This article discusses the sexual script of Israeli sex industry consumers who self-identify as addicts. It argues that the ‘addict sexual script’ provides both an explanation for out of control sexual behaviour and a channel for expressing the individual client’s ‘right’ to be acknowledged for their suffering in the process of buying sex. Thus, the addict sexual script becomes a coping strategy that, while internalising sex consumption as socially deviant behaviour, also serves as a strategic practice for negotiating and challenging masculine hegemonic ideals. It concludes that the willingnes

The processes that are involved in sexual addiction and recovery were explored in this research. A phenomenological-hermeneutic method was employed in interviewing five male recovering sexual addicts. Themes of sexual addiction and recovery were then extrapolated from the words the participants used to express their life experience. Eleven themes characterizing the addiction process emerged from the transcriptions of the participant's in-depth interviews, as well as six themes relating to recovery. Abstract:
Introduction: ‘Sex addiction’ appears to have been largely accepted within clinical fields and popular culture. However, despite its 30 year history, the concept remains ill-defined and lacking in empirical data. Indeed, proponents of sex addiction continue to debate its terminology, definition, nosology, and aetiology, with a coherent model of the ‘disorder’ yet to be offered. An alternative account presented by the social constructionist model argues that the reason for this contention is because, rather than a pathological disorder, sex addiction represents a social construction.
