Abstract:
The textbook is devoted to the issues of understanding the laws in the evolution of human consciousness and the formation of a pyramid of human values. For this purpose, the study analyzes the periodization of spatial structures and attempts to reproduce the logic of the process of consciousness development. The place of man in the system of cosmic evolution, the understanding of the process of transition from passive and unconscious human participation in evolution to active and conscious are comprehended. Brief information about the principles of the formation of the structure of space and the organization of systems of populated places is presented. Meets the requirements of the federal state educational standards of higher education of the latest generation. It is intended for students of all forms of education of educational institutions of secondary vocational and higher education in the field of training "Architecture" , as well as for all those interested in the problems of territorial development.

Abstract:
Val Dufeu here reconstructs settlement patterns of fishing communities in Viking Age Iceland and proposes socio-economic and environmental models relevant to any study of the Vikings or the North Atlantic. She integrates written sources, geoarchaeological data, and zooarchaeological data to examine how fishing propelled political change in the North Atlantic. The evolution of survival fishing to internal fish markets to overseas fish trade mirrors wider social changes in the Vikings’ world.

Abstract:
The volume comprises the proceedings of the study days in the Faculty of Architecture (29-30 April 2004) broken down into four thematic sections: The original characteristics of the Florentine school, From Higher School to Faculty, the Florentine school and the contributions from outside, Contemporary metamorphoses. The contributions focus the phases of formation and evolution of the Higher School (1926) and later Faculty (1936) of Architecture, underlining the most significant passages, starting from the initial consolidation of the didactic structure and the emergence of a "Florentine school" characterised by the two strands traceable to Raffaello Fanoni and Giovanni Michelucci. A parallel experience is provided by the contribution of the external teachers, in particular of the Roman school, with lively and at times conflicting approaches. The present situation, albeit with the necessary disciplinary dialectic, features a settlement of the divergences around themes of the relations between architecture, environment and landscape.

Abstract:
This chapter sets out the comparative evolution of the political settlement in Tanzania and Vietnam from the colonial period to the period of socialism and its ultimate demise. A description of the dominant political institutions and the evolution of the underlying distribution of power is traced through an historical exploration of the evolving structure of production and the important political struggles between contending groups in society. This chapter examines their comparative socialist experiences from the perspectives of the routes to power of the ruling parties, their success in consolidating power within the party, the creation of socialist economic institutions, and the attempts to redistribute economic power away from capitalists towards collective economic institutions. The crises of the 1970s and 1980s drove a significant change within the prevailing political settlement in both countries, that opened up the space for clientelism and informal processes of accumulation working within state institutions.

Abstract:
This chapter explores the long-term processes whereby settlers moving into Central Eastern Polynesia (CEP) adapted to new island environments and social landscapes. Over a thousand-year period, CEP societies instigated environmental change and subsistence intensification, in addition to developing localized styles of material culture and affecting great change in their sociopolitical complexity. In comparing the cultural sequences from three CEP archipelagoes (Society Islands, Marquesas Islands, Austral Islands), the chapter demonstrates shared patterns in demographic change and shifts in subsistence and exchange, while at the same time highlighting inter-archipelago variation in terms of pathways to emerging elite power. Trends in CEP regional variation provide broad support for models positing a relationship between the evolution of social complexity in CEP chiefdoms, and the effects of island size/age and the availability of natural resources.

Full text
Abstract:
The law on the protection of foreign investments is situated at the crossroads of international law and diplomacy in the context of a globalized economy. It is therefore not surprising that investment law has undergone fundamental changes in the last decade. The exponential growth of arbitration cases has illustrated a number of complex legal and political issues that have called into question the efficiency and legitimacy of investor State dispute settlement (ISDS). Thus, even for experts in the field it is challenging to keep track with the rapid and fundamental changes of what is often described as one of the most dynamic fields of international law. Against this background, the present volume provides an ‘Evolution, Evaluation, and Future Developments in International Investment Law’. World leading academics and practitioners shed light on the most important developments such as the evolution of investment law and its relationship to general international law, the practical importance of State contracts, the role of investment protection in the age of climate change, and current reform projects under the auspices of ICSID and UNCITRAL. The volume is based on six keynote speeches held at the 10 Year Anniversary Conference of the International Investment Law Centre Cologne.

Abstract:
A commonality among oceanic life cycles is a process known as settlement, where dispersing propagules transition to the sea floor. For many marine invertebrates, this transition is irreversible, and therefore involves a crucial decision-making process through which larvae evaluate their juvenile habitat-to-be. In this chapter, we consider aspects of the external environment that could influence successful settlement. Specifically, we discuss water flow across scales, and how larvae can engage behaviors to influence where ocean currents take them, and enhance the likelihood of their being carried toward suitable settlement locations. Next, we consider what senses larvae utilize to evaluate their external environment and properly time such behavioral modifications, and settlement generally. We hypothesize that larvae integrate these various external cues in a hierarchical fashion, with differing arrangements being employed across ontogeny and among species. We conclude with a brief discussion of the future promises of larval biology, ecology, and evolution.

Full text
Abstract:
This chapter explores variations in dispute outcomes in investment treaty arbitration. Building on the literature on political institutions, the study places the theoretical importance of actor information about the rules of the game and the resources of the participants at the centre of analysis. Such information shapes the strategy of the players and their relative ability to compete successfully, establishing the basis for hypotheses about variations in dispute outcomes. Drawing on the universe of known disputes, the analysis relies on statistical models and data capable of addressing concurrently the full range of potential dispute outcomes rather than particular categories of wins and losses. States do not just win or lose treaty-based investment disputes; disputes can also be concluded by decisions to discontinue arbitral proceedings and by settlements negotiated between states and investors prior to an arbitral award. Consistent with theoretical expectation, the findings indicate that dispute outcomes vary in response to the evolution of the system of dispute settlement over time, sector of investment, and access to international legal expertise, thereby underlining the pivotal role of information flows in investment dispute settlement.

Abstract:
The International Tribunal for the Law of the Sea (ITLOS) plays a central role as a dispute settlement mechanism for the international law of the sea. This book provides a unique insight into its inner workings exploring both its limitations and its unutilized potentials. New fields such as sea-level rise and the conservation and sustainable use of marine biological diversity beyond areas of national jurisdiction play important roles in the ever-expanding scope of the law of the sea. The book charts the evolution of ITLOS and the role it continues to play in international law. It introduces the reader to the historical and legal context for the discussion of ITLOS’s place within this dispute settlement regime, as well as its relationship and interaction with the other choices of dispute settlement mechanisms. It is an invaluable resource for law students, practising lawyers, judges, government and international officials, academics, and those interested in law of the sea.

Zori, Davide Marco. The Norse in Iceland. Oxford University Press, 2016. http://dx.doi.org/10.1093/oxfordhb/9780199935413.013.7.

Full text
Abstract:
The Norse discovery and settlement of Iceland in the late ninth century AD offers a test case for the study of human impacts on previously unoccupied landscapes and the formation of new societies under challenging conditions. The Norse Viking Age settlement of the island serves as a cautionary tale about the anthropogenic destruction of fragile environments, while simultaneously providing lessons about the strategic management of marginal ecosystems and nuanced examples of societal evolution and secondary state formation. Archaeological investigation of these processes is complemented by oral traditions preserved in the Icelandic sagas. Although researchers debate the proper use of the sagas, the strength of recent research is its interdisciplinary nature, combining a suite of available tools of inquiry.

Part I Investment Treaties and the Settlement of Investment Disputes: The Framework, 1 Bilateral Investment Treaties and Investment Provisions in Preferential Trade Agreements: Recent Developments in Investment Rule-making. Oxford University Press, 2018. http://dx.doi.org/10.1093/law/9780198758082.003.0001.

Abstract:
This chapter argues that investment disputes, particularly those that have arisen in the context of the implementation of NAFTA, have influenced the refinement of the provisions of new generation international investment agreements (IIAs) as well as the inclusion of a series of procedural and substantive innovations. It addresses the main distinction between BITs and investment chapters in preferential trade agreements (PTAs), focusing on the evolution of their respective rationales. It looks at the main features of the new generation of IIAs and explains how such features respond to challenges derived from the interpretation of substantive and procedural provisions included in previous agreements. The discussion is organized under two themes: (i) moving from the original exclusive focus on investment protection towards also promoting liberalization of investment flows; and (ii) the impact of investor-state dispute settlement on investment rule-making.

Abstract:
The prehistory of Oceania begins with the occupation of New Guinea over 50,000 years ago, up to the settlement of Aotearoa/New Zealand in the last 700 years. The Oxford Handbook of Prehistoric Oceania presents this history in regional overviews and debates through 21 chapters by leading archaeologists and scholars of allied fields. Chapters present the latest findings and future research directions on the New Guinea region and archipelagos from Vanuatu, New Caledonia, Fiji, Tonga, and Samoa in the western Pacific. Micronesia, East Polynesia, Hawaii, Aotearoa/New Zealand, and Easter Island are also discussed in individual chapters. Chapters on wider disciplinary issues summarize key points of method and theory in Oceanic archaeology, including the generation of explanations, building chronologies, linguistic prehistory, coastline evolution, settlement systems, and maritime migration.

Full text
Abstract:
This chapter explores the antiquity and evolution of Subarctic maritime traditions in the Beringian North Pacific—precursors of maritime cultures that ultimately pushed north and east across the Canadian and Greenlandic Arctic. Boat-based, maritime economies and settlement show up by the Pleistocene-Holocene transition in the relatively warm Subarctic Northeast Pacific (Gulf of Alaska and Aleutians) but appear delayed by 5,000 or more years in the Northwest Pacific and Bering and Chukchi seas. Potential biases of preservation and research histories are examined and dismissed, and two environmental models are proposed to explain the delay (or disruption) of maritime settlement in the seasonally frozen Okhotsk, Bering, and Chukchi seas. Late Holocene maritime traditions intensify and converge in all regions of the Subarctic and Arctic Pacific over the past 2,000–3,000 years, forging a common ecological, economic, technological, and social orientation, where none had previously existed.
