Design, age, material and operation differences among cracked vessels complicate generalizations concerning failure modes. Nevertheless, considerable microstructural evidence suggests corrosion fatigue is the cause of most deaerator cracking. The corrosion fatigue process is discussed with regard to mechanisms, accelerating factors and crack morphologies.
