identifier for each user which is a part of the user context information. ii) Context-Aware IPTV service through proposing a context-aware system on top of the IPTV architecture for gathering in a dynamic and real-time manner the different context information related to the user, devices, network and service. The context information is gathered throughout the whole IPTV delivery chain considering the user domain, network provider domain, and service/content provider domain. The proposed context-aware system allows monitoring user’s environment (devices and networks status), interpreting user’s requirements and making the user’s interaction with the TV system dynamic and transparent. iii) Personalized recommendation and selection of IPTV content based on the different context information gathered and the personalization decision taken by the context-aware system (different from the current recommendation approach mainly based on matching content to users’ preferences) which in turn highly improves the users’ Quality of Experience (QoE) and enriching the offers of IPTV services

Abstract:
With the network heterogeneity and increasing demand of multimedia services, Quality of Experience (QoE) becomes a crucial determinant of the success or failure of these services. In this thesis, we first propose to analyze the impact of quality metrics on user engagement, in order to understand the effects of video metrics (video startup time, average bitrate, buffering ratio) and content popularity on user engagement. Our results show that video buffering and content popularity are critical parameters which strongly impacts the end-user’s satisfaction and user engagement, while the video startup time appears as less significant. On other hand, we consider subjective approaches such as the Mean Opinion Score (MOS) for evaluating QoE, in which users are required to give their assessment according to contextual information. A detailed statistical analysis of our study shows the existence of non-trivial parameters impacting MOS (the type of device and the content type). We propose mathematical models to develop functional relationships between the QoE and the context information which in turn permits us to estimate the QoE. A video content optimization technique called MDASH (for MOS Dynamic Adaptive Streaming over HTTP) is proposed, which improves the perceived QoE for different video sessions sharing the same local network, while taking QoE fairness among users as a leitmotiv. We also propose a utility-based approach for video delivery optimization, in which a global utility function is computed based on different constraints (e.g. target strategies coming from the actors of the delivery chain)

Abstract:
Internet based services have become an important part of our lives, and broadband access has reached the commodity phase in most developed countries. A growing portion of the time spent on-line among younger Internet users are related to social media and entertainment services. This evolution is not possible or even desirable to reverse, but for certain user groups it is clear that some level of control and restrictions are required. There are many examples of children which are addicted to "being online" while their parents do not even know about the situation. There are many solutions for parental control in the market today which address this problem, but they are all either very easy to bypass or too difficult to understand and use for e.g. parents. The children are in many cases smarter than their parents when it comes to Internet. The scope of this project is to make a prototype of an Internet Control solution for Residential Users based on the Raspberry PI model B HW and Linux OS, or an alternative platform if found appropriate. The solution should be controlled from a central server, and the administration interfaces offered to system administrators should come from here. Candidate interfaces are app?s for iphone and/or Android, SMS control and regular web interfaces. The development is expected to require programming in Java and HTML, and a selection of whatever scripting tools/languages appropriate on the development platform. Knowledge about Linux, iOS and Android are beneficial.

Abstract:
In the current available research concerning the real usage of the internet among the young children, most researchers particularly emphases on the risk and opportunities regarding the active use of the internet. Limited experimental research emphases on the role-based and impact of the parent guidelines in the context. In the current studies, internet parenting methods are well-defined and operationalized to study the influence on the real usage of the internet among children both at home and in school. In these researches two major dimensions are distinguished in the internet parenting methods: that is parental control and parental warmth. The methods differ when controlling for parent gender, educational background, and age appropriateness. Parenting methods are also seen to be connected significantly to the level of parent internet usage, internet attitude and internet experience. Parental methods have been found to contribute greatly to the child internet usage. The highest internet level usage among the children is apparent when the parents approve a permissive parenting method; the lowest level is observed when the parent approves controlled internet parenting method. The variables internet parenting method, parent internet behavior, and parent educational background greatly influence Internet usage of children at home and school. The aim of this thesis is was to addressing a fundamental research question: “What parents think about their children’s Internet use.” The theoretic and practical inferences are discussed and directions for future research. The research question in this thesis involves a qualitative study that involves a semi-structured interview conducted in a comfortable and friendly environment. As a requirement eleven children and five families were interviewed. The parents who were interviewed are well aware of their children internet access and usage.

Abstract:
The Internet Corporation for Assigned Names and Numbers (ICANN) is the organization that provides the technical support for the Internet. ICANN is a nonprofit organization based in California and is under contract to the United States Department of Commerce. It has come under attack from many sides because it is contracted through the U.S. government and it is a private entity. One of the main components of the controversy surrounding ICANN is whether it can represent a global society as a private entity and whether that private entity can represent Internet users. I focus my study on ICANN's Board of Directors. I evaluated the Board on the dimensions of descriptive, substantive, and formal representation (Pitkin 1967). Evaluation of ICANN's descriptive representation focused on the Board members' sex, educational backgrounds, and nationalities and compared the geographic representation on the Board to the global distribution of Internet users. The assessment of substantive representation looked at the Board members' votes to determine if patterns could be viewed based on members' descriptive characteristics. Finally, the evaluation of ICANN's formal representation examined its Bylaws, its 2006 contract with the U.S. Department of Commerce, and the California Nonprofit Public Benefit Corporations Code. The analysis found that the descriptive representativeness was low. The ICANN Board does not mirror Internet users: few women have served on the Board, those with technical educational backgrounds dominated, and the regions were not represented proportionate to their use of the Internet. Analysis of substantive representativeness was inconclusive and further investigation is needed. The formal representation analysis suggests that the ICANN Board has been formally representative.

Abstract:
Objectives: Previous research regarding Early Intervention in Psychosis (EIP) has mainly adopted quantitative methodologies, in order to study the effectiveness of EIP services. Research studies which have explored service-users’ experiences of EIP services are small in number. This research aimed to explore service-users’ experiences of being in contact with an EIP service, its impact of their experience of psychosis and current life situation. Design: Interpretative Phenomenological Analysis (IPA) was used to conduct an in-depth qualitative study of a small sample of EIP service-users, in order to explore their experiences of being in contact with the service. Method: Semi-structured interviews were conducted with eight service-users who had been receiving a service from an EIP team for more than two years and were recruited using a purposive sampling method. Verbatim interview transcripts were analysed using IPA. Results: Five super-ordinate themes, developed from the analysis, are discussed under the headings: Stigma, Relationships, Understanding the experiences, Sense of agency and Impact on sense of self. Sub-themes of these super-ordinate themes are also discussed. Conclusions: The themes developed from the analysis were envisioned as representing an overarching theme of ‘A personal journey of recovery’, which was influenced by participants’ involvement with the EIP service. Clinical implications include the need for EIP services, as with other mental health services, to find ways to promote recovery and create opportunities for agency and control. Future research directions are also discussed.

Abstract:
In addition to the problems that may occur in the Internet, the people who test mobile internet services confront additional challenges due to the wireless environment. If something goes wrong, it is very problematic for a tester to determine exactly where the error occurred and the reason why it occurred. Is it the software in the telephone that does not work properly, is the GPRS link stable, is the core network of the Internet working as it should, or is there something wrong at the server? The staff at Sony Ericsson has major difficulties determining where the origin of a problem is. They often simply know that something is not working. The major effort is often to detect the source of the actual problem rather than solving it. The PlayNow service provided by Sony Ericsson will be used as a reference service in this master’s thesis project. The PlayNow service is currently used for distributing ring signals. It is built on Internet standards, but depends on GSM’s specific features both for distribution and for e-commerce which makes it hard to test using existing web test tools. This Master’s Thesis examines the difficulties in establishing robust IP traffic links between a server and a mobile telephone. It examines the entire communication path between the mobile telephone and the server, and focus on how to detect (potential) errors. Within this project, development of a test tool is included. It supports features necessary for testing the reference service PlayNow. This report covers many different technologies within the mobile internet such as GSM, GPRS, and mobile IP. Moreover, the normal infrastructure of the Internet will also be considered; as well as how the different parts interact in an environment consisting of a mobile Internet with GPRS. A major part of the project has been evaluation of the communication link between a mobile device and a server. Additionally, some efforts have focused on developing the new test tool.

Banchs, Roca Albert. "Fair Allocation of Network Resources for Internet Users." Doctoral thesis, Universitat Politècnica de Catalunya, 2002. http://hdl.handle.net/10803/7025.

Full text
Abstract:
In a commercial Internet, the traffic behavior is determined by the contracts between the ISPs and the users, where a user can be a dial-up user, or one corporate network or a group of individual customers or networks. Since the user is the entity with whom the contract is signed, it should also be the unit to which network resources are allocated. However, while much research in the past has been directed to fair resource allocations for flows (e.g. maxmin fairness and proportional fairness), much less effort has been invested on fair allocation of resources for users. The work done in this thesis tries to fill this gap: we study how to share fairly the network resources among users, when a user can possibly send several flows through different paths.

The first part of the thesis focuses on the definition of a fairness criterion for the above problem: user maxmin fairness. The proposed criterion is based on the concepts of utility and welfare developed in the field of political science and political economics. We subdivide the problem of fairly allocating the network resources among users in two subproblems: 1) achieve fairness with respect to the utility experienced by the different users (inter-user fairness) and 2) achieve fairness with respect to the utility experienced by the different flows of a user (intra-user fairness). User maxmin fairness is the result of combining the two welfare functions that solve these two subproblems.

Along with the user maxmin fairness criterion, in this thesis we propose a mechanism to implement it: the User Fair Queuing (UFQ) mechanism. In UFQ, a user is allowed to assign any label values to his packets to indicate their relative priority. At the ingress, an algorithm is used to control these labels assigned by the user. We have shown mathematically that: (a) the proposed label control does not allow the asymptotic throughput of a user to exceed its fair rate, and (b) if users label their packets in order to maximize their level of satisfaction or utility, then the resulting bandwidth allocation is user maxmin fair.

In the last part of the thesis, we propose a network architecture for the Internet: the User Fair Differentiation (UFD) architecture. The UFD architecture extends the UFQ mechanism in such a way that its good features for resource sharing are preserved. In addition, UFD provides service differentiation, inter-domain communication, real-time traffic support and extensions for multicast and wireless. The fact that neither admission control nor signaling are required strongly contributes to the simplicity of UFD. The fact that no per-user state is kept at core nodes makes the proposed architecture scalable.

The performance of the UFD architecture has been extensively evaluated via simulations and a prototype implementation. Both simulation and experimental results have validated the architecture proposed in this thesis.

Abstract: Observing users interacting with user interfaces is the basis of traditional usability evaluation methods as user tests and field observation. In spite of their popularity and efficiency in finding usability problems, these traditional methods are considered expensive, due to the costs of involving users in the evaluation, preparing the infrastructure and specially, due to the costs of executing the methods and analyzing the results. The quality of the results obtained with these methods depends on the users participating of the evaluation, who need to represent all the user's profiles of the evaluated application. In the Web, due to the diversity and distributed location of the users, it is difficult to obtain representative users. In traditional methods, usability experts analyze the behavior of each user interacting with the application in order to detect usability problems. This subjective analysis depends on the knowledge and work of the expert to find the problems. This way, the traditional methods became too expensive when it is necessary to involve high number of users in the evaluation. Another important aspect of Web applications is their frequent evolvement, which requires usability evaluations performed frequently to avoid usability problems caused by changes on the applications. The same way, the traditional methods are too expensive to be performed in a regular basis. In that context, this thesis proposes an automatic method for usability evaluation, as an alternative approach to deal with the difficulties mentioned above. This way, this thesis supports the hypothesis that is possible to decrease the difficulties regarding to the traditional methods through a usability evaluation method based on the automatic capture and analysis of user's interaction. Thus, this thesis, presents the development of the WebHint, a remote and automatic usability evaluation method for Web applications. The proposed method was applied in three usability studies, and their results validated the WebHint as a feasible alternative to perform remote and automatic usability evaluations of Web applications

Abstract:

Research and case studies have emphasized the role Early Adopters play (as gatekeepers and disseminators) in the diffusion of new technologies and innovations (Rogers & Cartano, 1962; Robertson, 1971; Rogers, 1983; Flynn & Goldsmith 1993). Marketers have acknowledge the need to identify, profile, utilize and potentially influence Early Adopters to successfully launch a new product or service (Robinson, 1988). This research assists with identifying the salient characteristics of Early Adopters (those with a high predisposition towards innovativeness) of wireless phone features and services. The findings provide a framework for future identification of Early Adopters within the wireless market, as well as, contributing to the study of Early Adopters in general. The research utilized a random sample of 3,045 wireless phone users within an eleven state calling area. Each user completed a detailed survey regarding telecommunication needs, usage and attitudes. Basic demographics, psychographics and lifestyle measures were also collected from each user.An adapted cross-sectional measure of innovativeness (Midgely & Dowling 1978) based on prior wireless phone features and services adoption behavior, was used to identify a predisposition towards innovativeness, with regard to wireless features and services. Past research has identified the cross-sectional innovativeness measure as viable surrogate of adoption behavior (Stanton, 1999). A strong relationship was observed between traditional time-of-adoption measures and the cross-sectional innovativeness measures, within this analysis. The cross-sectional innovativeness measure was utilized as the dependent measure for the analysis. Two dependent variables were constructed from the cross-sectional innovativeness measure. The first dependent variable was a continuous variable, employing the cross-sectional innovativeness measure as a ratio scale variable. The variable provided a distribution from 0 (low innovativeness) to 20 (high innovativeness). The second dependent variable was a categorical variable that divided the cross-sectional innovativeness measure into to three distinct categories of adoption, similar to the adoption categories identified by Rogers (1983) in his definitive book Diffusion of Innovations. Similarly, the categories were labeled as Early Adopters, Middle Majority and Later Adopters.Three sets of independent variables were developed, based on past research findings concerning Early Adopters of the technology market and available measures found in the study questionnaire. The first set of independent variables, Demographics (Model 1), included the following predictor variables: age, marital status, education, household income, children in the household and home ownership. The second set of independent variables, Psychographics (Model 2), included self-perceived attitudes towards opinion leadership and risk taking/venturesomeness. The third set of independent variables combined both of the Demographics and Psychographics variables into one comprehensive set.In general the results of the study support many of the hypothesis posed. Few exceptions were noted. Early Adopters of the wireless market tended to be younger, more likely to be single, college educated, with higher household incomes, with fewer children, less likely to be owners of their primary residence, more likely to perceive themselves as opinion leaders, as well as having positive attitudes towards risk taking/venturesomeness. Analysis of the independent models, utilizing regression coefficients and uniqueness indices for the continuous dependent variable, and the proportional chance criteria and Press?s Q for the categorical dependent variable, pointed to the Demographics and Psychographics (Model 3) as the strongest model (followed by the Demographics (Model 1)). Age and income variables (followed by Opinion Leadership) provided the greatest contribution to the explanatory power of the independent models. The findings aid with present and future diffusion of wireless technologies, including wireless e-mail, wireless internet access and M-commerce, as well as other categories such as telecom and the technology market in general. The analysis marks the first step in a process of identifying, profiling, utilizing and potentially influencing Early Adopters of the wireless technology market.

The management of the university was interested to find out how satisfied the employees were with the new services, so a master’s thesis topic for studying the experiences of the personnel was announced. The service provider, Canon, was interested in the results of the research, too. Data for the study was collected with a user satisfaction questionnaire that was sent to the personnel in February 2015. The survey consisted of open ended and closed-ended questions. The research was a qualitative case study and the emphasis was on qualitative analysis of the open ended questions. The data collected from the closed questions was analysed quantitatively. The findings of the study revealed that the users were quite satisfied with the new print services, and that some of the new features were highly appreciated. However, a few relatively clear areas of dissatisfaction existed, too. This research contributed to science by adding knowledge about managed print services, and on a more detailed level, about how personnel of a university experienced a change from print services managed by the university to print services provided by an outside service provider. Also, a possible positive relationship between implementing a managed print services solution and user satisfaction was found. On a practical level the findings provided helpful information for the university and the service provider for improving the new print services. Also, this study contributed to the research of information systems success, user resistance and user satisfaction in the context of managed print services.

Internet services can make a significant contribution towards the development of people both in the urban and rural areas. The study is focused on the demand for internet services in the community of Nkowankowa in the Greater Tzaneen Municipality (GTM) in Limpopo province. Internet services bring multiple opportunities such as information, e-mails, games, shopping, banking, and real time news. The study examined the nature of demand for internet infrastructure and services in the area. The study further explored strategies that may be cost-effective and affordable to internet users and to recommend strategies through which the municipality can improve internet service delivery. The use of internet services was also examined (i.e., what are internet services needed for)? To understand these challenges and obtain in-depth information, both qualitative and quantitative research approach were used. The study population consisted of business owners (SMMEs), schoolmaster, students, and management in the municipal management committee, internet café owners, computer home users, police management and health management in Nkowakowa community in the Greater Tzaneen Municipality, selected through a purposive sampling method. These management workers are main role players in the use of internet services. A small sample of 40 respondents was selected based on the potential or likelihood that the respondents had same knowledge and interest in internet services. The researcher has selected the relative small sample because of the limited time frame. The findings reveal that Nkowankowa has a high shortage of internet infrastructure such as telephony. The entire Section C does not have a landline infrastructure and the only possibility is mobile connection, which is expensive. The internet cafés stand at 2 against the population of 30515 (Greater Tzaneen Municipality IDP: 2005-2006:12). The community depends on those two internet cafés. Learned individuals and business have afforded to connect. Others depend on internet services from their institutions, work place, and internet cafes. Challenges of the infrastructure unavailability such as telephony have a negative impact on utilization. It was recommended that the Municipality should partner with NGOs and community based organizations to deliver internet and related services to the community.

The development of Internet has provided fertile ground for the rapid growth of Internet services. Nowadays, Internet users have many Internet services to choose from. The Internet service providers must also find ways and means to attract users in the midst of this competitive environment. This research involves studying the relationship between Internet services and users, specifically from the perspective of (1) habit and (2) personality. They are often considered to be enduring characteristics associated with user behavior. This research included 23 commonly seen Internet applications to consider how users who are different in Big Five Personality traits influence users’ frequency in using these services. This research obtained the results that personality does affect how frequent users use these applications but differ in the influential traits. This research also developed a model that considered the impact of habit, trust and quality on IT continuance intention in the context of habitually downloading free software through specialized downloading websites. It was shown that habit has a direct influence on continuance intention. However, there was also evidence of considered decision in term of determining the quality of the downloaded software.

Recently, under the promotion by the government and enterprises, more and more people use the Internet in Taiwan. Therefore, the number of Internet Service Provider (ISP) increases rapidly. In order to get the biggest benefit in such a competitive market, it is necessary for ISPs to segment Internet users and select the target market. ISPs must develop marketing strategies based on the consumption trend of Internet users to make the biggest profit. The purpose of this research is to investigate if the decision-making process that included the motive of the purchase, style of information search, evaluation rule, purchase method, and type of Internet service were different for Internet users in different lifestyle segments. According to the literature, Internet users were segmented by lifestyle variables into four categories: fashion, leisure, quality, and confidence. The study shows that there are significant differences in four motive factors among the four segments of Internet users, including social interaction, new knowledge seeking, entertainment, and file transfer. There are also significant differences in four evaluation-rule factors including added service, linking quality, firm characteristics, and price. Moreover, the four segments of Internet users differ in the style of information search and the type of Internet service chosen. Finally, no differences were found for purchase method among the four segments. It is Internet age now, the conclusion of the research may provide enterprises with useful information to select target market and develop marketing strategies. ISPs can then be devoted to satisfying consumer’s need and enhance competitive advantage.

Personalization is one of the popular services on Internet. To provide personalization, we first have to know where the needs of Internet users are. We use data mining technology to analyze the access patterns of Internet users. By the observed results we get, we can find out of where the needs of Internet users are. Each of the Internet Services Provider and the Web Site Administrator can use these results to provide personalization service for Internet users. In this thesis, we propose two kinds of frameworks to provide personalization in different environments on Internet. These two different environments are the single Web Site and the relationship between multiple Web Sites. The major technique that used in our frameworks is data mining. The methods of data mining technologies we use in these frameworks are including Weighted Association Rules, Multi-level Association Rules, and Classification. By using the framework we proposed could increase the efficiency of user getting to their goal Web page.

The main purpose of this study is trying to explore the key determinants of the internet user's adoption of 3.5G mobile broadband internet services in Taiwan. The study also attempts to validate the appropriateness of the Unified Theory of Acceptance and Use of Technology (UTAUT) within the context of the adoption of 3.5G mobile broadband internet services. A questionnaire was developed and modified based on UTAUT orginal scale. The questionnaire was distributed through the internet questionnaire website to collect 196 samples for quantitative analysis. Multiple regressions analysis and path analysis were utilized to evaluate the collected data. The results of this study indicate that the two main predictors relevant to this study ( performance expectancy and effort expectancy) were significant and explained a significant amount of the variance in predicting internet users’behavior intention to adopt 3.5G mobile broadband internet services. And behavior intension did predict the usage behavior positively. However, no counstruct that affect the 3.5G mobile broadband internet services usage behavior significantly. The results also indicate that gender, age and education level moderated the relationships between the independent variables and the dependent variable (behavioral intention). This study finally makes some suggestions to themobile telecommunication service providers for promoting 3.5G mobile broadband internet services in Taiwan. In order to raise the behavior intention, the mobile telecommunication carriers should enhance the 3.5G mobile broadband data transmission speed, operation conveniences, and lower the monthly fee rate. Making internet users and potential users know how much benefit the 3.5G mobile broadband internet services could bring.

Abstract:
Despite the widespread adoption of Internet banking, no guidelines exist on what functionality the techno-savvy Generation-Y customer segment (20–37 years) expects from Internet banking websites. This research investigated the functionality that South African Generation-Y customers require from this transacting platform. A user-centred design philosophy with a mixed method research design was used. The technological characteristics of Generation-Y, abstracted from the literature, were aligned with functionality trends of future Internet banking websites to formulate an initial list of Internet banking functionality guidelines. These were evaluated using a survey and interviews, and were also used in a heuristic evaluation of the Internet banking platforms of five South African banks. The findings were integrated to synthesise functionality guidelines. A visual representation of these guidelines was constructed as wireframes for evaluation by Generation-Y users. This study makes a contribution by providing a validated list of Internet banking functionality guidelines for Generation-Y banking customers.

Mohanlal, Ashwin. "Factors influencing South African Internet users purchasing a product or service online." Thesis, 2006. http://hdl.handle.net/10413/3021.

Abstract:
Of the various channels to market, one that has probably received the greatest attention and produced the highest expectations of impact and adoption is the Internet (Wright and Clark, 2- 005: 1). According to Feher and Towell (1997), and Paul (1996), as cited by Vijayasarathy and Jones (1998: 322), the Internet promises a number of benefits to both businesses and consumers. From a business perspective, the Internet can be a powerful medium to establish a unique relationship with consumers (Pattinson and Brown, 1996: 31). For the consumer, the Internet can be a valuable communication medium to facilitate controlled, non-linear search for up-to-date information, simulated product and service testing, and provide assistance with comparison- shopping and decision-making (Hoffman et ai, 1996: 26). The Internet has grown at an incredible rate. By March 2006, there were approximately 1023 million Internet users worldwide (internetworldstats, 2006: 1). However, the Internet has not grown in South Africa at the pace that it has grown in first world countries such as America, Japan and the United Kingdom (internetworldstats, 2006: 1). According to Computer Industry Almanac Inc (2005: 1), South Africa had 4 780 000 million Internet users in 2005. This is approximately 0.5% of the worlds Internet users. Global studies have been conducted on why Internet users purchase online, but not much information is available on why South African Internet users purchase online. Moreover, this limited information is mainly available only commercially. South African Internet research companies such as Webcheck, World Wide Worx and eMarketer generally charge between R6000 and R14 000 (2005 Rand prices) for South African online shopping studies, which generally deal more with Internet usage, buying behaviour in terms of products and services purchased, online shopping trends and to a limited extent factors that influence South African Internet users purchasing online. Due to South Africa's diversity and unique situation in terms of its economy (what is (commonly referred to as it's digital divide), the factors that influence South African Internet users purchasing online may not be the same as the factors influencing Internet users from other countries purchasing online. In order to investigate the factors that influence South African Internet users purchasing online, the following research objectives were identified: • Primary Research Objective. To identify factors that influence South African Internet users purchasing a product or service online. • Secondary Research Objective Number 1. To determine the significance of the identified factors that influence South African Internet users purchasing a product or service online. • Secondary Research Objective Number 2. To determine the relative importance of the identified factors that influence South African Internet users purchasing a product or service online. A questionnaire (provided in Annexure One) was developed to investigate the above research objectives and was distributed, via e-mail to 437 employees of Ninham Shand (Pty) Ltd. A response rate of 269 was achieved. The research found that the following factors were rated important to the sample purchasing online: (1) the price of the product or service being purchased; (2) the convenience to the Internet user; (3) the experience as an Internet user; (4) the web site layout; (5) the ease of use of the web site; (6) the brand of the product or service; (7) the type of product or service; (8) the availability of online information on the product or service; (9) the method of payment; and (10) the web site security features. From the above factors, the web site security features was ranked as the most important factor influencing respondents purchasing a product or service online, the ease of use of the web site was ranked as the second most important factor and the web site layout was ranked as the third most important factor influencing respondents purchasing a product or service online. Based on these findings, it can be concluded that the results from this study can contribute to the body of knowledge on online consumer behaviour theory and knowledge of South African Internet users.

The Impacts of Cognitive Style and the Personal Involvement on Use: Analysis of the Evidence for Wireless Internet Services Users Student:Wen-fu TuAdvisor:Dr. Hsiao-hui Wang Institute of Informatics Yuan-Ze University ABSTRACT The progress of the digital technology, the popular of the Internet, the free competition of the telecommunication, all those phenomena made the market become more active. The companies must provide better services for customers, by which they can get benefit. Understanding their customers deeper is the most important for the tech marketing. This study employs “adoption—innovation” cognitive styles and “the personal involvement” to analyze the characteristics of the innovation-oriented customers. The objective of the study is to understand the behaviors of the users who use WAP services. Although there is no significant difference is found for adoption/innovation and high/low personal involvement respectively, the findings show that there are noticeable differences among clusters through cross analysis. The users who decided to continue to use WAP services tend to have middle-degree innovation and low-degree personal involvement. The result suggests that the marketing professionals must concern not only “high innovation/personal involvement” users but also “low innovation/personal involvement” ones. On many occasions, various scholars have made researches on Internet usage in developing countries and have focused too much on projection of the internet penetration rate. The focus of this research work however, was to carry out an evaluation of the degree of user satisfaction in Internet cafes, what are their problem areas if any and the policy recommendations for service improvement. In accomplishing the set objective, the researcher employed the survey method to gather data from the users. 12 sets of structured questions were arranged in a questionnaire and shared in 6 internet cafes under randomly selected local townships with in and around Kampala city. The total number of copies of questionnaire shared was 180, out of which 160 (88.8%) was retrieved. The Data were analyzed using descriptive statistics and simple regression. The findings show that there is a high degree of association between professionalism, responsiveness and user satisfaction in the internet cafes. From the result, about 48.1% of the users never had formal internet literacy training. The study results also revealed that the low internet bandwidth and frequent load shedding are the most deficiencies to internet café users. The researcher therefore recommended that e-Business organizations embrace professional business ethics and upgrade internet band width in a bid to remain competitive in the sector. A public-private partnership should increase efforts towards addressing the urgent energy needs and making computer literacy a public campaign at all levels of education and business organizations so as to aid people to be skillful in the use of the Internet.

Cloud computing plays a key role in the development of IT and Internet history. Because of it, enterprises were able to improve operational efficiency and enhance resource sharing, and people's lifestyle change to become dependent on the network (shopping, online games or communities). This study provides the individual point of view of the general Internet users (non-enterprise organizations, the manager), and joined the "internet involvement" so that the users lifestyle concept for the external variables, different object with the point of view again to verify that the technology acceptance model (TAM) and Wu (2011) about SaaS. The study aimed to take advantage of the Technology Acceptance Model (TAM) combined with the Innovation-Decision Process (Rogers ,1995), to investigate the "perceived usefulness" and "perceived ease of use" of which external variables will affect the Internet users of cloud services (SaaS); then compare the perceived usefulness and perceived ease of use, the two impact on the use of behavioral intentions. Using multiple regression analysis, the the results showed that, the commercial communication tool, "marketing efforts", impacts of cloud service users’ "perceived usefulness" maximum. In characteristics of the decision-making unit, "Attitude to innovation and technology" is the greatest impact on the "perceived ease of use" of cloud services. Impact on behavioral intentions, the influence of "perceived ease of use" rather than "perceived usefulness", can be seen in terms of network applications, perceived ease of use plays a very important role. Finally, the following recommendations, hoping to enhance the cloud services users’ behavioral intention. 1.We can make use of an external communication tool, the marketing efforts, for the "perceived usefulness" to create the image of product's appeal, value, easy to obtain. The inner characteristics of the decision-making unit for "perceived ease of use" can profile people who hold a positive attitude to innovation and technology, and heavy internet involvement. Thus accurate contact with the target populations. 2.Cognitive stage of an efficient method is to let internet users think the cloud service "friendly interface, easy to learn and use, not time-consuming effort" to enhance their behavioral intentions and the actual possibilities for action.

Although Smartphones have become very popular in recent years, the factors influencing users' attitude toward the operation systems of Smartphones are still vague. In addition, whether the Smartphone usage can increase users' intention to use mobile Internet services is not clear either. Therefore, this study proposed a research model based on customer value theory to explore the factors. In this research, 80 students were invited to use a Smartphone and fill out a questionnaire. PLS software is used to analyze the data. The results show that perceived content, perceived context and perceived infrastructure significantly affect users' attitude toward the operation systems of the Smartphone. The attitude indirectly influences the willingness to pay for mobile internet service through the intention to use mobile services. Additionally, both quality/performance and price/value for money have direct effect on the willingness to pay for mobile internet service. Finally, the discussions and implications of the study are provided.

Advances in technology have sprung up many network streaming media platforms. As this type of services flourish and slowly becoming the mainstream media sharing solution, these services also cross the boundary of internet and starting to offer their services on entertainment client devices such as smart phone, tablet, internet TV, and Set-top box. The subject of this study is Channelized Video Streaming Services (CVSS). Unlike Video on Demand (VOD), VOD allows customers to enjoy service provider’s media contents on any of these devices anywhere anytime. But this study is a kind of service integrates similar media contents from the Internet into a single channel and create channels tailor to specific interest. These channels are then repeatedly broadcast, similar to the way traditional cable television works, to customers as if they are watching cable television rather than Internet media. This study uses a quantitative approach based on Decomposed Theory of Planned Behavior (DTPB), and conducts an online survey with the general public. The goal of this study is to assess the feasibility of CVSS and allow cable companies to evaluate whether adding CVSS to their existing services will create enough values to help retain their existing customers or attract new customers.

Though the 3G market is full of uncertainty, 3G service was just introduced into Taiwan recently. The whole telecom service providers devote to increase the number of customers using its 3G service. But according to the previous study, Kolter(1994)clearly points out that the cost to attract new consumers is much higher then keeps incumbent consumers, even five times higher. This research focuses on this uncertain 3G market. Try to exam possible variables that may affect willingness of customers to use the 3G service in the same telecom service provider. The independent variables as following are discussed: Network Externality, Switching Cost, Customer Satisfaction, Customer Loyalty and Technical Functional Factors. Based on the results of this research, Customer Loyalty and Switching Cost of Time and Special Offering are two main factors which significantly positively related to Customer Repatronage.
