In males there are two terminal chiasma peaks in chromosome 1 and one subtelomeric peak of chiasmata in chromosome 14. In females chiasma distributions are more even. ABSTRACTIt is customary to assume that income is redistributed between the sexes within the family. This article investigates alternative assumptions about sharing within the family and their effects on the distribution of income. Using data from the UK Family Expenditure Survey for 1968 and 1986, we contrast two assumptions about sharing within the family; the conventional assumption of equal sharing or ‘pooling’, and an alternative of ‘minimum sharing’. Under each assumption, we examine the composition of extreme quintiles of the income distribution, and compute the numbers of men and women

The ratio was compared with multiple environmental and reproductive traits to determine their potential influence on sex determination and/or distribution of male and female plants. This thesis provides an intra-household analysis on the distribution of wellbeing to better understand the experiences of both men and women – ensuring that economic analysis and policy better represents their interests. Detailed examinations are undertaken to identify how men’s and women’s subjective wellbeing is affected by changes in their work roles, by parenthood, and by retirement. The findings demonstrate gendered inequalities in wellbeing – thereby identifying the continued influence of gender norms within Australian households, often to the detriment of women’s wellbeing.

AbstractIt is vital to examine the population composition, i.e. how the population being studied is structured. In demography, to understand the phenomena studied (firstly, births and deaths), it is common practice to examine the number of women in relation to the number of men and to distinguish the distribution of individuals by age. The most common representation of this gender and age composition is the “age pyramid”. It is important to know the age and gender composition, as this largely determines a population's demographic dynamics. Elements relating to gender and age composition will e

This study examines the gendered effects of early and sustained exposure to high-performing peers on female educational trajectories. Exploiting random allocation to classrooms within middle schools, we measure the effect of male and female high performers on girls' high school placement outcomes. We disentangle two channels through which peers of either sex can play a role: academic performance and school preferences. We also focus on the effects of peers along the distribution of baseline academic performance. Exposure to good peers of either sex reduces the degree to which high-achieving gi

Drawing on 2023 1-year estimates from the American Community Survey (ACS), an estimated 1.3 million U.S. households were headed by same-sex couples, including 774,000 married and 530,000 cohabiting couples (authors’ calculations). In contrast, approximately 69 million households were headed by different-sex couples, comprising 60 million married and 9 million cohabiting couples. Prior research using the U.S. Decennial Census has shown that same-sex couples tend to have larger age gaps between partners than their different-sex counterparts (Schwartz & Graf, 2009). [Extract from Foreword] This ‘cruise report’ is the first of a short series, reflecting the aspiration of the Clyde Fishermen’s Association to establish a rigorous sampling scheme to monitor changes in the abundance and distribution of cod (and later other gadoid species) within the Clyde area. The Scottish Oceans Institute was approached to provide independent scientific support in early 2016. A series of surveys was then conducted in 2016, 2017 and 2018. In each survey the SOI provided observers, collected data and wrote up a cruise report detailing the methods used and the location, numbers

The role of large subsurface landforms produced during glaciations of the Pleistocene is still poorly understood with respect to groundwater flow. In particular, so-called tunnel valleys (TVs) formed beneath ice sheets acted as drainage systems of glacial meltwater. Due to their mechanism of formation, the fill of buried TVs often consists of highly permeable sands and gravels in their lower part and fine-grained deposits at their top. Such a configuration promotes their role as preferential flow pathways for groundwater sealed from the saltwater above. To understand the role of TVs for offsho
