Geothermal heat pumps represent an interesting technology that is expected to contribute significantly to the reduction of primary energy use for heating and cooling and meet the targets set by the European Union. Additional benefits of this technology are related to the integration with discontinuous energy resources, in particular wind, combining heat and power. The replacement of conventional heating systems such as boilers, with heat pump systems allows the de-localization of emissions of micropollutants from urban centers to the sites in which thermal power stations are operating.

Abstract:
The pressure variation induced by CO2 injection into deep geological formations and the resulting stress perturbation may activate pre-existing faults or cause the generation of new ones. These fractures may represent a preferential path for the escape of the injected gas, damage or even break the injection/extraction wells, give rise to microseismic phenomena and have an impact on the ground deformations. Numerical simulations by traditional finite elements (FE) cannot address this problem due to the compatibility condition which prevents relative movements between adjacent elements. In this

In Ground Source Heat Pump systems (GSHP) a continuous circulation of a fluid inside the exchangers installed in the ground transfers heat between the ground and the building’s conditioning system. The heat exchange connected to a GSHP has been shown to alter the natural thermal status of the surrounding subsoil (Banks, 2012). Often the carrier fluids are brines consisting of a mixture of water and anti-freezing solutions, which lower their working temperature in order to improve the heat extraction from the ground during the cold season. The international community has already pointed out t

Coastal aquifers, defined as the domains where fresh continental groundwater and seawater meet (Post, 2005), represent a valuable source of water supply, but they are highly vulnerable to natural and anthropogenic changes. The phenomenon of seawater intrusion (SWI), defined as the movement of salt water invading freshwater aquifers, represents the most typical hydrogeological problem for coastal aquifers. SWI is one of the primary causes of groundwater being unsuitable for drinking and irrigation. It also affects coastal environments by changing the soil chemistry, reducing fertility, and imp

The research project carried out during the PhD work aims to study the effectiveness of the OhmMapper (Geometrics Inc.) capacitive-coupled resistivity system in archaeological contexts. In order to verify the effectiveness of this resistivity-meter to identify archaeological features, we realized a systematic surveys in the Geophysical Test Site of Rovereto (TN - Italy). In particular we compared both resistance and resistivity profiles realized by OhmMapper capacitively coupled resistivity-meter and by the Terrameter SAS 1000 (ABEM) galvanic resistivity meter. The Vajont landslide is one of the largest catastrophic slope failures of the past century. About 270 million m3 of limestones, mudstones and marls slid into the Vajont Reservoir on October 9, 1963, producing a displacement wave that overtopped the dam and killed over 2000 people in the valley below. Although the landslide has been extensively studied over the past several decades, its morphologic and structural controls, mechanisms, and dynamics are not completely understood yet. The first step in carrying out the research was the implementation of a bibliographic and geographic electronic ge

Rock joint characterization is a very complex task due to the heterogeneity and spatial variability of the fracture parameters. This PhD thesis is aimed to model a discrete fracture network and assess the effects of fracture properties on fluid flow and rock mass stability. Data were collected on a quartz rock mass well exposed both on surface and underground, along a well developed network of mining tunnels. A large number of structural and geomechanical data were collected and analysed by statistical procedures. Distribution and probability density function of fracture parameters were deri

The prediction of Tunnel Boring Machine (TBM) performances and the comprehension of the relationship between the geological, mechanical and structural features of a rock mass and the machine behaviour are fundamental in order to select the most effective tunnel construction methods and to estimate the condition of excavation in terms of time and economic costs of the infrastructure.
