Dannin, Isadora (Isadora Simone Stahl). "Seven ways of reading : the House of the Seven Gables." Thesis, Massachusetts Institute of Technology, 2021. https://hdl.handle.net/1721.1/132766.

Full text
Abstract:
Thesis: M. Arch., Massachusetts Institute of Technology, Department of Architecture, February, 2021<br>Cataloged from the official pdf of thesis.<br>Includes bibliographical references (pages 159-173).<br>The House of the Seven Gables is the name given to a house in Salem, MA, constructed in 1668, that now, arguably, has seven gables. It would seem logical to assume that the book written by Nathaniel Hawthorne in 1851, titled with the same name, would be about this house. However, the timeline of these namings is backwards, and the writer strictly denied the relation, instead likening the house of the story to a "castle in the air": a haunted, fantastical construction and metaphorical container for the moments of crisis when history repeats itself. The setting for a ghost story. In other words, it shouldn't be read into as a real thing. Of course, this denial can't be taken too literally. The property on Turner Street was indeed once owned by a cousin of Hawthorne's, and his time spent playing cards with her in the parlor is well documented. As it stands, the house in Salem is a historic landmark, revered both as a figment of literary mythology, and as one of the oldest and largest intact examples of colonial architecture in the former Massachusetts Bay Colony. As such, it stands obliquely for over 350 years of American history and national identity, both in its physicality and in Hawthorne's portrayal. Through the practice of close reading, this thesis designs a set of ways of apprehending the house as a living document, which like a text, can be read to hold a multiplicity of associated social and political meanings in its constructive details, its structural syntax, its contents and their stylings, and its siting. The method is in the repetitive act of representation in order to depict the house 'for what it is' by reenacting its intimations. Seven chapters, each refocusing the lens through which the house is imaged, set out to make visible the intersecting narratives latent in its architecture. My aim is not to resolve complexities, redundancies, or the stubbornness of the present architectural articulation, rather to elucidate their sources and implications: the vestigial ghosts of an alternate set of hauntings.<br>by Isadora Dannin.<br>M. Abstract:
This project was raised by a group of students belonging to the 10th cycle of the International Business and Administration career. The knowledge acquired throughout the career has allowed us to project this business model correctly and precisely, for which we will detail what has been worked on below. In the first place, the problem was identified where our users look for alternative foods that allow them to lead a healthy life and in turn provide them with nutrients and proteins so that they can comply with their daily activities. For these reasons, we create an ideal and alternative product that can be enjoyed at any time. Thus, our target audience is young people, athletes, vegans and vegetarians from the ages of 18 to 39 belonging to the NSE A and B of Modern Lima. Under this concept was born "Seven Seeds Nuggets", 100% natural nuggets based on 7 seeds, made with premium ingredients from our country, such as quinoa, kiwicha, cañihua, oats, black maca, chia and linseed, this product follows a process artisanal, being an option of snacks to be shared with other foods. Tradition and pride in our country is what our product represents, thanks to its wide variety of inputs and ideal texture, which make it a healthy and fresh option. To achieve all the aforementioned, we have developed an analysis, where the Marketing Plan, Operations Plan, Human Resources Plan, Social Responsibility Plan and Financial Plan are executed for the correct evaluation of the company and the viability of the project.<br>Trabajo de investigación

Abstract:
Utopia has a pedigree going back to early modernity and Thomas More; it has been reshaped by contemporaneous concerns from the emergence of technologies to changing geopolitical realities. For this reason, utopia has been invested with different ideological content over centuries. There are three interrelated theses in this essay. First, that Utopia is a genre of literature that is marked by a conversation between authors; utopias broadly engage one another in a textual dialogue. Second, this genre finds its origins in the early modern period, although it has been eclipsed by dystopia since the early twentieth-‐‑century—despite a brief recovery in the seventies. Third, utopia can be renewed in novelistic form today, as I demonstrate with my novel We Are Seven, but only by engaging in a literary conversation with dystopia as well as utopia, and by learning from literary innovations such as the ustopia. To develop these claims I will provide an analysis of theoreticians to establish delimiting definitions of the genre and examine its broader history. This involves arguing that utopias are more than idealistic depictions of fictional societies, but properly categorised as attempts to depict, in narrative form, superior, counterfactual institutional solutions to the socio-political and economic problems of creating and sustaining a good society. Next I present examples of utopias throughout history, expanding on the thesis, before looking more in more depth at the writing process for We Are Seven. In doing so I aim to make an engaging and original contribution to the narrative tradition of utopia and participate in the historical conversation in a way that is relevant to our times and politics.

Omelchenko, Stas. "The seven seas." Thesis, University of Iowa, 2010. https://ir.uiowa.edu/etd/721.

Full text
Abstract:
The string quintet The Seven Seas attempts to explore the relationship between narrative and abstract perceptions. Challenging the axiom that our mind interprets all in-coming information in narrative terms, the piece attempts to determine to what extent such a condition persists when taken towards its opposite - a non narrative perception. Contrary to what the title suggests, the quintet does not depict physical bodies of water; rather, its main material employs seven pitch-classes C distributed over the range of seven octaves. Thus, the main idea of the piece is primarily linked to the element of register, examining each note as an individual entity from different timbral and spacial angles. Since the main idea of the piece consists of one note in registral disposition, the harmony plays a subordinate role in it and fulfills two functions: (I) articulating sectional divisions and (II) as a means of textural coloring. In terms of counterpoint, all material revolves around pitch class C, widening the pitch-class' territory by slightly deviating from it by half steps to create the illusion of variation. To reinforce its textural complexity, the piece heavily draws on rhythm. In terms of rhythm, the complexity was achieved by either (I) construction or deconstruction of rhythmical patterns or (II) by building polyrhythmic structures.

Carney, Peter D. "The seven deadly sins." FIU Digital Commons, 2002. http://digitalcommons.fiu.edu/etd/2049.

Full text
Abstract:
This recital was created with the intention of reconnecting fundamental elements of music that have been estranged from jazz in the last 20 years. The uses of themes, experimentation, original composition, spirituality and social criticism or social commitment have all been pushed aside in the present state of jazz. These elements of music which helped jazz and its popularity have fallen under the shadow of improvisational virtuosity in today’s jazz music. Today jazz is saturated with various personalities, opinions, and world cultures. This new spectrum of possibilities has created numerous frontiers for the future of improvisation. At the same time this new world of music without limitations, specifics, and stylistic constraints is leaving a new generation with unanswered questions about the next step in the evolution of jazz. The Seven Deadly Sins was created as a personal attempt to distill the vital essence of jazz today and present it through a thematic device to a diverse listening audience. The Seven Deadly Sins was composed through the use of singular jazz vocabulary. This limited vocabulary is a personal expression of my outlook on the essence of jazz language and the world jazz explains. Since The Seven Deadly Sins is based on a language, the use of an all-encompassing theme seemed an appropriate step in the direction of creating a greater holistic project. For this means I chose to use the seven deadly sins, a theme created from Christianity in the Middle Ages, and used by numerous writers before this piece. Today, musicians are hostile toward conservative/traditional players, experimentalists, and all types of players in between. This skepticism toward differences has grown out of a survivalist mentality in the present music environment. Jazz today is a style in anarchy. The range of expression has been stretched to include Pat Metheny, Wynton Marsalis, Anthony Braxton, and everyone in between. Musicians who survive today are required to master the fundamentals of be-bop, fusion, latin, pop, sight-reading, MIDI technology, and even classical music. As a result these conditions are creating a generation of moderates that is unable to leap in any one direction, and skeptical of attempts that aren’t well rounded. In the same way that politicians fight for the moderate voters to win an election, jazz musicians are campaigning for the moderate listening audience to stay employed. Out of this interpretation of the present music environment I created this concert as an answer to the questions of the present and future state of jazz.

Isaak, Sophia. "Seven dreams in color." Thesis, University of Iowa, 2018. https://ir.uiowa.edu/etd/6146.

Full text
Abstract:
Years ago, my mother choreographed a dance entitled "Seven Dreams in Color", a seven-act dance wherein each act relayed a memory of her childhood. These memories were colored by her individual experience and often seemed warped to her, as if having been filtered through a dream. I seek to recontextualize these dreams through my own lens as a way of honoring my mother's history and my own memories. Each work functions, through color and composition, as a separate act and embodies a non-linear memory. I utilize painting, drawing and printmaking to harness dichotomous visual elements in order to convey scenes as tumultuous as both the world around me and my own shifting moods. Abrupt changes of atmosphere are of particular interest to me. I portray this shift through the visual disruptions of cropping imagery, color or medium shifts, and scale changes. Graphic schisms take my work to an unpredictable conclusion while confounding the viewer. My work reveals my desperation and need to translate all of the conflict, battles and resolutions that I observe.

Abstract:
<p> &ldquo;Seven Original Compositions for Jazz Combo&rdquo; is a project inspired by the compositional and improvisational work of seven famous jazz trumpeters. These diverse players include Tom Harrell, Roy Hargrove, Kenny Dorham, Chet Baker, Lee Morgan, Miles Davis, and Scott Wendholt. Each musician influenced my compositions in various ways; I imitated the harmonic language of Tom Harrell and Kenny Dorham in my compositions &ldquo;Lighthouse Reverie&rdquo; and &ldquo;Bog Walking&rdquo; respectively, and the lyricism of Chet Baker in &ldquo;I Kissed You Goodbye.&rdquo; Roy Hargrove&rsquo;s approach to melody provided the main influence for my 18-bar tune &ldquo; The Shaft House,&rdquo; while Miles Davis&rsquo;s treatment of the blues form influenced &ldquo; The Dawn Approaches Like Tears.&rdquo; The elements of harp bop found in Lee Morgan&rsquo;s music inspired my piece &ldquo;Lil&rsquo;B Jr.,&rdquo; and Scott Wendholt&rsquo;s flowing, wavelike lines shaped the melody of &ldquo; The Homp Romp.&rdquo; The instrumentation for each composition includes trumpet, saxophone, piano, bass, and drums, with voice on one tune. In addition to the compositions a recording and musical analysis accompany each piece. I presented a lecture recital on June 1, 2015 in Ball State University&rsquo;s Choral Hall, at which I explained and demonstrated each trumpeter&rsquo;s influence on my music. </p>

Abstract:
The seven compositions that comprise this dissertation are represented by the following files: text file (pdf), seven video performances (mp4), and corresponding zipped files of custom software and affiliated files (various file types).<br>This Digital Portfolio Dissertation presents seven compositions including text documents that explain the synthesis techniques, data mapping and routing, visual elements, the software used, all software needed to reproduce these works, and a video recording of all seven compositions. The unifying thread in my seven works is magic. The sense of magic in a live performance is the connection between artist and audience that lies beyond the immediate understanding of any work. I use this insight to create a new world inspired by sound and visuals. I perform each of these works by combining my understanding of data-driven instruments and my experience as a classically trained musician. The combination of sound design, visual composition, and a sense of magic allows me to realize these seven works. My goal is to contribute to the extensive library of electroacoustic works through my performance of my music with data-driven instruments.

Cordomí, Montoya Arnau. "Molecular dynamics simulations of seven-transmembrane receptors." Doctoral thesis, Universitat Politècnica de Catalunya, 2008. http://hdl.handle.net/10803/6464.

Full text
Abstract:
Seven transmembrane (7-TM) G protein coupled receptors (GPCR) constitute the largest family of integral membrane proteins in eukaryotes with more than 1000 members and encoding more than 2% of the human genome. These proteins play a key role in the transmission and transduction of cellular signals responding to hormones, neurotransmitters, light and other agonists, regulating basic biological processes. Their natural abundance together with their localization in the cell membrane makes them suitable targets for therapeutic intervention. Consequently, GPCR are proteins with enormous pharmacologic interest, representing the targets of about 50% of the currently marketed drugs. <br/>The current limitations in the experimental techniques necessary for microscopic studies of the membrane as well as membrane proteins emerged the use of computational methods and specifically molecular dynamics simulations. The lead motif of this thesis is the study of GPCR by means of this technique, with the ultimate goal of developing a methodology that can be generalized to the study of most 7-TM as well as other membrane proteins. Since the bovine rhodopsin was the only protein of the GPCR family with a known threedimensional structure at an atomic level until very recently, most of the effort is centered in the study of this receptor as a model of GPCR.<br/>The scope of this thesis is twofold. On the one hand it addresses the study of the simulation conditions, including the procedure as well as the sampling box to get optimal results, and on the other, the biological implications of the structural and dynamical behavior observed in the simulations. Specifically, regarding the methodological aspects of the work, the bovine rhodopsin has been studied using different treatments of long-range electrostatic interactions and sampling conditions, as well as the effect of sampling the protein embedded in different one-component lipid bilayers. The binding of ions to lipid bilayers in the absence of the protein has also been investigated. <br/>Regarding the biological consequences of the analysis of the MD trajectories, it has been carefully addressed the binding site of retinal and its implications in the process of isomerization after photon uptake, the alteration a group of residues constituting the so-called electrostatic lock between helices TM3 and TM6 in rhodopsin putatively used as common activation mechanism of GPCR, and the structural effects caused by the dimerization based on a recent semi-empirical model. Finally, the specific binding of ions to bacteriorhodopsin has also been studied. <br/>The main conclusion of this thesis is provide support to molecular dynamics as technique capable to provide structural and dynamical informational about membranes and membrane proteins, not currently accessible from experimental methods). Moreover, the use of an explicit lipidic environment is crucial for the study the membrane protein dynamics as well as for the protein-protein and lipidprotein interactions.

Massey, Geraldine. "Seven conceptions of CD-ROM information resources." Thesis, Queensland University of Technology, 1995. https://eprints.qut.edu.au/36510/1/36510_Massey_1995.pdf.

Full text
Abstract:
At present and in the future, vast amounts of information are being presented and will continue to be presented in a variety of formats that are technologically dependent. In a society where information is a key commodity, students need to develop skills which will help them deal with the information, as well as the format in which it is presented. Currently, one way used to present information is in the format of CD-ROM information resources. Students' experiences of CD-ROM information resources to gain access to information they require in their daily lives, either in the context of their school work or their personal information needs, may influence the development of crucial information skills. Previous research into CD-ROM information resources and their use by students has adopted a first-order perspective. That is, it has looked at technical aspects of the design of CD-ROM information resources; the effectiveness of CD-ROM information resources; and the observed use of CD-ROM information resources. This study adopts a second-order perspective to investigate students' experiences of CD-ROM information resources from the students' point of view. Such a perspective emphasizes the non-dualistic nature of the relationship that exists between students and CD-ROM information resources. Fifty-six male secondary students from two independent schools in Brisbane took part in ten synergetic focus group discussions and forty-nine of those students completed written responses to provide data for this study. The data were then analysed phenomenographically to discover the qualitatively different ways in which CD-ROM information resources were experienced by those students Seven conceptions of CD-ROM information resources were discovered. Participants saw CD-ROM information resources as Emerging Technological Resources, as Terra lncognita, as the Future of Information, as Tools, as Information Silos, as Learning Media and as Limited Information Resources. The structural relationship that exists between the conceptions was found to be dependent on the degree to which CD-ROM information resources were seen either to facilitate or not to facilitate physical or intellectual access to information. A comparison of the participants' conceptions with the "authorized" conceptions revealed that six of the seven conceptions were held by both the participants and the experts in the field. This comparative rate helps to validate this study. The reliability of the findings was confirmed by the use of a co-judge who scrutinized a sample of the data to allocate selected quotations to the categories chosen to describe the conceptions. A high interjudge reliability rate was achieved. The study shows how teachers and teacher-librarians can use a knowledge of the conceptions discovered to introduce students to different ways of experiencing CD-ROM information resources. These different experiences may help to promote the development by students of the information skills so necessary for students to participate actively in the information age, now and in the future.

Kolotylo, Rebecca Ann. "Flight speeds and energetics of seven bird species." Thesis, University of British Columbia, 1989. http://hdl.handle.net/2429/27499.

Full text
Abstract:
Flight speeds of seven bird species, the Tree Swallow (Tachycineta bicolor), Mountain Bluebird (Sialia currucoides), White-throated Swift (Aeronautes saxatalis), European Starling (Siurnis vulgaris), Black Tern (Chlidonias nigra), Pigeon Guillemot (Ceppkus columba), and Red-necked Grebe (Podiceps grisegna), were recorded using a Doppler radar handgun. Velocities were measured of adult birds flying to and from foraging areas while rearing young, and totalled 1178 records. Morphological measurements were also made on some of the species and were used, along with literature values, to construct curves of estimated total power required for flight versus flight velocity for each species. The mean observed flight speed, V[sub obs], for each species was then compared to the minimum power speed, V[sub mp], and the maximum range speed, V[sub mr], on the power curve. For five of the seven study species, the V0be was significantly greater than V[sub mr], and thus appeared to be independent of morphology, foraging methods and habitats. The V0bs of the other two species was found to be between V[sub mp] and V[sub mr]for the Pigeon Guillemot and less than V[sub mp] for the Red-necked Grebe. In a more detailed study of the Tree Swallow and the Mountain Bluebird, V[sub obs] was determined to be fairly constant over the recording period. Individual power curves were constructed for five female Mountain Bluebirds and three female Tree Swallows, since both morphological measurements and flight speeds were recorded for these individuals. In each case, V[sub obs]was significantly greater than V[sub mr]. For the bluebird, it was also found that the number of visits to the nest per hour per nestling did not appear to increase with the age of the nestling. The rate of feedings, however, was quite variable for both the Tree Swallow and Mountain Bluebird. By setting the observed flight speed, V0be, equal to. a predicted optimal speed, V[sub obt], the net rate of energy gain during foraging by the parents could be determined. Comparing this energy gain with estimates of nestling energy requirements for both species resulted in the conclusion that the observed speed could not be the same as the optimal speed, and that in order to meet nestling requirements, the parents may increase their feeding rate during other parts of the day not under observation.<br>Science, Faculty of<br>Zoology, Department of<br>Graduate

Abstract:
Context: Software Process Improvement uses lean principles for eliminating wastes in the software development process. Waste is defined as anything that does not add value to the customer and product. The seven traditional wastes in software engineering are partially done work, extra process, extra features, waiting, motion, task switching and defects. Using the lean principles and practices, the wastes can be reduced or eliminated. It is important to know the lean practices that are widely used in software development and to know the practices, which captures the seven wastes. From the literature, the ability of waste reduction is theoretically discussed [2], but practically only little empirical evidence is available on ‘which practice is best capable in reducing specific kinds of waste.’ Objectives: Many software development organizations have adopted lean practices and agile practices for eliminating wastes of different kinds. Therefore, this study focuses on evaluating the effectiveness of lean practices in their ability to reduce the seven types of wastes associated with Lean Software Engineering. Methodology: The methodology that is used in this study is systematic literature review and industrial survey. In order to achieve the objective on evaluating the lean practices and agile practices in their ability to reduce the seven types of wastes that have more attention in research, a systematic literature review is conducted. Thereafter, to capture the effectiveness of lean practices in waste removal, a survey is designed to capture the perception of practitioners. Results: The systematic literature review has identified 53 relevant studies to the research topic. From these primary studies, the lean practices/principles, hybrid agile and lean practices, and the efficiency of agile practices in eliminating the seven wastes were identified. In addition to that, wastes that are captured by using lean practices; hybrid lean and agile practices were also identified. The reason for considering agile practices is that, agile and lean have similarities in eliminating the wastes and creating value to the customer [2][3]. Through the systematic literature review, it can be observed that researchers have not investigated all the seven wastes captured by lean practices. Thereafter, survey is the main contribution to this research where, the responses of 55 respondents from different countries were recorded. Most of the respondents are from India with 42% of the responses. We have asked the role of every respondent in their companies, and 19 respondents are Team leaders, 16 respondents are project managers and remaining people perform various other roles in software development. 38 respondents are from large-scale industry, which constitutes the majority part of the survey. The main contribution of the survey is identifying the ability of lean practices in eliminating different wastes. The respondents were asked to provide their level of agreement related to the effectiveness of each lean practices and agile practice in waste removal. A comparison between the results of SLR and survey reveals that there is a lot of variance in the perception of researchers and practitioners regarding the lean practices in eliminating wastes. Survey captures more wastes than SLR. From the results of survey, it was also identified that using the lean practices i.e. Kanban and VSM can eliminate most of the wastes. Kanban (41) and VSM (33) are mostly used and more efficient in industries. Conclusions: To conclude, the obtained results from this study will be quite useful for the real-time execution of lean practices. Team leaders, project managers, and organizations can adopt lean by choosing lean practices in accordance to the wastes that have to be eliminated from their software development process. This study has also identified the benefits and limitations of lean practices implemented in industry. This study helps researchers in providing necessary information that is very useful for further research in lean practices. The combinations of lean practices were also presented, which in terms one lean practice can compensate another in capturing all the seven wastes. In the survey, the additional wastes were identified when compared to SLR and this complements the literature. There is a considerable reach gap between the state of art and state of practice. It has been identified that VSM and Kanban practices have much attention in the literature. The remaining practices like Kotter and Kaizen are less concentrated in most of the research literature. From the literature, it is evident that none of the practices is capable of eliminating all the seven wastes in software development. VSM is capable of capturing wastes like waiting, extra process and motion. In addition, Kanban captures and eliminates wastes like partially done work, defects, task switching and extra features. With respect to the survey, Kanban and VSM practices are efficient in eliminating wastes. When the practitioners consider hybrid lean and agile practices, the combination of Kanban and Scrum, Scrum and VSM are efficient in eliminating wastes. The practitioners can consider the benefits of lean practices that are identified in this research.<br>V S S N R Ram Nanduri vssnrram@gmail.com

Abstract:
Determining the social cost of carbon emissions (SCC) is a crucial step in the economic analysis of climate change policy as the US government's recent decision to use a range of estimates of the SCC centered at $77/tC (or, equivalently, $21/tCO2) in cost-benefit analyses of proposed emission-control legislation underlines. This note reviews the welfare economics theory fundamental to the estimation of the SCC in both static and intertemporal contexts, examining the effects of assumptions about the typical agent's pure rate of time preference and elasticity of marginal felicity of consumption, production and mitigation technology, and the magnitude of climate-change damage on estimates of the SCC. We high-light three key conclusions: (i) an estimate of the SCC is conditional on a specific policy scenario, the details of which must be made explicit for the estimate to be meaningful; (ii) the social discount rate relevant to intertemporal allocation decisions also depends on the policy scenario; and (iii) the SCC is uniquely defined only for policy scenarios that lead to an efficient growth path because marginal costs and benefits of emission mitigation diverge on inefficient growth paths. We illustrate these analytical conclusions with simulations of a growth model calibrated to the world economy. (authors' abstract)

Abstract:
Flash vacuum pyrolysis (FVP) reactions of <i>N</i>-(4-chlorophenoxymethyl)pyridinone systems and their benzo-fused analogues were found to follow one of two pathways. The first pathway was followed by the pyridin-4-one, phenanthridinone, quinolin-2-one and quinolin-4-one systems which all gave the parent heterocycle (<i>i.e.</i> pyridine, phenanthridine or quinoline respectively). Ring-expanded azepinones were shown to be intermediates in such reactions by 13C labelling experiments. The second pathway was followed by the pyridin-2-one and isocarbostyril systems where <i>p</i>-chlorophenol and the initial heterocycle (<i>i.e.</i> pyridin-2-one or isocarbostyril respectively) were obtained. The 'missing' CH2 group was detected as ethylene by bromine trapping experiments, which suggests that these compounds act as carbene generators under pyrolytic conditions. 5-[3-(Substitutedthio)propylidene]-2,2-dimethyl-1,3-dioxan-4,6-dione derivatives were synthesised for the first time and their structures were fully analysed. When pyrolysed, these compounds did not give the expected thiepinone systems and only fragmented products were isolated. The related 2-(alkylthio)arylmethylene precursors were also successfully synthesised but again no cyclisation products were obtained on pyrolysis. Reaction of Meldrum's acid with 2-(dialkylamino)benzaldehydes did not give the expected condensation product but instead novel 1,2,3,4-tetrahydroquinoline derivatives were obtained <i>via</i> a facile low-temperature <i>"tert-</i>amino effect". FVP of 5<i>H</i>-dibenzo[<i>b.f</i>]azepine at 950°C gives 9-methylacridine. However, the corresponding <i>N</i>-allylated derivative undergoes an unusual radical ring-contraction reaction to give pyrrolo[3,2,1-<i>jk</i>]carbazole; the optimum yield (63%) was obtained at 950°C. Reactions of this pyrrolocarbazole with electrophiles (<i>e.g.</i> Vilsmeier formylation, halogenation, reaction with oxalyl chloride) gave 2-substitution products in each case. Pyrrolo[3,2,1-<i>jk</i>]carbazole was also formed by the cyclisation of 2-(indol-l-yl)phenyl radicals generated by FVP of allyl 2-indol-I-ylbenzoates or I-(2-nitrophenyl)indoles. This route was found to be synthetically versatile and in optimum cases provided two-step access to substituted pyrrolo[3,2,1-<i>jk</i>]carbazoles and indolo[3,3,1-<i>jk</i>]carbazole. In some cases the reaction path was diverted to other products. Thus, when the corresponding benzimidazole and indazole systems were pyrolysed, the expected tetracycle rearranged under the reaction conditions to give 1-cyanocarbazole as the only product. FVP of the corresponding 2-methylbenzimidazole and indole systems gave 10<i>H</i>-4b,9-diazaindeno[1,2-a]indene and 10<i>H</i>-indolo[1,2-a]indole respectively; preliminary deuterium labelling experiments suggest that a hydrogen-transfer mechanism is involved. Cyclisation of the 2-(2-phenylbenzimidazol-1-yl)phenyl radical took place on the 2-phenyl substituent to give benzo[4,5]imidazo[1,2-<i>f</i>]phenanthridine rather than I-phenyl-2,9b-diazacyclopenta[<i>jk</i>]fluorene.

Abstract:
This work aimed at studying biophysical properties of two membrane proteins, one of potential nanotechnological use, bacteriorhodopsin, and one potential drug target, the NTS1 neurotensin receptor, at the single molecule scale. Bacteriorhodopsin (BR) is the only protein in the purple membrane (PM) of the halophilic organism Halobacterium salinarium. It is a light-driven proton pump converting light into a transmembrane proton gradient through isomerization of its retinal chromophore. Its stability, as well as its photoactivity remaining in dry protein layers, has made BR an attractive material for biomolecular devices. Numerous studies have been published on this topic; however, they have all used BR within the PM, on relatively large (µm-wide) surfaces. Here, conducting-probe atomic force microscopy (C-AFM) analysis was performed after removing most of the membrane lipids. For the first time, it was shown that the molecular conductance of BR can be reversibly photoswitched with predictable wavelength sensitivity. Intimate and robust coupling to gold electrodes was achieved by using a strategically engineered cysteine which, combined with partial delipidation, generated protein trimers homogenously orientated on the surface. Numerous controls using biophysical (SPR, ellipsometry, Kelvin-probe AFM) and chemical (photocurrent, cyclic voltammetry) techniques confirmed the wavelength specificity of the photoswitch, the anchoring role of the mutation and the homogenous orientation of the protein on the gold surface. Neurotensin is a brain and gastrointestinal 13 amino acid peptide acting as a neuromodulator in the central nervous system and as a hormone in the periphery. Its wide range of biological activities is primarily mediated through its binding to the neurotensin type 1 receptor (NTS1). NTS1 expressed in E.coli was purified and inserted into 100 nm brain polar lipid liposomes in a conformation which retained its ligand-binding capabilities. Initial AFM characterisation was performed as a prelude for ligand-receptor interaction studies, including high resolution imaging, force spectroscopy and solid state NMR approaches.
