Abstract:
Service-based learning (Service-learning) is learning based on serving. The purpose of service-learning is to direct santri practically. Thus it can create santri to be a responsible and caring person. Pondok Pesantren (Islamic Boarding School) Darussalam Sumbersari Kediri and Al Urwatul Wutsqo Jombang are the Islamic educational institutions that have a practice-based learning orientation. These two Islamic boarding schools are the large ones in Jombang based on thoriqoh and the largest in Kediri, significantly Pare based on salaf. This research aims to reveal the implication of service-learning towards santri’s social care building on Pondok Pesantren (Islamic Boarding School) Darussalam Sumbersari Kediri and Pondok Pesantren Al Urwatul Wutsqo Jombang. This research use a qualitative approach with a multisite study design. Data collection is carried out using in-depth interviews, participant observation, and documentation. Data analysis techniques include data collection, data condensation, data presentation, and concluding. Researchers check the validity of research’s finding by extension of participation, triangulation technique of sources, theories, methods, and persistence of observation. This research shows that service-learning impact on caring character building of santri is experiencing very positive changes. The research finding proves it. Santri who has participated in service-learning has experienced change mainly in terms of caring for others. This form of caring can be seen from several indicators, for example they have compassion when their friend is sick. Thus, they take care of that friend, the emergence a sense of brotherhood, protect their friends from bullying others, and they are more sensitive to what is going on around them, they help without having to ask, their respect for the teacher increase.

Abstract:
AbstractProfessional caring is the essence of nursing practice. Reflection on personal assumptions and beliefs challenge stereotypic views that influence professional caring and nursing care. An innovative educational pedagogy known as service learning creates an opportunity for students to reflect on self in the context of service to others; it is through this pedagogy that personal assumptions and beliefs are challenged as students become registered nurses.A qualitative descriptive study engaged undergraduate first and second year nursing students through interviews and reflections. The purposes of this study were to describe students’ perception of self and caring in service learning, any changes in the perceptions of self over time, and the connection of self to others. Results identified three major themes: understanding self, becoming a nurse and learning to care with increasing depth over the two years. Implications for nursing curriculum and further research are discussed.

Abstract:
A tranquility room in the nursing environment can serve as a self-reflective sanctuary. Self-reflection is essential to gain a true sense of authenticity and service to others (Pipe & Bortz, 2009). Telemetry nurses participated in a qualitative research study based on grounded theory and the theory of human caring. Caring perspective themes relating to the wellness of the mind, body, and spirit were identified. Fostering a supportive patient-centered environment the tranquility room facilitated a presence of self. Nurses are able to nurture and relate caring in their relationships with colleagues and patients when provided with the opportunity for self-care and reflection.

Abstract:
The victim impact statement (VIS) is a written account of harms experienced as a result of crime. This study investigates VIS use by sexually assaulted women through interviews with Canadian victims, victim services workers, and feminist advocates (N = 35). Findings suggest that victims use the VIS to express relational caring. Relational caring is an ethic of care that prioritizes others through privileging the harms experienced by others because of witnessing the sexual assault or coping with the victim’s postassault sequelae, protecting future or hypothetical victims, and promoting the interests of intimate partner offenders. Relational caring challenges traditional conceptions of victim agency and VIS use for instrumental purposes, as well as the targets and temporalities of sexual assault harms that are detailed in the statement. Relational caring has unique implications for victims who are mothers, especially those abused as minors, and for intimate partners. Legal, therapeutic, and social service consequences are discussed.

Abstract:
AbstractThis article offers a perspective from early childhood care and education in Aotearoa New Zealand. It draws from the data of four recent studies to demonstrate pedagogical practices informed by Indigenous (Māori) perspectives. Māori values, such as manaakitanga (caring, hospitality, generosity) and whanaungatanga (relatedness), are shown featuring in routines focused on provision of food and serving as a key focus of early childhood education for sustainability. It is argued that providing opportunities for children to become engaged with growing, cooking and sharing food enables them to operationalise compassion towards themselves, others and the environment, reconnecting with the source of their food and demonstrating generosity and care to others (both human and more-than-human) in their communities. This can be viewed as a pedagogical response to the increasing encroachment of neoliberalism, with its incumbent individualism and lack of collectivist consciousness or concern for the environment, into education settings. Furthermore, drawing upon Indigenous perspectives honours traditional, localised wisdom regarding sustainability practices.

Caring is an attention and action towards others (patients) to provide assistance, support, respect and empathy in providing physical care to avoid a unexpected condition supported by sources of knowledge, patience, and hope. Nurse caring behaviour will be very important in influencing service quality and client satisfaction. The purpose of this study was to analyze nurse caring behaviour in increasing the satisfaction of inpatients at the Puskesmas Wotu. The design of this study is a correlative study. The population were 87 respondents with a purposive sampling technique in which all population amounts were used as research samples. The results of a statistical study using the spearmen test, it was found that r value=0.529. That is, the level of strength of the relationship between strong variables. The relationship between these two variables is unidirectional, thus it can be interpreted that the quality of caring care increases the satisfaction of inpatients will also increase. Furthermore, there is a significant relationship between Nurse behavior variables with the Patients Satisfaction (Sig.=0,000). Nurse caring behavior needs to be increased again with training and making standard guidelines.

Abstract:
Patient family satisfaction is the most important thing so that the hospital can develop. This can be created if medical personnel are able to provide good service. One indicator to support optimal service is to manage caring of appropriate human resources. Therefore, the purpose of this study was to determine the effect between caring human resources and family satisfaction of patients in Muhammadiyah University Hospital Malang. The study design used cross sectional. The sample of this study amounted to 110. This study used a random sampling stratification technique with research instruments using a questionnaire. In addition, the data analysis technique uses simple linear regression. Based on the data collection results obtained 108 respondents (98.2%) gave a good assessment of caring human resources, 2 respondents (1.8%) gave sufficient ratings, 79 respondents (71.8%) felt very satisfied, and 31 respondents (28.2%) were satisfied with the service at the hospital. Besides that simple linear test results show Sig. amounting to 0,000 (Sig. <0.05), which means that there is an influence of patient family satisfaction in poly psychiatry in terms of caring human resources as much as caring human resources affect the patient's family satisfaction by 15.7% (β = 0.157), and 84% others can be influenced or explained by other variables not included in this study. Based on these results it can be concluded that the management of good and appropriate caring of human resources will produce quality services that have a positive impact on the hospital by increasing patient family satisfaction and increasing number of visits because the hospital is considered appropriate and considered good in providing services

Abstract:
The wounded healer archetype predicts that people who suffer negative experiences in childhood would be motivated to enter helping fields as a way of self-healing. Developmental traumatology, however, suggests that people who have negative experiences in childhood may have their development stunted, particularly when it comes to caring for others. To test these competing theories, researchers test the effect of adverse childhood experiences (ACEs) on public service motivation (PSM) and find negative experiences in childhood are associated with a lower willingness to help others. However, some evidence suggests that a curvilinear relationship exists such that extreme levels of ACEs result in more PSM.

Abstract:
This qualitative study of representative bureaucracy examines the extension and limitations of liberal democratic rights by connecting environmental and social history with policy, individual decision making, gender, race, and class in American history. It documents major cultural shifts in a homogeneous patriarchal organization, constraints, advancement, and the historical agency of women and minorities. "Creating a Multicultural Forest Service" identifies a relationship between natural and human resources and tells a story of expanding and contracting civil liberties that shifted over time from women and people of color to include the differently-abled and LGBT communities. It includes oral history as a key to uncovering individual decision points, relational networks, organizational activism, and human/nature relations to shape meaningful explanations of historical institutional change. With gender and race as primary categories, this inquiry forms a history that is critical to understanding federal bureaucratic efforts to meet workforce diversity goals in natural resource organizations.

Abstract:
The purpose of this study was to describe the meaning of caring from the perspective of community-dwelling individuals 65 years and older, who claim a Polish American ethnic identity. As background and preparation for the study the researcher spent 2 years in the Polish American community from which the key informants were chosen, explored the concept of caring cross culturally in the Human Relations Area Files, and spent a summer in Poland--the country of origin for the second generation sample. These experiences revealed that the care expectations by one group of people who are elderly and identify themselves as Polish American are unknown. Interviews were used to collect data from 7 informants. Participation, observation and written resources within the ethnic community supplemented the interview process. Tape recorded interviews were transcribed; field notes were compiled. All written data were analyzed, organized into categories and validated by the informants. Ten categories represented the Polish American elder's view of caring: kinds of Polish symbols, kinds of greeting, kinds of acknowledgment, kinds of caring, places for Polish people to meet, reasons for joining the Arizona Polish Club, reasons for going to the Arizona Polish Club, reasons for giving acknowledgment, care expectations: characteristics of a caring nurse, and ways to express caring. A primitive view of a 3-staged model was developed for generating universal conceptualizations of care from the Polish American elder's view of caring. Relationships among the categories were inferred from the data by the researcher and discussed as themes. Themes included: Arizona Polish Club as a caring place, being with my own kind, togetherness, neighboring, get moving in the morning, being there, taking time out, and having heart. The themes were discussed in relation to the research questions and the concept of caring that guided the study. This study revealed some of the characteristics, attributes, and conditions of caring that will be useful in expanding nursing's definition of caring, devising psychometric instruments to measure caring, and developing a cross cultural, cross age taxonomy of caring. Recommendations for nursing included care and research strategies with elders and suggestions for future study.

Abstract:
Background: Electronic Word of Mouth (eWOM) is something that lately has gained increasing relevance and importance when it comes to consumers purchase decisions. Online reviews are considered to be the most important and reliable form of eWOM and it refers to when consumers communicate with other consumers online regarding their previous shopping experiences. In order to increase the generalizability and understanding of motives that influence consumers intention to write online reviews, authors of previous studies have suggested that future research should intend to focus on motives that influence intention to write online reviews in other contexts that are not aimed towards the service industry. Purpose: The purpose of this study is to explain how personal- and social motives influence consumers intention to write online product reviews. Methodology: For this explanatory study, a quantitative strategy with a cross-sectional research design were used in order to test the model founded on two major hypotheses. The data was gathered through a self-completed questionnaire with a sample of 222 respondents. Findings: In this study, two major hypotheses were conducted in order to explain how personal motives and social motives influence consumers intention to write online product reviews. After analysing the data that emerged from the survey, a conclusion can be drawn that the hypothesis concerning personal motives and its influence on consumers intention to write online product reviews was accepted whereas the hypothesis concerning social motives was rejected. Conclusion: In this study, it has been recommended that future studies should test the suggestions found in this study with a more diverse sample in order to increase the generalizability of the theoretical implications. Furthermore, directions for future research will also recommend testing the modified model that emerged in this paper in order to detect if there are any additions that need to be added to increase the predictability of the findings.

Abstract:

Abstract:
This thesis explored gay male carers’ experience of caring for their partner, brother or friend who had HIV/AIDS. Through using phenomenological methodology (van Manen, 1990), the day-to-day caring experiences were uncovered. The data gathered were then analysed through a nursing ‘lens’, with the concept of stigma as an anchoring point. The dual stigmas of homophobia and AIDS phobia impacted on the daily lives of these men as they cared for their loved one. The research identified six themes. These were: 1) the relationship; 2) coping with HIV and AIDS; 3) the corporal impact of HIV/AIDS; 4) experiences of carers including the absence of others; 5) living daily with the virus: Demands of people living with HIV/AIDS (PLWHA); and 6) saying goodbye, but wanting to keep the memory alive. The caring these men undertook, for which they were frequently unprepared, was intensive and complex, but because of their commitment and love they battled on. Because of a sense of shame associated with AIDS phobia on the part of the PLWHA, the carer often had to undertake this care in isolation, without support from family, friends or home health care agencies. The carers struggled with not only the demands of day-to-day care, but also with non-acceptance from family, both of the nature of the relationship with their partner and of their homosexuality. Family members were forced, often with great difficulty, to acknowledge the close commitment the men had to each other. Recognition that one had a terminal disease, HIV/AIDS was also required. The fear of potential transmission was high among carers, friends and family members. Notably, there was an absence of blame on the part of the carer towards his partner for contracting HIV/AIDS. The physical decline and marking of the body further stigmatised the PLWHA, which added to carers’ burdens. They endeavoured to minimise the physical decline in their partner, so he could continue to pass as healthy, and attempted to make the day-to-day living as normal as possible. The methods of combating weight loss and opportunistic infections meant frequent medical appointments, complex intensive medical procedures and help with personal care, which was undertaken at home largely without support from health care staff. Carers frequently struggled also with their partner’s denial of being ill. One strategy all carers used was to escape with their partners from their everyday life in Melbourne and attempt metaphorically to leave the HIV/AIDS behind; this was a time when they could rekindle their life together as it was before HIV/AIDS came into their lives. Some carers chose to holiday without their partner, to give themselves a break from the day-to-day caring, while others planned and took holidays with their partner. The decline of the health in the PLWHA meant that family members had to recognise and accept both the nature of the relationship and the presence of the disease. This recognition and acceptance often came only when the partner was very ill, even at the point of dying. Carers and their partners discussed the potential use of euthanasia, as a means of ending the final phase of life with some dignity. One carer and his partner used euthanasia, despite its illegal status. The main concern for all carers was providing comfort and a reduction in the pain associated with HIV/AIDS for the partner. The widespread grief associated with HIV/AIDS was evident amongst these carers. All had known other gay men who had died, some carers own partner had died, or was about to die. There was an overwhelming sense of grief, which at times was repressed as a means of coping day-to-day. All carers felt it was important and necessary to remember those lost to HIV/AIDS through the various public memorials, as they did not want their partner to be just another faceless person lost to this disease. This phenomenological study of carers’ experience highlights the need for health care workers to be aware of the differing strategies that gay men use to cope with HIV/AIDS. While it may seem that the carers are coping with care of their partner, the outer façade is not always an accurate portrayal of the true situation. Health care workers should enquire as to the assistance these carers need from health care services in order to continue to care for their loved one. Such assistance can be the simple recognition of the partner and acceptance of them as part of the PLWHA’s network; this inclusion and acceptance is half the battle.

Abstract:
The aim of this study was to highlight the different personality traits and the motives of wanting to become a nurse with a focus on co-dependency. Due to that people with a problematic childhood tend to choose the nursing profession in which the need to care for others can be satisfied. The used method is a literature review consisting of 10 qualitative studies from the years 2008 to 2016. The results were identified by four themes: The desire to help others, the influence from others, various personality traits, practical reasons and previous experience. Conclusions; the study answered the aim of why one chooses to become a nurse and what can influence the choice. Whether the different personality traits influenced the choice was answered to some limitation. The authors believe that the study allows an insight into the factors that influence an individual's motives for choosing the profession, this may provide healthcare professionals and patients a better condition to meet in a good care relationship. The findings are weighted with the concepts caring and co-dependency, which has permeated the work. Suggestions for future research is to investigate further about the personality traits of those who choose to become a nurse and if the profession is suitable for all personalities.

Doctoral thesis, Linköpings universitet, Avdelningen för omvårdnad, 2017. http://urn.kb.se/resolve?urn=urn:nbn:se:liu:diva-133182.

Full text
Abstract:
Introduction: As medical treatment has improved, patients with heart failure (HF) now live longer and care mostly takes place at home with partners providing the main assistance. Taking care of an ill or disabled individual imposes a well-documented burden on the partner’s healthrelated quality of life. The awareness of partners’ burdensome situation is increasing, but few interventions have targeted the needs of patientpartner dyads with HF. The results have been inconclusive and give no clear guidance on how interventional programmes should be designed to improve both patient and partner outcomes. Aim: The overall aim of this thesis was to evaluate the effects of a psychoeducational intervention delivered to patient-partner dyads with HF during long-term follow-up, and to explore the dyads’ perceived caring needs. Methods: The thesis is based on four papers that used both quantitative and qualitative data. Study I and II used a randomized controlled design with a follow-up assessment after 24 months including 155 patientpartner dyads. The control group received care as usual. The intervention group received care as usual, and in addition they participated in the nurse-led psycho-educational intervention. Data was collected using questionnaires before and 24 months after the intervention, in order to determine the long-term effects on patients and partners regarding health related quality of life, perceived control, symptoms of depression and partners’ caregiver burden (I, II). A conceptual health promotion model inspired the intervention. To describe how the model was applied, a qualitative approach analysing nurses’ documentation of the sessions with 71 dyads in the intervention group (III) was used. Study IV has an explorative design. To further explore the dyads’ perceived caring needs, focus groups interviews with 19 patient-partner dyads with heart failure (IV) were performed. Results: The intervention did not have any significant effect on physical or mental health- related quality of life, depressive symptoms, or perceived control over the heart failure among the dyads (I) or caregiver burden in the partners (II) after 24 months. Furthermore, time to first event did not differ significantly between the dyads in the intervention group and the control group (I, II). As for the partners, both the intervention and control group reported decreased physical health between the baseline assessment and the 24-month follow-up (I). The intervention was composed of three components; 1) cognitive 2) supportive, and 3) behavioural component. The analysis of the nurses’ documentation confirmed the coverage of all the components and the analysis revealed a vide range of caring needs among the dyads (III). The dyads described a need to learn about HF to be able to manage everyday life. Regular outpatient clinic visits and access to telephone support were vital and both the patient and the partner need to be present at the clinic visits. Meeting others who are in the same situation and sharing the burden in nurse-led group sessions was proposed as an opportunity to support each other and others (IV). Conclusions: Over the 24-month follow-up period, the intervention had a neutral effect on health- related quality of life, depressive symptoms and perceived control over the HF among the dyads, and on partners’ caregiver burden. Considering the fact that partners serve as a critical extension of the formal healthcare system, and that both patients and partners ask for more support, it will become crucial to find new ways to support dyads affected by heart failure. This thesis may be viewed as a first step in trying to understand dyads’ perceived caring needs, and it can serve as a guide in clinical work and when designing new dyadic interventions.

Ting, Yang, Li Guang Sheng, Li Zeng Fen, Peng Yue, and Hu Jian. "Study on Effects of Environment Conditions on Essential Service Water System of Nuclear Power Station." In 2017 25th International Conference on Nuclear Engineering. American Society of Mechanical Engineers, 2017. http://dx.doi.org/10.1115/icone25-66189.

Full text
Abstract:
For nuclear power stations, the main function of Essential Service Water System (ESWS) is to discharge the waste heat from reactor core and spent fuel pool to the environment controllably, which is directly related to the safety and economy of nuclear power stations. Usually ESWS use open water from sea, rivers, lakes, reservoirs, as heat transfer medium. Extremely harsh environmental conditions may disable system functions and even lead to ESWS failure, directly reduce the safety and economy of nuclear power stations, and cause serious nuclear accidents. Failure of ESWS is one of the main reasons that lead to the Fukushima nuclear accident because of the loss of electricity after the earthquake and tsunami. Based on the typical ESWS configuration and conditions of serving nuclear power stations in China, the influence of environmental conditions on the function of water system is studied, and the corresponding measures are analyzed. These conditions can be divided into three categories: temperatures, water levels, and physical and chemical characteristics. Temperatures affect cooling characteristic of ESWS mainly. Nuclear power stations in tropical areas need to focus on cooling capacity might be reduced by high temperature. Those in cold region need attention to excessive cooling and freezing problems caused by low temperature. The influence of water levels is mainly fluid transport capacity and selection of equipment to ESWS. When the range of natural water level is too wide, designers shall consider measures to narrow it, such as the construction of highly reliable reservoir. Inland nuclear power stations shall try to ensure the reliability of ESWS; prevent water level changes beyond the scope of design caused by drought and flood disasters. The effects of physical and chemical properties are derived from the open water characteristics, including high salinity, high chloride ion concentration, carrying solid particles, suspended solids, and aquatics, and so on. These characteristics will cause the equipment and pipeline eroded or even damaged, aqueducts of intake and output jammed, heat exchangers of the final heat sink weakened and other negative effects, resulting in ESWS performance decline. Some of these factors are the characteristics of station site natural environment, some others are changes caused by human activities. Some factors are sustained, long-term; some others may be sudden, temporary. Influence on these factors need to be taken measures from many aspects, including structure, biological disinfection, special materials and equipment, environmental protection measures around the nuclear power station, and so on. On the whole, the environmental factors that affect ESWS in the nuclear power stations are wide, and the influence mechanism is more complex. These factors ultimately act on ESWS, but most of them cannot be banished inside of ESWS or the final heat sink system. Against the negative effects from environmental conditions, it has to be considered from all steps in the engineering of nuclear power stations, including design, construction and operation. All the measures shall be suitable to local conditions, in order to ensure the safety and economy of nuclear power stations.

Abstract:
An optimal air distribution design accomplishes both comfort and ventilation requirements while consuming as little energy as possible. This paper analyzes four different air distribution systems and technologies including single duct variable air volume air handlers, chilled beam cooling systems, total energy recovery wheels, displacement ventilation, and dedicated outside air systems; in an effort to determine the best air distribution system for a representative section of a school in hot and humid climate. The effectiveness of the air distribution systems is evaluated by analyzing how the different technologies take advantage of the natural convective properties of air to create a comfortable environment for the occupied region of the space. Distribution effectiveness and energy consumption must be weighed against considerations such as system complexity and ease of operation. This paper compares several alternative air distribution systems to a baseline single inlet VAV system that is commonly used in new schools designed today. Calculations show that the total energy recovery wheels result in a 16% energy savings over the baseline air distribution system because of the large amount of outside air required in school buildings. Chilled beams are not well suited for schools because of the large amount of outside air required by the space and the sophisticated design and operation needed to prevent condensation from occurring at the chilled beam. The results show that the air distribution system that consumes the least amount of energy is a displacement ventilation system. The system also inherently promotes better indoor air quality as it allows air to naturally rise out and return out of the space with minimal mixing of contaminates that may be recirculated within the room for others to breath. The displacement ventilation system’s overall energy savings of 20% over the baseline is mainly attributed to its total energy recovery wheel and the system’s ability to drastically reduce the cooling load seen by the air cooled chiller by effectively ventilating spaces using less outside air.

Full text
Abstract:
Boilers and pressure vessels are heavily used in chemical industrial plants and equipment is inspected periodically for damage. The most common type of damage is wall thinning due to Flow-Accelerated Corrosion (FAC) or corrosion under insulation (CUI). Any damage must be repaired or replaced as necessary. On the other hand, optimization of the time required in order to replace damaged equipment by evaluating the load carrying capacity of pipes with wall thinning is expected in chemical industrial field. In the present study, FE analysis is used in order to evaluate the load carrying capacity in pipes with wall thinning. Burst pressure is a measure of the load carrying capacity in pipes with wall thinning. The pipes subjected to burst testing are carbon steel tubes for pressure service STPG370 (JIS G3454). The examined wall thinning is rectangular, and the eroded depth is half the pipe wall thickness. The burst pressure is investigated by comparing the results of burst testing with the results of FE analysis. Moreover, the reduced maximum allowable working pressure (MAWPr), which is calculated by fitness-for-service (FFS) assessment, and the safety margin for burst pressure are investigated. The burst pressure calculated by FEA agrees well with the test results, except for square wall thinning for circumferential angles of less than 15°. Also, the safety margin of MAWPr based on FFS-1 Part 4 is over 4.0 times for burst pressure.

Abstract:
Production methods transform social structures, including the economy. In the societies that are shaped by old production methods, the existence of those people who earn their living working through these methods will be destroyed altogether and their lives will be harder than they used to be, which will lead to conflicts. It is true that changes make transformations inevitable Labor in the agriculture society was a very important production factor. In the industrial society, on the other hand, workers will serve their labor for the needs of people with a huge capital rather than serving their own ends, which make union action all the same very important. It is true that the potential role of labor as a vital component of the production has been weakened in the industrial societies. The reason for this is that there are now millions of people who can easily replace others in industrial societies. For this reason, the laborers who have faced huge challenges against the capital in this framework started to initiate union action in order to protect their rights. The function or the roles of union actions to have appeared in the industrial societies have changed when faced with information society in the 21.century. Information society forced unions towards change in union actions. Today, there is need for unionists to agree on a new road map in the 21.century for union organizations and activities.

Full text
Abstract:
Ligament cracks were discovered during a cold survey in a main steam outlet header in a 250MW coal/gas fired unit following over 100,000 hours of service. Subsequent inspection revealed similar cracking in the same headers of two other units in the plant which had seen similar service. To ensure the safety of the headers a structural integrity programme was initiated by the operator, Genesis Energy, in order to determine their fitness for service. The maximum stress and stress range due to the temperature and pressure fluctuations during operation and starts was established by carrying out a detailed thermo-mechanical FE analysis, validated against detailed thermocouple measurements. The critical crack size was calculated and the time for the flaw to reach the critical flaw size was established by considering creep and fatigue crack growth mechanisms. Mechanical testing on material obtained during a repair of one of the headers was used to refine estimates of toughness and tensile properties. Moreover examination of the fracture face removed during the repair indicated that the crack growth was primarily due to fatigue. This was found to be due to frequent thermal cycling of the unit during nominally “steady state” operation. The crack growth rate established from the fracture surface analysis was compared with NDT measurements for validation of the fatigue crack growth model. The demonstrated predictability for the rate at which the ligament cracks are growing as a function of operation has provided Genesis with the opportunity develop a long term strategy for inspection, repair or replacement of their superheater headers.

"Development of Pipeline Sleeve End Fillet Weld Stress Intensity Factor and Reference Stress Solutions for Fatigue and Failure Assessment." In 2016 11th International Pipeline Conference. American Society of Mechanical Engineers, 2016. http://dx.doi.org/10.1115/ipc2016-64491.

Full text
Abstract:
Pipeline defects such as cracks, dents and corrosion often require permanent pressure retaining repairs. Full encirclement metallic repair sleeves with fillet-welded end connections to the pipeline are often used for this purpose. In-service failures have occurred at pressure retaining sleeves as a result of defects associated with the sleeve welds, such as hydrogen-induced cracks, undercut at the fillet welds and inadequate weld size. At present, accurate quantitative fitness for service assessments for circumferential defects in a sleeve fillet welds are difficult to carry out due to a lack of detailed stress intensity factor (SIF) solutions for finite length cracks. The primary objective of the project presented in this paper [1] was to develop flaw acceptance criteria which will fill gaps in the available Engineering Critical Assessment procedures for metallic sleeve repairs on all grades of pipelines. SIF solutions for finite length sleeve-end fillet weld toe and root cracks were generated and used to develop parametric equations suitable for carrying out defect assessments. These equations can be used in the assessment of fatigue crack growth and/or fracture using failure assessment diagram (FAD) methods at sleeve end fillets alongside the results developed for other structural geometries in national standards. The equations were developed based on detailed finite element (FE) analyses of a wide range of sleeve end fillet weld cracking scenarios to estimate the SIFs at both the deepest point and the surface breaking point along the crack front.

In ASME 1996 International Gas Turbine and Aeroengine Congress and Exhibition. American Society of Mechanical Engineers, 1996. http://dx.doi.org/10.1115/96-gt-533.

Full text
Abstract:
Currently available Ceramic Matrix Composites (CMCs) have very low stress carrying capability if they are to achieve the service life required for application in gas turbine engines. As such, they are most likely to find their first applications in non-structural components with low mechanical loads, where the majority of the stress is thermally induced. The thermal cycling experienced in gas turbine engines, coupled with the necessary interfaces with surrounding metal components and other geometric features, means that these thermal stresses are often localised, but in order to produce a valid component design they may significantly exceed the maximum design stress. The aim of this paper is to discuss the implications for the life of the component of these excess stresses. This will cover the mechanisms for the propagation of localised damage in a strain controlled environment, and the effect of this damage on the thermal conductivity and hence on the induced thermal gradients and thermal strains. Strains corresponding to stresses considerably above the normally accepted design stress can be sustained for a considerable number of cycles, but the influence of extended time periods with damage at elevated temperatures remains unexplored.

Guerrero, Hugo, and Cameron Shankland. "Integrating Airborne Datasets Into the Design and Construction Planning Phases." In 2008 7th International Pipeline Conference. ASMEDC, 2008. http://dx.doi.org/10.1115/ipc2008-64338.

Full text
Abstract:
Today, obtaining field information in traditional pipeline design workflows rely on the use of conventional aerial photography, mapping and field visits. As a Designer, Engineer or Project Manager, a field visit can answer many questions and perhaps be the key to achieving a sound, successful design and installation. While conventional aerial orthophotography and mapping is invaluable during the design, it lacks a dimension that allows you to visualize the right-of-way the way you would if you were there. The use of Airborne Video and Oblique Imagery is not intended to replace conventional aerial orthophotography or mapping, but augment its use by providing a rich visualization that, in conjunction with the planimetric data sets, can aid the project team immensely during the design and permitting phase of a project. Currently, there are Airborne Data services available serving the pipeline industry that contain custom tools that either integrate into GIS platforms or operate as stand-alone proprietary software. These tools aid designers, engineers and constructors navigate through the video without having to sit and watch the whole video. In addition, video can be geocoded to specific pipeline or right-of-way features, such as a valve sites or stream crossings. Some tools even allow you to take rough measurements from visible features like fences or roads. Having such a dataset enables project team members to revisit any location along the right-of-way as many times as required to get information to finalize a design, permit application or to estimate the cost of construction. As Project Managers, we regularly face having new team members join the project at all stages of the project. Having a video to hand to new team members reduces the time they will take to get on board and familiarize themselves with the right-of-way. It also reduces the amount of field trips required just for this purpose. Another great use of Airborne Datasets is to use it during a pre-bid conference and provide it to the contractors bidding on the job. On large pipeline projects, it is unfeasible and impractical to have the project management team tour the entire right-of-way during a job walk, and there is likely areas along the right-of-way that are not very accessible thus requiring a flyover to review it with others.

Full text
Abstract:
Local Approach methods provide alternative routes for carrying out fracture mechanics assessments. These methods use a finite element analysis of the cracked component that incorporates a micro-mechanical model of material behaviour in the region of the crack tip. The development of damage, and eventual failure of the material for particular loading conditions, is calculated directly by the micro-mechanical model. A potential advantage of such models is that they can automatically incorporate the effects of loss of constraint and load history. This paper describes studies that compare the predictions of the Gurson-Tvergaard-Needleman (GTN) local approach model of ductile fracture with traditional fracture mechanics parameters. The model is used to consider the effect of load history on ductile fracture initiation in a typical fracture mechanics Compact Tension (CT) specimen. The aim is to investigate the benefits of applying such models to situations where events in the plant loading history can have a significant effect on crack driving force for typical defects that subsequently develop during service. It is anticipated that the results will be used to make improvements to the accuracy of the traditional assessment procedures. The results show that in certain circumstances, for instance where residual stresses are present in the vicinity of a defect, load excursions on the specimen can have a beneficial effect on global load carrying capacity and that load history effects can be captured by adopting the local approach for the assessment of ductile fracture. It is also noted that the trends observed in other local parameters, e.g. J and CTOD, must be treated with caution, probably due to near crack-tip softening associated with the implementation of the GTN model in a region of high stress concentration.
