The European red click beetle, Elater ferrugineus L., is associated with wood mould in old hollow deciduous tree. As a result of severe habitat fragmentation caused by human disturbance, it is threatened throughout its distribution range. A survey of a natural population of Aquarius remigis, a stream dwelling water strider, living in East Turkey Creek, Arizona, USA, revealed that they were mostly found in either pairs consisting of one male and one female, or in small female biased groups. Chi-squared analysis confirmed that this finding was not due to random chance. This thesis provides an intra-household analysis on the distribution of wellbeing to better understand the experiences of both men and women – ensuring that economic analysis and policy better represents their interests. Detailed examinations are undertaken to identify how men’s and women’s subjective wellbeing is affected by changes in their work roles, by parenthood, and by retirement. The findings demonstrate gendered inequalities in wellbeing – thereby identifying the continued influence of gender norms within Australian households, often to the detriment of women’s wellbeing.

The protective effect of female sex in renal ageing and cardiovascular function is widely accepted, but poorly understood. Previous evidence has suggested a role for the nitric oxide and renin-angiotensin systems, though the precise mechanisms by which they elicit these effects remain elusive. Following a detailed review of the history and theory of sea ice modelling in the Arctic, a further review is made of previous analysis of the ice thickness distribution. In addition to this, ten new or partially cited upward looking sonar ice draft datasets derived from moored buoys and submarine profiles have been used to provide a detailed set of statistics for comparison with modelled ice thickness distribution functions in the Greenland Sea.
